Customer Reviews:
good album.......2007-04-03
Yes, almost everybody was expecting next death'n'roll album. But this one is more "roll" than "death".. that's all! For more "death" look earlier or later ;)
Are people even listening to the same album I am?.......2005-11-21
I have often read reviews of this record on a number of on line mags and this is always as heralded as the beginning of the Entombed demise. I keep wondering what record they are listening. All their experimentation with actual singing, groove oriented riffs, and textures went beautifully right on this record. This record only stands a slight shade under "Wolverine Blues" for artistic unity. It is like all the greatest riffs and songs that were never used from before N. Andersson left the band all made it onto to a very potent blend of bluesy-groove stoner rock. (And I HATE that term by the way.) Whoever wants there bands to stay the same and resist evolution needs to listen to all their records after this one, which don't even come close to the beauty of this record. For fans of Karma to Burn, Kyuss, The Haunted, and Nailbomb, this will truly inspire.
Not the fans favorite, not their best..........2005-01-28
Imagine that you're in front of the speakers and your friend tells you to "listen to this new CD". You don't know waht band it is. He pushes play, and the music starts to sound. "It sounds heavy and dirty. It sounds like Entombed. The singer seems Entombed's LG Petrov. This is some kind of side project from Entombed's members". To my surprise and disappointment my friedn answered "NO! It's the new Entombed album" - he said.
I was really surprised when I first listened to "Same Difference". Is not the same old hard-crushing-riffing Entombed of old. The swedish band that delivered gems such as "Left hand path", Clandestine" and "Wolverine Blues" , that has plyed a major role in the Swedish's metal scene and still remains influential. Even "To Ride..." is much better than this one. If "Same difference" is a hundred miles from "To Ride..." then it's a hundred lightyears away from their first albums.
The song writing has clearly changed. It deliberately took another direction. Slower, less heavier with almost no reminescenses of death metal (except for the guitar sound). The band decided to experiment with a more modern approach and tunes, alternative rock and other influences. But, besides that, is the album good? The music may change, but the album can be good anyway. Personally, it's not what I'd have expected from Entombed. It's just that this new approach doesn't fit. Something's missing. Brutality. Speed. The band is not what they used to be.
The song writing for this album was in Alex Hellid's and Uffe Cederlund's hands mostly. Nicke Anderson, who has always written most of the band's music left after their previous album, "To Ride..." and his abscence is noticeable, not only behind the drum kit, but as a musician and composer as well. This doesn't mean that Hellid and Cederlund are terrible songwriters, totally the opposite, they've written lots of great songs in the past, but, and as I said before, they purposely focused Entombed's music somewhere else.
We can say that "Same difference" is a nice try in doing something different, but I'm sure all the fans miss the haviness and brutality. The attitude of the band is more relaxed and tranquil, like if they were a bunch of 50-year olds riffing just for the fun of it (like you see on the booklet's photos). Not even the bonus tracks, which I already had, can save "Same difference" from this wreckage. "Smart aleck" and "20/20 vision" are just hints, illussions of what the band once was.
I've followed the band since the beginning, and is not that I'm old fashioned and think that the band should be doing the same on and, release after release, but I think there are different ways in trying to something different. "To ride..." is the perfect example of "evolution", and a great record indeed, but "Same Difference" is the perfect example of "changing"...
For all new and old fans, I don't recommend you this album, except if you're a die-hard fan and want to complete your collection and fill your cd shelves. "Put on clandestine" - I sadly said to my friend.
Interesting.......2003-07-29
Let me start off by saying that I've been sort of a backwards Entombed fan. I'd heard them over the years but it wasn't until last year and the near-perfect metal opus "Morning Star" that I realized that they rock. (I'm glad I started late as, even though you death purists insist to the contrary, early Entombed is comical compared to their now trademark "death and roll" approach which maintains the intensity but forsakes the repetition of straight up death) I picked up "Inferno" and "Uprising" recently and, though "Inferno" is a bit lacking, they still remain a top metal act. So then I went out and got "Same Difference" and was extremely surprised at how much of a departure it is. It almost seems like the guys were listening to a lot of alternative-type stuff and tried to implement it into their style. The pummelling, propulsive hammering that is their trademark is nearly completely absent and it just sounds really experimental. That said, it's still a really cool album...it just sounds like they tried something completely different. Traces of COC, Sabbath and Mind Funk permeate the album, but the relentless bludgeoning that is Entombed's trademark is, without question, lacking. When all is said and done, I really like the album and have listened to it several times and will continue to do so but BEWARE...don't expect another "Wolverine Blues," "Uprising," or "Morning Star." But for a change of pace, it's pretty cool.
Good place to start..........2003-07-13
Entombed, like In Flames has evolved a lot over the years. From guttural death metal to blistering uhhh... regular metal. Same Difference is one of Entombeds most polished releases IMO, slick production and some of thier greater lyrical stylings. Slamming mid-paced metal, much like Sabbath mated with Slayer and slowed down a bit... But a sound all thier own in most respects. From Addiction King to 20/20 Vision all the way to the bonus tracks, to be honest one or two grating sleepers but hey like I said, Mid-paced metal. I'd recommend thier newer releases Morning Star, Uprising if you're more of a Slayer fan. This one is for the Corrosion Of Conformity, Clutch and Black Sabbath fans. Not thier best, but stands on it's own as a great place to start with Entombed. Lot's of extras that will keep your head buried in the sand.
