1998 album for the Music For Nations label by the British hard rock quartet, sort of a mesh of '80s metal vocals like Scorpions and '90s grunge rhythm a la Soundgarden. 11 tracks, including 'Lonely Tonight', 'Go Down' and 'Blue Sky'.

Awesome Set!.......2007-07-01
I am a huge fan of Jerry Goldsmith. They did a great job preserving his vision. I can listen to this collection for hours. Great music!
Elmer Bernstein Film Music Collection.......2006-11-03
This is compilation of hit film music from one of the greatest composers in motion pictures. What is surprising though is the music not included like the Ghost And The Darkness, the 13th Warrior, Rudy and others. To be sure, 4 discs are not enough for a composure of this stature. THe recording, however, is an "engineering masterpiece" which makes the music even more enjoyable than when you first heard it at the movies. When are we ging to get the music that was omittd from this compilaton?
Overall a strong Goldsmith sampler.......2006-04-11
Okay, this is a CD review, so the focus is on music, but I've got to say this first: this has got to be a contender for the ugliest cover art ever. I mean, come on...instead of a tribute to the composer, the cover looks like someone spilled a glass of merlot over a NASA photo.
Fortunately, even an ugly cover will not ruin good music. And the good news is that I'd say about 75 percent of the music is good....and on a 4 cd set, that's a lot. Like other Silva compilations, the strength of this compilation is the variety. There are selections from the big releases (Star Trek, Omen, Rambo), but there is also a healthy dose of tracks from the smaller releases(Under Fire, Lionheart, The Swarm).
Two examples come to mind. Capricorn One and The Great Train Robbery are two movies that are not exactly household names today, but are dominated by two of Goldmith's finest main themes. The City of Prague Philharmonic come through with terrific renditions. And there are plenty of other strong performances...a few being concert versions conducted by Goldsmith himself. Suprisingly, "The Wind and the Lion" works, which is no small accomplishment given the ferentic original performance of "Raisuli Attacks".
It's not a complete success. A few of the performances fall flat, particularly some of the more inventive scores. Total Recall is just bad, mangling the performance with poor percussion and synthesizer choices to boot. Also a letdown is the Klingon Attack from the first Star Trek movie. The Prague Philhamonic attempt doesn't sound bad--it's just that once you've heard the original soundtrack's "blaster beam" with enough bass to rattle your teeth...well let's just say Silva's version is a little tinny in comparison.
But I shouldn't dwell on the negative. Overall, this is a strong sampler of Goldsmith's variety. There are plenty of quality performances here, and despite a few omissions (noticeably Planet of the Apes)this is a very good release from Silva.
Jerry Goldsmith - 40 years of pleasure.......2006-02-22
It was wonderful to hear Mr. Goldsmith's music that went all the way back to The Man from UNCLE, The Waltons, Dr Kildare, etc. And then to hear his music up to the present. The man was a genius!
Almost the perfect compilation.......2005-12-31
Age has its value.... This sweeping collection of compositions brings back so many great memories. This collection shows how significant Goldsmith was for both the movie screen and the small screen. With such a grand collection, every reader can be assured that at least one movie or TV program they like or remember had Goldsmith's contribution. It was an amazing life and the collection well worth having.
However, as sweepig as it is, there are a few holes in the selection. "First Contact", one of the sweetest and richest compositions from the Star Trek is absent. "The Ghost and the Darkness" is missing and the "Medicine Man" music should include the theme song. By dwelling on several selections from the Blue Max, these were squeezed out. Three full and important movie themes got the axe.
However, all but "The Ghost and the Darkness" are readily available and not overly expensive as is the "Ghost" CD. This is a must have for the TV and movie music fan.
Before there was Hans Solo there was Napolean Solo, before ER there was Dr. Kildare. Jerry Goldsmith IS Sci-Fi. "Resistance is futile.. you MUST assimilate this CD collection."

Fire down under.......2007-01-18
This album started Riot's slight claim to fame and is fantastic. Most definitely worth the buy. Riot remains one of the most overlooked bands of the 1980s best.
Underrated Hard Rocker.......2007-01-17
This hard rocker from Riot has been undeservedly lost in the shuffle. The hot opening track, "Swords and Tequila", possesses irresistible drive and energy. Another prime cut is "Outlaw", with has a good alternating feel shifting from the verse to the chorus and back again. The lead guitar work isn't overwhelming, but that's not the point of the album; almost every track is under 5 minutes, varies in arrangement from one song to the next, and has a solid groove. No 8-minute guitar solos here. The lyrics are better than many others in this genre, as well, but quite tame; if you get off on profanity-laced lyrics you will be disappointed by this one. But the songs really rock, so who cares?
Pre-hair metal masterpiece.......2006-08-10
This was what heavy metal was like before Def Leppard put out Pyromania and Ratt emerged. Heavy, great solos aggression and excellent songs. Once the mainstream caught on, it neutered the aggression and became posing. Listen to this album and you'll understand why metal caught on in the first place. Not a bad cut on the entire album. This album and Restless And Wild (not Balls To The Wall) by Accept show how brilliant early 80s metal can be.
Quality example of early Eighties rock/metal.......2006-08-07
Growing up in the early Eighties and rocking to bands comprising the NWOBHM and the emerging metal scene in the U.S., you'd think that one would be familiar with RIOT. I had never heard of them until two weeks ago when I happened to stumble across a review of them here on Amazon. I'm blown away. I am obsessed with this album. It rocks front to back (with the possible exception of the two bonus tracks at the end - depends on your taste). Definitely one of the top 100 metal albums of all time. They have a sound all their own. In my opinion, the guitar solo during the final two minutes of 'Feel The Same' is the highlight of the album. Anyone obsessed with early Eighties metal, or a fan of good rock guitar solos, should definitely add this masterpiece to their collection. 'Fire Down Under' is solid and will not dissapointe. It's heavy, melodic, and motivating and the musicianship and vocals are first rate. A superb effort from RIOT.
Fire still smokes.......2006-03-02
I first heard this classic back in '81, when it was first released, and it still sounds great today.I agree Riot should have made it big,but anyone with the "High Vaultage" issue knows why they did'nt if you read the liner notes. It definately deserves it's place on Kerrang's top 100 Metal album's of all-time. Is that a mink that appears on their album cover's and does anyone know why they chose it?

An Integral Goldsmith Score.......2005-08-06
Composer Jerry Goldsmith's 1983 score for "Under Fire" was an immediate classic and should have won the Academy Award. After languishing in obscurity for several years, the original soundtrack finally is available on compact disc. Though not among Goldsmith's best-known compositions, "Under Fire" is a superb recording that demands repeated listenings.
Bajo El Fuego Del Maestro Goldsmith.......2004-12-07
"Under Fire" may not take place in Venezuela, but I feel so impressed by how Jerry Goldsmith created what I consider to be one of his greatest works. In order to convey that Latino feeling -at times, Mexican -, Goldsmith used castanets and a guitar, played by the gifted Pat Metheny.
'Bajo Fuego' is the main theme of this album, and you can notice how the guitar and other Latino instruments are played in a somewhat relentless rhythm, with a quiet bridge. This theme is repeated to good effect in 'Sandino'. The love theme is so beautiful and touching. And, in my opinion, Goldsmith wrote one of his best themes ever for this movie: the theme for Rafael is a great epic piece that arouses the Latin spirit that is in me, especially when it's heard in the end credit track 'Nicaragua'.
Listening to "Under Fire" makes me feel proud of being a Latino, and it also makes me sad because this is one of my favorite Jerry Goldsmith scores, and he is no longer with us.
The quintessential Goldsmith score.......2002-07-14
Some might say Goldsmith's best is Star Trek, some might say Patton, some might say Chinatown, and some might even say The Omen or Poltergeist or Alien. Some people that value originality over merit might even choose Planet of the Apes (I forgot, I'm not supposed to insult that 'classic'). But for me, while a few other scores will come close, I must say without a doubt that Under Fire is the quintessential Goldsmith score. For years this soundtrack was only available as a Japanese import priced at over [$$$]. Now Under Fire is back for the public to enjoy, at a fraction of that price.
And though I credit Bill Conti as having at least a little talent, and I won't even go into how much I admire John Williams and Return of the Jedi, I would have to say that this score takes the cake as the best score of 1983. This is one of the few scores that I can listen to multiple times all the way through without becoming even the slightest bored. Under Fire, the movie, wasn't all that bad, in fact it was rather good, but Jerry Goldsmith's score is without a doubt far beyond it. Under Fire stands along The Empire Strikes Back, E.T., Out of Africa, Agnes of God, Hoosiers, and Glory as the very best of the 80's. Buy this before it goes out of print. You WILL NOT regret it. This score stands as a testament to the magnificent genius that Jerry Goldsmith has displayed in small bits throughout his long prolific career (which we all hope will continue till his very last hour). ...
one of his best.......2002-05-17
This has to be one of Goldsmith's best work, yet it has gone unnoticed by many. When will Goldsmith get the recognition that guys like John Williams, James Horner, and Hans Zimmer are getting. I am not saying that those guys are bad, but Goldsmith has done some amazing things with his career and it seems like he hasn't been awarded the same as those other guys. So far I have over fourty Goldsmith scores, and am working on getting more, and each one is unique and wonderful with very little borrowing of his own work, like Horner or Zimmer and a little bit of Williams. If I could I would give Goldsmith a life time achievement award for all his work. Thank you Jerry Goldsmith for your wonderful work!

Captures Barbieri's Virtuosity and his Few Weaknesses.......2006-04-28
This album is apparently two albums put together. I am familiar with "El Gato," an album that is hard to find and too bad because it has wonderful songs on it, some of which are on this one. They are "Merciditas," "Ninos," and "El Parana" and "Vidale Triste." The first three are powerful compositions, affording Barbieri many opportunities to showcase his passion for music, his soaring altissimos, and his versions of John Coltrane's wall of sound (tens of rolling, boiling notes, packed into a time frame that is literally unbelievable). In addition, the percussion, piano and bass voices are all compelling, especially some of the bass lines, which, inspired by Barbieri's visions, scamper about and bubble up out of sheer joy.
When expressed through music, romantic (sexual) passions can take on spiritual or universal dimensions that far exceed the parameters of the original inspiration. Music can reframe our perspective from a stationary being in a stationary room to the reality of an object spinning in a circle on a globe that is whirling around a star that is itself twirling around a galactic center whose galaxy is flying around a galactic cluster. Good musicians always keep their eyes on the center as they trek through the dizzying loops of infinite forms (circles, ellipses). Some of the views the musicians on "Bolivia/Under Fire" offer up are truly spectacular. They are adept at contorting tempos almost beyond recognition, only to have them come careening back with added vigor. This, to me, is the most powerful kind of jazz fusion, where the violence is continually mitigated by sensitive hands.
Barbieri often starts at the destination and moves in retrograde fashion, which makes for some rough contours and sudden shifts. This is because he is intoxicated by visions and unconcerned with the future. Contrasted with this impulsiveness is the perfectly formed and developed structure of "Merciditas." On "Ninos," the most dramatic song, Barbieri pulls out all the stops, and lets out screetching altissimo wails near the end which are followed by a weathered descending line that is wonderfully fatigued. Meanwhile, the bassist has been charmed and his rubbery, supercharged notes fly about maniacally before drifting airily into the folds of Barbieri's luxurious curtain. Barbieri creates the musical equivalent of a South American revolution, with lots of little kids running around with machine guns.
This music has the anonymous character of, say, gothic art. And, like that art, it is engulfed in suffering and insights.
I usually do not listen to "Eclypse/Michellina" or "Bolivia" in their entirety - Barbieri can get overbearing and amateurish at times too. Another weakness is on "Antonico," a short, beautiful latin composition that he botches (in my humble opinion) by overproducing multiple sax voices that are spliced together rather clumsily. This ravishing melody needs only one voice, one that is allowed to convey its romantic thoughts in an unhurried manner, without interruption. Instead of the certainty of love, we get its confusion. I think what he was trying to achieve here could have been done, but by having multiple sax voices only in the last iteration of the melody, which would convey the scattering of the personality that romantic passions can produce. In the recorded version, they come in too early and muddy the water.
Some of Barbieri's vocals sound like an animal dying in the rain forest and do not produce the desired effect. (He's kind of a nutty guy.)
But this music is very powerful, has something existential about it, reflects what is now an extinct animal: the human being evolving, in touch with God. The musicians are more like supplicants, sacrificing themselves in the music, which is liquid and runs. The early 70's were heady times, especially in New York, where this music was recorded. Nothing else I've ever heard surpasses the intensity recorded on this album.
Soaring Melodies and Dense Rhythms.......2004-12-16
I remember the days when Gato Barbieri became the toast of jazz. Caliente had recently been issued and the song Europa was all over jukeboxes and FM radio. It was at long last a North American breakthrough to the mainstream for a man who had toiled in relative obscurity for the better part of two decades. Caliente is today still a best seller for him, but what about his other work?
Old-time cognoscenti and early-adopters of Gato Barbieri can be thankful now that his pre-Caliente solo work on the Flying Dutchman label is being reissued and made available to those of us who are second or third-generation Barbieri fans. I remember listening to more knowledgeable jazz fans talk of Barbieri when I was a young teenager but I never got to hear what they were talking about until Caliente swept the airwaves. I did eventually obtain Bolivia on cassette, but it certainly didn't have the rich fullness of sound as does this CD.
Gato Barbieri is perhaps the best tenor saxophonist of my lifetime and starting with the fabulous Merceditas, he wastes little time living up to that accolade. Soaring melodies and dense rhythms envelop the listener in a state of entrancement as the music progresses.
The entire CD is good, but I particularly enjoy Merceditas, Bolivia, Ninos, the frenetic El Parana, the smooth, flowing Antonico and Maria Domingas. Barbieri's rendition of Atahualpa Yupanqui's Yo Le Canto a La Luna demonstrates his rarely presented vocal ability.
If you are a Barbieri fan who came to his music upon the release of Caliente or later, you owe it to yourself to get this and hear where he came from. If you are an early fan, well you just need to get the CD and give your scratched up LPs a rest. Double your pleasure and order this today!

The Essential Andreas Vollenweider surveys the Swiss harpist's career from his 1981 worldwide debut, Behind the Gardens, Behind the Wall, Under the Tree..., to 2000's Cosmopoly. In 1981, Vollenweider was a breath of fresh incense capable of creating sweet, poignant melodies with an electro-acoustic harp that reached from deep bass lows to shimmering highs. As Vollenweider's music progressed, world-music elements came to dominate his sound. Sometimes, as on "Belladonna" from 1982's Caverna Magica, the fusion resulted in world-music kitsch as Middle Eastern and Brazilian vocals wafted over snappy lounge rhythms. By the time of 1984's White Winds, Vollenweider had coalesced his multicultural approach into sweeping suites. The Essential Andreas Vollenweider concentrates on his upbeat, jazzier material, leaving the more textural, emotionally ambiguous pieces aside. Nevertheless, there's a breadth of vision represented on this CD that shows a musician always searching. Vollenweider's albums are meticulously recorded, with each instrument given its own space, creating an encompassing sense of architecture. But the remixes here improve the sound dramatically, especially on the earlier works. For the Vollenweider fan, there's nothing new here, but for the uninitiated, this is a good place to begin exploring the works of a New Age pioneer. --John Diliberto
Customer Reviews:
A Must Have Harp Album.......2003-07-01
Andreas Vollenweider has created great music and this has his best songs. The only other album I own by him is "Dancing With The Lion". My dad bought the cassette a long time ago, I listen to it sometimes but not a lot. Andreas Vollenweider is the second harp player I heard, the first was Hillary Stagg and I can see a big difference in their music mostly because of the background instruments.
All of the songs on the album were good but I found "Wanja The Wanderer" a bit strange and so did my dad when he listened to it, so I don't think I'll get his album "Kryptos". Here are my favorite songs: Behind the Gardens, Flight Feet and Root Hands, Belladonna, See My Love, Moon Dance, Dancing With The Lion, Night Fire Dance and Cor Do Amor. The only reason I gave the album 4 stars was because some songs sounded a bit strange.
The bonus material on this CD includes: songs with new mixes, mulltimedia cd including the music video of pearls and tears and a new song "Pace Verde"
If you don't own any albums by Andreas Vollenweider and are thinking of buying one I would recommend this one the most but if you already have this one I would recommend "Down To The Moon".
I hope you enjoy his music!
A Musical Experience.......2002-03-28
This composer has never let me down from the very first time I heard his CD entitled, Down To The Moon. I was in a restaurant having lunch, and even though I was having a conversation with three other people, I was constantly drawn to the music playing in the backround. I asked the waiter for the name of the composer. After lunch, I ran out and purchased the CD. That was several years ago. I now have all of his works, and find that each one is as moving as the first time I listened to him. With this album, you'll get a sampling of his work, that will keep you coming back for more.
Less Than I Expected.......2001-09-16
I have most of Vollenweider's CDs already, but was willing to purchase this one because I was interested in the remixed versions. In my opinion these "new" versions have not changed enough to justify the price of the CD. However, if you intend to purchase only one Vollenweider disc, this would be a good one. My recommendation: purchase a used disc.
Not just "essential Vollenweider", simply essential!.......2001-04-29
Made in CAN in 2000, Serial# SK-89507, Playing Time 72:47
First of all, let me just say that, contrarily to what's stated on the cover artwork, there is NO multimedia section on my copy of this disc.
Still, this 12th album by AV covers material from all his albums, except his first (which, contrarily to popular belief, only half of which is on "The Trilogy" set), "Eolian Minstrel" and "Live".
The songs presented here have been remastered and remixed by AV and long-time percussionist collaborator Pedro Haldemann, and tend to focus on his more joyful genre. His early albums have also been remastered a few years ago, but the selections here contain some rich textures: his earlier works are a lot more new-age and "natural" than his latest offerings. "Stella" is the only track from "Cosmopoly", an otherwise bland and generally "ethnic" album: I would even suggest you listen to the sound clip from that album, and you'll be amazed to see what sounds can come out of his harp: much closer to classical guitar than harp.
An excellent starting point for the novice; if you enjoy, start gathering the albums chronologically, as you'll notice a somewhat significant departure from "Book Of Roses" forward.
from Solo Piano Publications.......2001-04-10
I have to confess that in all the years I've been listening to new instrumental music, I've avoided Andreas Vollenweider because I really don't like harp music. When I received a copy of "The Essential Andreas Vollenweider" for review, I kind of thought, "Oh great - another harp CD." Vollenweider's is such a huge and well-respected name that I decided that this would be an opportunity to educate myself. Many "best-of" and "greatest hits" albums are compiled by labels without any input from the artists, but this collection was chosen by Vollenweider himself from albums dating from 1981-1999. Several of the older tracks were remastered by Vollenweider, so this was a great chance to get to know a bit about this artist. It really didn't surprise me that quite a few of the songs were familiar from radio play, but I was surprised that many of them I never would have guessed as being played on harp. Vollenweider developed his electracoustic harp, which has quite a different sound from the standard acoustic harp. In addition to the harp, Vollenweider sings and plays wind instruments, guitars, accordion, keyboards, percussion, and "special fx". I was also surprised at how much I found myself enjoying this album! Musical influences can be heard from all over the world, and most of the music is lively, rhythmic, and infectious. I especially like "Moon Dance", "Dancing With the Lion", and Pace Verde", but the album as a whole is a wonderful sampler for those of us who are relatively new to Vollenweider's music, and is an excellent "best of" collection for his longtime fans. I will definitely be adding more of his music to my collection! The CD is multimedia-enhanced and contains the music video to "Pearls and Tears". Highly recommended!

What a great anthology of 1980s R&B ballads........2007-07-25
If you (like me) grew up in or were around during the 1980s then this 2-CD set is not to be passed up. Classic hits by The Gap Band, Teena Marie, Regina Belle, The Manhattans, Freddie Jackson, Billy Ocean and other great R&B artists which became Quiet Storm staples are all included here...with crystal-clear sound quality. Play it to relive all those memories or to set the mood for love with that special someone...either way, it's GUARANTEED to please.

Continental - without the jingles and bells!.......2000-12-31
Simply wonderful with a continental, sophisticated and European flavor! Have images of entering the elegant lobby of some posh European hotel - like the Ritz on the Champs Elysee. The combination of piano, cello and violin are inspirational, meditative, and joyously reflective; and, resonate sounds from holidays past that need to be heard in the new millinneum!
The Very Best.......2000-01-05
This is a wonderful CD. If you love chamber music, piano trios or just good Christmas music this one is highly recommended. I've had it for over a year now and have even secretly listened to it in the middle of the summer, just for the wonderful arrangements. So inventive. Love the sound they make.
Music at Home.......1999-12-24
This is an exquisite combination of classical and popular Christmas standards. The texture of the arrangements and quality of the recording make this album sound like you have three friends playing in your Music Room while you're in the kitchen baking. Highly recommended for children, for appreciating good sounds, and for adults, for a simple, basic lovely set of songs.

Customer Reviews:
Courage Under Horner.......2006-12-13
"Courage Under Fire" is another excellent work by James Horner. When 'Hymn' opens the CD, you can tell you are in front of a great score; it's very touching and it best conveys what the two main characters in this movie are going through. There is also great action music, especially in 'Al Bathra/Main Title' and 'Monfriez's Suicide', with Horner's signature use of percussion, as well as intense thrilling moments as heard in 'Night Mutiny'.
This album is so good I virtually listen to it twice in one single playback. It almost passes as a guilty pleasure, but this is one fine work by James Horner that can be considered a classic.
A Solemn Tribute to Fallen Soldier.......2003-01-19
The score is a fitting tribute, almost like a hymn, to the fallen soldier. If you like the soundtracks for "Saving Private Ryan" or "Band of Brothers", you would also like this one. It's kind of melachonly, but not melodramatic, and it transpire the sound of heroism of those who make the supreme sacrifice in the brutality of war.

The best EP I've ever found.......2002-05-11
This is, hands-down, the finest extended play record I've ever heard. Every track is an excersise in original, dark, atoal songwriting. Walter's Organ and Paul's tremeloed guitar mesh over Matt and Tom's rhythm. Great drumming, spare, haunting, heavy bass. Finest tracks are one, three and four, but the others are just about as excellent. This short-lived but unparalleled band released several stellar eps, but the Dreamworks album and this are all that are left on the market. Do not pass this release by.
Tremble Under the Perfection.......2001-04-13
This CD is fun and addictive. Tremble Under Boom Lights is one of the best songs ever recorded. How I wish that there were more than 5 songs on this CD. The songs will be circling in your head for days, and you'll have a smile on your face the whole while.

Essential........1998-07-18
An absolutely stunning 5 song disc. "The Search For Cherry Red" and "Give Me Daughters" are destined to be classic. Walter Martin's organ and Stewart Lupton's vocals are the best 1-2 combo in music today. This EP is perfect.
