5 out of 5 stars When I listen to Swing out Sister.......2007-02-22

I get the sensation of the wind in my hair as I downshift my powder-blue Jaguar convert climbing the British country hillsides. A mini-skirted mod girl to my left smiles underneath her Jackie-O sunglasses. Driving up, I take a space between an Austin Healey and a group of pastel Vespa scooters. At the party in the most elegantly understated of villas is a very black haired debonaire Sean Connery charming none other than Anne Margaret. I spy Emma Peel in her catsuit, and Andy Warhol drinking in the scene and his Madeira. Barbara Feldon is laughing over her cocktail and Hors d'oeuvres at Sid Caesar's antics. Sunshine glints across the pool, and everyone turns as Corinne Drewery clears her throat and Andy Connell gives her her pitch...

I gave in to Amazon's insistance that people who liked Basia also like Swing out Sister. OK, but there are big differences. Give any student of progressive jazz any recording of Basia with Matt Bianco and they will be blown away. The chord progressions, rythmn, and sophistication of the music is a delight. Matt Bianco is a musician's musician.

Swing out Sister is studio music. The synth stuff doesn't work well on a good system. You Ipod lovers won't notice. No wonder their live stuff sounds thin. They overtrack, overdub, and synthesize their way to a very big sound. It actually sounds close to real in the Where our Love Grows release, but in the tracks from the 80s, it is glaringly artificial. But then, I have a 10k high definition stereo. Never mind.

That said, I love this music. It is danceable, uplifting and addictive. I'll take Corinne's voice over Basia--more pleasant. It takes a certain taste. If you like the samples buy and you'll feel like you've made a great discovery, and you have.

4 out of 5 stars Where's Waiting Game?.......2006-11-21

How can they release a Best of without including 'Waiting Game'?!! Some of these records companies suck. I'm glad illegal downloading is eating away at their profits, especially when they make such glaring omissions. Karma's a biatch, ain't it?

5 out of 5 stars A must have !.......2002-12-01

This band had its great breakthrough with the stellar "breakout", from the impossible to equal (for them at least) "It's better to travel". That album was played everywhere in Madrid when it was released, and I even had a neighbour who had it playing constantly. She had the cd at home and the tape version for her car (at that time, there were few cd players for cars and no MDs).

Well, many years have gone by and I had been thinking about getting that album on cd for myself, after having worn out my tape copy. Then, I decided to get this one. I found it to be a real collection of their finest moments. The journey takes you from 1985 to 1994, and contains several (slightly edited) tracks of their most famous tunes from their stellar album. There is a clear change of style midway through this album, mainly due to line-up changes of the band throughout the years. However, I must say I was not disappointed by those tracks I had never heard before, except for track 16, an ear breaker. For instance, you have a very soul Curtis Mayfield / Marvin Gaye type of atmosphere on track 12. Track 13 has that happy feeling and rythm that makes you want to tap your feet on the floor. Track 14, a mid tempo with a jazzy touch, could be played in any of those elegant bars in major capitals around the world. The closer, a brilliant 3 minute instrumental, has a sort of romantic Parisian-like atmosphere that also brings back special memories to me...

If you like British-like pop soul with "elegant" touches, unfortunately unfit for the US market, this is an album for you. The Japanese apparently love this band. Swing Out sister might make you think a bit about Matt Bianco (same era) or Working Week, or even Nick Heyward. If you like these artists, you will also like this cd. It's a great quality pop album, and a good compilation.

Now, my next move is to get "It's better to travel" on cd...

5 out of 5 stars Martini's & Bikini's.......2001-12-30

Let's begin this review with a question that has baffled me for years now. Which, simply put is, why hasn't this incredible U.K. group Swing Out Sister become a huge success here in America? They have all the correct ingrediants i.e. attractive female lead, infectious melodies and adult lyrics, that you can actually sing while in the privacy of your shower ( I know I have ). Yet, here in this country they probably couldn't even get arrested. It certainly doesn't bode well for the state of 'Pop' music here in the U.S. when artists of dubious talent such as Jewel are able to push more cd's out of the store than this incredible band. It's more than just a shame but...

Being a fan of this wonderful duo ( which actually began as a trio! ) I'll certainly do my part to sing their praises. The release of " Breakout " is an import compilation that includes not only their biggest hit to date," Breakout " but also a host of other songs that, while they may not seem recognizable at first, will soon become so. Highlight's for me include, " Am I the Same Girl ", " Notgonnachange " and " Blue Mood ", the last being an infectious bluesy number that I'm listening to right now. Heck, half the fun in owning this disc is finding out which tunes you like best! SOS's forte in writing tunes is simply putting together wonderful melodies with insightful lyrics and a spice of smooth jazz and R&B thrown in for good measure. This is truly Britpop at it's very best and, other than Lisa Stansfield, I can think of no other group that performs this style of music any better than SOS. And while I'm sure some listener's may consider this style a little too slick and contemporary for their taste that may be the reason I enjoy this band as much as I do. The entire disc carries a slightly nightclub/martini aura about it that feels just right. They don't pretend to anything other than what they set out to do....and I find that terribly refreshing.

In ending, if you prefer your music slightly jazzy with a 'pop' sensibility than please give Swing Out Sister a try. I've given this disc away as gifts on several occassions and the recipients never fail to tell me how thrilled they are with this 'new group' SOS! Well, who am I to ruin their fun! So run and pick up your copy of " Breakout " and soon you'll be a true trend setter in your neighborhood. And, with... pricing this disc at a budget rate, than you've no excuse as to why your not at home, listening to SOS, and dancing around your living room floor, singing with sheer abandonment. Just make sure you put something on when step out of that shower! Thanks

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic value for a Wonderful Group.......2001-10-17

Swing out Sister is one of my favorite groups. I have most of their albums including many imports. This is a real value for an import and is a fairly comprehensive review of the group's earlier material. Appreciated greatly in Japan, SOS seems to have suffered from its lack of fitting to a genre in the States.

The group's distinquishing features are the lead female vocals which are amazing and which I never tire of and really fun and interesting arrangements. Its pop-jazz or jazz-pop or whatever. What it is really, is fun and light but always musically interesting at the same time. Can't beat this value if you are new to SOS or a long-time fan. If you are new I would get this and then the Living Return (I feel the best SOS album out there) and Shape and Patterns. These 3 will give you a good feel for the group and then you can decide if you want to buy the more recent albums which are import only.

5 out of 5 stars All the singers on the album have soulpower.......2006-08-12

Will the new album "Break Out" be the breakthrough album to a broader audience for Soulive? That's up for you to decide after listening to their funky soul music with strong guitar playing and a hot portion of jazz.
Soulive is formed by Neal Evans, Alan Evans and Eric Krasno together with a horn section consisting of Rashawn Ross and Ryan Zoldis. The vocalists on "Break Out" are Chaka Khan, Reggie Watts, Ivan Neville, and Corey Glover. There are fifteen tracks on the album including three interludes and four instrumentals. The music from Soulive is not soul for softies. The guys are here to play and once they got the soul engine started they keep it running until the end in interlude III. Guest musicians like Robert Randolph and percussionist Danny Sandownick fully contribute to the music.

In their guitar playing Soulive might remind you of the Isley Brothers who fully used guitars too back in the 70-ies. Another example of their love for guitar you'll hear in the beautiful cover of the 1968 version of crosstown traffic from guitar legend Jimi Hendrix. In between this funky rocking soul music you'll get some cool latin sounds as well like in the song cachaca. All the singers on the album have soulpower which is an essential part of Soulive.

4 out of 5 stars top 20 on my ipod.......2006-08-02

I really enjoy this album. I wouldn't have come across this group within my usual musical circles, however, they were on NPR and I enjoyed how articulate they were when discussing their music and when excerpts were played I was hooked. This is a great album for working, driving, hanging out at the gym. I really enjoy this one.

2 out of 5 stars It's Soulive but not as ALIVE as they can be.......2006-02-21

For me, the real Soulive can be heard in their fantastic Turn It Out album. That one really showcases the band in its true form - the core of the band is an extremely tight and exciting rhythm section, with wonderful melodic licks from the guitar and organ. That's all I need, personally, and this new album gives us that in places (Reverb, Breakout, Take It Easy) but much of the album seems to have covered over the main nerve of creativity within the band.

Perhaps this is due to the higher production values on the record, which are very clean but not as raw and visceral as on Turn It Out. Also, the guest vocals are pleasant, and there are some quite happy multi-instrumental jams on show, but for me this all is gloss over what I really want - Soulive jamming it hard as a 3 piece and letting the juices flow!

I suppose the best way to experience this is to see the band live, so if they are in your town get some tickets straight away!
I'm still in love with this band, although this album doesn't give me the kick I get from some of their earlier work. This CD is growing on me though, as it reveals sophisticated depths...
Give it some patience, and this becomes a mellow treat. It might not get you freaking out on the underground as you listen to it on your iPod though...
p.s. That is a reference to me listening to Turn It Out on the London Underground. Can't help going crazy to Soulive!)

3 out of 5 stars Break Out, to where?.......2006-02-19

Break Out has a strong soul flavor, which a lot of vocal tracks. The best song is "Got Soul" which sounds instantly familiar (if they're copying someone else's song they do a great job). The other vocal songs are okay. The instruments, though, are lacking on this album. There isn't much to keep it interesting, save for some sharp horn lines. It's easy to believe these songs would be great heard live in a sweaty club and the volume turned up to 'earthquake'. This CD just isn't very compelling.

5 out of 5 stars Now This Is What I Was Lookin' For!.......2005-12-02

I have been a fan of Soulive since I first read a MODERN DRUMMER interview with Alan Evans in '01. After I read the article I decided to check out the "Doin' Something" CD and wasn't disappointed. I loved the sound of the band and couldn't wait for future releases. Welllll... the material that they recorded before (but released after) "Doin' Something" was a little raw but had excellent material, but I didn't count that as "new" stuff". "Next" really let me down- material wasn't quite as sharp, production was too glossy sounding for my taste and drums sounded weak. Then there was a live album and a remix album- both good, but I wanted something from the studio that would hit me like "Something". Finally it came with "Break Out"! It hit me from beginning to end, maybe even a lil harder than "Something". The material was fresh and on-point, had very good guest vocals, and there was definitely a different plan in mind (to my ear) as far as the production. The organ sound seemed a just a little further back in the mix, guitar and horns (most notably the trumpet) took a more prominent lead, and the snare had a little more body to it. Overall, a great sounding CD that shows some growth of the Soulive sound. Personal favorites: Reverb (too funky!!), Break Out, Take It Easy, Vapor, and What Can You Do. Pick this up if you are a fan!!

Excellent CD. One of their best. The title song is one of my favorites.

5 out of 5 stars Hit Or Miss!!!!!!.......2004-08-06

This album is a "hit or miss." It's very experimental. Most Spyro fans probally either love it, or hate it. Then there's the small percentage who can just tolerate it. This album is very "80's" sounding. There is a good blend of jazz though. The best track on the album is the title track. Breakout, I first heard on Spyro's Collection album, a rare un available compilation made in 1991. It has amazing solos delivered by all. Tom Schuman, your great on the keys! And might I add Dave Samuels' marimba solo. Great hot stuff! Bob Goes To The Store and Whirlawind are my personal favorites. Like I said, this album is a hit or miss. You might love it, you might hate it. Your gonna have to take a risk with it.

5 out of 5 stars predictable perfection.......2003-11-17

This is a great spyro album that diserves more credet than it gets,it is my personal favorite.

5 out of 5 stars A review of Spyro Gyra's Breakout........2003-04-28

Breakout is a very underrated cd. It is a good one, however. It was the fourth Spyro Gyra cd that I ever purchased. It would rank in my top 7 favorite Spyro Gyra albums of all time. It was released in the year of 1986. The decade of their greatness. I'll admit that this isn't your average Spyro Gyra. They wanted to try something new and they were sucsessful at it. It's a fantastic cd and every song has something to offer. I can't comprehend why some people despise it so much.

My top 3 favorite songs on the album wuold have to be 1,3, and 4. Bob Goes To The Store is a great song featuring an awesome bass solo in it. Doubletake is good and Jay does some great playing in it. Breakout is an upbeat, fast, and energizing song. It does well at displaying the groups obvious talent. Every song on here is admirable.

This cd is underrated. It is good and deserves more praise of it. Believe me, I know my Spyro Gyra. You should purchase this album. You might just happen to love it as much as I do. Thank you for taking the time and generosity to read my review.

5 out of 5 stars Breakout the funk.......2002-06-27

By mid 1971, Creed Taylor's independent CTI Records had gained a lot of fame. From the label's small beginnings as a subsidiary of A&M, the label gave birth to some of Wes Montgomery's most popular later sides, and introduced the mainstream world to a young George Benson. The label had huge hits from artists such as the fiery trumpeter Freddie Hubbard, the soul dripping tenor saxophone of Stanley Turrentine, and Benson. CTI's offerings were lush and slick, utilizing the finest players, and wonderful gatefold LP covers. Soul jazz was a big market, and Taylor created the Kudu label to specialize in soul jazz, and also to reach out more to an African American audience.

The first Kudu release, "Breakout" was cut by organist Johnny "Hammond" Smith, a player out of the Jimmy Smith school with a reputation for putting out solid soul jazz. For his first outing with the label, Hammond was joined by CTI veterans alto saxophonist Hank Crawford, session guitarist extraordinare Eric Gale (later a member of the R&B band Stuff) percussionist Airto Moreira and Billy Cobham on drums. Rounding out the cast are trumpeter Danny Moore, bassist Johnny Williams and a hot newcomer on tenor saxophone named Grover Washington, Jr.

"It's Too Late", a Carole King hit, contains a great chart from Grover and some nice playing from all concerned at a slow boiling, greasy medium tempo funk groove. Hammond's chordal work is nice, and exquisitely funky, and he brings forth a nice heated solo, as does Washington. Billy Cobham works in some nice double time throughout for each soloist. Neil Sadaka's "Workin On a Groovy Thing" is treated as a straight ahead swinger, Hammond's lines quick, fleeting and bluesy, Grover Washington delivers another fine solo turn, his phrases earthy with a boppish tinge. His command of the tenor here is wonderful, proving that there was a time when he was blowing with fire and substance.

Hank Crawford is well featured on the ballad "Never Can Say Goodbye", an R&B hit of the time. Arranger Leo Johnson provides a slick horn chart, and Crawford rises to the occasion with a sultry improvisation, displaying a huge, vocal, gospel inflected tone honed through his years with Ray Charles. Cobham keeps a nice steady beat and Hammond again lays down some funky chords. "Blues Selah" penned by Johnson, is a funky shuffle blues with everyone really loosening up. Hammond and Washington in particular vibrant form. Johnny's solo is bursting with cleverness and some nice funky right hand chords. "Breakout", the original album closer is a nasty, sweaty groove laden blues, with the spotlight on Hammond. Behind Gale's relentless stream of funk riffs and Cobham's strong push, Hammond's ideas of very reminiscent of Jimmy Smith, right hand trills and a drone pattern mark a strong final spot for Johnny. Grover Washington plays with strength and power, leaving the door wide open for Crawford as the tune fades.

A bonus unreleased live version of "It's Too Late" recorded at the Hollywood Palladium in July, 1971 with the CTI All Stars closes the disc. Weighing in at 16:18, it is superior to the studio version in feeling and energy. An added plus is due to the presence of George Benson taking Gale's spot. Benson's much greater technical facility brings a greater fluidness and funkiness to his lines that is a real treat. Benson's solo slowly gains heat as Hammond pulls all stops out* and riffs feverishly behind George. Hammond's solo is remarkable in it's intensity and pacing. He begins with sly bluesy lines, slowly working up to a roaring crescendo with all stops out, using incessently funky riffs and drone patterns. The sound of his organ is much dirtier with his Leslie speaker in overdrive. The tension doesn't end, it is picked up by Cobham with a flashy drum solo. Hammond restates the melody closing the tune, barely letting the raucous crowd catch it's breath. The first time on CD and remastered in excellent 24 bit sound, "Breakout" is recommended to fans who love funk, R&B and soul jazz. Purists should steer clear, this is simple soul satisfying stuff, no tricky stuff here.

*all stops out- an effect achieved by pulling all the organ's drawbars out, creating a pipe organ like sound.

4 out of 5 stars A soul-jazz classic.......2002-05-16

Johnny Hammond Smith was well known for his sublime ballad playing; no one played organ ballads more dramatically and soulfully then he, but on 'Breakout' he's in 100% funk mode, and it's definitely his best Kudu album by far. Not only was it Johnny's first for CTI's sub-label Kudu, it was the first Kudu release by anyone. This album is consistently good; every song has a funky and unique groove, with superb soloing. When you've got sidemen like Eric Gale and Billy Cobham, that's no surprise. The highlight of the disc, perhaps, is a previously unreleased, smoking hot live version of Carole King's 'It's Too Late', with George Benson taking a couple long, very creative guitar solos and Johnny going absolutely nuts on the organ, manipulating the drawbars and Leslie like a demon. And, Cobham takes a long, intense drum solo. The whole CD is great, but it's worth any price you pay just for that one live track alone, hidden in the vaults until now.

Although Johnny did other albums after this one, he never was able to recapture the greatness of Breakout, which isn't too far in style from his classic Prestige dates (all of which are highly recommended for soul-jazz fans, particularly "That Good Feeling", which is one of the best soul-jazz recordings ever released.) Johnny did not get as much press as some of the other organ players, but he was a virtuoso, and he never made a bad album including and prior to "Breakout". Although he passed a few years ago, I feel that someday Johnny's gonna get his due as the musical genius that he was. Get "Breakout" right away, you won't regret it.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely great Hammond!.......2002-03-06

Together with "Red Clay" the Freddie Hubbard album, this is absolutely my favourite of the CTI albums, and it just got better. Firstly it has been remastered really well, and secondly the bonus track is almost worth the price of admission on its own. I was afraid that the two "pop" tunes included in the listing might not have worn well, but they have, with the first version of Carole King's "It's too late" illustrating everthing that's great about the playing. Of particular note is the interplay between Hank Crawford and (a very young!) Grover Washington.Special mentions for their contributions throughout to Billy Cobham who is propulsive when needs be, but laid back when he should be. It's also a great showcase for Eric Gale, whose guitar work, especially on "Blues Selah" is completely empathetic to what's going on around him. The selection of tunes is great, the version of Neil Sedaka's "Workin' on a groovy thing" gives the tune something new. Then, as if the original album wasn't enough, they've attached a second version of "It's too late" that clocks in at 16.18, and adds George Benson in place of Gale, and has Stanley Turrentine on Tenor in place of Washington. The result is a cooking version of Track One that shows the different improvisational skills of all the participants from a session that was recorded a month later. It's "worn" incredibly well. Go buy!

      Album Description

So you think the Shangri-Las were tough and streetwise girls? Well, you ain't heard nothing. The Whyte Boots 'Nightmare' takes the 'Leader Of The Pack' scenario to the next level: a girl has been showing off the singer's boyfriend's ring, leading to a vicious catfight in which one of the girls is killed!! Woah! But in reality, the Whyte Boots did not exist, but were a construct of Brill Building hit girls Lori Burton and Pam Sawyer, writers of hits for the likes of the Young Rascals and a slew of Motown acts. They were among the few female writers who produced and arranged their own acts. In the wake of their having written some chartbusters and the newsworthy scandal over 'Nightmare', Mercury decided to give Lori, who had released a few singles along the way (many of them Northern Soul staples today) a shot at an album. Breakout! has a cover showing Lori in biker chick/Cleopatra makeup breaking out (geddit?) of a barrier consisting of a huge Billboard chart. From the strains of 'Nightmare' to the thundering Northern Soul extravaganza of 'Gotta Make You Love Me' what we have here is an explosive collision between Northern Soul and outrageously camp girl-group kitsch that just won't quit. Rev-ola. 2005.

5 out of 5 stars Another supercharged power-pop explosion from the Romantics!.......2006-03-07

The Romantics have delivered some of the best power-pop and garage rock of the last 25 years. Taking a cue from the early Kinks, Rolling Stones and the Who, the Romantics excel at beat and riff driven rock 'n roll. If you're a fan of any of the aforementioned "legendary" rock acts from the 60's and have never taken a listen to the Romantics you'll be amazed at the sonic GOLD they created! Fans of modern "revival" groups like JET should certainly check out the Romantics.

Nothing quite compares to the debut release by the Romantics, but "national breakout" is a very strong release with some very cool tracks.

Tomboy - a bit weak lyrically, but strong on riffs.
Forever Yours - The Romantics deliver some sweet power-pop.
Stone Pony - Plenty of Power Riffs here! Great song!
New Cover Story - Another "sweet" power-pop effort.
A Night Like This - More Riffs from garage heaven!
National Breakout - Lots of Power on this Track!
      21 and Over - Cool!
I Can't tell you anything - Kind of sounds like a Rolling Stones song.
Take Me Out of the Rain - A great "pop" effort. Very Cool!
Friday at the Hideout - An Amazing track, the RIFFS will blow you out of your chair!
Poor Little Rich Girl - Great track with a "fierce" ending.

There isn't anything on this release on the scale of "What I like About You" or many of the other essential tracks off of the debut effort, but a song like "Friday at the Hideout" cannot go overlooked, it's a garage rock classic!

The Romantics would falter (only once) with their next release titled "strictly personal" (due to the HORRIBLE production of Mike Stone). They would recover nicely with "In Heat", an effort that would finally generate two top 40 hits (One in a Million and Talking in Your Sleep) and which had some major riff driven tracks like "Rock You Up", "Got Me Where You Want Me" and "Love Me to the Max". Strong releases "Rhythm Romance", "Made in Detroit" and "61/49" would follow.

If you consider yourself a fan of Power-Pop, Mod, or Garage Rock and you don't own this release, your collection is not complete!

      5 out of 5 stars It's a good album-but............2005-07-17

This a good "Romantics" album-but the question is-WHY IS IT SO DARN EXPENSIVE?! I originally got this 'way back in the Early 80's when it first came out on vinyl and I remember thinking it was a little harder edged than their first album. Are there just certain "Romantics" cds that are out of print? It's too bad if they are-they're a great "Party Band"
