Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars I have to write this review...........2006-01-01

A few years ago I got bored with heavy metal having listening to it for 10 years now. I keep following the most popular bands which if you exclude Nightwish and 69 eyes which came a little late in my life and thrilled me I saw no other thrills...

The latest album of Iced Earth at best mediocre, the new Demons & Wizards can't even listen to it, the latest of Blind Guardian very difficult to listen to. Moreover, the latest album of Nightwish I believe is the weakest of all, contrary to whatever everybody says. Shadow Gallery cannot create another "carved in stone" or "tyrrany" and in general I haven't listened to one good album from my favorite bands. Only the same again and again...Kamelot is the exception, you cannot catch these guys, they are filled with talent and abilities.

So we come to Lost Horizon which I listened to by accident.

The singer is a damn poser, megalomaniac, selfish b#@$@# who wants to be in front and take all the credit. First time I listen to a few songs and this singer is everywhere. Everywhere...who does he think he is?? Why is he in this band??
Maybe because he is not just a singer but THE singer? Maybe because he knows he is fantastic with a damn good VOICE? Maybe because he knows he can do whatever he wants with his voice? Last time I listened to a voice that sometimes gave me the chill, and others made me wanna "kill" was that of Eric Adams. Last time I said wow was when I listened to Midnight. Last time I bowed my self to thy magnificence was when I listened to Khan. (all clasic voices excluded) This time to my ears this guy has the ultimate power metal voice.
He has elements of the guy who sings in Rhapsody, with great depth and fantastic ups and lows, with the voice "trembling". Yet, add to that something of Piet Sielk in heaviness...What can I say...Whenever he screams and he does it alot I just can't be bored with it!! I love it.
So there is no reason to say more about this band. It doesn't matter if you like the songs or not just get it to listen to this guy...
Ok, the rest of the band deserves credits too. These two albums sounded fantastic in my ears and it is to my surpise that I bought a metal magazine which never gave this band the rating that it deserved. How can you trust these guys when they give ratings when maybe they get paid....I found this band by accident again!!

If you like power metal ala Sonata arctica, with enough progressive spins as the 6 songs are quite long, keybords that add mostly in atmosphere and secondly adding some tunes, and a singer with an epic voice who screams into your heart give it a try. To me they sounded like I just found metal again being 16 years old!!! In relation to the rest power metal bands they seem to have a certain personallity of their own

Ratings

1. Always skip, not the best intro, only keabords --2
2. Just --10
3. More than 8 minutes and not a single time you will be bored. When was the last time you heard over and over again songs that long without getting bored? --10
4. Another --10
5. Skip again -they could put an intstrumental maybe...--2
6. More than 8 mins long again and it seems like 3 minutes long....Plain --10
7. Easily without thinking --10
8. More than 10 mins long but to me its the weakest song of the album. Not bad though --7
9. Damn intros and outros --1

I have listened to this album many many times and my only wish is to have seen this guys live. Too bad the singer left the band...He is half the money. The other half is the guitarist who writes the songs.

Negatives-
The only negative remark I can find are the three instrumentals which are nothing significant. Even if they weren't whole songs if they where better (with not mere keybords making sounds without a good melody) they could make the album more than perfect.

ps. It is also strange to see the difference in grading the songs from my point of view to that of the guy bellow. He considers the Highlander song 9,5 while to me it is the weakest of the album, without being bad in general! Of course tastes can differ but the tens I give, I give them without hard thinking. No person who respects himself and metal in whole could rate this album les than 4 stars. Just pay attention to it and listen it for a few times. It is obvious that the guys who made this music did because they believed in it. Not for money or to become famous or anythin ( they follow the Manowar kind of style (they skip the chains though) which sounded a bit silly to me at first and certainly outdated. Yet they proved to be very serious about themselves....

5 out of 5 stars Most significative band after Sonata Arctica or Dream Theater.......2005-11-03

let's say that I love Sonata Arctica and Dream Theater, and I was a long time Iron Maiden fan. Tired of listening the same bands over and over again, I searched in each and every corner a new band. It took quite long, I listened more than 100 CDs hoping to find that band that could satisfy my musical apetite...

Hopefully, during the search I haven't ignored this one, despite the CD cover which is well designed but reminds me more a manowar album and I was trying to avoid that... anyway, after listening to the music, CD cover could have been a little bit more epical like latest sonata arctica albums covers. So don't get fooled by it.

From the 100 CDs I listened to, It was very easy to take this one into consideration: I listened to "Pure" and instantly realized that it is one of the best metal tracks ever, and told me enough at the moment. This band is like the other reviwer said, a kind of Manowar mixed with Dream Theater progression, and I would add that it has a little of Sonata Arctica spice too. Not to mention that despite the sound style being old fashioned, the melody compositions are quite modern, lets say, the step beyond that other metal bands failed to make. Sound quality of the recording is very good.

About the rest of the CD, there's no song that would make you jump to the next one. All is listenable, maybe the outro and intro are just to make the album a little bit more artistically so the listener doesn't take it as a simple and direct metal band. So I think its good to have intro/outro there.

5 out of 5 stars Great stuff.......2005-05-02

This is one great CD. The band really knows how to play their instruments, and the vocalist kicks ass. While the songs are a little long for my taste, they're extremely good so they don't lose much for being so long. If you like Power Metal, get this. It's more of a Power/Prog blend than it is either one..kinda like Pagans Mind..they kick ass too :)

5 out of 5 stars European heavy metal at its best.......2004-10-23

I didn't know what to expect when I decided to buy Lost Horizon's new CD. I never heard of this band until recently. The reviews helped me make my decision to bite the bullet and buy it. I'm a Dream Theater, Bruce Dickinson, Iron Maiden, early Paradise Lost, early Metallica, basically all-around heavy metal fan. I'm willing to give a listen to any band that is heavy. I just got this CD and have been listening to it in constant rotation. I'm pleasantly surprised by what I hear. It sounds like a cross between Dream Theater and Manowar, even vocally speaking. The first tune "Transcendental Revelation" is trippy, to say the least. It's a futuristic-sound-effects-prologue-intro track. Track two rocks, man. "Pure" is pure heavy metal--fast, uplifting, crunching metal. This is how Dream Theater should have evolved, instead of the half-ballad, lyrically depressing albums they do now. Track three, "Lost in the Depths of Me," is my favorite track. Contemporary heavy metal doesn't get much better than this. This track is complexly layered like Dream Theater, and the jamming Manowar sound jumps out here. Killer track! Track four, "Again Will the fire Burn," is another Manowar sounding tune--but much better than Manowar. Manowar only wishes it could cut a quality track like this one. Synthesizers are a great addition. Track five, "The Song of Earth," is a short mystical track with synthesizers. Track six, "Cry of a Restless Soul," is Yngwie Malmsteen on acid. I sware to God, this track is that fast in spots. Lost Horizon pulls off this unique sound throughout. Track seven, "Think not Forever," is a mixture of crunching metal, synthesizers, and well-structured vocals and chorus. Track eight, "Highlander (The One)," is a great story, with great musicianship. Starts slow, then gets heavy, and sinks back into slowness, but the vocals and story carries it along through the heavy parts. The last track, track nine, "Deliverance," ends the way the CD began, a trippy-sounding futuristic epologue. I haven't heard a heavy metal CD this good in a long time, perhaps since I bought Bruce Dickinson's "The Chemical Wedding."

5 out of 5 stars a message from the gods to an undeserving humanity.......2004-09-08

Lost Horizon, I don't deserve you.

I confess that at first I "let loser side take command". I didn't like this album much because it isn't as accessible as the first one. I was too lazy to read the lyric book, too lazy to pay attention. Too lazy. Too small. Too weak. And so your greatness remained beyond my understanding. At first.

Such is the law: you get what you deserve. Lost Horizon gives their wisdom freely, but only those who are willing to climb this stairway of flame all the way to the sky can take this gift.

And one day, I found the spirit and made the effort. And Lost Horizon lifted me to the heights.

I take solace in knowing that, while it is true that I do not deserve this, neither does anyone else. We all fall short of the glory of Lost Horizon, the equal of any metal band anywhere and ever. Flame is even better than the debut. Indeed, this is as good as any heavy metal album ever recorded. No, scratch that, to say that is to damn it with faint praise. This is as good as any album ever recorded.

Uh, yeah, I'd give it five stars. Or five galaxies, if you like.

5 out of 5 stars I see Flames below, above, and all around me.......2003-05-31

I have there first cd, didn't think music could get much better then "Awakening the World", I was taught patience is a virture, roughly 2 years later we have Lost Horizon and there 2nd release "Flame to the ground beneath". In one word this cd is EPIC, ok two words, BREATHLESS, Every song although there are only 6 true songs they are a masterpiece is there own right but "Highlander" stuck with me the most. The music is heavy, mellow, moving, his high pitch screams almost require plugs they are that high. I could rant an rave for hours on these guys but i won't, these guys are going to have a long future, if it takes 2 more years for there next cd i'll be here waiting for it and so should you. Go out buy this cd right now and while your at it if you havn't already u have to buy "Awakening the world" too, go out buy them both tell your friends, have them buy them too, spread the word music this great deserves to be spread and heard.

5 out of 5 stars Easily the best Power Metal to come out in years........2003-05-27

I first heard of Lost Horizon via a friend on IRC and I was simply blown away, they have such power and soaring majestic songs. Both of their albums are fantastic and I would easily recommend them to anyone remotely interested in power metal.

If you want an idea of their sound, I'd say their vocalist sounds roughly like a combination of Bruce Dickinson (Iron Maiden) and the lead singer for Freedom Call (but he is better than either one, and I say that despite being a HUGE Bruce Dickinson fan), and the rest of the band is power metal at its finest, very technically proficient drummer and bassist, and the guitarists are equally if not more talented. They have a rich, full featured sound that simply will blow your mind. AWESOME band I eagerly await more albums or a US tour. (I'm dreaming, but hey I'd love to see them in concert)

5 out of 5 stars The Bringer of Metal Salvation.......2003-04-04

After hearing Lost Horizon's debut, I didn't think they would be able to come up with something on par with "Awakening the World". I stand corrected. This time around we see the addition of two new members, Fredrik Olsson (Equilibrian Epicurius) on guitars and Atilla Publik (Perspicacious Protector) on keys. They both contribute to a more full and mature sound. The twin guitars give both axemen more freedom to show their talent and as usual the man on the mic (Daniel Heiman) is otherworldly! Highlights include: "Pure" (excellent opening track with mesmerizing vocals), "Lost in the Depths of Me" (a complex journey into "the message"), "Cry of a Restless Soul", "Think Not Forever" and the epic "Highlander (The One)". There are simply not words to describe the majesty and excellence of this band that came virtually out of nowhere. These guys are the next superstars of Europe. Any fan of true/power metal should run out and get both their albums! You have to hear this band to see what the buzz is about... once you do you'll be hooked, at least I was. Their music has as much emotion as it does talent and by all the gods... it freakin' rocks!

    5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT.......2003-03-05

If you want to hear true/power-metal with originality and genuine talent, then I can't think of too many other bands in the European melodic-metal scene worth checking out then these guys! Lost Horizon hail from Sweden, and although some cliches of the genre apply, they have enough nostalgic 80'S Metal appeal to attract fans of bands such as Iron Maiden or Judas Priest, as well as an element of freshness and aggression simply missing in the genre today. This is their second album and although not as classic as their first, it's a great follow-up. Kinda like Led Zepplin II, or Van Halen II, great follow-ups to the debuts even if not as good!!! Vocalist Daniel Heiman has a great voice with an awesome range and good control, the guitar playing and drum-work is also excellent and should appeal to most prog/power metalists!! Production is killer too, in other words GET THIS ALBUM!!!!!!
