Album Description

Just before Gram Parsons cut a wide swath through American music with Sweetheart Of The Rodeo-era Byrds and the Flying Burrito Bros., he forged a new musical genre with the seminal 1967 country-rock sides he cut with his legendary International Submarine Band. Sundazed Music, in conjunction with Shiloh Records, is proud to present a compact disc release of the ISB's highly collectible Safe At Homealbum, taken for the first time from the pristine, two-track stereo LHI-label masters, now sporting accurate original artwork, rare photos and a revealing new essay by noted author Sid Griffin. We've added the last piece to the jigsaw puzzle by remarrying the originally unissued track "Knee Deep In The Blues" (recorded during the Safe At Homesessions) to this resoundingly important musical statement. It's a young, confident Gram Parsons here, showing the world he's ready for business and firing the first volley in an amazing—if too brief—career that would soon stand the! rock `n' roll world on its ear.

5 out of 5 stars The only problem is that it is not long enough.......2005-11-21

This is a fairly short album by today's standards, but this album shows that today's standards are pretty crappy. "Miller's Cave" stands out in my mind the most.

5 out of 5 stars gram's 2nd best album.......2004-12-31

i love country rock. i mean real country rock, not the pre-fab stuff that comes out of nashville these days. this album is the real stuff. in fact it's the first country rock album ever recorded and gram parsons at his absolute best. he only topped this effort once, with the great "the gilded palace of sin" (the flying burrito brothers first album ). the cd's only drawback is that it's 28 minutes long (which was not unusual for albums in the late 1960s). it was recorded in 1967. before his stint with the byrds, before the flying burrito brothers, before he went solo, before drugs and alcohol got the better of him. everything he did on "the gilded palace of sin" he pioneered here. it turns out gram parsons made a prototype of his later masterpiece. this cd is it. i can't get enough of it.

4 out of 5 stars + 1/2 stars...Blueprint for Country Rock.......2004-12-11

Gram Parsons has as legitimate claim as anyone for recording the first country/rock album with this late-1967 recording by the International Submarine Band before jumping ship to join the Byrds on their SWEETHEART OF THE RODEO project.

The standout tracks are the self-penned gems like "Blue Eyes" (which was released as a single), "Luxury Liner" (which Parsons devotee Emmylou Harris would cover a decade later), and "Do You Know How It Feels To Be Lonesome" (which Parsons would revisit on the Flying Burrito Brothers' debut).

There are equally strong performances on covers of Merle Haggard's "I Must Be Somebody Else You've Known" and Johnny Cash's "I Still Miss Someone." The original album's nine tracks are augmented on this CD reissue by the bonus track "Knee Deep In the Blues" (a hit for both Marty Robbins and Guy Mitchell), which first appeared on the Gram Parsons anthology SACRED HEARTS & FALLEN ANGELS.

The band is joined on these recordings by Jay Dee Maness on pedal steel, Earl "Les" Ball on piano, and future Burrito Brother Chris Ethridge on bass. While the album is relatively short (it clocks in at just under 28 minutes), the pure, raw country sounds on this disc became the template for all country/rock bands that followed in their wake. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

5 out of 5 stars My Favorite Group EVER!.......2002-10-15

Frogpond is an amazingly talented group that will (hopefully) continue to make music for years to come. This CD--their latest--combines more styles than 1996's COUNT TO TEN, including an acoustic solo (the song "Empty Room"), an upbeat punkpop anthem ("I Did") and a satisfying rock-rant about working ("Get Paid"). This album has something for anyone and everyone--and it deserves wider airplay. But then, a true music connesiour can find the best above the rest! Skip Brittney Spears, N'Sync, and all the pre-fab Rap groups--Frogpond is the real thing!

OK hard chick rock similar in tone and style to Fetchin Bones or Mary's Danish. I didn't really like it but it is fine for the genre, stand out is `World Clash'.

5 out of 5 stars Little Known Band Puts Out Very Solid Album.......2000-01-10

I had never heard of Frogpond until our local college radio station (KLSU) started playing one of their songs in light rotation. On the strength of a few listens to this song (the name of which escapes me), I was able to tell that this band had a fresh sound and was more interested in self-expression than in hit-making. I bought the album, and now it is my current most-played CD. I really like it quite a bit, and I look forward to witnessing the further development of Frogpond as a band. I just hope they never sell out.

    4 out of 5 stars Remarkable.......1999-09-27

Frogpond should be extremely proud of this album. They've gotten incredibly good at the labors of creating music, and the purchase of this disc would be no mistake for someone looking to acquire a new up-and-coming band in their life.

    5 out of 5 stars Extraordinary Composition.......2003-02-27

Safe Home is an excellent song. The lyrics and music very effectively create a mood that is tangible and undeniably real. The memorable guitar solo feeds off of this mood and elevates this song into one you won't forget. Overall, this composition is a prime example of male expression and emotion while still maintaining a tough and practical edge.

    3 out of 5 stars Crossover.......2003-02-11

This is an Anthrax attempt for a radio hit. That being said, it's a pretty good song with a great chorus. I'm sure that the rest of the album will be along the lines of hard, thrashing Anthrax.

      4 out of 5 stars Country Rock in 1967: a milestone.......2004-08-16

This is an interesting record, to say the least: I can't think of anybody else who played Country Rock in 1967, the "Summer of Love" season. Even though this is one of the earliest published examples of a Gram Parsons performance on record, his voice sounds already very mature here and carries a lot of emotion across. Furthermore it features some early examples of his now classic song material such as "Luxury Liner", "Blue Eyes", "Strong Boy" and "Do You Know How It Feels To Be Lonesome", later re-recorded with the Flying Burrito Brothers. "Luxury Liner" has even more punch than the version covered later by Emmylou Harris. The real treat of the album though is a cooking rhythm section along with some great soloists, including John Nuese on lead guitar, J.D. Maness on pedal steel and Earle Poole Ball on piano. If you like pedal steel guitar, you're gonna hear some of the most sophisticated and progressive sounds on that instrument ever recorded. "A Satisfied Mind", "I Still Miss Someone" and "Folsom Prison Blues" remain as Country standards, but they are presented here in a fresh, unusual fashion. Try to get the mono version, the master is recorded on four-track!

      4 out of 5 stars Give it a Listen.......2003-01-01

This CD was previously released as "The Early Years." This album represents the best music that he recorded prior to teaming up with the Byrds and the Flying Burrito brothers. Even though it didn't sell many copies, it is still great music. The band is excellent and there isn't a bad song on the disc. If you are a fan of Gram Parsons, you should own this disc.

One minor complaint - It would be nice to have some studio outtakes or alternate takes.

As our friend from New Zealand says above, this is not the Russ Freeman you think. I had no idea two musicians could have the same name any more than two actors or bands could have the same name. Imagine if you bought a CD from a band called "The Beatles" only to find out it was a grunge band from 1990. Lesson learned? Read reviews before you buy.

3 out of 5 stars Not the Rippingtons Russ!!!.......2005-05-24

With regard to the previous reviewer please be aware that this is Russ Freeman the pianist NOT Russ Freeman the guitarist and leader of the Rippingtons. I believe Amazon need to separate the 2 into different pages but there you go.

I have not heard this CD so my rating is irrelevant but thought you might need a heads up in view of potential confusion. Go for the new Rippingtons album Wild Card - great stuff.

5 out of 5 stars A portrait of the Artist as a young man........2000-12-04

Anyone who loves real, honest, down to earth music should give this album a listen. Compared with all that has come since, it may be hard to put yourself in the proper frame of mind but hardly anyone was doing what Gram and his buddies did on "SAFE AT HOME" at the time. And even though this is technically far from being perfect, it represents to country music what the Beatles Anthology represents to Pop/Rock. Interviews I have read indicate that the musicians involved in this project weren't even the original International Submarine Band line up and that Gram was particularly unhappy with the piecemeal, overdubbed method used to record it as opposed to "live in the studio". In spite of all this the album has a timeless charm which captures Gram Parsons' talent at the moment it was about to kick into high gear. I first found this album in vinyl on a cut-out rack many years ago and while I later acquired just about everything commercially available by Gram Parsons, this will always be my sentimental favorite.

4 out of 5 stars a sign of things to come.......2000-08-12

this is not G.P.s greatest work but its still a very good cd.it is better than some of the later burritos work.DO YOU KNOW HOW IT FEELS TO BE LONESOME is just as good as the burritos if not better.the song BLUE EYES alone is worth geting this cd.it a solid cd all the way thought.FOLSOM PRISON BLUES is kind of a let down.eveything else is great. you also get the great g.p. song LUXURY LINER on here. MILLERS CAVE is a song i think gram worte in his first band the shilohs. its great to get the chance to hear kind of where he started.if your a g.p. fan get this cd while its still around.

5 out of 5 stars Gram Parsons' earliest masterpiece........2000-04-23

It's been said that with the exception of a few missteps. SAFE AT HOME is on the par of SWEETHEART OF THE RODEO. It's equally good, I think the mistakes are exaggerated. SAFE AT HOME is definately at the top of most similar releases. Yes, "I Still Miss Someone" isn't quite as realized as some of the later recordings (Nobody does that song like Emmylou Harris), but it was a blueprint. There are marvelous versions of Country standards like "Satisfied Mind" and "I Must Have Been Somebody Else You've Known". The Parsons' originals are exceptional. "Blue Eyes", the opening track, doesn't get all the attention it deserves, but it's an excellent song. "Luxury Liner" is awesome, as is "Do You Know How It Feels To Be Lonesome". Once you press play, you can't turn it off. True, Gram Parsons would make better masterpieces later in his too-brief career, but SAFE AT HOME is the first, and after you've listened once, unforgettable.

TRACK LIST: 1)Blue Eyes, 2)I Must Have Been Somebody Else You've Known, 3)A Satisfied Mind, 4)Folsom Prison Blues/That's All Right, 5)Miller's Cave, 6)I Still Miss Someone, 7)Luxury Liner, 8)Strong Boy, 9)Do You Know How It Feels To Be Lonesome?

          4 out of 5 stars Country's best!!!.......1998-08-13

If you've never heard Gram Parsons, you will probably want to start with the GP/Greivous Angel album from 1972. However, this is a fine example of Gram's new tradition. He has literally forged a new brand of popular music, but this birth of Americana seems to come without any birth pangs. This album is guaranteed to give a peaceful, easy feelin to all true country fans out there. A must have.
