5 out of 5 stars D.C. Cooper's First Royal Hunt Album.......2006-07-29

By 1996, Royal Hunt had pretty much established their keyboard-heavy melodic metal sound. They just needed one ingredient to help them reach major (for this kind of music) success. They needed a better singer. While previous vocalist Henrik Brockmann did an admirable job on the band's previous albums (Land of Broken Hearts and Clown in the Mirror), Royal Hunt needed a charismatic vocalist with more power and range.

Enter D.C. Cooper.

D.C. Cooper was exactly what Royal Hunt needed. His soaring melodic voice and charismatic stage presence helped catapult the band to major success, particularly in metal-loving Japan. His presence on the band's third album, 1996's Moving Target, was a dramatic improvement over the early Royal Hunt albums.

Musically, Moving Target is very similar to its predecessors. It is a keyboard-heavy melodic metal album that also shows some progressive metal elements. Band leader Andre Anderssen's songwriting continued to improve, and the number of "filler" tracks again decreased. Indeed, many of the tracks on Moving Target are considered the band's best.

D.C. Cooper's amazing vocal performance is what steals the show though. His power and range fit the music perfectly, and made a good album extraordinary. I still have a hard time believing it was his first ever album. I've had the good fortune of hearing D.C. live twice, and can happily confirm that his voice is just as amazing live as it is on the albums.

Moving Target is probably my favorite Royal Hunt album (unless you count the killer 2-disc live set "1996"). I know that Paradox is more progressive and has better songwriting, but for some reason the songs on this album just stick in my head a bit more. This is dynamite stuff that should please anyone into melodic hard rock and metal.

NOTE: There are a number of different versions of Moving Target. The best is the NEMS/Rock Brigade version, which features the entire 1995 Far Away live EP as bonus tracks, for a total of 15 songs.

5 out of 5 stars Powerful orchestral prog.......2006-04-23

I first heard Clown in the Mirror, and thought it was really very good. But then, I heard Fear and well, I just didn't like it, songwriting was pretty weak. But recently, I discovered this CD, Moving Target, and was very positively surprised. The singing is great, the orchestral + hard rock sound is great, very powerful instrumentally, cool drum parts, and the keyboards of course sharp and great as always.

Some of the best songs on this CD are 1348, Step by Step, and Stay Down. A lot of the already great vocals here are improved by the female background vocals, really adds a great touch to songs like 'Step by Step.'

If you listen to this album you'll sometimes feel like you're listening to classical music done with rock/metal instruments, it can really be that classical. But other times it'll be completely hard rock/metal. This album certainly provides a lot of variety, its great stuff.

If you end up liking this, check out Clown in the Mirror, also a great album by Royal Hunt.

5 out of 5 stars Proggresive art rock.......2003-11-22

Already at the very first time I listen to this record the hair on my arms rised. I almost get lost for words to describe this album. It`s almost perfect in all the way. And with Dc.Cooper powerfull and harmonic voice it can`t be done any better than this.Great synth cords, great guitar playing, powerfull and harmonic singing, load drumming with great beat, you can`t ask for more. The melodies has the right proggresive elements, not to much so you drown in it an not to less that you miss it. Thigth and energic, light, not as "dark" as the realise before Moving Target because of Dc.Coopers more harmonic voice. This masterpiece realise come out in 1992.Best songs on this album i would say: Last goodbye,1348,Far away,Step by Step and Autograph. I recommend you this album strongly, don`t miss it if you like the more synth harmonic proggresive rock in a little bit lighter sound. A superior album from this Danish group.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT SURF SOUNDS.......2005-09-19

A good mix of originals and covers from an extremely talented group. One wonders where their popularity rating would have been if they happened to be in the same era as the Ventures and the Shadows when instrumental music was at its' height in the early 60's.
"Thunder over Rincon" is an awesome track with "Moving Target" and "Molokai Cocktail" being surf instrumental delights. The covers are good but Jon Blair's originals are the best numbers on this package.
I agree with Stanley Runk's review that "Moving Target" is a great CD and also to get "Fiberglass Rocket" which is even better and is available at a more affordable price.
Hopefully they will bring out a new recording quite soon with mostly originals on it for us surf instrumental fans.

5 out of 5 stars Life After Dick Dale.......2005-03-04

Jon and The Nightriders are the real deal. For anyone interested in surf music, these guys are a must. Sure Dick Dale is great, but when you want to explore what else is out there, you probably think to yourself, "I wanna get into more surf music, but who's a really good band to get?" Well, naturally you have the classic groups of the 60s like The Challengers and The Ventures to choose from, but if you really want something to kick your ear on it's ass, check these guys out. They've been around since the late 70s, but they only have 3 cds you can find and they all come from the 90s. Moving Target is great, but it's not the easiest or cheapest one to find coz it's only available as an import most places. Get Fiberglass Rocket(which for some unknown reason isn't listed here) and tell me if that isn't about the best surf rock album you've heard. Check these guys out, you'll be happy.

      5 out of 5 stars Surf: a war cry.......2003-02-06

I first heard these fellows (in 1983--were you alive then?) in a live album which changed my guitar/life. I at that time heard a surf version of what I thought was correct on the frets: not so much Ventures as soundtrack; not so much Dick Dale as something that took the original concept beyond. Ah, here was the synthesis. "Moving Target" features these geniuses as they should be: released from constraints and slap-happy. The songs here include everything from, well, the Ventures to Dick Dale, but the stamp is original and telling--and boots strike the gluteal regions unlike they have ever done. A purchase for every rock and roll fan.

5 out of 5 stars High quality surf rock from So. California.......1999-09-23

This CD figures as one of the truly great buys I've made. If you like high energy surf guitars you'll love it. Guitars, bass, and drums are all highlighted in their place throughout the disk. The combination of both familiar and original tunes is topped off with an excellent hidden track #15. Highly recommended!

        4 out of 5 stars Royal Hunt's Best Album.......2005-11-19

Royal Hunt were formed in Denmark around 1992 by Andre Anderson, a very talented keyboardist and a native of Moscow. After two albums the original vocalist Henrik Brockman departed and American vocalist DC Cooper was brought into the band. His vocal ability was definitely a step up and it shows on this album full of great melodies and well-written songs. My favorite songs are 1348, Far Away, Step By Step, Autograph (instrumental), Stay Down, and Time. By 1999's album, Fear, DC Cooper was out of the band replaced by John West. If you are looking for a very talented band that write great music you should check out Royal Hunt.

5 out of 5 stars GRAND SOUND! LIMITED FOLLOWING?.......2003-04-06

I tend to write reviews for musical groups that seem to have limited exposure to the public. You'll never see me write a review on Backstreet Boys', 'Millennium', which currently has 366 reviews, or any similar popular albums, which if the reader doesn't know if they like a song or album after hearing it on the radio or MTV is certainly not going to use a review to decide.

My reviews are generally about worthy albums by the underrated, the unheralded, or the obscure, whose music is likely to be unheard unless purchased. This review is about one of those groups.

Danish progressive metal band, Royal Hunt is not really unheralded nor obscure but they certainly are underrated. Royal Hunt plays a melodic type of progressive metal of mostly medium to fast tempo. They have a large sometimes bombastic sound that is unique in the progressive genre. Also, not necessarily unique but certainly unusual, is the heavy use of keyboards, which together with the american singer, D.C. Cooper, gives the band a sound slightly like a progressive version of ASIA, a popular band of the 70s & 80s. D.C. Cooper subsequently left Royal Hunt after this release to pursue a solo career(his first solo release self-titled D.C. Cooper is very good). Subsequent Royal Hunt releases, also very good, have a capable replacement in John West.

Royal Hunt, while technically not superior to many of their better known contemporaries, such as Stratovarius or Symphony X, I find their music to be more, shall we say, user friendly. While I applaud the latter bands for their musicianship, Royal Hunt seems to be smoother, less jarring and the songwriting, I think, is superior and therefore easier to listen to.

I've had this CD for about two years so I may not sound as enthusiastic as if I had just gotten it two weeks ago, instead of two years ago but I assure you this is a very, very solid album. This particular release has 15 songs and they are all top shelf. My favorite song by Royal Hunt is Fear on the Fear album but the overall quality of this album is better. Outstanding songs on this album are Time, Epilogue, Last Goodbye, 1348 and all the rest.

Royal Hunt seem to have a loyal but limited following here in the states. This is a shame because, as mentioned, they are at least as good as all of their better known contemporaries such as Rhapsody, Stratovarius,Symphony X and Dream Theater.

Telling you about Royal Hunt isn't the same thing as hearing them for yourself. If you trust me, buy this album or Paradox, or Fear, or Mission, or Watchers, you won't be disappointed, or find some way to hear one of them first, then buy one of them.

Here is a list of the songs:
        1. Last Goodbye (Anderson) - 6:33
        2. 1348 (Anderson) - 4:32
        3. Makin' a Mess (Anderson) - 4:00
        4. Far Away (Anderson) - 4:58

        8. Give It Up (Anderson) - 4:01
