3 out of 5 stars What, me complain?.......2005-08-18

Saints and Friends, if you've ever been down and hated everyone around, listen to "I Won't Complain". I bought the CD after hearing the extended version not knowing the artist is no longer w/us. Although this song is popular during anniversaries and district meetings, you've NEVER heard it like Brother Jones does it here! When you play this song everyone notices and reacts because it's simply awe-some. This is preachin-singin at its finest, right up there w/Bruce Parham and Bishop Ronald Brown. Sadly, the other selections on the CD are subpar at best due to poor recording quality but still, repeat "I Won't Complain" and let it minister to you. May the Lord bless all who hear this CD.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars stunning studio album in creamy stereo.......2004-08-05

This studio album of Weill and Gershwin's LADY IN THE DARK features the lovely Rise Stevens making the role of Liza Elliott her own, with Adolph Green in the role that made Danny Kaye a star in the original production.

This sumptuous reissue on the Columbia 'Masterworks Heritage' label presents the recording in creamy stereo, with the orchestra under the baton of Lehman Engel. Rise Stevens is perhaps the best singer to have played Liza on any recording of LADY IN THE DARK. The trained opera singer lets her hair down for the manic "Saga of Jenny", and yields glowing versions of "My Ship" and "One Life to Live". Also featured among the cast are John Reardon and Stephanie Augustine.

My only qualm about the release is the horrid packaging. The disc is enclosed in a cardboard sleeve at the back of a booklet-style slipcase, leaving the CD vulnerable to scratches and dust (I remedied the problem by putting the CD in a separate plastic jewel case and filing it on the shelf next to the empty booklet case). However this should not deter collectors and musical theatre fans from seeking out this lovely recording.

5 out of 5 stars STELLAR STAR!.......2003-01-03

MISS STEVENS shinesas Liza Eliot in this perfect recording of "Lady in the Dark". [For the first time - with repect to the other artists - the lyrics are pristine!] THE recording? IF you own a 'surround system' - this one IS flawless - just a perfect balance of voice and instrument. [A great restoration job - if only they could do the same to the Lawrence version....]

FOR the collector - get all three recordings currently available - the 1997 London version is the most complete, the Gertrude Lawrence? It's more of a Star Vehicle for Miss Lawrence - lots of dialogue - with really only the two "Liza' numbers - "Saga of Jenmny" and "My Ship" intact - but also well worth the journey.

AS A BONUS - Miss Stevens recording contains the Danny Kaye contribution missing from the Gertrude Lawrence recording - plus his versions of "My Ship" and "The Saga of Jenny".

4 out of 5 stars There IS a more complete recording. . ........2000-12-06

This recording is terrific, but for a more complete recording with much better quality, look for the Original Cast Recording from the Royal National Theatre Production. It's got all the bridging music which is phenomenal.

5 out of 5 stars Great Fun.......1999-04-15

Until the definitive full version of the score comes out--with all the bridging material and orchestral interludes--this is probably the most complete of one of the greatest and most charming classic Broadway scores (and probably Ira Gershwin's masterpiece). Rise Stevens was born to play the part, and though at times she gets a bit excessive (especially in the dialogue) her voice is beautiful and confident (a high point is her counterpointing the chorus during "The Best Years of His Life"), and iat times really soars, as in "This is new." Adolph Green is hilarious--it's a great tragedy he never got to play this role on Broadway.

4 out of 5 stars A fun, if abbreviated, recording.......1999-04-02

A nifty performance of one of Broadway's classic scores. The biggest problem is that just about everything is slightly abridged (mostly verses, connecting material, dialogue underscoring and choral repeats--although if I'm reading the vocal score right, most of this would still be interesting to listen to); still, a reasonably good taste of the whole thing. The liner notes also don't really give a story synopsis, so if you aren't familiar with the plot, seek out a summary so you aren't completely confused by what is going on. Rise Stevens' acting is pretty mannered, and she goes over the top vocally every now and then; she seems to be shouting, not singing at the end of "Jenny." Adolph Green is hysterically funny and acquits himself supremely well in "Tchaikovsky." How you'll enjoy the appendix of Danny Kaye's recordings depends on how much you like Danny Kaye--enough said.

    5 out of 5 stars A great collection.......2004-02-28

This is a really fabulous collections of songs. There is a great balance of old and new. This isn't a collection from one single genre and the diversity keeps the mix interesting. It's great to hear songs that wouldn't normally be noticed while a movie is playing and it's also great to hear those easily recognizable tunes from popular movies.

3 out of 5 stars Amazing performances, mostly substandard fidelity .......2007-07-29

About one year after Live at The Apollo, Vol. One, was recorded, JB & co. traveled to Baltimore, Maryland, USA to record this show. It made alot of sense to do so, especially since that earlier effort, pushed for and paid for by the foresightfull Brown, made alot of money...made musical and cultural history.
Well, there are differences: the '62 opus was well engineered, all instruments with presence, audience mixed in; here one must surmise, the equipment, the acoustics - not the music - didn't cut it. Even on CD, the real live tracks (several strong numbers are overdubbed studio), are very difficult to deal with aurally: it simply sounds as if a reel-to-reel tape recorder was placed about halfway back in the orchestra, and the band sounds distant; the beat can be hard to pick up for non-musicians.
That in itself can lend to the "feel" of a great event, and not to the best in listening for the unititiated. So, if you're a deep fan, or just want to experience James Brown in 1963, this one's okay (though not for heavy revisitation, or car listening).
"Signed, Sealed, and Delivered" [not the S. Wonder tune] is pure rock and soul, one of the better-sounding real-live cuts; "These Foolish Things", to me, is far better than the 45rpm issue. Within a few notes, the audiences' *silence* spells rapture.
Hats off to the enghineers who pieced together the studio "Oh, Baby Don't You Weep" and the live "Please, Please, Please", though, listening with *today's* ears, you want to say, if they're gonna do that, find an alternate vocal to overdub! This segment is "PG" all the way - somewhat risque - which might further trouble some listeners who are reminded of the gospel song, "Oh Mary, Don't You Weep", and don't believe in mixing "oil and water". To put a positive spin [no pun] on the concept, yes it's gospel *style* mixed with R & B.

5 out of 5 stars THE FAMOUS FLAMES.......WHO WERE THEY ?.......2006-06-30

James Brown and the Famous Flames are PURE DYNAMITE and this is the GREATEST LIVE ALBUM EVER RECORDED...But I wonder ...just how many people reviewing this CD really KNOW just WHO The FAMOUS FLAMES really were? If you ,like so many other music writers and Rock historians think that the FLAMES were the name of JAMES BROWN'S BAND ...you are INCORRECT !!! Please go back and read or re- read James' autobiography...then go on the internet and obtain the movies SKI PARTY and the TAMI SHOW.Then read the liner notes on the LIVE AT THE APOLLO CD...and ALL of the POLYDOR CD re-issues of James and the Flames early albums... such as the "PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE" album, the "THINK" album and the TRY ME album...They all say the SAME THING..."THE FAMOUS FLAMES ARE NOT THE BACKUP BAND ...THEY ARE THE VOCAL GROUP" !!! ANYONE who says otherwise DOESNT KNOW THE HISTORY OF JAMES BROWN!! JAMES himself even explained this on the DAVID LETTERMAN SHOW...but many so- called rock music historians still dont get the MESSAGE !! THE FAMOUS FLAMES were: BOBBY BYRD-the group's founder, and the man who actually discovered James Brown,BOBBY BENNETT,and the late LLOYD STALLWORTH..who replaced departing original member JOHNNY TERRY...JAMES BROWNS BAND was called ...believe it or not... THE JAMES BROWN BAND !! This means that stellar players such as FRED WESLEY, MACEO PARKER,ALFRED "PEE WEE " ELLIS AND OTHERS were BAND MEMBERS...NOT FAMOUS FLAMES !!THE FAMOUS FLAMES AND THE BAND WERE TWO SEPARATE ENTITES !!the ROLLING STONE HISTORY OF ROCK AND ROLL was one of the few printed publications that actually GOT IT RIGHT! In showing a picture of the JB troupe on stage back in the sixties..it clearly stated that JAMES was..."with the Famous Flames AND the James Brown Band!!Why the confusion? Part of the reason centered around a very strange practice of KING RECORDS (JAMES'record label back then) of showing ONLY THE LEAD SINGER on many of their vocal groups' classic fifties and sixties albums. They did this- not only with JAMES BROWN AND THE FLAMES'albums...but with HANK BALLARD AND THE MIDNIGHTERS'albums as well. People only know what they see...And what they saw was only JAMES BROWN'S AND HANK BALLARD'S faces on the album covers...AND NOT THEIR RESPECTIVE GROUPS.Another problem is the unfortunate practice on the part of music writers over the last 15 years or so of calling the great r&b vocal groups "bands" because their rock- oriented counterparts were. (example..artists such as THE MIRACLES,THE TEMPTATIONS,AND THE FOUR TOPS ARE NOT "BANDS",BUT RATHER VOCAL GROUPS OR SINGING GROUPS...While artists such as THE BEATLES , THE ROLLING STONES,AND THE BEACH BOYS are bands..They actually play instruments on stage). These two factors have combined to cause a confusion toward THE FAMOUS FLAMES in the eyes of the music buying public that has persisted to this day... and has cost them a possible spot in the ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME along with JAMES,which they so richly deserve.(ANYONE WHO HAS SEEN THE MOTION PICTURE "THE TAMI SHOW" will have to admit-JAMES BROWN AND THE FAMOUS FLAMES STOLE THE SHOW - BLOWING AWAY THE STONES , THE SUPREMES , AND EVERYONE ELSE}.the FLAMES also appeared with James in the Frankie Avalon movie "SKI PARTY" in a non- singing, non-speaking role, and on the ED SULLIVAN SHOW twice, dressed differently than the band, and unfortunately uncredited .THE FAMOUS FLAMES are one of the great UNSUNG GROUPS in ROCK & R&B HISTORY. In 1964,James stopped recording with the FLAMES in the studio,But they still continued to perform with him on stage for another 4-5 years...and their name still appeared on the records,so most people thought the name applied to the band. After the FLAMES disbanded , BOBBY BYRD remained with James, and that's his voice you hear echoing James on hits such as "SEX MACHINE","SOUL POWER", "MAKE IT FUNKY",AND "GET ON UP, GET INTO IT,GET INVOLVED" . So,the next time you listen to "LIVE AT THE APOLLO",PURE DYNAMITE:LIVE AT THE ROYAL, or early hits such as PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE , TRY ME,THINK, BEWILDERED,OH BABY DONT YOU WEEP,or other great songs... remember..the guys you hear SINGING ...NOT PLAYING INSTRUMENTS in the background...are indeed the mighty FAMOUS FLAMES..BOBBY BYRD, BOBBY BENNETT,JOHNNY TERRY, AND LLOYD STALLWORTH. read JAMES'AUTOBIOGRAPHY...IT'S ALL THERE..THE FAMOUS FLAMES ARE A SINGING GROUP.. NOT A BAND!!

5 out of 5 stars Prime James Brown! 1963.......2005-03-25

1963 is about the time that this record was done. Part live and part studio intermixed. The energy is so phenomenal and overwhelming that you will pass out from exhaustion just listening to "Shout and Shimmy", 'I'll Never Let You Go" and "Please Please Please". This Record is the second best album cut by Brown, eclipsed only by Live at the Apollo vol.1. This record is KILLER!

5 out of 5 stars Lost gem of a live album.......2004-11-08

Some 30+ years have passed since Ashton, Gardner & Dyke let it roll in Belgium but thanks to the wonderful work of Purple Records we are finally being treated to the first ever live and extremely satisfying AGD release.

Before Tony Ashton's involvement in various Deep Purple related projects in the mid-`70's he was leader of Ashton, Gardner & Dyke, a classic, but often overlooked British rock band. AGD combined the power of the emerging hard rock of the early `70's with the musicianship and instrumentation of jazz.

The three studio albums and movie soundtrack they released before disbanding in 1972 have until now served as the only documented evidence of this incredibly talented outfit. Now Let It Roll allows us to glimpse the genius of this young but mind bogglingly accomplished and innovative band in the raw.

First off there is the main man himself, Mr. Tony Ashton. A one-of-a-kind mix of rock star, veteran bluesman and Blackpool pier variety organist. In a music world dominated by overblown ego, Tony has always been refreshingly of-the-street, infusing heavy doses of humour into his songs and performance. But behind the often self-parodying humour lurks some serious talent. As well as being one of the country's best blues keyboardists and boasting a wonderfully gruff and soulful voice Tony is also a top-notch songwriter. Let It Roll shows Tony at his very best, performing out of his skin, with a fantastic band in his natural environment - the concert hall.

Providing Tony with a tight and raucous rhythm section are drummer Roy [...] and bassist Kim Gardner and the band is filled out with guitar and a brass section that adds some flashy Big Band dynamics.

Although the studio albums are worthy testament to the brilliance of the band, Let It Roll shows that live the band took the music to another level of exuberance and power. This live glimpse finally allows us a close-up view of the wildly talented young band rocking and jazzing out with total abandon.

"It's Gonna Be High Tonight", a soulful, boozy number from the band's 3rd album "What A Bloody Long Day It's Been" gets proceedings off to a gentle, slightly ominous start. Unlike the disappointingly flat studio version, which was released after this recording was made, Ashton's fabulously gutsy vocal performance and foreboding lyrics are right up in the mix building the tension wickedly above the slow bluesy piano chords. It's an unconventional start to a concert but when the brass section comes pounding in towards the end of the song the whole concert starts to roll well and truly. Following a fiery drum intro from [...] they launch into a blistering version of "Let It Roll" and the band is now supercharged and in ferocious fettle. The track is played markedly faster than the fabulously strutting studio version and also boasts some wicked improvisational piano soloing from Tony and a wonderfully tight'n'punchy brass accompaniment.

From there the band run into ""Mr. Freako" delivering more of the same potent cocktail of piano based hard rock, ballsy vocals and groovy horns. The song ends with a raucous trumpet solo underpinned by an immense jam-like fest with everyone going ten-to-the-dozen on their respective instruments. The slightly psychedelic 60's, frenzied jazz of "It's a Drag, I'm a Drag" is next up showcasing trumpet and piano solos over a pulsating jazz-bass line.

"I'm Dying For You" (off Ashton & Lord's movie soundtrack "The Last Rebel") is markedly different live than on the jaunty cowboy-esq studio version. Here the song is more balladic and heartfelt with some wonderfully soulful vocals from Tony. "Resurrection Shuffle" was the band's huge hit single and it gets the audience going with its catchy drum shuffle and brass riff. The live version is faithful to the original studio version with some additional piano soloing from Tony.

After the commerciality of the shuffle the band embark on two 14-minute songs showcasing lengthy improvised solos on the Hammond, trumpet, sax, trombone, guitar drums and piano ! "The Falling Song" is mellow jazz and is followed by a furious and upbeat "Rolling Home" which is hard rock, but both are equally immersed in jazz improvisation. Then, in sharp contrast to the mature jazz instrumentation the band closes it's set with the wonderfully daft sing-along "Can You Get It", which could easily have been called "Resurrection Shuffle 2". Like the Shuffle the song boasts a big catchy brass riff and some silly anthemic lyrics, and like the Shuffle is a good fun contrast to the more serious jazz on offer.

As usual Purple Records have done a great job with the packaging with a nice 12-page booklet including the story of the band, photos and memorabilia. Considering the age of the recording and the fact that the tapes were lost all these years the sound quality is excellent. All in all this is an absolute gem of an album, both for long time fans of the band and for the uninitiated.

        Album Description

Golly Gee Records is proud to re-release the out-of-print and sold out "You Wanted More Wild Rock n' Roll..." We didn't stop there though - we added more than 45 minutes of recent live recordings by the band at the Annual Mooneyes Christmas Show 2002 where Ryan and the band performed for thousands of hot rod fanatics, greasers, hepcats and Southern California locals. Opening for Ryan was his special guest - Rory Justice "The Rockabilly Kid". A 13-year old steeped in rockabilly since birth - Rory holds tremendous promise for the future of rockabilly!

5 out of 5 stars Combines his 1st LP with some live shows with Rory Justice.......2004-08-25

This may be Rockin' Ryan's most essential release, because the 1st 12 tracks are from his 1st LP, whcich is 100% pure rockabilly/rock'n'roll, that sounds as if it could have been recorded in 1955! The remainder of the cd is taken from live shows, and the sound qaulity is just average, but listenable(soudnbs like radio broadcasts fro mthe 50's, unintentioanlly). Rory Justice "The Rockabilly kid" has a few solos numbers, and the whole cd is generally enjoyable. Among the highlights of the live songs are a boppin' "Rattlesnakin' Mama" and al lthe 1st 12 cuts from the studio session are exellent! A worthwhile cd for fans of vintage sounding rockabilly.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best Live Recordings of the Seventies.......2006-12-17

I agree, This is a lost Gem and should be re-issued on CD. The songs are all solid and the performance is rock (country-rock) solid. John David Call on Pedal Steel has that great classic sound, I just love it.
I think the oly other Live CD of that period that is as good as it is Elvin Bishop's 'Live and Kickin'' Album.
'I Don't Want to Fade Away' is my favorite cut from the record. Enjoy

5 out of 5 stars PURE PRAIRIE LEAGUE AT THE PEAK.......2004-11-01

Pure Prairie League is one of the best country/rock groups who were strangely ignored by music media. This album is the best "live" offering by the League. Good luck trying to get a copy on CD.

5 out of 5 stars Taking The Stage.......2003-03-24

Folks, this album/cd in my honest opinion is simply one of the best live recordings ever! The quality of musicianship shines through this recording like no other. It is perpetual perfection. Also must mention the best sound quality live I have ever heard. Larry Goshorn cranks out the leads with precise perfection and ever subtle George Ed Powell lends a powerfull presence with his vocals and guitar. The pedal steel playing of John David Call is the best in the land. For anyone who plays or studies drums, Billy Hinds delivers both great sound and lesson to anyone in the biz. A must have. Get it if you can!! Only Segers Live Bullet and Lynynrd Skynyrds One From the Road can compare.
