Good historical overview, but a mixed bag at best.......2006-08-23
The problem with putting together the best of Black Widow is that it covers a lot of diverse musical territory, a collection that can leave a listener unfamiliar with them scratching his head. Black Widow had some really good ideas, but little of it coalesced into a clear picture of what they intended to become, if they ever did. Nonetheless, Anthology is an interesting portrait/collage of a band that was never afraid to try something different (wrap your head around Mary Clark if you can). The demo versions of songs from Sacrifice, the most consistent album in their catalog, also illustrate that quite well as there are marked differences betweeen how they began and the final versions. Hearing the first cuts is a treat even if the finished products are superior in both quality and arrangement.

Customer Reviews:
Black Widow - 'Come To The Sabbat-Anthology' (Castle).......2004-07-11
This was the very first listen I've had of Black Widow. After checking out this 29-track two disc import release,I can honestly see why this band had a decent following in their initial run from 1969-73.'Come To The...' is a retrospect of the group's five lp's along with several unreleased cuts.Over all sound seems to have traces of King Crimson,Uriah Heep,ELP and some Tull-like flute work intact.Vocalist Kep Trever's work appears to really peak in several places, especially on disc two.Tracks that I enjoyed the most are "In Ancient Days","Sacrifice","I Wish You Would"(you might remember the Yardbirds covering this tune),"Wait Until Tomorrow","Floating"(maybe the best tune here)and the 1969 version of "Come To The Sabbat".Best described as progressive gloom rock&roll.Check it out.
