5 out of 5 stars Global warming can wait... this album ROCKS!!!.......2007-08-02

I was in college at UT-Austin when this album came out in the mid-80s and even back then, amidst all of the creativity of the punk and new wave movements and the great local music scene in Austin, this "Mood Swing" album stood out for me. The "88 Lines About 44 Women" was a perfect match for the great new wave songs of the time, their version of "Let It All Hang Out" will forever be the best version of it ever made, and all of the other songs on the album are just really good rock-n-roll. Over time, I slowly converted my 1500+ overplayed vinyl albums into CD purchases, and this album was one of the few holdouts to the point where I had given up on the thought that it would ever come out on CD after all these years. So hallelujah, this CD **finally** is out, and, even better, includes the two great remixes. Unfortunately, this album also probably gets missed in the constantly changing history of music, and some people might even think of it as a one-hit wonder for the "88 Lines" song. But hopefully far more people can now appreciate the well-crafted set of songs that are on this CD. I have over 1500 CDs now, and this one ranks in, ohhh, my top 50 most-played CDs just in the 5 weeks that I have had it. Play it at a party, play it when you are stuck in a rush-hour traffic jam, but, most importantly, play it LOUD!

5 out of 5 stars MARC CAMPBELL OF THE NAILS SAYS THANK YOU.......2007-06-08

Finally, MOOD SWING gets released on cd. Better late than never. I'm delighted and surprised that MOOD SWING has connected with so many people.
And I'm really pleased that THE NAILS may be recognized as more than just the band that wrote and recorded 88 LINES ABOUT 44 WOMEN. My hope is that a new generation of listeners will discover MOOD SWING. Rock and roll is and will always be my religion and my passion. And at a time when rock has become more and more corporate and its message less and less provocative, I can say, absolutely, that I never got into rock and roll for money or fame. I got into it because I had no choice. When the spirits of rock and roll spoke, I listened and I made my move.

p.s. Andru, if you're ever in Taos, New Mexico, look me up. The drinks are on me.

Thanks, MARC CAMPBELL, THE NAILS.

5 out of 5 stars ONE OF THE GREATEST ALBUMS EVER RECORDED -- OBSCENELY IGNORED.......2007-05-23

I don't frequently engage in hyperbole, but this album has ALWAYS been in my Top Ten favorite records of all time. Really. "Pet Sounds" by the Beach Boys; "Something/Anything" by Todd Rundgren; "Help!" (the Brit version) by the Beatles; and then there's "Mood Swing" by the Nails. How this record and the singular vocal talents of Marc Campbell could be overlooked in 1984 when this album came out -- and how it could remain unissued on CD nearly 25 years -- is indeed one of the great mysteries of rock (next to the "Paul-Is-Dead" hoax; see my book Turn Me On, Dead Man for that story). Do yourself a favor -- even if you've only heard "88 Lines About 44 Women", you need to hear "Home Of The Brave", "White Wall", "Mood Swing" and a killer version of "Let It All Hang Out" whose arrangement was stolen wholesale by Huey Lewis and The News for their song "I Want A New Drug". Buy this now; you won't regret it.

5 out of 5 stars As good as the first!.......2007-07-15

In 1973 Lou Reed's Berlin messed up my mind permanently. The idea that rock and roll could convey darker and less wholesome imagery wasn't a new idea by any means. But Reed took it a step further and only now is the work truly appreciated. So when I first heard Mood Swing by the Nails I heard echoes of Reed's Berlin (and a hell of a lot more) in the music and lyrics. The band simply wiped the floor with anything happening at that time in the eighties (Madonna, Prince and Culture Club to name a few). Marc Campbell's vocals were reminiscent of so many great singers but entirely original and his sense of drama was at times comical and harsh. Dangerous Dreams was the follow-up and of course I was eager to see if this band would break under corporate pressure and change their sound. Not only didn't they change they just became even more remote and bleak in their compositions. The powerful bass just thumps along like a lead instrument and the band follows in a flurry of great guitar riffs, plaintive wails on sax and killer drumming. The keyboards, drifting in and out, re-enforce the concept of dreams and holds the whole thing together. Campbell's lyrics and delivery are ghost-like on this recording and just works perfectly. I could do a track-by-track analysis but you should just buy the disc and experience it yourself. You'll wonder what you were thinking about in the 80s to have missed this!

While it is impossible to really squeeze The Very Best of Janet Baker onto just two CDs, this two and a half hour anthology is a fine portrait of the British mezzo-soprano. Central to CD 1 is Elgar's Sea Pictures, a definitive account with the London Symphony Orchestra conducted by Sir John Barbirolli. While other British music is represented by Vaughan Williams's "Linden Lea," Britten's "Corpus Christie Carol," and Warlock's "Pretty Ring Time," CD 2 balances the program with 10 Schubert songs accompanied at the piano by either Gerald Moore or Geoffrey Parsons, which range from "Ave Maria" to Shakespeare. The set lends equal weight to orchestral and more intimate song, as well as to works in English--a very moving reading of Handel's "He was despised" from Messiah--and European landmarks, including Mendelssohn's On Wings of Song and Brahms's Alto Rhapsody, the latter with a superlative London Philharmonic Orchestra under Sir Adrian Boult. In an age of technically dazzling but sometimes bland singers, this release is a reminder of emotionally intense musicianship that retains vocal clarity and commitment to the composer's intentions over superstar ego. The word great is often used all too easily, but it could not be more appropriate for this outstanding collection of a great singer. --Gary S. Dalkin

This cd and this amazing musician are an absolute must have for any music lover or music snob alike! Her voice is amazing!

5 out of 5 stars Grace Incarnate.......2002-09-02

If there is one singer who has ever truly been able to master the singer's art of interpretation, this is her. She is a gift to music, I truly believe this. A few words, or glowing adjectives could not accurately describe the singing of a woman who epitomizes art. And music. Grace and beauty.
Each track on this cd is a perfect union of poetry, melody and technicality. Dame Janet Baker fully immerses herself into each piece, and delivers highly commited, intelligent & emotional performances.

5 out of 5 stars A Rare & Glorious Singer.......2002-06-10

This is a pretty good cross-section of Dame Janet's output from the prime of her career. There are few if any singers like her around today. There are many mezzos who can sing beautifully, with great articulation and finesse, but they lack the moral and musical integrity Dame Janet always brought to her singing. The voice is ardent, seeking, yearning, finding, exulting. Listen to the excerpt from "Dream of Gerontius" or the third of the "Sea Pictures" to see what I mean.
She does not sing to show off. She sings to enlighten, to illuminate, to reveal, to enter into. Her voice carries us off, near to Heaven.
Dame Janet has been neglected of late. This recording shows us why, in these perilous times, we need her more than ever.

Conductor Robert Shaw's death three months after this recording was made brought to an unexpected close a rare and distinguished career that always was dominated by Shaw's activities as a choral conductor. As with Leonard Bernstein's final recording--a live concert performance at Tanglewood--there is a sense of determination and drive and assuredness in this Dvorák performance that can come only from a lifetime of experience, of being involved, of being constantly in the midst of the action. Shaw's even-handed manner throughout--no extremes of tempo or dynamics, none of the quirky phrasing conductors sometimes exhibit late in their careers--owes much to the fact that he gave long consideration to this piece, and knew exactly what he wanted. Not surprisingly, Telarc's recording sets the balance in favor of the chorus, and Shaw has no problem letting the singers really sing out, especially in the frequent climaxes. Consonants tend toward the hard side, vowels are open: this is a true American chorus, the very concept of which Shaw spent a lifetime refining and nurturing. This Stabat Mater is a very big piece, and it can be quite unwieldy because nearly all of its 10 movements require different combinations of performing forces, from chorus alone to solo quartet to different soloists with chorus. Shaw makes sure that everything moves and flows, and the Telarc engineers capture every quiet ripple and surging crescendo. Sometimes the placement of soloists seems too close, and occasionally, Shaw's beat is just too deliberate for text and music--especially in the delicate opening movement choral passages. But together, these soloists are the best on disc, and Shaw's orchestra gives him everything a conductor could ask. All concerned have much to be proud of here--a first rate production about which Shaw must still be smiling. --David Vernier

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Personal Dvorak.......2005-11-30

The Stabat Mater is a Latin poem which takes place at the death of Jesus. But the subject is not about Jesus, instead, the focus is on Mary, the grieving mother. The poem opens viewing Mary from afar at the cross describing the moment and the scene. The poem moves to a more personal point of view, first expressing empathy, than a want to share the pain of the Virgin mother, moving through prayerfulness, supplication, and eventually acceptance. The end of the poem tells of the sacrifice of Jesus, of Mary, and the eventual resurrection of the soul.

The music is not typical Dvorak. We are familiar with his folk-based works, his symphonies and other settings, but rarely do we hear his orchestrated vocal music, the Stabat Mater is one of the most played choral works. The music is not necessarily rooted in the folk music of his homeland, but it seems the music, the vocal parts, are evocative of the Italian tradition. One wonders if Dvorak knew of the Verdi Requiem, because much of the vocal writing and some of the instrumental settings are reminiscent of Verdi. The Stabat Mater is divided into 10 movements, all are very personal, moving from grief and pain to hope and eventual realization. Dvorak's melodies are short and tuneful, and he uses them over and over, each depicting the text rather well. The soloists play against the chorus, sometimes echoing each other. The choral parts are not extremely difficult (except for the jubilant last movement), but this creates the intimate nature of the text. The music is interesting and is a monumental effort (well over an hour of music), perhaps not as well known as the Verdi or Pergolesi setting, but unique on its own.

Robert Shaw and the Atlanta Symphony provide a stalwart performance of a lesser-known work. The soloists are solid (if not too closely miked), and the chorus is in fine form (the final movement is a good showcase for the choir). Along with an interview with Robert Shaw this is a welcome CD. While the classic Kubelik, Sinopoli, and Macal are good, this CD is a consummate performance.

5 out of 5 stars A little-known classic.......2005-07-23

Although this is not one of the most popular of Dvorak's works, it is undoubtedly a little gem of classical music that deserves more recognition for its offerings.

5 out of 5 stars Sorely missed.......2004-10-15

Robert Shaw died four months before my chorus was scheduled to sing with him. For that concert, we changed the program to include one of the works he had programmed, but the second half was entirely Shaw/Parker arrangements of a cappella spirituals.

Hearing the wonderful interview on this recording brought back memories of the many times we did perform with him, times I cherish. I have "Shaw-isms" (pieces of great musical, choral, and philosophical wisdom) scribbled throughout many choral scores.

This recording is a superb example of Shaw's genius. While I often prefer other interpretations of many works on disc to Shaw's, in this case, his is IT. I can feel the counting out that his choruses were invariably required to do while learning a piece ("one and two and tee and four and..."), and I can hear the incredible attention to detail that he put into everything he conducted. "Take care of the details," he said, "and the rest is assured."

The soloists are terrific (Shaw knew them all and invariably had the best on his recordings).

If you're not familiar with this piece, listen. It's a piece for connoisseurs of choral music, and perhaps not as instantly accessible or awe-inspiring as, say, the Verdi or Berlioz Requiems, or perhaps Rossini's setting of the Stabat Mater, but it's worth getting to know. The subtleties are as wonderful as are the contrasts. Shaw more than does it justice.

I've sung it, and hope to sing it again someday.

5 out of 5 stars A Perfect 10 !!!.......2004-08-21

Robert Shaw delivers on his last recording before his untimely death. The recording flows smoothly from start to finish, and the choir follows Shaw's every move. Other recordings haven't delivered the inspired performance that this recording conveys. The NPR interview was also a nice touch as a lasting tribute.
THIS IS A MUST HAVE--RECOMMENDED!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars This piece and this recording should be much better known.......2002-07-16

I bought this disk because I had heard Stanford Olsen sing here in Ann Arbor. He has a wonderful voice - flexible, strong, and able to hit the high notes with a gorgeous tone quality from the bottom to the top. He does an especially nice job at finding the means of expression within the music, that is - he uses the music's own means of expression to bring us to the music rather than imposing an interpretation on it.

But I have to tell you, this recording is much much more than Stanford Olsen. He does a great job, but so do the other soloists, the chorus, and the orchestra - all lead by the great late and lamented Robert Shaw.

This music is very good and is sung most expressively. It is a long work (two disks), but never FEELS long. You feel involved and emotionally captured all the way through (unless you are disposed to dislike 19th century romantic music that wears its heart on its sleeve - no 20th century irony here).

I encourage you to get to know this piece and this is a very good recording of this great work.

5 out of 5 stars A must!.......2005-09-26

One of the most beautiful, well-made choral CDs to be released anywhere in recent memory. A must for any choral enthusiast. Wonderfully fresh, gorgeous, and challenging program. One or two of the tracks, such as Busto's Ave Maria and Part's Magnificat are slightly below the choir's standard of excellence, but it is easy to forgive considering the incredible performances on the rest of the CD. The Penderecki, Houkom, and Paulus in particular are absolutely ravishing; I truly don't think choral singing has ever gotten closer to perfection.

4 out of 5 stars dale warland singers.......2005-07-01

once again the dale warland singers have produced a recording of wonderful singing and terrific (while perhaps slightly obscure) repertoire. this eclectic recording of lesser-known choral works is truly worth purchasing. from the simplistic beauty of "little tree" to the fresh dissonances of "the rune of hospitality", this recording is a treasure. however, i would recommend it to those with an experience ear.

5 out of 5 stars Very fine collection - well sung.......2003-06-12

At times I have not been terribly impressed with albums like this from American choirs, but this one is very good indeed. It's certainly an eclectic collection, including music from around the world. The singing is almost always exceptional, with some outstanding interpretations of the lesser-known works. My favourites would have to be the two settings of 'Ave Maria' by Stravinsky and Javier Busto (a Basque composer, who has developed a wonderful choral-writing style). Also of note are Part's 'Magnificat' and Poulenc's 'Quem Vidistes Pastores'.

I highly recommend this recording - as other reviewers have said, it's worth playing all year round (in New Zealand, the stillness is in July anyway - not December!).

5 out of 5 stars One of the great choral recordings.......2002-04-20

Minneapolis-based conductor Dale Warland directs this superb chorus that specializes in 20th-century music. The collection here is an outstanding demonstration of the group's artistry, with some compositions by well-knowns such as Stravinsky and Arvo Prt, and others that are relatively unknown.

It's hard to choose favorites from such a line-up, but the vocal and artistic highlight for me is Penderecki's "Song of Cherubim" - an absolutely stunning piece sung with the precision that is one of the hallmarks of this group. Alf Houkom's "The Rune of Hospitality" has a gorgeous melody that resonated in my head for days afterward. I also like Trond Kverno's magnificent "Corpus Christi Carol," and Stephen Paulus' quietly moving "Evensong." But every single track is a gem, and throughout the program, this remarkable group demonstrates impeccable technique and ensemble unity.

American Choral Classics has done this project justice with sound of crystal clarity and presence. When coupled with such artistry, the result is one of the finest choral recordings I have ever heard.

Don't be deterred by the "holiday" nature of the collection. The music and the performances are of such a high caliber, you'll want to listen to it year-round.

5 out of 5 stars Well-compiled and sung lesser-known works for the holidays........1999-08-27

This is a very well-conceived collection of mostly lesser-known choral gems for the holidays, combined with a few more famous selections. For years, Warland has championed the cause of otherwise obscure choral works, as well as choral composers whose works deserve a broader audience. The benefit to these composers, their works, and the discerning listener, is the consummate professionalism, musicianship, artistry, and craftsmanship with which Dale Warland, his singers, and even the recording engineers and technicians lend to their album projects.

As a former student of Dr. Alf S. Houkom, composer of "The Rune of Hospitality" (found on this recording), and a choral conductor myself, I rejoiced in the knowledge that this work, and others like it, are finally getting the exposure, as well as the professional treatment, that they so richly deserve. Bravo, Mr. Warland, and thank you for the gift of this album. This is truly in the spirit of the season.

Mood Swing

THE NAIL'S MOOD SWING with the original RCA version of 88 LINES ABOUT 44 WOMEN is now available on cd. Forget about Corpus Christi. It is an unauthorized release and has been disavowed by THE NAILS. Buy MOOD SWING instead.

1 out of 5 stars The Nails - Corpus Christi.......2005-09-15

The 88 lines about 44 women is a cute, interesting song, and is why I bought the album. The rest of it is just aweful, though.

3 out of 5 stars an actual album review.......2004-01-08

Other reviews on this album so far are virtually worthless because they only address the one song "88 lines about 44 women". Of the three albums The Nails released this one is the least. Neither the lyrics nor the music itself is as good as their second album "Dangerous Dreams" released in 1986. "Dangerous Dreams" is the best of the three albums. Their first album is "Mood Swing" released in 1984 and contains the original version of "88 lines about 44 women". "Mood Swing" is a solid album that rocks from to start to finish. If either of these is ever released on CD, I highly recommend them.

However "Corpus Christi" is worth having for a few songs-- "Let's Commit A Sin", "The Flesh",and "Holy Sea". It is worth having merly to listen to Marc Campell's voice. His voice is very unique among singers. ( Ironic the one song that made The Nails famous is the one song that does not emphasis the uniqueness of Marc's voice ) Although the lyrics are constrained here by religious themes (the first two albums have very little religious overtone) they are still imaginative and far above ninety nine percent of alternative rock music today.

2 out of 5 stars East Coast Shmeast Coast.......2003-04-10

"Original" or not, the more popular version of "88 Lines" found on the Richard Blade comp. most definitely WAS played on KROQ back in '83 - '84. I was there too, son.

5 out of 5 stars The original KROQ version of 88 Lines!.......2002-03-12

A KROQ Fan's review is misleading. The version of "88 Lines.." he's recommending on Richard Blade's CD is NOT the ORIGINAL, and certainly not the version that was played on KROQ "back in the day."

"88 Lines..." was originally released in 1981 on an indie label (Jimboco/Citybeat). The indie version was played on the BBC in England, KROQ in LA, KITS in SF and other westcoast stations, and it's the version included on Corpus Christi.

The Richard Blade version is the later RCA re-recording that was played on most of the eastcoast radio stations in 1983 (like WBCN in Boston). (Incidentally, WLIR/WDRE in NY played both versions.) So, technically, CORPUS CHRISTI DOES CONTAIN THE ORIGINAL VERSION...and most definitely the KROQ version.

The rest of Corpus Christi sounds like the third Nails album it was intended to be. Dark, gothic... Not for everybody, but damn wicked.

Christmas albums by opera divas hardly make an exalted genre. Usually they involve overblown arrangements, hackneyed material, and singers sight-reading music they don't particularly like and making lame attempts at singing in English. With all her integrity, Anne Sofie von Otter would never do such a thing, and she hasn't here. This disc is a personal, eclectic mix, with the mezzo-soprano sounding sincere and approachable by sticking to the lower end of her range using small-ensemble arrangements you might hear in an evening sitting around the fire. In fact, rarely has Otter sung with such warmth as in Pereic Moraeus's "Koppangen," accompanied by accordion, guitar, violin, and mandolin. Not only is her English good but she seems to connect with the language emotionally. Amid the cozy, jazzy renditions of "The Christmas Song (Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire)" and "Silent Night," there are a few lapses into eccentricity, such as an atonal string ensemble arrangement of "White Christmas" that easily could've been done by Alban Berg, and some Nordic-language forays in which Otter seems to be getting in touch with her primitivistic Viking roots. With good taste displayed elsewhere, she's allowed. --David Patrick Stearns

5 out of 5 stars Musically interesting Christmas alternative.......2004-12-09

I've been in charge of holiday music for the extended family for the last decade or so, and I generally buy a half-dozen or so CDs every year from a wide range of genres. This is perhaps my favorite of them all. It manages the almost impossible feat of engaging an audiophile like me who's looking for something different while simultaneously enthralling more tradition-minded family members. The CD stands out in most of the critical areas in the holiday field. First, the selection of songs is brilliant--a few English-language standards with some foreign-language songs people may know (Il est ne, le divine enfant) and a handful of really engaging Swedish tunes. Second, the spare but warm instrumentation conveys the coziness van Otter is seeking. Last, and most important, van Otter's low mezzo is put to incredibly expressive use. For those who are turned off by overly operatic recordings that sound completely alien from the renditions of carols that we know and love, this is a much more low-key, accessible form of art music.

This disc is worth buying for the first and last tracks alone, a haunting Swedish number that is now so much part of my Christmas that I can't believe I'd never heard of the song until a few years ago (one track is the Swedish version, the other an English translation). Much as I love holiday music, I have to say that this is one of the only holiday discs I'll listen to throughout the year.

5 out of 5 stars Koppangen.......2004-10-18

Like another reviewer, I bought the CD solely for one song, Koppangen, which I had heard on a flight, and listened to over and over and over throughout the flight. It's a song that greatly moves me: the melody and interpretation. And yes I'd say for having a different sort of Christmas album to play during the holidays, this would be a good choice.

5 out of 5 stars Jesus is born again!.......2004-01-10

I did never take my time to write a review but for the cd time is worth it.

This cd is superb. I also saw her concert with his cd life.
It gives you a old fasioned feeling of a warm /close Christmas.

Christmas with a heart.

With her voice Anne Soie does do magic.

She is classical singer number 1 !
It's my best Christmas cd!

Yopu will have a lot of good feelings with this cd,

It is really, really by far worth it's money.
What is money in this case...

Good Luck,
Peacefull Christmas,

Home for Christmas is not your run-of-the-mill "listen to me, I'm an opera singer lavishing my gorgeous voice on these pretty Christmas songs" recording.

Anne Sofie von Otter's fans have long-since learned to expect the unexpected from this exceptional singer and, on this recording, now several years old, that's what she offers - the unexpected. With only a couple of exceptions, the songs are traditional Christmas fare, though usually with an added twist: the distorted rhythm that makes "Tomorrow will be my dancing day" really dance, or the jazz blue notes that take "Have yourself a merry little Christmas" to the cocktail lounge. (In this, as well as White Christmas, Ms. von Otter bears more than a passing resemblance to another great cross-over artist, the late Eileen Farrell.) In this free rhythmic treatment, Deck the Halls, arranged for accordion and violin accompaniment, is much less a fa-la-la madrigal than an introspective folk-song that builds on its own momentum. In contrast, the simple hymn, Beautiful tone Star of Bethlehem, which Ingvar Wixell recorded many years ago on his Christmas offering, shows Ms. von Otter's lush voice to full effect.

Her subtle use of vibrato in "I wonder as I wander" (along with a provocative arrangement) captures the Scotch-Irish influence on the folk music of Appalachians without being a condescending parody while the marimba accompaniment and fiddle obbligato to the French "Il est le divin enfant" evoke an unidentifiable folk music - is it Spanish or French countryside? Or, is the point that it is universal?

True, a couple of the arrangements stretch beyond my endurance: Although Ms. von Otter does lavish some beautiful tone on Cantique de Noel (O, Holy Night) I found the over-echoed, new-wave arrangement irritating and White Christmas, rather than being nostalgic verges on surreal.

In total, there are twenty songs, each a little gem of interpretation. As I mentioned above, sometimes I don't really like the interpretations or arrangement; however, I never doubt for a moment, that Ms. von Otter believes what she is singing; her commitment to communicating through music is never in doubt. By the way, her English diction is exemplary - a lesson for many singers for whom English is first language.

5 out of 5 stars Great Christmas album.......2001-11-27

I have never been one to buy much Christmas music -- why bother when for the month of December I can hear the stuff everywhere I go whether I want to or not. So, it's a real treat to find a disc like this one that I just want to listen to over and over again. I bought it last year and it was kind of depressing when the season was over and I had to stop listening to it until next Christmas. Anyway, the other raves for "Koppangen" are spot on: it really is a very warm and moving song and I'm glad it appears twice on this disc. There are several carols that are unfamiliar to most English listeners (me included) but they soon become favourites. And even the weird arrangement of "White Christmas" with its minimalist and almost slithering string accompaniment grows on you after a while if only for its ability to amuse. Definitely a must-have for fans of Anne Sofie von Otter or those looking for something a little different.

1 out of 5 stars At least Jeff Buckley was singing in tune.......2007-06-23

I enjoy classical, jazz and pop, etc... music pretty much equally. Quality is what counts, and is essentially what's missing in this album. "Grace" is just out of tune and has lost of its grace at the same time. Clearly someone is in need of extra song writer royalty money... Enough said, this is best avoided...

3 out of 5 stars the effort was worth it.......2005-04-11

Interesting CD. It should have included Mojo Pin, and Jewel Box, but what do I know about what rock songs lend themselves to string quartet arrangments? Someone as eclectic as Jeff is bound to have some. The stand outs: Morning Theft, Nightmares by the Sea, and Lilac Wine. Lilac wine is a bit more fitfully drunken, and a little less sweet than Jeff's. All the other songs are also good and explore every facet of Jeff's songs. Hats off to these intelligent musicians. A Tim Buckley song, Song to the Siren, is included. Suggestions for the String Quartet Tribute to Tim: Buzzin' Fly, Blue Melody, Ashbury Park, Morning Glory, Sally Go Round the Roses, Strang Feelin', Sweet Surrender, Pleasant St, Sefronia, I Woke Up, and Dream Letter.

4 out of 5 stars Quartets at their best.......2004-06-22

The ability to transcend music genre is something that isn't easy to do. Jeff Buckley is the most amazing musician of the 90s and quite possibly this generation. This tribute is exactly that, a tribute. This cd only exerts Jeff Buckley as a more astounding musical icon. String quartets are beautiful in themselves. You add Jeff Buckley's riveting harmonies and palpatating riffs and you get something beautiful. Beautiful like Angie.

1 out of 5 stars Wish I could rate this DISGRACE with zero stars........2004-06-18

I agree with mzannetou and Michael Davison. This is an absolute disgrace to Jeff's memory.

      4 out of 5 stars I give it a four.......2003-11-22

Of course, we'll always miss Jeff's voice. I found these arrangements of Buckley's music to be an interesting exploration of his songwriting --which is unique and intelligent. Also interesting to point out that "Corpus Christie Carol" is actually based on a composition written by Benjamin Britten, a well known classical composer. The arrangements and performances on this album are solid. Overall I found this to be an intelligent, sensitive homage to an artist who, in such short time on Earth, influenced a great number of people.
