From Amazon.co.uk

Here's Dave Grohl as you've seldom seen him before: not just live, but as the title Skin And Bones may hint, stripped down to his acoustic core. Well actually, not quite. Rather than just Grohl and a six-string, this collection--recorded at the Pantages Theatre in Los Angeles--harks back to the ensemble feel of Nirvana's 1994 album Unplugged in New York, familiar songs rebuilt by the Foos and a cast of musicians including violinist Petra Haden, keyboardist Rami Jaffee, and even a member of that now legendary Nirvana session, Pat Smear. Stripped of the anthemic breeziness and solid, muscular riffing that have become Foo trademarks, Skin And Bones relies more on prettifying the arrangements with strings, shakers, and slow splashes of cymbal, and occasionally uncovering new levels of pathos beneath the sweat and grit. "Walking After You" feels custom-written for this format, while the crescendos of "My Hero" gain a little more humanity in this more intimate setting. And when the bigger hits come, Grohl makes up for the absence of feedback and fireworks with sheer frontman charisma, summoning up some throaty Springsteen emotiveness on "Best of You" and climaxing with a heroic "Everlong." --Louis Pattison

5 out of 5 stars An Unqualified Success.......2007-07-16

With this CD, the Foo Fighters prove beyond any doubt, or argument, that they're the real deal. Grohl can write and arrange for any style and get impressive results. Beautiful, melodic arrangements that are perfectly executed by the band, this disc gives you a new perspective of the Foo Fighters. Only time will tell for sure, but I think this will become a classic.

As for the sound quality: It's mastered a little too loud, resulting in some compression, but it's not bad. I think Grohl has enough control in the entire process that he doesn't allow the record company boys to ruin his work. Good for him.

1 out of 5 stars Soupy soupy soupy.......2007-06-08

Is this the new John Denver? Has he channeled Dave? I can imagine Curt and John having a few giggles wherever they may be giggling from. Isn't this why there is alternative music in the first place? I wanted a live CD of the good stuff, not this bowl of warmed over soup.

Country and crooning...what else do you guys listen to to satisfy your lust for John Denver?

3 out of 5 stars It doesn't rock!.......2007-05-21

OK, I love the Foo Fighters, They're my favorite band to see live. This is an acoustic album...somehow I missed that in the item description. I like it a lot, it hits you in a different way than the normal rockin blarin Foo Fighters that I love. But it hits you none the less...

1 out of 5 stars I will never buy a CD again.......2007-05-19

So many awesome songs and they make them sound terrible. Do you love Everlong? I do, but this is the worst version ever. THIS ALBUM IS A DISASTER.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous Foo Fighters.......2007-03-09

I bought one of these for me and one for a friend who is an AVID music collector. He likes the Foo Fighters but hasn't been a raving fan of them until this CD. He ranks it among his top 5 best ever (he has 1000's of all types of music). Don't be intimidated that it is a live recording, they keep the crowd noise to a minimum, unless it is enhancing the recording. Unlike many live recordings where the crowd noise is obnoxious on this recording it isn't noise, but rather interaction with the performers. This will likely become your favorite Foo Fighters CD, especially if you're an "acoustic" junkie.

With Show Your Bones, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs follow up to the heralded Fever to Tell Karen O economizes on the screaming that so marked the trio's debut EP. And oh how she exceeds her oft-noted influences (PJ Harvey and Chrissie Hynde, for two): Whether she's hanging back with a staggered beat on "Phenomena," or riding on the kick-drum-pounded opening to "Honeybear," she's always ready to disappear in a burst of Nick Zinner's guitars and Brian Chase's drums. The YYYs thrill precisely because of their keen mix, Karen O spiking the upper ranges (dig the caterwaul in "Mysteries") with a sharply cut vocal line or a simple, full-bodied singsong delivery while the guitars spin thick storms of sound before retreating to atmospherics (try the transition from the quick throttle of "Cheated Hearts" into the Cure-ish "Dudley," for one example). And marvel at how well radio would be served by blasting the acoustic, pleading vibe of "Warrior." Fabulous. --Andrew Bartlett

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars cool, rough rock.......2007-05-20

It's hard to create a new sound in rock these days, but the Yeah Yeah Yeahs manage to do it on this albumn. The rough overdriven guitar, straightforeward drumming, and raspy vocals all combine beautifully to create this unique sound. In exploring new indie rock, this one is a real find.

4 out of 5 stars YYY's second LP shows depth & growth........2007-05-17

Ever since I heard them a few years ago, I've been hooked on the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. I first heard the diverse and fun Fever To Tell, and while that didn't have a lot of depth, it didn't really need it. It's one of those that sold because of how much it rocked. I recently got around to the debut EP, which was also quite good as well. On this album, lots is added that wasn't quite as present as on the other albums.

Karen O kind of reminds me of Tegan and/or Sara on some of the tracks. She does a lot more singing on here and less yelping than in previous times, but it's not a boring record. I think "Honeybear" sounds like the "old" YYY's. I've always enjoyed Nick Zinner's guitar riffs and some of the stuff here is actually quite interesting. For one thing, half of the lyrics are cryptic, like stream of consciousness tracks. Then you get the ones about unrequited love like "Cheated Hearts," one of the album's finest tracks, if not the finest.

Songs like "The Sweets" show an added musical depth. The track is simple, yet I like how it all flows together on the track. It sort of sounds like a demo, actually, but one mastered to CD quality. This one also emphasizes the group's new wave influences more than the previous works. There's really no filler on here.

I remembered being really crushed last fall when I missed out on seeing them. Oh well, there's the records to make up for the lacked experience. This record makes me still interested in whatever comes next from the group. Judging by this record, they'll be around for awhile.

3 out of 5 stars A bummer of a follow-up........2007-05-15

Buy the first album instead.
This one is alright...but lazier.Fever To Tell

5 out of 5 stars So far their best album........2007-04-15

The Yeah Yeah Yeahs have provided a sound different than other bands. This is the second, and in my opinior far superior album. Even my friend who said they hated the Yeah Yeah Yeah's heard a song and said they loved it. I definately reccomend it.

4 out of 5 stars Something like a phenomena.......2007-04-09

The Yeah Yeah Yeah's are a band that rides mostly on their personality. More specifically, on that of Karen O. Her various styles of singing, from emotive singing on the acoustic "Warrior" to the rock bark of "Gold Lion," Karen leads the YYY's like few women other than Chrissie Hynde. But just a front woman does not a band make, and Karen's bandmates Brian Chase and Nick Zinner make enough variations of racket behind her to make "Show Your Bones" a distinctive CD.

There are also a few great songs to be found here. In addition to the aforementioned "Warrior" and "Gold Lion," there is the snazzy "Phenomena" and the catchy album closer "Turn Into." Not quite as slick as Garbage or as classic as The Pretenders' best work, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs are somewhere between the two, and inching towards brilliance.

The rawest '50s rock retains an irresistible pop culture gravity: indeed, the farther one moves away from it in time, the more compelling--and often intoxicatingly alien--it can seem. Produced with fervent devotion by Rhino roots-rock veteran James Austin and featuring a detailed, track-by-track annotation by rockabilly guru Colin Escott, the 101 tracks on these four discs (fully a third of them making their American CD debut) reinforce that notion at every turn. The oft-dizzy, lust-crazed music here argues that the set's "punk" appellation is but marketing-driven redundancy, even as the range of its rockabilly riches gratifyingly defies the attempts of the set's contributing pundits and musicians (including James Burton, the legendary axeman on many of the tracks, as well as Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top, Rev. Horton Heat, and The Blasters' Dave Alvin) to define the genre.

The set shrewdly uses expected contributions from Elvis, Carl Perkins, Buddy Holly, Link Wray, Jerry Lee, the Burnette brothers, and Gene Vincent as but familiar anchor points for a journey that bounces from coast to coast (and the UK, courtesy of Johnny Kidd's great "Shakin' All Over"), fueled by a high-octane brew of folk, country, and R&B on its ever-manic, guitar-driven thrill ride. Underappreciated pioneers like Bob Luman and Wanda Jackson are showcased along the way, as are early efforts by eventual stars in other genres (including Buck "Corky Jones" Owens, George "Thumper" Jones, and Canadian Ronnie Hawkins, later to become the Band). But it's the loopy, reverb and echo-drenched side of one-hit (and no-hit) wonders like Freddie and the Hitchikers' theremin-crazed "Sinners," sex romps like the Caraways' "Ballin' Keen," and John & Jackie's downright heated "Little Girl"--not to mention a virtual parking lot full of Cadillac tributes from Vince Taylor, Sonny Fisher, Larry Dowd, and Joyce Green--that are the true treasures of the set's pop archaeology. --Jerry McCulley

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A Perfect Primer & Introductory Lesson Into The World Of Primitive 1950's Rock & Roll.......2007-07-21

Here it is kids, the ROCKIN' BONES: 1950's PUNK & ROCKABILLY box set from Rhino, the perfect primer, audio handbook and introductory lesson into the dark and dangerous back alleys of primitive 1950's rock & roll. "Rockin' Bones" is that glorious monophonic soundtrack for an inner city gang war, a high school parking lot rumble or maybe even an occasional back road juke-joint knife fight. Contained in the clever JD (juvenile delinquent) paperback sleeve packaging are one hundred and one (101!) vintage fallout tracks from that primeval atomic fusion of raw rhythm n' blues and electrified country; the real mushroom cloud that birthed modern rock. Now, the term "punk" in the title might be more of a marketing gimmick, meant to garner some of today's modern youth's limited attention, but it does go far in relating the anger, intense personal energy and effort-overcoming-inexperience that was a hallmark of both the 70's punk rock movement and the 50's rockabilly music explosion. The earliest track, ELVIS PRESLEY's single "Baby, Let's Play House" (1955) is bracketed on the other end by RONNIE HAWKINS & THE HAWKS' Bo Diddley romp, "Who Do You Love" (1963), so we have a nice 8 year overview contained in this package.

This collection is very similar to Rhino's 1999 box set "Loud, Fast and Out Of Control," and in fact, 15 songs are repeated here. But where LF&OOC was primarily a rock & roll overview of the mid-to-late 1950's pop music scene, ROCKIN' BONES focuses a bit closer and more deeply on those unsung heroes and obscure innovators who never were able to crack the Billboard Top 40. Thankfully, many talented guitar totin' teens and sex-starved singers had access to early recording technology and were able to commit to quarter inch electronic tape their own local response to Elvis Presley's rise to nationwide infamy. Many of these songs were too crude, others a tad unpolished and most a bit too "rural" for regular radio airplay. Another hurdle facing these would-be stars was that most of them lacked the necessary `do-re-mi' to promote, push and publicize their songs on a nationwide level. But there was always enough luck out there for hundreds (thousands?) of American teens to want to give rock n' roll a shot.

Where to begin? Sure, there are a few obvious cuts here like LINK WRAY's "Rumble," CARL PERKINS "Blue Suede Shoes," EDDIE COCHRAN's "Summertime Blues" and BILLY LEE RILEY's "Flyin' Saucers Rock `N' Roll", but it's not like you're going to hear these on your local "oldies" station anymore, are you? ROCKIN' BONES also contains some mind bogglin' obscure-o-billy gems like FREDDIE & THE HITCH HIKERS "Sinners" (complete with eerie "Scooby-Doo" Theremin effects), RONNIE PEARSON's "Hot Shot" and CORKY (a.k.a "BUCK OWENS"!) JONES frantic alcoholic anthem "Rhythm And Booze". I counted a total of 4.5 female orgasms contained in JOHN & JACKIE's 2 minute & 12 second version of GENE MALTAIS' "Little Girl" (that John must be one hell of a lover!). Deserving artists like RONNIE DAWSON, GENE VINCENT and BOB LUMAN are represented, but it's extremely cool to see/hear rockin' gems from still performing rockabilly legends ART ADAMS ("Dancing Doll" & "Rock Crazy Baby"), PAT CUPP ("Long Gone Daddy"), WANDA JACKSON ("Fujiyama Mama") and GENE SUMMERS ("School Of Rock `N Roll"). A real cool audio bonus are the dozen or so "movie trailer" snippets from classic exploitation movies of the era, interspersed throughout the set -you might even want to peek out from the backseat and see what's playing on the drive-in screen! The pace of this box set never really drags and the cuts are all choice. You're guaranteed to find an old favorite and an undiscovered treasure on each disc.

One of the big reasons I'm so hot on this reissue package is that it's an American born project. So many of the better quality reissue series and more enjoyable 1950's rockabilly compilations of the past 20 years have come from across the Atlantic where classic 1950's style, culture and music never seemed to go out of style or become a greasy joke. Bear Family, Ace Records and a host of other fine labels have kept the rockabilly flame alive for many years, but it's rare that a U.S. company would take the time and effort to put together such a deluxe package of classic rockabilly essentials. You get four (4) long-playing CDs with 25 tracks per, (26 on CD #4!) and a slick paperback book with essays from producer James Austin and modern day rockabilly "guitar god" Deke Dickerson. You also get amazing track-by-track anecdotes from noted music historian and author Colin Escott. I'll be the first rockabilly cat to admit that "looks" always count for something and this box set does look great! The outer sleeve has built-in creases, dings and spine rolls -it looks like it was already crammed into your Levis back pocket a few times! The sound is fantastic. All of the tracks presented here are properly remastered onto CD for the first time -thanks to Dave Schultz & Bill Inglot at DIGIPREP. The wonderful thing about rockabilly music is that it always sounds great - whether it's coming through a cheap transistor radio in 1956 or a custom designed stereo system in 2006. ROCKIN' BONES is highly recommended, even if you already own the original 45 rpm records or hundreds of reissue comps. Give this to that friend or roommate who can't seem to understand what this whole "rockabilly" music & kustom kulture scene is all about -they'll finally get it.

-Del Villarreal

5 out of 5 stars Its a Rockabilly Riot!.......2007-06-16

I just picked this box set up the other day; I'd just gotten paid and this will be the last 'big purchase' that I allow myself for quiet some time to come.
It was completly worth it! The piss and vinegar drips off these songs in buckets, leaving one to wonder at the lameness of much of modern day Rock. The only thing that was missing was a loud cadalliac to drive in while listening to the music; but thats completely my own problem and has nothing to do with the box.
Check out the Wanda Jackson song on disc 4, its great; you also have to love "Graveyard Rockin" on Disk 1. Those are just two gems in this amazing collection.

5 out of 5 stars Rockabilly Heaven!.......2007-06-07

This boxed set is a must! And it's definitely worth the price. Every song is incredible. Much of the material is obscure to people who are not familiar with rockabilly music. This is why it would make a perfect gift for someone who likes this genre, but who doesn't have much of a collection. I will say that if one has a large rockabilly collection already, there might be some overlapping of songs between what's on this set and other CD's. I will also say that this is a wonderful introduction to this form of music. And also the booklet included inside gives very entertaining information.

5 out of 5 stars Rockabilly At Its Best.......2007-05-29

Every song on this four CD set is excellent. I enjoy listening to all four CDs. The CD set comes with a book with information about every song and artist and lots of photos. This was a great suprise when I opened the package. Just great music for Rockabilly Fans!

5 out of 5 stars Ask Rush if they write "filler" songs..........2007-07-14

A couple of earlier reviews state this LP is loaded with "filler material". I wonder what Al, Ged, & Neil would say to that.
For a band that prides itself on honesty and integrity, my guess is that Roll The Bones is nothing more than Rush's reflection of the times - musically and emotionally speaking.
I'll admit my favorite Rush LP is Moving Pictures, but I love a wide range of musical styles - and Rush have made some great music since 1981. I will also admit that not every song on this disc has moved me. "Face Up" and "Heresy" are the weak points for me. Favorites are Dreamline, Bravado, Where's My Thing, and Ghost Of A Chance.
The great instrumental, "Where's My Thing" was Grammy nominated for Best Rock Instrumental - but lost to "Cliffs Of Dover" by Eric Johnson.

Roll The Bones lives up to its name. Rush took some chances...missed the bullseye on a couple tracks...but still made a great record. Add this one to your collection.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome .......2007-05-17

While I'll grant that this effort by Rush doesn't sound a lot like the 70's stuff, and is even different than the 80's stuff, this is a fantastic record. I really liked Hold Your Fire, Grace Under Pressure and Presto. This one is better than all of them. Call me crazy, but this one is in the top 3 or 4 all time for Rush records. In my opinion, this is their best work since Moving Pictures. Don't get me wrong, Signals, G/P, Presto, etc. are good, as is HYF and even Counterparts. If you liked Rush in the 80's or 90's you will love this cd, guaranteed. This is their best effor since Moving Pictures and up to now (I haven't heard Snakes and Arrows yet). Most of it just plain rocks, and the song "Bravado" is a great look into winning at all costs, a song that resonates in my mind through the years.

4 out of 5 stars great...except for one song.......2007-03-28

Before I anger any diehard Rush fans, let me first say that I have joined your ranks. I, too, am a diehard Rush fan, and have recently acquired the entire Rush album catalog, including the live stuff. I like this album a great deal, with my favorite tracks being Dreamline, Bravado (really like this one) and Where's My Thing? The only exception to my completely liking this album is the title track. That rap piece in the middle of the song totally and absolutely sucks so hard, it could peel paint off your house. Thirty years is a little too long for a bunch of white guys from Canada to try to incorporate the horrific, mind-numbing noise that is rap into their music. This song is painful to listen to, and it's all I can do not to skip this song, which I refrain from doing out or respect for this band's otherwise brilliant catalog. I sincerely feel that rap music has contributed a great deal to the advancing idiocy of this country, and Rush's contribution here is just another log on the fire. Could we maybe travel back in time and just completely erase this song from the catalog of a supremely talented band and pretend it never existed? Please?

4 out of 5 stars Rock and Roll the Bones Rush style.......2007-03-27

Rush's first album of the 90's is similar to 1989's Presto and just as good. "Dreamline," the album's first track, is one of the best songs the group has ever written as it ties magic and mysticism with the subject of youthful minds wishing to stay young forever, plus it has a catchy intro, great hooks, and a solid guitar jam in the middle. All of the songs on this release have strength and will leave you with something to think about. Musically, the band mix the keyboard and synth sound with driving guitars, and continue their technique of showing how they can still evolve by adding a rap bit to the title track, and they pull it off with hipness and style. Some complained that the band didn't do anything outstanding with this release. Maybe that's true or maybe Rush were preparing the way for 1993's Counterparts, one of the best albums of their career, but they also didn't do anything ordinary either.

3 out of 5 stars Filler-Filled.......2007-01-05

Even though the album helped Rush get back to Guitar Rock, and regardless of the fact that there were much needed "hits" on this record, it still stands alongside RUSH and TEST FOR ECHO as the worst Rush records. The songs Dreamline and Bravado are amazing, not to mention perfect. Roll the Bones and Ghost of a Chance are "OK", but everything else is total filler. There are some brutally dated moments here, moments which are debatably worse than any of the skinny ties and pink loafers of the Power Windows period. I'm looking at you, White-Boy Rap.

Look, Rush is one of the best bands of all time, and pretty much every album is fabulous, but this one is slightly less good than PRESTO (while keeping it's bad, thin production), and doesn't come close to the heights they would scale next with COUNTERPARTS, their best 90's effort.

Get this album last, or almost last.

Album Description

Featuring contributions from Nile Rodgers, Phillip Glass, Al DiMeola, and others, 1983's Hearts And Bones is at once personal and ambitious, incorporating jazz fusion into Simon's signature rock/pop/doo wop vocabulary. Includes four previously unreleased bonus tracks.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars An extraordinary individual.......2007-04-19

Six years after his release of "One Trick Pony", Paul Simon released what could be argued is his masterpiece (he had so many), "Hearts and Bones" in 1983. This wonderful melodic work of art has a calm, cool disposition due to the four best songs in particular.

"Hearts and Bones", all the while commanded by Simon's soothing guitar chords contemplates the arc of a love affair in a unique way that only Simon can create.

"Song About The Moon" has, as Simon lyricizes, a spiritual tunish quality about it that seems to perfectly accomodate his quiet wandering voice. This is definitely an underrated song that's simply relaxing. It is just what it claims to be, a song about the moon.

"Train In The Distance" almost seems to revisit Simon's story telling ground where he left off in "Hearts And Bones", but in a different way. Bass guitar and vibes feel their way smoothly through with the cool backup vocals making this one of Simon's most memorable ballads, and the second most played song on my MP3 player.

Following is "Rene and Georgette Magritte With Their Dog After the War". This song is a wonderful compliment to the rest of the album. In it, the spaces between the notes are just as important as the notes themselves.

The rest of these songs are fantastic, most unusual being "Cars Are Cars" as you may have heard, but listen to it a few times and like me, it will grow on you. Accoustic and demo versions of 4 of the songs are included as bonus tracks, including previously unissued "Shelter Of Your Arms", a work-in-progress.
Certainly all of these songs work for this album as it paints a clear picture of Paul Simon's genius songwriting ability. He proves once again that he is an extraordinary individual.

5 out of 5 stars hearts and bones.......2007-04-10

commercially a flop album for paul. I personally rank it amongst his best work. Originally ment to be a simon and garfunkel album some of pauls best work is here. The late great johnny ace a song about violence in the usa links johnny ace jfk and john lennons deaths. Train in the distance is a classic simon song and hearts and bones is a great song about him and his then new wife carrie fisher. paul said after this album his career was so cold that no one paid any attention to his visits to south africa strange how things change his next album graceland became a best seller

4 out of 5 stars All great, with one exception.......2006-11-25

I first purchased this album when I was 15 years old and visiting France. I had just started playing acoustic guitar and learning all things Paul Simon but had no idea this album existed. It was all I listened to for the rest of my stay. Nearly 20 years later, I still love every song on this album...

Except for "Cars Are Cars" which I hereby state is the absolute worst Paul Simon song you will ever hear. Otherwise, this album is almost perfect. One of the most underrated -- and therefore most unheard of -- songs Simon ever wrote, "Song About The Moon", pops into my head more often than I care to admit. Originally, this was to be the Simon and Garfunkel reunion album, but at the last minute, Simon decided to remove Garfunkel and release it as a solo album. Does anyone know if the tapes still exist of Garfunkel singing on any of these songs?

5 out of 5 stars Paul's masterpiece.......2006-10-30

I loved this album since the first day I heard it! Therefore it became one of the very few 5-star rated albums in my collection. Generally, I like Paul a lot, but this album really takes it to the top. Starting with "Allergies" including Al Di Meola's stunning half-acoustic guitar lines, to the haunting "Song About the Moon", then the driving (almost disco-esque) "Think Too Much" (listen to the sarcastic "Hm..." after 38 seconds!) which is clearly marked by Nile Rodger's unique rhythm' guitar, to the soulful "The Late Great Johnny Ace". Did you see Simon & Garfunkel's video of their concert in Central Park? Just as Paul sang this song, a fan jumped up on the stage, but was caught by a security guard before he could get to Paul? Wow. Lennon's murder, this track (actually about Lennon) and then this incident. These are the moments rock'n roll is made of. Many thought (and think) this album is too lame. Sure, it has broad moments which are quiete, but if you are a sensible person who can feel the power of good lyrics you will disagree. I disagree. I feel that this is one of the strongest offerings Paul Simon ever released. The songs have an unequivocal quality, both composition and production wise.

...What is the point of this story,
What information pertains,
the thought that life could be better
is woven indelibly
into our hearts
and our brains.

5 out of 5 stars His Best? Arguable, But I'd Say So.......2006-01-28

It's difficult to even quantify how underrated this album is. It's absolutely fantastic, and features the best and most haunting of all the John Lennon tribute songs, "The Late Great Johnny Ace." "Hearts and Bones," "Rene and Georgette Magritte," and "Train In the Distance" are also masterpieces. Though it didn't have the kind of cultural impact that "Graceland" did, I actually prefer this album, and this reissue has some great extra stuff on it. If you like anything you've ever heard by Paul Simon, this is worth having.

Album Description

2003 album for husband & wife duo featuring 13 songs about Wal-Marts, lovers who chase the fire in the streetlights, the madness of very deep holes, a lake that can be visited in dreams, and the shadows that whisper inside a modern, office building. It is the Handsome Family's 6th CD with Carrot Top Records. Lyrics included in the sleeve.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Suprise.......2005-11-04

I came across the Handsome Family by way of an interview on National Radio(Radio New Zealand). I pulled into the motel car park dead tired after driving for 16 long hours, yet remained sitting in the car mesmerised by the strange and evocative music pouring into the car from the rain sodden night. Once in the motel room I logged onto Amazon and purchased Singing Bones.
The next morning I opened my eyes and watched the wardrobe sway around in a dreamlike fashion, much like the music I had heard the night before. Later on the news I discovered that I had experienced an earthquake. In the end it was my wife who claimed ownership of the CD, and she has played it constantly ever since and our 6yr old daughter knows the words to all the songs. What a great discovery, fresh pure music, greatly cherished by this family.

5 out of 5 stars Some place not meant to be found.......2005-08-19

Somber and majestic tales of the West written as if H.P. Lovecraft, Jack London and Manly Wade Wellman shared a wagon with the Donner Party between the last hopeful days of (that) Summer and the coming awareness of Winter's ordeal.

Spooky and uplifting simultaneously, the stories float through themes which evoke spirits both otherworldly (ghosts and dream visions),as well as the natural haunts of desolate, forlorn geography visited by wandering souls.

There is a strong "sense of place" within these twilight landscapes...the Handsome Family brings them to life. After all, these realms DO exist,...sometimes. somewheres. really.

Total CD time is 38:47 min.

4 out of 5 stars Murder Ballads.......2004-06-18

Husband and wife duo the Handsome Family has been making music for almost a decade that is somewhere between alt-country and traditionalist music. Brett Sparks is from Texas where he studied music. He moved to Chicago with his wife Rennie Sparks, a fiction writer originally from Long Island. Their music deals with dark themes and dark humor.

The Handsome Family's debut album, Odessa, was released in January 1995. This folk record was a home recording with a punk influence. Their second record, Milk and Scissors (1996), led to tours with Wilco, and more shows in Europe. Years later Brett was hospitalized with depression. Through the Trees (1998), the Handsome Family's third album was written and recorded in the aftermath of this time. This became their most successful record yet.

Around this time, they quit their day jobs and worked on their music full time. The result was In the Air (2000), which was another great record. The Handsome Family played several tours of America and Europe. A live record was released soon after. In the last part of this past year they released Singing Bones (2003). This record returned to early sounds and expanded their audience. It was voted as one of the best records of 2003 by Free Williamsburg.

5 out of 5 stars Rennie Sparks is the Gabriel Garcia Marquez of alt-country.......2004-03-15

What else can I say? Her lyrics contrast visionary, sometimes somewhat morbid settings with closely observed, incongruous detail. My favourite narrative from this record is "Song of a Hundred Toads," in which a string of disasters ---

Round a hairpin turn
The wagon tumbled o'er
And down the jagged rocks
Bill fell with all I owned.

--- leaves a man stranded in a desert, only as his final night falls to be greeted by the epiphany of the title: the song of a hundred toads. "The Bottomless Hole" strikes an H. P. Lovecraft note, but Lovecraft with a difference: it seems it's -useful- to have a bottomless pit behind your barn, even if you end up obsessed with the urge to explore it.

Moving to New Mexico seems to have added some new, somewhat more upbeat "western" seeming rhythms and chord changes to Brett's music. There are occasional touches of Spanish guitars, and on one song even a trumpet. The musical saw on "24 Hour Store" is another instrumental highlight.

As rap-metal hybrids continue to sell millions, Cypress Hill fills the "Bones Disc" of this two-CD set with a half-dozen hard rockers that keep things loose-limbed enough to incite the dance floor to something other than moshing. The best music the group has released in years, it shows that this decade-old act is still capable of surprise. The accompanying "Skull Disc" hardly delivers the same jolt, but should satisfy hardcore fans of the Hill. While Cypress Hill sound convincing and forceful over the 64 minutes of Skull & Bones, the record's lyrics have little new to say: most of these songs warn off would-be competitors, praise ganja, or complain about the hardships presented by the rappers' celebrity status. Still, the crunching "Bones" tracks and the occasional Spanglish verses show that this crew hasn't run out of spirit yet. --Bob Roget

3 out of 5 stars In my humble opinion ..........2007-03-26

I'm a fan, don't get me wrong. On disc 1, there's 6/10 songs that are winners, but "certified bomb" is just embarrassing. On disc 2, there are 2 good songs, and one (Rock superstar) is basically just a remix from disc 1. The other good one was Valley of Chrome. After that, the attempt at metal is pretty poor, and it was a bad direction to take. Sen particularly let the band down on this album (he was great on IV.)

5 out of 5 stars Love this CD!.......2006-12-26

Die hard Cypress fan and like them even more with this CD. C'mon folks, how many rap artists can do rock/metal? I dig it and I like the mix. I would rate this second to Black Sunday.

1 out of 5 stars No hits on this Skunk Weed.......2006-05-24

I love cypress hill but cant stand this album. Its just plain horrible to listen too. Its the only cypress hill CD I dont own. Ice T went this route in the mid 90's. It didnt work then and doesnt work now.

3 out of 5 stars B Real, Mugs, Sen Dawg.....What happend?!.......2005-10-16

Black Sunday was amazing, Temple of Boom was brilliant, IV was not there best but still a masterpiece.....but now? Something has happend to the Hill and let me tell you buddy, I don't like it! What the hell happend Muggs? You were an amazing Music Producer?! I'm sorry to say this but RAP wise this is 1 star material(no not because there was limited rap songs in it...because it was baaaaaaaaaad....very, very bad). In all honesty the first CD is horrible, there was not one track I liked except for semi funny "stank A-hole"...the rest are just average....plain........average. They want from brilliantly Dark/stoned raiders to horrible sucky, suck rockers...yeah that's right. And if you're thinking I disliked it because they went rock then you're absolutley wrong, I loved "Lightning Strikes" which had a dark rock beat to it in the Hills amazing "IV"...The only metal/rap songs that are good on this album are "Valley of Chrome" which reminded me of "Lightning strikes", "Get out of my Head" and "Can't get the best of me" which we get to hear some of Sen Dawg(Maybe it's just me but I think this is the longest Hill song that Sen Dawg has rapped in were els the others he's very limited in)....yeah the rest I really didn't like that much and "Rock Superstar" was meh for me... Very sad with you guys :( .....

If you're a CH noob and looking to start somewere first get there debut(which is still a superb album) and work your way up to IV and then.....just wait for a good Hill album and skip there last 3 albums...there just...average..

3.1/5 stars

4 out of 5 stars Good....For What it Is.......2005-08-11

Metal Rap bands tend to do poorly but these guys were different. They seem like their down with everyone and that's good. The talent level in rapping was very high but some of the songs fell flat with the beats etc. You should get this if you're into CYpress because they are good it's just that a lot of their songs aren't great.

5 out of 5 stars Rock AND Roll!.......2006-10-29

Barbara Keith had an eponymous vinyl LP in 1972 that I tracked down and purchased on CD (well worth the effort) learning in that search about her subsequent band, 'The Stone Coyotes'. All (so far) seven Coyotes' albums are terrific, with, in my opinion, "fire it up" and "Situation Out of Control" being the stand-outs. "Barbara Keith" was folk with considered lyrics. Barbara Keith brings every bit of that intelligent poetic sensibility to hard-core rock and roll with 'The Stone Coyotes'.

5 out of 5 stars The Stone Coyotes Continue to Amaze.......2005-04-20

I do not look forward to new albums put out by artist that I admire. Throughout my life I have been disappointed. Surprise! Surprise ! The Stone Coyotes dashed that theory and simply amazed me with their gut wrenching rock and roll and outstanding lyrics. From "All Dressed Up" to "Wakeup" the songs are all great. "Rectified" with its tale of murder sent chills down my back with its driving beat and tale of revenge. "Stars in Her Eyes" is one of the best songs of childhood dreams I've ever heard. Barbara Keith's phrasing is outstanding. The Ghost of Vicksburg settles the middle section of tracks with a great sentimental ballad of the Civil War. Next crank up the volume on The Girls of America. Major Powers chords about Girls who wantto rock. My daughter is now an avid Coyote Fan. This album is great.

Here's an awesome album for floating around back country roads in an old Volvo station wagon. This is folk-based pop music that's meditative, fun, and deliriously repetitive. If you've never heard the Fruit Bats, imagine a less ambitious version of the Shins, a well-worn copy of American Beauty replacing Seventeen Seconds on the turntable, and you're pretty close. If you're a devotee, you should know that Gillian Lisee is not on this record. In her stead we have Dan Strack, who played with principal singer-songwriter Eric Johnson in the poorly named but excellent band I, Rowboat. Spelled is a minor shift towards bigger things: the themes are more cosmic and the music sounds less like the product of bedroom strumming than before. "Earthquake of '73," "Lives of Crims" and "Born in the `70s" - these are big, beautiful, elegiac songs. Stick `em in a popular romantic comedy and watch this band become household names. -Mike McGonigal

Album Description

Around the release of "Mouthfuls", Harp magazine described the Fruit Bats as residing somewhere on a continuum between Califone and The Shins, combining "...the latter's widescreen vision with the former's melodic knack to create something at once familiar and new." This is Eric Johnson's enlightened Romantic opus - in the 18th century English literary sense of the term. With an emphasis on the bigger picture of life as it relates to nature's organic relationship to man and irrational, spontaneous moments of beauty and rebirth, "Spelled In Bones" proffers warm, thoughtful, bittersweet pop that's as hopeful as it is curious.

...my name is Rentz Leinbach and I'm going to be as unhelpful as I possibly can. I'm listening to a song from this album right now, this "fRUITbATS" album, here. It's a good song, it sounds a lot like the Shins. It's called Lives of Crime, I downloaded it. I'm not going to listen to any more of their songs in the near future because I have only just this one downloaded. It's a good 3 star song. I'd use it to assume a rating for this entire album. I might buy this album, but I have a lot of other albums I would buy before it. I want to buy a bunch of 70's progressive rock before I poke my nose back into all this Indie bull. I'm 17, I don't give a hot poker if you liked reading this or not. If you want to buy a fRUITbATS album, then you'll buy it regardless of what I say and you know it, so there. Don't base your opinion on other average joe's, believe in yourself and your ideas and let your own average joe-ness bloom to its fullest potential. G'night.

5 out of 5 stars Sweet and full of hope.......2006-11-01

This CD manufactures feelings reminiscent of my youth. Its honesty reminds me of my teen years, full of curiosity, in my room listening to The Smiths or The Damned. There is something more striking about this CD too, as if they know exactly what and where we end up. I hum Born in the '70s during meetings, putting a sweet spring in my step.

3 out of 5 stars Half an album.......2005-09-27

The first half of this CD is very enjoyable, catchy, melodic and fun. The last half is horrible. The band must have hurried to get the album out to fulfill a contractual obligation. The first half is filled with 60's pop influences, i.e. Beatles, Velvent Underground, but they make it their own. Very well crafted songs. The last half is a monotonous collection of unfinished songs. The meoldies found throughout the first part of the album, that sound so sweet to the ear at first, begin to sound annoying and repetitive by the end. This could have been a great great album if they finished it.

5 out of 5 stars the more I listen, the more I want to listen.......2005-09-25

Good feeling, catchy melodies and harmonies with folky, psychedelic lyrics. Lots of acoustic guitar, always a plus. But there are a lot of different instruments on this record. The sum is greater than the parts. The album sounds familiar and new at the same time. It really is a new kind of pop music.

I haven't heard either the Shins or Califone, so I'll compare Fruit Bats to the Beatles, Kinks, Velvet Underground, maybe even early, pre-ambient Brian Eno. It's great music!

4 out of 5 stars good to the last drop.......2005-09-11

shades of the shins and belle and sebastian, wrapped in college radio fresh seal packaging. i found several tracks overly forlorn, but overall quite catchy. starts and finishes very strong, with a rollercoaster ride of content, theme, and tempo throughout. GREAT ALBUM!
