3 out of 5 stars Not Bad, Not Great.......2006-04-13

A passable collection of covers; some are excellent, a few totally mutilate the originals, and the remainder are mediocre imitations of Elliott.

To be honest, I've heard work that's as good or better from unsigned artists. If your interested, you can find Elliott covers aplenty here

5 out of 5 stars funky and beautiful tribute to the late and dear Elliott.......2006-03-28

Wonderful compilation that makes me feel closer to Eliott Smith's angst, pain and joy.

5 out of 5 stars i still miss Elliott..........2006-03-01

this cd makes me miss Elliott - we lost him too soon. I like this cd very much but it is still sad to know that he is gone. this seems to be a heartfelt tribute and I don't understand how anyone could fault it. it makes me question their motivation to fault a sincere tribute from a small indie label when this tribute benefits the Elliott Smith foundation.

1 out of 5 stars Well, they had good intentions.......2006-02-27

Maybe if they had chosen bands with more character that would cover an Elliott Smith song with a little flavor this cd would have been better. I listened to It 3 times all the way through just to make sure I wasnt missing something, and I wanst. Nothing worth hearing here. at least they had good intentions.

4 out of 5 stars From Portland with love.......2006-02-16

Tribute albums tend to fail their intended audience time and again, mainly because the audience they target are purist fans of the original work. More often than not, these fans view any reworking of the material as a form of sacrilege. Sadly, this is already the case for what is in reality, an outstanding tribute to Elliott Smith, "To:Elliott/From:Portland." Reading the message boards on various Smith fan sites, it doesn't take long to see that this release is loathed by his fan base. The crux of their collective wrath seems to be aimed at the non-sparse production, the reverse of which was a Smith trademark. Unfortunately, they are missing the real worth of this CD - that he was a remarkable songwriter, and given that fact, even relatively unknown artists (all of the bands on this disc are from his hometown of Portland) have a hard time sounding bad when given such a great song to work with. The CD kicks off with the best known band of the bunch, The Decemberists, and their cover of Clementine, and it's performed
almost as sparse as Elliott's original - acoustic guitar, harmonica, and the sound of a crackling fire in the background. The fire is a great effect - and reminds me how few of today's songs would actually sound so good at night in the woods with the smell of burning brush and branch permeating the air. From there, the production gets more lavish as each of the artists takes on the task of honoring his work. In spite of this, these artists do a fantastic job with Smith's material - and for people who were not a part of the near lunatic fanaticism that made up Smith's fan base while he was alive, I think they will be drawn even closer to his original work. Much like one of Elliott's biggest inspirations, The Beatles, a great song still sounds like a great song - even if performed by a guy at the corner pub. Unless you live in Portland, you won't know many (if any) of these artists, with the exception of the Decemberists and Eric Matthews - but please don't let that stop you from discovering this fine CD.
You'll thank yourself later for owning it.

5 out of 5 stars rarely heard music.......2007-01-07

Good on you Bostridge! These BRitten songs are fabulous - didn't even know that some of them even existed! JOhnson's playing makes for a perfect duo with Bostridge's intelligent interpretations of these brilliant songs.

5 out of 5 stars A voice teacher and early music fan.......2006-02-07

Oh Hearken all ye true lovers of GOOD MUSIC for this album presents some of the most profoundly beautiful songs you will ever hear anywhere!!!It would be worthwhile even if you only enjoyed the first 3 songs on the disc: the 3 Realizations from Harmonia Sacra which are 'Lord! I have sinned','Hymn to God the Father' by Pelham Humfreys and 'A Hymn on Divine Music' (which is absolutely so meaningful to us who love the art of music) by William Croft all arranged by Britten for tenor and harp. And all sung by one of the most exquisitely beautiful tenor voices ever to come out of the UK; flawless diction, resonant and vibrant tone quality and highly emotional portraying every little nuance in the song.
I bought this album because the music of Britten has always intrigued me and I was not disappointed in the variety of songs included on this album. The nine Holy Sonnets of John Donne are profound religious meditations, all of which are concerned with death and repentance. The songs 'Evening','Morning', and 'Night', are taken from the incidental music for Ronald Duncan's Masque 'This Way to the Tomb'.There are songs with settings of W.H. Auden, and several other writers too numerous to mention, but suffice it to say that there is sufficient variety to keep all listeners interested throughout the disc. Some of the songs I found particularly interesting are:'The Red Cockatoo',Waley-'A Poison Tree',Blake-'Cradle Song for Eleanor',MacNeice-and 'Death be not Proud'. When you have an Ian Bostridge available there is no need to look for anyone else. He has all the vocal skills and nuances to sing each song as an island in itself; simply marvelous interpretations, and he is fortunate to have Graham Johnson to accompany him.

3 out of 5 stars Good, but could be much better..........2004-11-02

While I do like some of what Bostridge does, his recorded performances to me seem to be filled more and more with musical gimmicks. His tone I find refreshing from so many English tenors who sound like they are in pain while singing, but Brostridge truly does lack a good legato line and he often uses a horrible strident quality for emphisis of text.

Peter Pears' recordings of many of these songs are still in many ways the difinitive performances, but I do like to hear other voices sing this repertoire and unfortunately very few options are out there. So, kudos to Bostridge for recording these songs, but lets not crown him THE new Britten singer of our time.

5 out of 5 stars THE English Singer sings music by THE English Songwriter.......2000-02-29

This CD lets us know that not only was Britten the greatest of English composers since Purcell, but he is an absolute master at songwriting. His economic style is perfect for songs, his choice of text is truly sophisticated and his idiomatic writing for both piano and voice put the listener always on the edge of his or her seat. Bostridge's light but powerful voice suits these songs perfectly. And Graham Johnson's piano playing is unsurpassable. One of my favorite CDs!

3 out of 5 stars Not my Sandy Denny.......2007-01-11

If you are a fan of the whole range of Sandy Denny's work and like English interpretations of the blues, then this collection is for you. However, if you're expecting those folk tunes (both traditional and contemporary) sung in Sandy Denny's absolutely splendid voice, then you will be grievously disappointed (as I was). I had hoped that this collection would yield some pleasant surprises, even though her sadly shortened output is familiar to anyone who has listened to her music over the past three-and-a-half decades. I respect her willingness to explore different realms of musical experience, but other than the first few Fotheringay tunes and the familiar refrain of the "Quiet Joys of Brotherhood" I was hard put to sit quietly and listen to the music. The vocal inflection and phrasing of the bluesy tunes, as well as her sometimes self-conscious use of caesura and rhythmic variation, were almost painful to hear. I recommend the 3-CD set of "Who Knows Where the Time Goes?" for anyone unfamiliar with Denny's work and ready to experience one of the most unique voices in the history of folk rock.

5 out of 5 stars 21st Century Mix Tape of Some of Denny's Finest.......2005-01-07

Especially popular in England, the 'mix tape' CD is proliferating everywhere. These cd's, often a freebie with a magazine, are a personalized mix of new music (Tracks Magazine, Word Magazine), themed music (MOJO, Q from England) or, in this case, some of Sandy Denny's most moving interpretive work.

If you are new to Denny, go to Leif and Liege/Fairport Convention, or to the No More Sad Refrains Anthology. This Collection is for obsessive fans, like myself, who get a kick out of another fan's mix of her work.

4 out of 5 stars Sometimes you get what you wish for........2005-03-29

Sometimes it's frustrating be a music lover who is gay. You're expected to dig the club culture that produces such drab music and makes an icon out of Gwen Stefani and her crappy solo CD. Secretly, in your disc collection, you're listening to everything BUT dance albums, and the entire library of Luka Bloom rests comfortably next to the Blue Oyster Cult. Every so often, you really wish that a certain song was a little less straight and a little more twisted.

Mark Weigle understands this. Although you won't find any B.O.C. covers here, 14 of "Different and The Same's" 15 tracks are from other artists and are given a serious queer bent. Everyone from Trisha Yearwood ("What I Like About You") to Tommy Tutone get twiddles from Weigle's country folk sensibilities. A few of the songs here make perfect sense in this format, like Rosanne Cash's "The Truth About You," which becomes more about the struggle with the closet than the secreting of an affair. Of equal note is Pete Townsend's "And I Moved," which is suddenly transformed into a song about a slow, burning, longing and the encounter that the longing leads up to.

There are also a couple of fun moments here. Retooling the Jackson 5's "ABC" into "AZT" is good for a couple of chuckles. Better still is a radio worthy rip through Tommy Tutone's "867-5309/Jimmy" (originally Jenny). After all, the number on the men's room wall was more likely written there by a man, no? It's this kind of spin that makes Weigle and "Different and The Same" such a treat. He's also a delight live, and worth catching if he's playing a pride-fest in your town. With any luck, his well honed musical skills will help him get heard in a broader context.

4 out of 5 stars Lana's best (unfortunately... read below).......2005-01-12

This is without shadow of a doubt (at least in my mind) Lana's best work - why? simply 'cause for all Lana's wonderful vocal skills coming up with 10-12 attention-grabbing songs for an album was never something she and Erik could really do. Most I can count as good ones was 3-4 per album - "Love Is An Illusion" comes to mind here as an example of an album where most of the hits are her own not covers as on some of the other records. Anyways...hmm..what was I talking about? Oh yeah! back to this record - here she doesn't have to worry about writing ten good songs since other guys have taken care of that. Her versions of Stargazer, Kashmir, Still Loving You, Weep In Silence are great showcases for her stunning voice; almost all the songs here are highly listenable and enjoyable. Cannot give it a five since it's a covers compilation... also couple of numbers are close to mediocre but that's just my own picky self always trying to find some imperfection.
