5 out of 5 stars Gypsy Fire.......2006-08-28

Great Music althought I still prefer the Gypsies of yesteryears'style. Still I am very gratefull that those superlatively gifted young peoples are perpetuating the Russian Gypsy Music Tradition.

5 out of 5 stars Authentic folk Russian Gypsy sound.......2004-01-25

This isn't pre-packaged, restaurant entertainment Gypsy music; it's very folky, heart-felt and juicy stuff. This has famous ex-Loyko guitarist Vadim Kulitskii, but the violinst is what has me estatic over this CD. The trio consists of Kulitskii, Russian accordianist Oleg Nehls (playing the Bayan or button accordian) and Oleksander Klimas on that violin. The guitar is reminiscent of Django Reinhardt in the fingering and picking, but this trio is 100 percent Russki. Very wonderful, especially the third cut on the CD "Gypsy Soul." Wish my grandmother were still alive to enjoy this--she hailed from Kiev and adored this music.

5 out of 5 stars Russian Gypsy has the Fire.......2004-01-18

I received this CD as a gift. I was skeptical as I am fussy about the arrangements and performing of all, especially Balkan and Gypsy, music. I thought that it would be another "Gypsy Music Light" produced for the masses and profit- far from it. The music is authentic; excellent presentation with back to basics playing. Clean, precise instrumentation- no slides, squeaks, etc- superb musicianship. And the Rom Fire is definitely roaring under Kulitskii with his emotional vocals.
He has full empathetic musical comradeship in Oleg Nehls and Oleksandr Klimas. Klimas' range of sounds (including a "Canary" as captivating as that of the late Sandor Deki Lakatosh) alone is more than worth the price. Had it not
been a gift, I would have gladly bought this Cd.
At full price......
A must-have for the serious afficiando and beginning listener. alike.

5 out of 5 stars Jeff Scott Soto Rules!!!.......2006-01-26

Jeff Scott Soto (Eyes, Yngwie Malmsteen, Axel Rudi Pell) is one of the best vocalists alive. He has power in his voice than very few can match. If you love melodic metal/rock then this cd will be like heaven. He has brought on Marcel Jacob (Malmsteen, John Norum) and Christopher Stahl. This cd was originally issued in 1990 & re-released in 1993 with bonus tracks. But this cd has 25 songs including demos and live songs. If you are a fan of Jeff you have to have this cd in your collection. Their second cd "Genesis" is very good as well. Standouts are: EVERY SONG!!!!

5 out of 5 stars The best Talisman album.......2007-01-10

After a long wait for the next Talisman album I find it was worth the wait. This is their best to date. You can't beat the teaming of Jeff Scott Soto and Marcel Jacobs.

5 out of 5 stars Best Talisman Album!!.......2006-11-01

These guys are a great rock band led by the brilliant, melodic and powerful vocals of Jeff Scott Soto. This album is Talisman's best work yet and showcases their outstanding ability to produce very catchy tunes filled with great vocal harmonies and massive killer guitar solos. If you're new to Talisman this is a great CD to introduce you to their style. If you already know how great these guys are then this CD should definitely be in your collection cause it is their best. It's time to rock!!

    5 out of 5 stars talisman-cats & dogs.......2007-01-05

This CD is simply wonderful!!! I suggest that you crank this one up. From start to finish these songs just flow. Since the recent news of Lead Singer:Jeff Scott Soto joining the SUPER GROUP-JOURNEY the Talisman have since decided to call it quits, so I would start grabbin up all there CD's.

    5 out of 5 stars Kickin Butt...Talisman back strong........2005-07-04

You know, everyone talks about Jeff Scott Soto, but the truth is, there is a reason he keeps Marcel Jacobs with him, because he kicks butt. Alot of people don't talk about the Bass player, but this one makes Talisman what it is...A Great Band. Why do you think he's compared to the great Billy Sheehan? This cd really showcases the talents of Marcel Jacobs playing. Great cd all around, voice, bass, guitar, drums. It is too bad this type of rock has died in america because this is what should be being played on the radio, not that alternative rock crap were they can hardly play riffs on the guitar let alone sing.

    5 out of 5 stars a great rock album.......2003-09-11

Counting all of Talisman's studio releases "Cats & Dogs" is already number 7. Since the debut in 1990 the band has gone through musical as well as line-up changes. But the main actors still remain the same, vocal-acrobat Jeff Scott Soto and bass-monster Marcel Jacob. Fredrik Akesson the guitar player from the "Genesis" and "Humanimal"-albums has returned for "Cats & Dogs", drummer Jamie Borger has also played with the band on a couple of albums. All 12 songs of "Cats & Dogs" are Soto and Jacob originals, so the band doesn't include any cover versions that were among the best songs on "Truth" and "Life". This time the band puts a lot of effort in making the hooklines as catchy as possible but we are certainly not talking about poppy songs. On the contrary every song is rocking hard; no ballads in sight ! The bass playing of Marcel Jacob stands out superbly in the mix; you can't help drawing parallels to Billy Sheehan and Mr. Big. "Outta My Way" is a neck breaking song in the tradition of "Addicted To That Rush" and it showcases a duel of bass and guitar in the solo section. The Opener "Skin On Skin" kicks off the record with a splendid hookline, the same can be said about the slightly funky "In Make Believe". A bit off the beaten path goes the very good AOR song "Sorry". Some tracks like "Lost In The Wasteland" and "Hell In Paradise" are provided with a more gloomy guitar sound from Akesson. With "Cats & Dogs" Talisman deliver their best sounding album to date and most of the songs are destined to become the band's glory days....

5 out of 5 stars Back to the sound of humanimal.......2003-06-03

The boys are back with their follow up to truth and the truth is it blows truth away. Back to the way I like to here Talisman. From melodic to heavy, Cats & Dogs packs a nice punch. Marcel is really pluggin' away on the bass on this album, just listen to track 5 and you will agree. Anyone who enjoyed Humanimal 1 & 2 will enjoy Cats & Dogs.

4 out of 5 stars Another one from Sweden...........2002-02-21

Alright, another power-melodic-metal band from Sweden...Big deal, you'd think... But Nocturnal Rites is full of strong points. In other aspects than the terrible cliched lyrics, the band is better than most. The keyboards not overwhelm the songs. The singer knows when tobe restrained and when to go for it with lungs full! The band does not try to prove they are better than the rest, so they don't try to make those awful orchestrated arrangments.
THE SACRED TALISMAN is sheer epic metal, and not a presposterous attempt to be symphonic!!

2 out of 5 stars Blah, boring, trite.......2002-01-12

Title says it all. I find this CD to be tedious and devoid of any musical inspiration. End of story.

5 out of 5 stars Where's my sword and armour?.......2001-11-06

Let's put this into perspective - Nocturnal Rites are not making any excuses. Yes, the lyrics are cheesy, and now we know what the singer of Europe has been up to since singing about Final Countdowns, but this is pure fantasy/power metal at its finest.

Great melodies, fantastic guitar playing (crossing over influences between late 80's Maiden and Malmsteen), and loud in your face type anthems (without the hysterical 'whoa whoa's' that damage Hammerfall). The singer has the strongest of Northern European accents, even pronouncing the 'r' in 'Iron', but all is forgiven for the overall effect of simple fantasy heavy metal. That's where Nocturnal Rites succeed - they follow the power metal recipe perfectly without trying to sway away and make for the trendy crowds at the bar. Even Iced Earth can be accused of losing the plot from time to time - as witnessed in Horror Show, but Nocturnal Rites stick to their guns.

By the way, check out the guitar solo in "Legend lives on" - turn up the volume and feel those goosebumps!

4 out of 5 stars Is it possible not to adore this record?.......2001-09-11

There are many CDs in this world that take several listens to acquire a taste for. Even some of what become my favorite records go through this process. "The Sacred Talisman" was not one of these records, and it probably won't be for you, either, if you like power metal. The opening riff of the first song, "Destiny Calls" captures the listener instantly, and song by song, "Talisman" never lets go.

I often go through the mental debate as to whether I prefer this record or HammerFall's "Legacy of Kings." If you liked "Legacy" you owe it to yourself to get "Talisman." Each contains some incredible power metal. But, as was the case with "Legacy" I can't really give "Talisman" five stars, simply because this record doesn't display a whole lot of originality or sophistication.

Nevertheless, some of my favorite songs are on here ("The Iron Force" "When Fire Comes To Ice" "Glorious"), and every song is good. Also, the singer, Anders Zackrisson, was my favorite power metal singer when he was with NR.

If you're into the 80's style, sword-and-sorcery bands of power metal and you don't own "The Sacred Talisman," you owe it to yourself to buy it IMMEDIATELY.

5 out of 5 stars Impressed yet again..........2001-09-01

Nocturnal Rites has the best music! I love everyone of their cds, and this one sure didn't let me down! There is a little bit of everything for all tastes, except maybe you country bumpkins...;) Highly recommend!

      Customer Reviews:

      5 out of 5 stars amazing performer.......2007-05-09

Natalia is in my opinion a great singer and musician. She can make you shiver through your spine while playing her guitar or singing. Her fingers move so softly on the strings, but the sound that comes out is outstanding and her voice, which can remind of Ani Di Franco's, is awsome. I think she deserves a great success. So if you like Ani di Franco or similar singers, well, this cd is a MUST.

5 out of 5 stars Truly talented artist.......2006-10-17

I was fortunate enough to hear Natalia open for Willy Porter last weekend and I was so impressed by her voice and amazing guitar playing that I purchased this cd. She has such a great range - jazz, blues all with a little New Orleans feeling. I would recomend this to anyone interested in listening to something off of the beaten path or someone who can appreciate great guitar playing. This is the kind of cd where you want to listen to every song.

5 out of 5 stars Another great CD from this legendary melodic rock band!.......2007-02-08

Talisman are an awesome melodic rock band led by the powerful vocals of Jeff Scott Soto. I have to say that every CD by Talisman is really very good. Their unique style of melodic rock has a certain groove that just lets each song flow perfectly. They always mix it up with a great balance of heaviness and ballads but the common thread between different songs and albums are the powerhouse vocals. This is a re-release of their album Humanimal in which you get a second CD filled with bonus material and demos. Great value for such outstanding music. Definitely worth buying if you're a fan of Jeff Scott Soto or Talisman and also recommended to fans of the melodic rock genre.

      5 out of 5 stars WOW!.......2005-03-28

      The Good
DVD 1 - Live at Club Mondo Stockholm, Sweden August 2003: This is a small club show that consists of a fifteen song set. "Break Your Chains" has a heavy, repetitive riff that is followed by Soto's momentous vocal chops. The chorus is melodic with enhancing background vocals. Both guitarists take a turn at soloing. A muddy bass line dominates "Color My XTC". Jeff's vocals are just as strong as his desire for the lady he sings of. "Skin on Skin" opens up with a piercing lick and a soulful wail from Soto. The track continues with an addictive lick. Man, Talisman are horny.

"Tears in the Sky" is flush with blues-based riffs and speed metal runs. The harmonic chorus, bass, and guitar solos set this one over the top. "In Make Believe" starts with a clean arpeggio run until the break-beat drum patter kicks in. Soto carries the slow parts with passion and the up-tempo parts like a man possessed. "Scream of Anger" is packed with driving muted riffs, quick-finger licks, and plenty of screaming of anger. "If Only You Would Be My Friend" is made up of seventies styled funk riffs, and is about enduring friendship.

The crowd jumps in on the ohhh...ohhh section of "I'll Be Waiting" and on the chorus as well. A two minute bass solo leads into the hard-charging track "Outta My Way", while a one minute guitar solo leads into the energetic "Standing On Fire". The energy never lets up throughout the whole performance. After the show are some clips of the band reacting to the performance.

Live at the Sweden Rock Festival June 2003: This is a show in front of a much, much larger audience. It's an open air venue. Talisman's set for this performance is comprised of ten of the songs from the Club Mondo set. I assume they had to cut the set down by five songs due to time restraints. The only real differences with this performance are slight: solos, song length, and song order.

Sound wise I prefer the smaller club setting, but the open-air show is still good. It's also shot in black and white. Bonus Features - Multi-angle views of the Club Mondo show for the performances of "Mysterious", "If You Would Only", and "Outta My Way". You get four different angle shots on the left side of the screen, with the main shot showing on the right. You can toggle between the different views on the left, and they will appear on the right.

DVD 2 - Retrospect - The Movie: A look at Talisman from their early years to 2003, featuring videos, live performances, backstage, and on the road footage. The video for "I'll Be Waiting" shows that the group dressed glam like everyone else in 1990. The video for "Mysterious" was shot during the recording of the song back in 1990. Three live performances from a show in Japan back in 1993 are included. They were taken from a previous home video release. The video of "Color My XTC" has Jeff Scott Soto looking like the Uni-Bomber. It's even shot in the woods. Two performances from a circus or carnival show are included that were shot with a home video camera. Four performances from the Lokerse Festival in 2003 are included as well. The crowd is huge. The `movie' ends with a video from their last studio album Cats and Dogs, "In Make Believe"; the video chronicles what you just watched on the DVD. Bonus Features - include a discography, a shred video, a segment called naked bass player, and `Eating My BLT 2004". You can experience those last two yourselves.

2 CD - Disc one is the Club Mondo performance and Disc two is the Sweden Rock Festival performance.

      The Bad
DVD set and CD set are sold separately.

      The Verdict
After viewing the double DVD and listening to the double CD, I official have 17 of Talisman's greatest hits burnt into my brain...and that's a good thing! The DVD is the most complete retrospective I've seen, plus you get two current live performances from the group in support of their current album. I like the contrast between the small venue show and large venue show. Since most of us can't take the DVD in the car, the double CD makes a great audio compliment. WOW!
