This is a classic. I could listen to "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood" all day long. One of the best songs ever.

5 out of 5 stars A TIMELESS DISCO CLASSIC... deserves to be rediscovered!.......2006-09-16

This was one of the best, most juicy latin-disco tracks EVER!!! DON'T LET ME BE MISUNDERSTOOD is a classic!!! That latin rhythm with that brass... and the guitars... ooohhhh so so sexy!!!

I bumped into this CD quite by accident. I never thought I'd ever see it re-released. My folks bought me the LP when I was a kid somewhere back in the 70's... and I rememeber I loved that song.

Years later, I found it in one of those Disco compilations CDs... but it was the short 3-minute version. And I always got the feeling the original track was much longer...

16 minutes, actually... split into two continuous tracks: "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood" and "Esmeralda Suite".

Musical extravaganzas like this... only in the 70's. And here it is complete! With brass, strings, everything but the kitchen sink! :P

Now... the 4th track You're My Everything is also a great ballad. One of those slow songs strictly for hot moments (It's all oh so 70's!!!).

And the 5th track is also a great disco song.

This album is such a great experience... I'm really sorry I never thought of getting it before.

Great memories!

3 out of 5 stars 60's Rock goes 70's Latin Disco.......2005-09-13

I first heard this in the 70's. There are a couple great songs: "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood" & "Esmeralda Suite" which really get you going. Of course the required cover of "Gloria" is here too. The rest is so so at best, but I can listen to the first two over and over. And by the way...I HATE DISCO!

5 out of 5 stars REAL Disco.......2005-09-09

Considered an 'underground' disco track, the title track 'Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood' and 'Esmarelda Suite' (which sigue together) with a total playing time of almost 16 minutes, just oozes class and sophistication. Boney M/Bee Gees it aint! This is REAL disco from the 70's. You won't be disappointed with adding this album to your collection. The other 3 tracks are so-so (and were never played in the clubs). However for the aforementioned tracks, the album is worth every cent. They don't make 'em like this anymore! Buy it now.

3 out of 5 stars Part GREAT, part WEAK.......2006-11-26

This review needs to be compartmentalized: 6 stars for the first track, "Children of the Sun", a genuine acid-rock CLASSIC which I totally love and which I think is one of the coolest tunes EVER. 4 stars for tracks 2-6, which are very interesting tunes that fans of progressive and psychedelic music from that time period will certainly enjoy. 2 stars for tracks 7-13 which are throw-away add-ons that bare almost no resemblence to the first six tracks. This CD could have (and should have) been a great EP.

4 out of 5 stars Misunderstood - 'Before The Dream Faded' (Cherry Red) 4 1/2 stars.......2006-07-09

Recorded in 1966,but not released until umteen years later(or so it appears).Great garage / psych piece of work from another short-lived;1963-1969, yet under appreciated band. Most impressive tracks were "Children Of The Sun","My Mind",the semi-trippy "I Can Take You To The Sun" and "Who's Been Talking".Line-up:Tony Hill(of High Tide)-guitar&vocals,Rick Brown-harmonica&vocals,Glen Ross Campbell-steel guitar,Steve Whitway-bass and Rick Moe-drums.Should appeal to fans of The Creation,Pretty Things,Chocolate Watchband,The Seeds,Count Five and The Move.An absolute should-have.

3 out of 5 stars I just have one song to rave about here. .......2005-11-27

"I can take you to the sun" is a song definitely ahead of it's time. I remember hearing it for the first time in 1994, and it is like Alice going into Wonderland, and having to go through all those doors to eat and drink the stuff she does to grow small, and get tall again. It begins with a very nice fuzzy guitar rave, and climaxes, and then you're thrown into another world of the group's underbelly when they shift gears, and go completely acoustic. Don't play at 3 in the morning...especially if you work in a nursing home like I did that summer of 94. This was actually released in the spring of 1966 shortly after The Misunderstood left San Francisco, and migrated to England. Imagine if the group stayed put, and they released this in the states. The impact it would've had, and quite possibly some notority after all 6 months later The Grateful Dead did their infamous Acid Test at UCLA. Oh well. The rest of this cd has some promise, but remember guys "I HATE HARMONICAS!!!".

5 out of 5 stars great music.......2005-08-25

i'm into the psychedelic era from the 60's because that music or genre was as a great way to explore many sounds that really changed an era!!, and right now i'm discovering so many bands that really never got justice, the misunderstood was a good band, and every time i have the chance to recomend good music to any one they're always on top of my list, also how cool is to read a review from a former member!!!! that was a nice surprise!!! It's important for rock fans in general ( especially classic rock fans) to keep discovering great bands like this one!!!! keep rockin'

5 out of 5 stars The Misunderstood: They Could Have Been A Condender.......2005-02-11

"Before the Dream Faded" may be the closest thing to the Dead Sea Scrolls for devotees of early psychedelic music and garage rock. "Before the Dream Faded" is a rare document of a marginally famous band that was at ground zero of the underground music movement. It's a shame that Amazon doesn't include "Before the Dream Faded" on their list of Essential Rock and Roll CDs. The lack of recognition the Misunderstood from rock critics with a shallow knowledge of rock and roll shows that "misunderstood" has evolved into an almost prophetic name for this great band.

The expert playing and musical finesse of the Misunderstood made the garage band label a misnomer The Misunderstood had a bluesy psychedelic sound well in front big guns of UK Sixties psychedelica, like Jimi Hendrix, Pink Floyd and even the Yardbirds. The Misunderstood's music was a Molotov cocktail mixed with equal parts raw blues and mind bending psychedelic guitar. One need only to listen to the Misunderstood to find the point of inspiration for Jeff Beck when he'd play his ear splitting, guitar shattering "rave-ups" with the Yardbirds.

Glen Ross Campbell (not the "Witchta Lineman" dude) was an expert guitarist who doubled on steel guitar. The addition of UK guitarist Tony Hill when the Misunderstood moved to London in '66 gave the band a full throttle guitar sound. Steve Whiting on bass and Rick Moe on drums provided a muscular rhythm section that gave the Misunderstood a sound as powerful as a roundhouse punch.

I was encouraged to read the review of Steve Whiting (see Spotlight Reviews) the original bass player for the Misunderstood. I'm always amazed that musicians like Steve Whiting keep the faith after getting shafted by fast buck moguls and producers who run the business end of music. Steve is absolutely right ....any recorded material by Glen Ross Campbell under the guise of the Misunderstood is inferior to by the original band. This album, "Before the Dream Faded", contains all the tracks associated with the Misunderstood's 24 karat gold legacy.

3 out of 5 stars Split down the middle as far as quality.......2005-12-10

I just got reacquainted with the Misunderstood after not hearing "I Can Take You To The Sun" for 11 years. The group is originally out of San Francisco,CA. and travelled to England after failing to make it in the San Francisco scene of the Dead, and the Airplane. Unfortunately, they still didn't make it in America, but they have a good sound anyway. The first side of this double cd is strictly blues influence as they were influenced by the Yardbirds and Animals. However, with the "Golden Glass" side it starts sounding rather respectible. Where do I stop the title cut is an animal, "Never Had A Girl" is mindtripping right up there with the Airplane, "Don't Want To Discuss It" is a rock guitar player's wet dream, and they do an awesome cover of Spencer Davis's "Keep On Running". It's definitely one of those groups who's sound benefitted them much when they took their influences and made their own sound instead of covering their influences; as I found the original material sounding 10 times better than the covers.

5 out of 5 stars BEST Unknown 60's Band of All Time!.......2004-11-19

The ORIGINATORS of psychedelic - before Hendrix, Pink Floyd, you name it. Circumstances (i.e., VietNam) prevailed against their commercial success just as they were on the cusp, but that doesn't change what they created before they were destroyed by the need to feed the killing machine. This is a transitional album, primarily showcasing their blues heritage just prior to moving to England and recording their ensuing full-scale metamorphosis into amazing creators/explorers of psychedelia. If you're into it, this is a "must-have"!

5 out of 5 stars Must Have Classic.......2000-06-12

This is some of the best work done by a classic, and practically unknown, psychedelic band. Glen Ross Campbell creates fantastic acid-drenched sounds on his steel guitar, and the rest of the band is brilliant as well. I highly recommend this to anyone interested in obscure rock bands of the sixties, and even to fans of later prog-rock. This disc is extremely hard to find, so BUY IT NOW!

This album covers a large spectrum of musical genres spanning from Baroque to Late 20th Century. I think that this album would be a valuable addition to any tubist's listening collection. Alan Baer has not only chosen excellent literature, but plays with wonderful tone and attention to detail. I am particularly fond of the transcribed flute sonata.

My daughter introduced this album to me and I have not stopped listening since that day. There is no better proof of Nina's power of expression and feeling than her version of "Ne me quitte pas". While her French pronunciation may not be "perfect" to the ears of some French-speaking listeners, it is probably one of the most profound, touching and powerful version of this classic, including the version of the composer.
All of the tracks are spellbinding.
I cannot do without this CD and have shared it with many of my friends.

5 out of 5 stars I can not live with out this cd........2002-07-02

I bought this CD a few years ago from a used CD store and became obsessed. I have several of her albums, but the mix on this disc is incomparable. I still get so moved by her versions of 'Trouble in Mind' 'Don't Explain' and 'Ne me quitte pas'- not to mention Little Girl Blue. This is a solid album, it holds the mood and your attention for the duration. I lost it last month while travelling and have been missing it something fierce.
My friends, who were initially turned off when I was listening to some of her rawer recordings, were converted after hearing this.

    5 out of 5 stars perfect.......2000-03-14

This is a smooth colection of her at her best, very emotional.

Rod Stewart has long been lambasted by critics for selling out one of rock's greatest voices. Indeed, his career prior to "Hot Legs" and "Do Ya Think I'm Sexy?" was as dizzying as it was promising, as he bounded from obscurity to front Jeff Beck's seminal post-Yardbirds quartet, then quickly segued into the revamped (Small) Faces and an initially acclaimed solo career, all in a head-snapping blur. This 18-track anthology uncovers the mostly obscure roots of Stewart's solo recording career, from the slavish, sometimes shaky 1964 covers of blues and early R&B standards cut as demos (hence their sometimes spotty sound quality) that make up the album's first half, through early, misdirected record-label efforts to turn him into a pop singer (the singles "The Day Will Come," "Shake," and "I Just Got Some," backed on the latter by Brian Auger's Trinity) to more artistically familiar and rewarding turf like the self-penned slow blues "So Much to Say," the string-inflected title track, "Come Home Baby" (a duet with Brit R&B diva P.P. Arnold, featuring an all-star session crew that includes Keith Richards and Keith Emerson) and Python Lee Jackson's 1968 "In a Broken Dream." Stewart's other two recordings with the band are also featured. The latter handful of tracks were recorded as the singer split his time between a simmering solo career and the skyrocketing fortunes of the Jeff Beck Group. While many of these tracks have been previously--and haphazardly--released, this marks their best compilation and documentation to date. --Jerry McCulley

Santa Esmeralda was a 70's Spanish-themed studio group. Santa Esmeralda first album (1977) was a reworking of the Animals classic "Don't Let Me be misunderstood." The album was an international success with Leroy Gomez vocals.

At this point Gomez left to continue his solo career, having one release on Casablanca (1978). The medley of "Gypsy Woman/Spanish Harlem" made it to the club top 40 briefly. In 1979 Gomez released "I got it bad" which was a huge success in Latin America with GET UP AND BOOGIE.

Santa Esmeralda continued recording with Jimmy Goings. The second album, 1978's "The House of the Rising Sun," was another reworking of the Animals classic. Sevilla Nights" was included on the soundtrack to "Thank God it's Friday." Beauty" was released in late 1978. In 1979 the group made a stunning comeback with Jimmy Going "Another Cha-Cha." By 1980's "Don't Be Shy Tonight" was released and had a top ten club hit with "C'est Magnifique"

The last two albums "The Green Talisman" and "Hush" (only for real fans) with not top hits.

All Santa Esmeralda's albums are available on CD at Amazon But there's no Leroy Gomez CDs.
