Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The Muse of Genuine Comedy.......2006-10-02

I am incapable of recognizing the case against Nucci and Dara's singing and not highly motivated to find out. I listen to operas, not to nuances distingishing one professional from another. In a review of the Ferro Don Pasquale, I state a preference for L'Elisir D'Amore because it is less formulaic than the 1843 opera buffa. The 1832 work is genuinely comic rather than satirical. Pavarotti has said that he particularly enjoys singing the part of Nemorino, a "simple young man," because of the contrast it offers him to the blood-and-thunder roles he is usually called on to sing. Pavarotti's voice lends itself to a "simple" part because of its down-to-earth quality. His choice not to sing German accords with the impression that he is a definitive representative of Italian culture. L'Elisir D'Amore is about as Italian as opera can get. I have never heard a better comic opera than this; and the effect is no doubt owing to the performances despite the criticisms of Nucci and Dara.

Comedy presents undistinguished characters designed to represent the basic health of society. It is antithetical to the tragic depth of Wagner's Tristan und Isolde and to the sublime mystery of Bartok's Bluebeard's Castle. Comic characters involve themselves in inconsequential troubles based on inconsequential goals, decisions and actions. No doubt Nemorino would like to prosper in love with Adina; but her capriciousness keeps her from figuring as a major erotic prize. She plants the notion of a magic potion in Nemorino's mind after reading the story of Tristan and Isolt. Heaven knows what a gulf separates L'Elisir D'Amore from Wagner's love-and-death opera! After the handsome Belcore sweeps Adina off her feet (whatever that means) by comparing her to Venus in the Judgment of Paris, the charlatan Dulcamara saves the day with his fake but psychologically effective potion. Nemorino sings, "Dear elixir! You're mine! / Yes, all mine. / How powerful your strength must be/ if, without having drunk any yet/ you fill my breast with so much joy!" Thalia, the muse of comedy, must have been proud of this one.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Music.......2006-07-17

This CD is very good, the sound quality is excellent and all the Opera is an exquisite piece of art. Even if you are not much of an Opera music lover, Donizetti is able to involve you in this world of music, drama, and romance. The performers are unique and the director did an excellent job. I would recommend this cd to anyone.

4 out of 5 stars A Recording That Will Certainly Be Trasured Favorite.......2005-11-09

Donizetti's comic L'ELISIR D'AMORE is one of opera's enduring favorites. It's a work that can be buffoonish when performed on stage, but recorded versions cut out the antics and give us Donizetti's enjoyable score. This set has so many excellent qualities going for it, it's nearly perfect. It has an all star cast, led by one of opera's greatest conductors, and includes the orchestra and chorus of one of the world's greatest opera houses. Is there any other recording worth considering? Yes and no.

Its strengths include a stellar cast led by Luciano Pavarotti and Kathleen Battle. This is not Luciano Pavarotti's first attempt at recording this work. He did so nearly twenty years earlier in a wonderful set with Joan Sutherland as Adina. While his voice is somewhat darker in this set than it was in the Sutherland set, Pavarotti is one of the best male Donizetti singers. On stage we would not believe Pavarotti is a love struck young man. If anything the cover makes him look like a dirty old man, but I find his interpretation nuanced and in many ways stronger than his earlier rendition and certainly more nuanced than some of his television forays into the work. I love Kathleen Battle's Adina. Her voice is perfect, she sings with great clarity, and each time I listen to it I realize what a loss her departure from the opera stage has been. We also get a young Dawn Upshaw as Giannetta in one of her few complete opera recordings. James Levine is, well James Levine which means the orchestra is in top form as is the Metropolitan Opera Chorus.

The only criticism leveled against this recording by many and I would tend to agree would be the lower range male voices of Leo Nucci and Enzo Dara as Belcore and Dulcamara respectively. I will not say they are the reason to avoid buying this set as some reviewers have said, and I don't find them so horrible that I'd avoid it. The problem is that some of the great recordings of this work have basses and baritones that give the work a personality. Often times the lower roles were written with comedic intentions, and the basses and baritones often became comic figures and took liberties with the score. In comparison the interpretations of Nucci and Dara are rather dull, but Pavarotti, Battle, and Upshaw carry the recording and their strengths cover the weaknesses of this set.

I'm not sure this is the recording of the ages. The earlier Sutherland Pavarotti collaboration would probably earn this title. My favorite is the first LP set I owned with Rosanna Cartieri as Adina under the direction of Tulio Serafin. Now before I sound too pretentious, I will admit I purchased it not because of its quality and my great taste. It was a budget recording for about six dollars and I was a broke high school student who just discovered opera and wanted as many sets as I could afford. Still, I love the Pavarotti-Battle set, have had many hours of listening pleasure from it, and highly recommend it.

3 out of 5 stars Nucci and Dara are awful; otherwise, a great recording!.......2003-07-22

First of all, Pavarotti is fantastic here, much better than on the Decca Sutherland/Bonyage recording. Although a lot of the color has been drained from his voice (he was in his mid-to-late fifties during this recording), he still sounds wonderful, and the famous Pavarotti sound with all its beauty, ping, humor and charm are still there. And he still hits the high C at the end of the Belcore/Nemorino duet! Second, Battle is also wonderful, and her high notes are fantastic (although, towards the end of her big duet with Nemorino, she barely hits the high C). Her diction is also a little rusty (hearing her next to Pavarotti is one extra contribution to what makes him such a wonderful singer), but she still sounds great in this recording. Finally, Levine and the Metropolitan orchestra and chorus are great, and offer lots of humor and excitement as well as a well - shaped performance. All the supporting roles (including Dawn Upshaw as Gianetta) are very well done. DG's recorded sound is excellent.

So - why is this a 3 star recording and not 5 stars? two reasons: Leo Nucci as Belcore and Enzo Dara as Duclamara. Nucci barks and shouts all his voice out, his performance is driven and humorless, and his intonation is just horrible. For those of you with perfect pitch (like myself), you will be very unhappy with his performance. Enzo Dara is really a bad singer. Why is he in this recording? His intonation is also bad (but not as bad as Nucci's), and he cracks on almost every high note he sings (including the "Excellente!" in the Nemorino/Duclamara duet, plus more). His singing is boring also, including in the Barcarolle duet with Adina ("Io son ricco e tu sai bella), and the other duet with Adina ("Quanto amore!"), and the way he presents the elixir to the village people is pathetic.

but if you ignore Nucci and Dara, skip their solo scenes and duets, or simply don't listen to them, then this is really a fantastic recording, and you SHOULD buy it. however, it's really a shame that they couldn't get better singers to play Belcore and Duclamara, perhaps Juan Pons as Belcore and Bryn Terfel as Duclamara. then this would be a 5-star recording, not a 3-star recording as it is now with Nucci and Dara doing their parts.

overall, get this recording for Battle, Dawn Upshaw (as Gianetta) Levine and the Met orchestra and chorus, but mostly for Pavarotti himself. this is one of his best recordings.

4 out of 5 stars The Best L'Elisir featuring pavarotti.......2003-07-12

There are a lot of positivs about this recording, however there are a few annoying things which keep me from giving this version of L'Elisir five stars.

First for the positives. The cast is wonderful and mostly in good form. For his part Pavarotti is a wonderful Nemorino. He is very involved during this performance, and delivers a wonderful combination of fun and sorrow which captures Nemorino to a tee. You can truly feal that he was having fun during this performance. Kathleen battle delivers a stron performance but one which is sub par for someone of her considerable tallents.
Leo Nucci is simply fantastic. He is truly the embodyment of the arrogant Belcore, and his voice is in excellent form here.
Lastly Enzo Dara delivers a solid performance as the excentric doctor Dulcamarra. There are better performances out there(See the Gheorghiu-Alagna set)but Dara does a good job with this difficult role.

The second major positive about the recording is the Orchestra and Conducting. Levine generall has a good sense for the pacing of a piece, as well as the talent with which he is working. This skill is on full display here. Levine moves the opera along at a brisk pace, yet one that does not force the singers to fight to catch up with the orchestra. In addition the orchestra does not drown out the performers(as is so often the case).

Now for the negatives: The production work here is not perfect. At one point in the first act you can hear someone coughing, as well as there is the occasional page turning which I assume is from the orchestra. These things are not constant, but they are annoying and show a lack of attention to detail on the part of the production team. The second weakness is actually related to Battle. She never hits any of the high notes built into this opera. One such case is at the end of the first trio in act one. I don't quite understand why she does this, she is certainly more then capable of comfortably reaching a high D or E.This is truly dissapointing. Lastly Enzo darra at times struggles whith the Dulcamara role. At one point his voice even cracks during his first duet with Nemorino. Grant it this role is very demanding, but again a dissapointment.

Whith all that said, this is a fine recording of a wonderful opera, and a solid 4 star selection.

5 out of 5 stars The picture.......2006-12-11

I haven't purchased the CD but the picture of the inside of a church on the cover is not of a British church, like one would assume since it says its a recording of British choirs. This picture is of Notre Dame Basilica in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Just thought i'd let you know. I'll be honest; I'm one to judge things by it's cover and if the company took such care to choose a 'British' church for their British choir CD, I'm willing to bet the music is equally well selected... I'm being sarcastic. But I gave the product 5 stars because I didn't want to hurt its ratings just because i'm cynical. But check out the church if you're ever in Montreal, it's truly beautiful... here I'm not being sarcastic.

3 out of 5 stars These are not the same arrangements as the original movie soundtracks.......2007-01-21

I was disappointed that these are not the same arrangements as the original movie soundtracks. For example, in Colonel Bogey, the countermarch from the movie soundtrack is not included in the arrangement on this CD. Don't get me wrong, the songs are good, but I would have preferred the same arrangements as the original movies.

5 out of 5 stars An outstanding compilation.......2006-08-25

This compilation is superb and a real must-buy. From Band of Brothers to A Bridge Too Far: every war movie theme is represented here. An all time classic.

3 out of 5 stars The really good ones are missing........2005-07-18

While this compilation has some masterpieces such as the theme from The Great Escape and Is Paris Burning, it's missing some of the finest tracts ever written. Where is the theme from Victory and Ernest Gold's stirring epic from Cross of Iron? The closing theme from Inchon was also a feast for the ears, but it's not here. It was written by Jerry Goldsmith, one of the foremost soundtrack composers of our time. Instead we're subjected to the likes of Hanover Street and The English Patient. I'll admit Inchon and Victory weren't Academy Award winning movies, but their soundtracks were second to none. As John Stossel would say," Give me a break"!!!

5 out of 5 stars "many were winners by the Academy for best scores".......2004-05-26

The lineup of composers is a Who's Who in the world of film music ~ John Addison, Tomaso Albinoni, Kenneth J. Alford, Paul Anka, John Barry, Arnold Bax, Elmer Bernstein, Eric Coates, Carl Davis, Klaus Doldinger, Antonin Dvorak, Benjamin Frankel, Gerald Fried, Hugo Friedhofer, Jerry Goldsmith, Ron Goodwin, Bernard Herrmann, Maurice Jarre, Michael Kamen, Jerome Moross, Alfred Newman, Clifton Parker, Alan Rawsthorne, Ryvichi Sakamoto, Lalo Schifrin, Gerard Schurmann, David Shire, Max Steiner, Dimitri Tiomkin, Ralph Vaughan Williams, John Williams, Gabriel Yared and Hans Zimmer ~ set the stage for compositional human drama while exploring the deepest troves of musical emotion ~ one masterpiece after another, each cue manages to display both a convincing authenticity of the times and places ~ experience every tracks passion and skill for striking the exotic orchestral colors, explosive power and spectacular works of full large scale orchestral arrangements previal at every turn.

Right now, there are four official English-language versions of Les Miserables: the Original London Cast Recording, the Original Broadway Cast Recording, the Complete Symphonic Recording, and the 10th Anniversary Concert Recording. Les Mis' addicts are best served by purchasing all recordings, as they showcase different stages (as in the OLC and the OBC) of the development of this mega-musical, as well as the interesting variations in presentation and performances by the different casts and orchestras.

If you're the average musical-theater listener who can't afford to buy all available English-language recordings, however, my advice would be to get the CSR (due to the fact that it's "complete") and the TAC recording (due to the fact that performer- and performance-wise, it's leaps and bounds better than all of the other recordings). You deserve no less.

    5 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2005-07-03

I can't believe all the negative comments about Gary Morris. He is so much better in the role than Colm Wilkinson. I've seen Gary perform the part three times and there is NO better Jean ValJean (seen the play 14 times). It's an international cast and some of the accents do take time getting used to. But the power of the music supercedes it all. Listen with your heart people. It's so incredible.

3 out of 5 stars Bought it used - thank God!.......2005-06-17

"Les Miserables" is a marvelous musical; a stunningly faithful interpretation of Victor Hugo's masterpiece, with an inspiring storyline and unforgettable characters. There are 2 reasons for buying a Les Mis CD - (1) you've seen a performance and want ONE CD to remind you of it or (2) you've become a les Mis junkie (like me) and want multiple versions so you too can hold forth on the rival merits of Andy Warlow vs Michael Maguire, Patty LuPone vs Ruthie Henshaw, Frances Ruffelle vs Kaho Shimada vs Lea Solonga. If you are in the first category, you really want the Tenth Anniversary Concert. The TAC has the complete storyline (albeit slightly abridged), it was recorded live (so there's an unique intensity and chemistry between performers), and from top to bottom it has by far the best cast.

However, if you're a serious Les Mis fan, you should buy this CD (in addition), simply because it does have the complete score. (The trouble with THAT is that it includes practically the only misstep in the whole script - if Jean Valjean has his number branded on his chest, then how is it credible that someone else will be convicted in his place?) I bought it for that reason and to hear other interpretations of the roles (in particular Andy Warlow's). I have all 4 versions, and they have all have their pluses and minuses, but frankly, I'm glad I didn't pay full price for this one. This version has a rather weak cast in general, but that does add to the fun arguing about it. On the plus side, it has Philip Quast ( THE BEST Javert, but he's even better on the TAC), Michael Ball (THE BEST Marius, also on the OLC and TAC versions), and Andy Warlow (a stirring Enjorlas for sure, but not THAT much better than Michael Maguire on the OBC and TAC). The scenes at the barricade are the best part of the CD. Kaho Shimada is an uneven Eponine, OK sometimes, less so at others. Debbie Byrne (Fantine) is OK, but I don't find her as moving as Patty LuPone (OLC) or Ruthie Henshaw (TAC). Tracy Shayne (Cosette) is irratating, not nearly as sweet as Judy Kuhn (OLB and TAC) or even Rebecca Caine (OLC). I find Barry James and especially Gay Soper (M. and Mme. Thenardier) grating as well.

I really miss Colm Wilkinson (OLC, OBC and TAC). OK, he has a unique singing style, but such heart. Not always perfect, but so powerful and emotional. All his solos and "Confrontation" just stop me dead in my tracks. The sweetness and purity of his "Bring Him Home" and "Epilogue" move me to tears. But really, there must be someone else who can do at least an adequate job or the show wouldn't have run so long in so many venues. I am willing to listen to another interpretation, but not this one. This is the central role in the play, it really can't survive without a good performance here. Gary Morris is horrible as Jean Valjean, cringe-provoking at times, merely weak at others. He's totally overmatched by Quast in "Confrontation" and by everyone in "One Day More" and "Epilogue". I haven't tried the recommendation of one reviewer of listening while squinting and shaking my head hard, but I don't see how that will help. Morris's "What have I done?", "Bring Him Home" and "Valjean's Confession" make me cover my ears or send me running for the fast forward button, although "Who am I?" isn't so bad. (I just tried the head shaking trick, it didn't help.)

    5 out of 5 stars magnificent!.......2005-06-15

Ok, I admit it. I have long been a fan of musicals, but I was only exposed to Les Mis a few months ago. My roommate loaned me this recording, and I fell in love. I played nothing but this soundtrack for the next several weeks.

As this is the only recording I've heard fully, I cannot give any comparisons between the performers here and those on other versions, but I do wish to give my general impression of the cast.

*Gary Morris (Valjean) - he has a strong, clear voice with which it is hard to find fault. He sings with emotion and passion, and I cannot imagine ever tiring of hearing him as Jean Valjean. If I had to give a complaint, it would be that I could imagine a voice with a little more distinct character...something a little riskier for the part of someone so complex.

*Philip Quast (Javert) - wow, I love deep voices, and his is so rich! I love when he hits the low note near the beginning of "Confrontation" ...I've seriously replayed that part over and over again just because it sends shivers through me...haha, I think you get the idea. This guy is good.

*Debbie Byrne (Fantine) - her voice took some getting used to because at first it seemed to me a little uncontrolled, almost like she could capture the fullness of the sound but not quite hit the notes. However, the more I listen to her, the more I enjoy her. Her voice has a wonderful texture, something you totally miss when listening to the super-clear, trilling sopranos that seem to be found all over most other musicals.

*Kaho Shimada (Eponine) - her voice took a little getting used to as well. I was a little confused until I realized she was Japanese, for though I wouldn't say you hear an accent, her voice does have a very different quality to it. Still, I enjoyed her performance very much. Her voice is trembling with emotion the entire time, almost like she can hardly control it...it is quite moving.

*Tracy Shayne (Cosette) - wow. I'm sorry, is Cosette supposed to be this shrill? Turn it off! While I'm impressed at some of the notes she hits, I don't think it's supposed to make you want to cover your ears.

*Michael Ball (Marius) -Ball makes Marius, a rather annoying character if you ask me, into someone actually likable, if not lovable. He's passionate and romantic, but not vapid. Probably my favorite vocal performance.

*Gay Soper and Barry James (the Thernardiers) - their voices are rather grating, but that's the point, right? Very entertaining performances...particularly in "Master of the House" (which, it's true, somehow manages to be stuck in your head all day).

*Anthony Warlow (Enjorolas) - very appropriate voice...manly and vibrant. If he doesn't make you want to go out and fight, then there's no help for you!

Overall, the performances were wonderful. I highly recommend this CD. A great recording of a great musical!

    4 out of 5 stars Mixed Feelings.......2005-04-20

I bought this recently, and it was an object lesson in why I ought to research an item before purchasing it.

For me, it's truly a toss-up as to whether this is a recording worth purchasing. The main benefit-a far from insignificant one-is that it is a complete recording full of much more materiel than can be found on the London or Broadway cast recordings. Basically, I was far from satisfied. The liner notes are error ridden, and the casting was not as good as possible. Gary Morris struck me as too young for the part, and Gay Soper (Mme. Thenardier) has a voice akin to the sound of fingernails on a chalkboard. But, in the absence of a complete Broadway recording, this still may be the best version available to buy. Be sure, however, to supplement it with another version. (The Tenth Anniversary recording might be the best.)

5 out of 5 stars Fine orchestral music for wartime movies.......2002-04-06

We know Vaughan Williams for his film score to "Scott of the Antarctic" which became his 7th symphony. In Vaughan Williams, we had a great maker of film music. He scored 11 films - sometimes with the helping hand of Muir Mathieson, among others. I wonder how some classic sci-fi movies from the 1960's to present-day would have sounded like under his gifted musical direction . . .

An interesting thing to mention is the admiration Bernard Herrmann, "one of the most influential film composers of all time," had for British composers like Elgar and Vaughan Williams, among others. In regards to film music, i don't know if one had an influence on the other, but it is quite significant that Herrmann enjoyed the music of Vaughan Williams : As he declared in an article for the Musical Times, "in reading the warm and affectionate tributes paid to the late Vaughan Williams by his many friends, I began to think about the personal enrichment that his great art had brought to my musical life [...]." In the United States, Herrmann conducted some works by the eminent Englishman - notably the London Symphony (Symphony No.2) and the Oboe Concerto.

Most of the tracks here were composed in the 1940's and early 50's. The record includes the fascinating Prelude to "49th Parallel", as well as solemn and atmospheric music from "The Story of a Flemish Farm". In the same vein, "Coastal Command", a wartime epic, reveals some of the best aspects of the British composer : Tension and disquietude are sustained, along with very enjoyable music ("Dawn Patrol" and "U-boats" are highlights here). In the "Three Portraits" - also finely recorded by Previn on RCA - we recognize a typical "mood" that belongs to this most amazing composer. I enjoyed "Poet", in particular, for its sheer beauty.

The numbers are appropriately well-rendered by conductor Andrew Penny and RTE ; they reproduce faithfully the Vaughan Williams "signature" sound. It's undeniable that we have here a most interesting soundtrack music disc. The dark and, sometimes, heavy atmosphere of those vintage films is really what you hear on this cd (of course, the dominant theme is war). Though Rumon Gamba (Chandos) provides excellent renditions, i still favor Andrew Penny for his fine delineation in "Coastal Command". V W was convincing in his film music writing and certainly proves a delightful illustration of the fusion of two art forms. *****

5 out of 5 stars Worth the price.......2005-07-08

Call To Arms is a great song and anyobdy who has WOTW will know this. On to the two new songs. Dawn Of Battle is a fast burner similar to Fight Until We Die and House Of Death and has a nice middle break section, its worth the price alone. THen theres I Believe, this song is kick ass. Its a ballad type song but not in a stupid way and to tell you the truth the fight, die, truth, power type lyrics have never sounded better than ion these two songs. They fit perfectly and both songs are very well written. Both songs are excellent plus you get a great opener from their last album, pick it up, the new songs are great and will have to hitting repeat many times.

5 out of 5 stars hail the four kings.......2004-12-28

This single contains three songs. Call to Arms is a very good Manowar song, but this is exactly the same version as was on the last album. I Believe is a good Manowar song but not good enough to justify recording as a single. But Dawn of Battle is a great Manowar song, and there is nothing better than a great Manowar song. Nothing. Not just nothing in the world of popular music, but nothing, period. Neither love nor sex, neither heaven nor hell, neither science nor religion, and not even ice cream is better than Manowar at their best. Nothing in either the material or spiritual universes is better than a great Manowar song. And Dawn of Battle is a great Manowar song. Therefore, you must value this single as you would value your life. If you do not possess it you are impoverished and I sincerely pity you.

4 out of 5 stars Real slick, Joey............2004-01-02

Good stuff, but why weren't these songs on the full-length CD "Warriors of the World," instead of some of the crap they stuck on there??! At this late stage in their career, Manowar is all about MARKETING, and sticking 3 songs on a separate EP allows them to milk a few more bucks out of their fans (along with the gobs of logo merchandise at their website).

5 out of 5 stars I was taken by surprise! A great treat!.......2003-10-15

When I was strumming through CD's at a local CD store, my borther pointed this CD out to me called The Dawn Of Battle. He knew that I loved Manowar and that I owned all of their CD's, but he didn't recognize the cover. Neither did I! How did I miss the release of this! I first thought that it was a single to their new album coming out, but when I looked at the year on the CD, it said 2002, so it couldn't be that. I was confused? I bought it because it had two songs I had never heard. I was really pleased with this CD. The two new songs The Dawn Of Battle and I Believe are great! The Dawn Of Battle is much like the song Warriors of the World United, only but faster. I can't believe I didn't know about this CD. This is not a single to a new album coming out. It is just a really short E.P. I wonder why Manowar released this. Manybe just wanted to help feed the hunger of Manowar fans until they finally get around to getting a new album recorded. This little E.P. will tide me over, but I can't wait. If the songs sound like this, it will be great!

3 out of 5 stars Good idea for a single.......2003-01-21

Manowar quickly followed their 2002 opus Warriors of the World with this single, which features two brand new tracks. The Dawn of Battle is a fast stormer in the style of "Fight until we die" and "I Believe" is a very heavy doomy ballad. Is it worth the dough to buy this (sorta) ep as well? One can download it all! ...but also this cd is full of extras, including teasers for their upcoming dvds. That said, the two new songs are not as fresh sounding as the ones on the full length, and one might be dissapointed in the cliched lyrical choices in the new tracks. Buy only if you're a hardcore fan.

3 out of 5 stars Good CD with some hard to find works.......1999-04-25

The real highlight of this CD is Coastal Command by Vaughan Williams, which was written as the score for a WWII propaganda film. While this composition is not at the same level as English Folk Song Suite or Holst's two Suites for Military Band, it is still Vaughan Williams and fairly interesting. The two pieces by Walton (composer of Crown Imperial) are also interesting. The march from the Josephs piece is entertaining as well. Not a "core-collection" type of CD, but a CD to have if you particulary like British military bands.
