Customer Reviews:
A criminally overseen band!.......2006-02-13
Satariel is one of the best melodic death metal bands, period! It's a shame these guys don't get more exposure because they are far more superior to the likes of Soilwork and In Flames. This album is everything a melodic death metal fan could ever ask for. Powerful production, incredible lyrics, melodies that make your spine shiver, industrial styled synth work, and vocals that shift from gutteral growls to black metal-esque screeching to beautiful clean singing. Overall, this album smokes and should be added to any metalhead's swedish metal collection. Oh yeah...a few Devin Townsend moments are laced within the music too. Listen to the chorus on track 3 and tell me that doesn't sound like Devy. Buy this album now !!@!!
...and all this for a mere $0.01 is a steal. I ordered my copy from here and the shipping was more than the cd itself. It was brand new and still in the shrink wrap too. I don't understand how an album of this quality was so cheap. I would pay 20 bucks for this masterpiece. Oh, well...saves the money.

Floyd meets Pantera.......2006-12-30
Early Floyd influence is heard in Phobos. Along with that there can be heard tinges of Pantera's "Dimebag" influence in the guitar playing.
I love the sound effects which are very sounding like Fripp, Floyd and The
Hoax. Piggy was an exceptional guitarist and much apart from other metal bands. This is why I believe them to be progressive because they tried different things in metal

Phobos rocks!.......2007-03-24
Wow! This is GREAT cd, and I have been missing out on it for quite a long time! This cd is very chill and smoothly put together. There is not one bad song on this cd, and at no point does it fail to deliver good sounds. I usually listen to it when I am working on my art projects. The only downside is, it nearly IMPOSSIBLE to get ahold of this cd! I looked around forever and finally found one! They are not in production anymore, and are probably hanging out on people's shelves very scratched up due to heavy play! IF you can find this cd, do yourself a favor and buy it.
An obscure and hidden gem.......2006-07-09
I first heard the song "Soul of desire" somewhere and I wanted to hear more, so I bought the album solely for that track. When I finally received this album I was instantly impressed by the rest of the songs. Out of 13 tracks, the only one I don't like is Suna. That's a pretty good find in this day and age when most of my CDs have only a few songs I really like.
I only wish Phobos had more CDs I could buy.
Thank you for all the kind words - PHOBOS-.......2006-06-01
Hi all! I just wanted to thank all the PHOBOS fans who have supported me over the years. Your kind words have been such an inspiration to me. I am happy to announce that I have my first new release in four years coming out.
The CD is under my project name, Mysteria and the title is "Tempting the Muse".
If you liked PHOBOS I think you might enjoy this one. I look forward to hearing from you guys!
Peace and Love,

"This is Music of the sensual moments and ecstatic states..........2003-09-26
...within us all."
I'm a major fan of great cover art. Phobos seized my attention instantly. Contemplate it for a moment. As I sit in the dark of the night, listening, I feel transformed. It's as if for now, I'm the woman on the cover. What do you think I'm feeling? More than I can tell you. Mainly, I feel totally calm and floating upwards to Beyond. My mind is at peace, yet sometimes thoughts/visions/dreams enter to momentarily break the peaceful state. I consider them briefly, but now is not the time for worldly cares. Not while listening to this food for the soul. Breathe deep and be at peace. Be one with yourself. Only then can you truly help others. Grow daily. Remember the kindred spirit hearts of people that have inspired you and carry them with you always. The heart knows no boundaries. If you are continually seeking in this life and wish to continue to flourish in your unique journey of life, Phobos is for you. Comment on Track 9, "Weightless." It seems to reinterate what I've told you. This is the first time I've read the lyrics. Isn't that bizarre? Hmmm. "Feeling weightless, floating weightless, feeling free, traveling on a thread of sound. A sliver of light exposing your inner soul swirling above feeling weightless. The Spirit Rises from time and space. The Spirit rises, form without a face. Feeling weightless...traveling on a thread of sound."
Soar!

Unique Prog. Heavy Metal/ Fusion Sci Fi Thrash.......2006-12-26
I really love this band. I first discovered this band when I found a copy of Nothingface in a cut-out bin full of cassettes back in the early 90s. Nothingface appealed to me because of the art work and the fact that they did a remake of Astronomy Domine. When I heard it, I really liked their unique fusion of metal, prog, sci fi themes. I also picked up Angel Rat and appreciated that one also. I kind of forgot about this band and the years passed by. Later, I was saddened to learn that their guitarist passed away. He was an amazing talent. I have recently bought most of Voivod on CD and I would recommend all of them. Phobos is my favorite. It is strange, futuristic, dark, mysterious and very progressive. It is also one of those albums that makes you listen again and again. The Tower is a powerful song. I know there are a lot of Eric Forrest haters out there but I think his voice really fits this strange, heavy music. Voivod really captured something on this one.
Another "Exodus" album.......2006-04-28
This album is another poor effort from Piggy and Away. The mix on this album is the same as on 'Negatron'. Eric Forrest's vocals and bass playing is "death metal-esque". He is a fan of death metal and has brought in the death metal scene into Voivod. Death Metal does not fit in with the Voivod profile and should not sound this way. This album is too different from the previous albums with Snake and Blacky. Eric Forrest is a joke! He's like the Kurt Cobain of death metal and became a "control freak" in the band. This album is Voivod's second worst effort. True Voivodians would be diapointed.
One of the best of the '90s.......2004-07-22
I was surprised to read here that this was voted one of the best metal albums of the '90s. I thought it was my secret, or at least something of an original thought on my part.
This is basically the counterpart to Dimension Hatross, just as Negatron was the counterpart to Killing Technology. Compared to Negatron, the song structures are more complex and the album is more atmospheric. Negatron may be easier to bang your head to, but Phobos is deeper and more disturbing; ultimately, more rewarding. "Phobos" is (or is related to) the Latin word for fear, and the vocals, musical interludes (including some accordian) and dissonant tunes convey this feeling of fear, desperation and desolation. Yes, dissonant is a good word to describe the overall sound of the songs. Eric Forrest holds down steady and simple bass lines while Away performs perfectly as usual, and Piggy creates the sounds and bizarre chords that only he can. This time, as previously mentioned, with a specifically Dimension Hatross feel.
And if I recall correctly, the dude from Men Without Hats co-wrote a song.
I've seen the 'Vod twice live. One time I looked back and there were about a dozen other people there. Sad. I'm glad Voivod is still around, though I find their newest album (with newest member Jason Newsted) to be too flat. It's a faulted stab at recapturing The Outer Limits. They got the order wrong. The Nothingface sound was next on the list to revisit...
You should really buy this album if you appreciate any of the following:
-death metal
-totally underappreciated musical geniuses
-industrial
-darkwave
-progressive metal
-psychedelia
Voivod's best (and weirdest).......2004-02-09
This may be my favorite metal album ever. I've never heard anything like it. It works on so many levels. It's experimental, yet unlike a lot of experimental metal, it rocks. While you're banging your head, you find yourself being taken on a very strange and rewarding ride. Dissonant chord progressions, strange drum patterns, excellent and very original vocals by Eric Forrest (his bass work can be a little colorless at times, but overall it's pretty good). Actually some pretty cool lyrics, too, which is unusual for Voivod. The sound is entirely original and very atmospheric-- it creates its own world of bleak but fascinating landscapes. The best track is probably "Forlorn"; there's a riff in there that's complex and very progressive, yet so catchy it's almost painful. The cover art by Michel Langevin is excellent, too, very artsy and weird.
Spacey, dark and highly original........2003-04-17
This album shows Voivod going straight for the throat on a very spacey and unaccesible approach. The experimental approach on the album makes for one of their most unique experiences. Eric Forrest on bass and vocals is underappreciated by many Voivod fans, ironic since many of the old school fans thought that Voivod was "selling out" on Angel Rat and Outer Limits and one of the factors was the increasingly mellow and melodic vocals of "Snake". Don't listen to the negative reviews of this that says "Voivod went death metal" or whatever. Yes its a bit heavier than they were in the early nineties but no heavier than Killing Technology or Dimension Hatross by contrast.
I personally think they lost something when they did the self titled one. I hate to see Piggy gone, but this is probably his and the bands best work other than Dimension or Nothingface. I would compare this to Celtic Frost's Monotheist because it is alot of their attributes taken to their most logical extreme. For example, the spacey industrial influences the band had are in the forefront here. (updated June 2007): The music is complex, bleak, and everything they set out to do. On Frost's monotheist, the doomy gothic feel they went for is brought to full force (though not as good as Voivod on this). I was dissapointed in the two newer albums, even though the last one was done posthumously (R.I.P Piggy). Eric Forrest was not the Ripper Owens of the band, in fact I almost wish they would have carried on this direction, because people who hear the newer albums think all their previous material sounds like those more punky, refined albums.
