Customer Reviews:
The pop narcotic kicks in, if not up.......2005-08-15
Yes, as a longtime GSM fan who bought "Bwyd Time" before any of their discs appeared in the US, I too lament the loss of the witty, acid-tinted visions in favor of the pastoral narcoctic shuffle of their last few albums. But, ever since at least Gorky 5 (or even Barafundle?) the group's been progressing towards this folkier bucolic pace as they (and we their listeners) age. Euros Childs possesses one of the finest voices in music that I know, and hearing him on "Shore Light" shows how moving his mellifluous delivery can be. This album took me many listens to appreciate, and it's best suited for laziness, if not lethargy! The Beach Boy touches on such as "Leave Me Dreaming" are not as overwhelming as they are for many of GZM's post-psychedelic peers mimicking "Pet Sounds," and this is an alt-pop blessing.
The muted nature of this album slips it more towards the lullabies preceding Sleep rather than the exuberance of a Holiday. The hypnotic pace, however, fits the mood you need to come down after the high, and for this, as shown by their career trajectory (like the different music but same downwardly arced, sophisticated, but more studio-based and mellow path of their mates Super Furry Animals), after fifteen or so years at it, if they choose to rest on their laurels rather than climb the trees, then this fits their lazy, lawn-stretched, acoustic languour. I only wish, like SFA, that they'd record in Welsh once in a while, and not drift so far from their linguistic roots as they wander the soft landscapes of sound they conjure.
worth another .5 on top of that.......2004-08-04
although this is a perfectly pleasant listen, i was decidedly disappointed with it. i know a few guys who have it and love it, but that's only because they don't own the best GZM has to offer. this album is intriguing in the sense that the band has begun to stretch a bit, test their boundaries, and while most of the material is the same old welsh experimental folk-pop they've been doing for years, some of the songs reach the 7 minute mark. it just isn't quite as exciting, not quite as vibrant as the majority of their previous albums have been.
Going to the country.......2004-04-22
The Gorky's are one of the best bands ever from Wales. Their music is often genre defying and brings many musical traditions with it. They are often portrayed as this weird medieval folk band, but they have much more in common with bands like Mojave 3 or Alfie. They have done eight or nine album in ten years and have just released a greatest hits record. The first songs "Waiting For Winter" and "Happiness" are an improvement over their last record and show their growing obsessions with the weather and love songs. "Mow The Lawn" sounds like Canned Heat on crystal meth. Euros Childs is one of today's great-unknown songwriters. Richard James has had a larger role on the past few albums. Maybe this album has more influences of American country and roots rock and less prog rock instrumentals. You have to admire them for doing their own thing and not giving a f***. The Gorky's are distinct for that reason alone.
a new classic.......2003-11-21
This album follows the recent trends of the Gorkers; that is to say it leans more heavily toward beautiful melodies (sometimes with a countryesque feel), and strays ever further from the psychadelic playfullness of the earliest releases (Tatay etc). Depending on your penchant, these recent trends are either pleasant or maddening. While I might place myself in the later camp, I am absolutely in love with this album. There is not a weak song on this album--which features the made-to-be-played-live "Mow the Lawn" and one of Euros Childs' most beautiful songs, "Happiness". The songs written by Richard James are standouts as well. The band seems to have settled into a nice groove musically. After the wonderful, acoustic mini-lp "Blue Trees", the band released "How Long to Feel that Summer" which was, in my estimation, overly-produced, and somewhat lacking in substance. With "Sleep/Holiday" the band seems to have released what rightfully should have been the followup to "Blue Trees". Alternatingly haunting and beautiful, I strongly recommend this album from one of the finest bands making music today.
it's time to change.......2003-10-12
hey guys don't you remember about the old Gorky's albums? Those were good stuff. I loved Barafundle and the things they did before it and after (Gorky 5). The following works are good yes! but too much country music. I am not saying that i dont like them cos GZM are my best group but please stop it now!!!!
This album is kinda the other last two, no news about them but a few songs...
Btw buy this album after you buy the early years :)

Johhny Nicholas is a master!.......2003-11-24
Johnny Nicholas is a genius of the blues and R&B. Too bad his output, typically on small labels, is so sparse. Find "Too Many Bad Habits" on Blind Pig records as an example. He covers a variety of R&B genres here: Texas, New Orleans, hard blues, to great effect, with guest stops by Marcia Ball, Kaz Kazanoff and other stalwarts. Highly recommended.

Dawn Upshaw graces us with a template of nocturnal delights. The various musical styles range from Monteverdi to Crumb, keeping the listener from ever getting too comfortable. Her interprations of Warlock's haunting "Sleep" and Schwartner's "Black Anemones" are well- crafted and bewitching, but her usually-stellar musical sense is misguided in a disappointing "Bachianas Brasileiras No. 5" by Villa- Lobos. She sings youthfully and without vocal abandon, and the middle section is void of passion. Her lovely light voice sometimes treads dangerously on girlishness; it's most satisfying when exhibiting its full meaty radiance. Upshaw's pleasurable artistry creates a dreamy recording. --Barbara Eisner Bayer
Customer Reviews:
A good example of Upshaw's adventurous programming.......2006-08-24
Early on Dawn Upshaw carveda niche for herself on the New York music scene with daring song recitlas, often at the 92nd St. Y, that critics adored. This CD gives us a perfect example, ranging form Dowland and Monteverdi to Crumb and Schwantner. Except for the Villa-Lobos, most of the selections will be obscure for the average listener. I wish I could say the results totally delighted me. But Upshaw seems a little uninvolved here, and the theme of Morpheus, god of sleep, suggests that the tone is too consistently nocturnal. There's no denying her artistry, but this is one Upshaw recital I rarely pull out of a listen all the way through.
Better than average Upshaw recording. Entertaining.......2006-04-29
'White Moon, Songs to Morpheus' sung by Dawn Upshaw are 12 pieces written by a wide variety of composers, but all dealing with sleep. I am almost always on the fence between four and five stars with Upshaw recordings, but this one is a clear five, as the variety of both vocal range and instrumental accompanyment makes it far more interesting than her single composer essays.
This may not be the best first album for someone new to Upshaw (See 'Dawn Upsahw, Soprano), but if you like her, it should definitely be on your list.
Best Upshaw Recording.......2004-05-04
Almost as good as Upshaw live, as I saw last week in Pittsburgh. I agree also, the Schwanter is one of the most beautiful songs I've heard and she sings it beautifully with the piano. All other songs are excellent, esp. Weep ye no More...the Crumb songs are unusual but don't affect the worth of purchase.
Making Connections.......2002-03-17
Most of Dawn Upshaw's albums are so artistic in their conception, that you want to buy them regardless of what is on it. It takes true talent to "sell" Monteverdi, Schwantner, Crumb, and Purcell on the same CD! But Upshaw does with performances that are sensitive, but always in the spirit of "Songs to Morpheus." Upshaw doesn't just program her album with songs that all share the same literary theme, but she instills the idea of Morpheus, and by extension, the moon, in all the pieces--the "soother of suffering."
Handel's "Gentle Morpheus" is sung with gentle restraint, bringing out the subtle nuances so prevalent in Handel's vocal works. Upshaw has a clear understanding of early music performance and does not seek to "overinterpret" the music. Likewise, her performance of the newer pieces are equally sensitive. Although her diction is a bit obtrusive in the verse of Villa-Lobos Bachianas Brasileiras No. 5, her vocalise is so moving, particularly at the end. Her performance of the Crumb is worthy of Jan de Gaetani, and other top-notch performers of Crumb's music.
The right selections for the right voice.......2001-12-01
The theme of this music is Sleep and Dreams. The 'night setting' is reflected in a very interesting variety of songs, both old and modern. The ethereal quality of much of this music
is well suited to Upshaw's silver toned voice, which expresses the fantasy and other worldliness of the compositions without losing the idea that the human soul can find fantastic strangeness and blessed comfort in each night of its existence.
By the way, and most significantly: the music is beautiful beyond words.

Wow, No Better Than This.......2006-03-15
This stuff only sounds best LOUD. And it's amazing! I'd like to think this is the direction Sabbath should've taken in '79 but never did. If Ozzy was still was with them, I'm sure they'd develop and mature to this level. They're all much more mature musicians, so why they don't reunite is beyond me.
Stoner Cosmic Rock Sabbath flavor .......2005-05-18
Im shock!!!!!!! the sound of Black Sabbath has been duplicated in an amazing way like never before, neither Cathedral their most known Sabbath junkies achieved something like this and this four guys are not brittsh they are Canadian!!!!!! Canadians have been well known by female singer/song writters progressive bands
and pop artists, but in the field of stoner, metal and hard (with the exception of Voivod)just a few times have been capable to amaze us, Sheavy is a stuning band and im enjoying this album plenty
HM
Sheavy - 'Electric Sheep' (Music Cartel).......2004-11-13
I really like these bands, like Sheavy that make an all out effort to recapture the '70's hard rock scene with a psychedelic tone to it.Don't you?If not, stop here and go read some lame-ass review of some worthless release. With vocalist Steve Hennessey being like a Ozzy wanna-be,is probably why Sheavy remains a cult band.I've heard a couple of fellow stoner rock fans comment that this CD is like Sheavy musically breeding the 'Sabbath Bloody Sabbath' lp with Zeppelin's 4th album.I mean, how cool is that? With tracks like "Virtual Machine" and "Stardust" kicking some serious ass like they do,Sheavy lets their fans know what's vital to their music. Will appeal to fans of Spirit Caravan,Sleep,Orange Goblin and Atomic Bitchwax.
Some invent, some worship, some do both at the same time.......2004-05-24
This band is getting a bunch of crap for sounding too much like early Sabbath. The singer sounds so much like Ozzy, I can see why some people may think this band is nothing but a rip-off. But every heavy metal musician in their right mind would love to do exactly what these guys pull off, sounding like Sabbath at their best. I love all periods of Sabbath with their many line-ups and styles, but Sheavy zones into the mid-seventies and gets it right. Not an easy task to do. Now if Sabbath was still writing and recording music like this, I would understand the complaints. But after listening to the two studio throw-aways by Sabbath on the Reunion album, I think a band like this is needed. If Sabbath isn't going to sound like Sabbath, someone else should. If you like Sabbath Bloody Sabbath, then this is the band for you.
OLD SABBATH FANS BE AWARE.......2004-01-13
This cd is what all of us old Sabbath fans have been waiting for. Yes sure, its sounds like a Sabbath rip off....but god damn they do such a great job its like listening to old unheard of Sabbath tracks. I've playd in a lot of bands that play Sabbath and these guys are the next best thing....maybe even better.

Still thrashing about in the waterwheels of my mind.......2005-10-12
This is one of those albums that I loved to death 10 years ago, but had completely forgotten about since then. In fact, I can remember singing some of songs from this album on bus-trip through a foreign country (and being told to shut up by the other passengers) around that era. The name came back to me about a year ago when I saw them listed in the SF Weekly for a Halloween night gig in Potrero Hill. I ditched my friend's party to go see them and now recall that show as one of the best of 2004.
The Fall-Outs play "60's inspired garage punk", with nods to the Animals, the Kinks, the Sonics and just about anything else you might find on the Nuggets box-set. The tone of their music is a little bit on the snotty/obnoxious side (although they were actually quite gracious in person), and its all good fun. Their music has a certain restlessness to it, propelled along by some shifting tempos and jangly guitar riffs. My favorites on this album are the title track ("Sleep"), "Something's Wrong", "All The Time", and the wonderfully shambolic and caterwauling "Zombie" - not to be confused with the Cranberries' song of the same name (it actually sounds like it could've been a Dinosaur Jr. song).
I like the sense of humor that these guys have. It comes across well in the music. (I think the graveyard is her home/she's too distant and unaware...I think she's a zombie!)They're not the sort of band that's going to blow your mind with stunning pyrotechnics (musical or otherwise), but they have a certain charm that makes it all very endearing. Highly recommended for garage-rock fans.

rare gem, better than expected..........2006-06-28
While the tempo of this album lacks high points, it's a solid effort by all concerned. Several tracks are top shelf and none disappoint. To hear one of the original bluesmen incorporating electric instruments into traditional acoustic styles is unusual enough, but to hear it done effectively is nearly unique. The respect and attention Jimmy Dawkins has given to the originals brings the effort into collectible status. The authentic flavor contributed by Sleepy John Estes is a deliberate counterpoint ..
Four Stars, if you like either artist, and 5 stars if you are a collector. Unusual and worth owning!
Solid Chicago Blues.......2002-04-05
This album is of solid quality. The band members are Sleepy John Estes: vocals/ rhythm guitar, Sunnyland Slim: piano, Jimmy Dawkins: lead guitar, Odie Payne, Jr.: drums, Carey Bell: harmonica (bass on 2 tracks), Earl Hooker: bass (on 4 tracks), Joe Harper: bass (on remaining tracks).
From the line up, you will recognize many standard performers in the Chicago scene. While the performances here are good, there are no stand out performances. One could probably find many of these performers sounding more exceptional on some of their solo efforts or if not that then on a different album. Still, it's good listening and creates a good urban Blues mood througout.
The only downside is that Jimmy Dawkins' finger picking gets a little excessive and sometimes seems to cloud out the bands' groove. So in other words Mr. Dawkins could have held back a little and would have been fine just playing the fills and solos rather than the fills, solo's and chorus'.
