Sure they look pretty and sound pretty and all, but is this Montreal-based quartet ever going to amount to much, you know in the course of "rock history"? Very likely, if their captivating third album, Set Yourself on Fire, is any indication. Vocalists Amy Millan and Torquil Campbell have never harmonized better together, and the whole keyboard-heavy band is at that delectable place where they transcend their influences. Great pop music is not about "originality" (nor has it ever much been); it's a passionate marriage of idea and conviction. Sure, you can still hear the mark of Beulah, the Smiths, New Order, Broken Social Scene and Super Furry Animals in their songs. But the group has never been as confident with their marriage of lush, exuberant dreampop and dark, clever lyrics as they are here. --Mike McGonigal
Album Description
The third LP for this Canadian band, following their amazing sophomore set, "Heart;" a critical smash. "Set Yourself on Fire" is a self-proclaimed Sex, Death, & Robots record, with rich and ornate depths. Produced by TONY HOFFER (Beck, Air, Grandaddy, Phoenix).
Customer Reviews:
A rock record with poppiness.......2007-06-15
In many ways, a band like Stars, Broken Social Scene or the New Pornographers somehow manage to make very accessible records without feeling like they were recorded solely because they knew it would sell. Sure songs on this record are quite hooky yet you can instantly tell the difference between these songs or ones from say Good Charlotte or a Simple Plan. Stars last release before it got the remix treatment, Set Yourself on Fire is a very likable record and easy to sing along with and love, that is if you want to.
The album starts off with "Your Ex-Lover is Dead" with vocalists Torquil Campbell and Amy Millan trading verses before they come together at the end. This is an example of a song that gets in your head despite the lack of a proper "chorus" that repeats. "Ageless Beauty" was the big hit of the record and while musically it's quite basic, it's propelled largely by Millan's vocals which are quite ethereal in a way on the song. "Reunion" is another likable track largely sung by Campbell with Millan adding in some flavor. This is another one of those catchy tracks that will become a favorite over time. The rest of the songs are just as memorable although, some like "The First Five Times" aren't that stellar.
My absolute favorite track on the record and probably of their career is the album closer, "Calendar Girl". When taken at face value, lyrically it's very honest in that "life sucks but I'm trying" message and musically it's really 3 chords but damn if Millan doesn't sing it beautifully. When she sings the line "I'm alive" at the end, you're almost not sure if she's celebrating this fact or she's just pointing out the irony considering the subject matter: living without nothing special about it.
Like a lot of bands with duel vocalists, you tend to prefer one over the other (aside from everyone's fav Fab Four). In this case, Millan has one of the best female voices in rock today but Campbell, while no slouch in his own right, doesn't really have the emotive power Millan brings. Kind of reminds me of Oasis' Gallagher bros. with Noel being the more range-y singer but Liam being the most emotive. Granted, a lot of songs on here such as The Big Fight or Your Ex-Lover is Dead work for the trade-offs but when they're primarily Campbell-led, such as the aforementioned "First Five Times" or "He Lied About Death", despite Millan's additions, don't work as well.
All in all, it's probably one of the best records they've done and one of the better "pop rock" releases lately.
Smooth.......2007-03-02
It only took a couple of seconds listening to 'Your Ex-Lover is Dead' for me to decide that I needed to own this album. To be honest, that track stands out for its beautiful orchestration and tone. The instrumentation is well done, with a complementary mix of strings, brass, and your traditional band bits to create a beautiful, uplifting, and sombre tone.
Each song on this album is carefully produced to create a smooth tone which is mostly laidback and embracing. This is music fully imbued with uplifting melancholy.
Well It Is.......2007-02-03
This is a GREAT album if you like that sort of thing.
If only I could play the cello ... .......2007-01-12
I own every Stars albums and eps and I'd have to say they broke every expectation that I had before listen to this ... and this was only after the first 30 seconds of your ex-lover is dead.
Every song here is lyrically written with songs of love, passion, nostagia and hurt with a lush overlay of melodies. By the end of the album, you'll surrender and give yourself in to continual listens. This is the soft revolution!
You must own this album!
Perfect in every way.......2007-01-09
Seriously, this is one of the best I've purchased in a very long time. Every single song is great.

Director Tony Scott's tale of an ex-Marine-turned-bodyguard (Denzel Washington) who responds to the kidnapping of his young charge and her family with a violence-drenched cycle of revenge and torture is driven by the filmmaker's typically manic visual sense. English composer Harry Gregson-Williams, whose conjured similar action-oriented synth-symphony fusion scores for The Rundown and Spy Game, deftly expands the dimensions of that bi-polar musical sensibility here, infusing it with gentle ethnic folk touches and the ever-savory sonic contributions of Lisa Gerrard. The composer matches Scott's visually jarring action sequences with a melange of strangled guitar riffs, metallic rhythms and aggressive electronic soundscapes, contrasting them masterfully against quiet piano passages and brooding symphonic pastoralism. Contemporary Latin ballads by Gabriel Gonzalez and Cuban singer/songwriter Carlos Varela help cement the score's foreign intrigue, while Gerrard (arguably the MVP of soundtrack utility players) contributes a smart remix of the title track and collaborates with Gregson-Williams on the haunting "The End," which also features her distinctly exotic vocals. The result is a spiritual cousin to Hans Zimmer's similarly compelling brew of electronica and world music for Black Hawk Down. -- Jerry McCulley

I'm touched..........2006-05-20
The film and the music makes a magnificent combination. I'm amazed by the pictures, the music and the way it all comes together in my mind. "Smiling" is one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard and it makes the impression everlasting. I recommend this CD to anyone who wants to lean back after a hard days work and reflect on what's important in life. Because that's what this music does to you. I'm impressed.

An acclaimed debut prompts one of two kinds of follow-ups: either the band strives to broaden their palate or they attempt to deepen the colors they splashed all over that heralded first effort. The Strokes' second outing falls in the latter camp. In the tradition of the Ramones' Leave Home and Oasis' (What's the Story) Morning Glory, the Strokes largely stay the course with their second full-length release, producing an album that won't cause the stir that its predecessor did, but has a sneaky appeal all its own. Thanks to the quintet's Lower East Side roots, Velvet Underground and Television references abound with these guys, but Boston new wavers the Cars, and in particular their hit-heavy second album, 1979's Candy-O, provide a more suitable point of reference for Room on Fire. As with Ric Ocasek and company, Strokes frontman Julian Casablancas and his cohorts have a Cars-like knack for sly riffs that creep deeper into ones consciousness with each listen. Not much longer than a half hour from start to finish, this 11-song is modest in intent and execution, and succeeds quite nicely on its own terms. --Steven Stolder

Great........2007-04-25
I love this cd. My friend told me to buy it and I am so thankful she did. Every single song on this cd is catchy and unique. They have quite an 80s sound to them. I love this because it's different from what's on the radio.
As good, maybe even better than, the first .......2007-01-23
I read that this album was the expected sophomore slump for the Strokes. It made sense to me because the first one was so good I assumed the second would have to disappoint, but once I listened to Room on Fire, I disagreed with all I had read about it. It starts off grabbing your attention immediately with Whatever Happened and then goes to the equally strong Reptilia before changing direction with Automatic Stop and 12:51, both of which sound a bit different than most of Is This It. While some of the songs initially blended together for me, especially the last three tracks, this is an album I love more and more each time I listen to it. The album overall reminds me a lot of the first, but I think that's a good thing (and you probably will too if you're a fan).
My Favorite Album of all times.......2007-01-14
This album is a masterpiece!!! Why did it receive mixed reviews? This album was better than their acclaimed debut album IS THIS IT. Songs on here include 12:51,Reptilia, I Cant Win, wow too many great songs to list. The Strokes are truly the best rock band of our times, but it looks like America would much rather be listening to emo nonsense like Fall Out Boy, a band called "My Chemical Romance", Panic! At The Disco, and Death Cab For Cutie. Wow, why? The
Strokes=The Saviors of Modern Rock. Turn up your speakers and listen to this album at full blast, even better go out and buy this album.
The Typical Follow-Up Album..........2006-10-12
Few bands have been able to overcome the seemingly inevitable "sophomore slump", as music critics call it. That is, their second album doesn't measure up to the first whatsoever. This is unfortunately the case with many great bands, partly due to the fans' and critics' continual comparison to the debut album. "Room On Fire" could've very well been considered a brilliant stand-alone album, if it wasn't for their stunning first album, "Is This It". "Room On Fire" has somewhat failed to meet general expectations, being that it is evident that the band is really capable of more.
The Strokes have chosen very wisely with their release of memorable radio songs; 'Last Nite' from "Is This It", 'Reptilia' from "Room On Fire", and then 'Juicebox' from "First Impressions of Earth". These songs recall the sort of complexity and style of music of past generations. They are still thoroughly modern in sound, with Julian Casablancas' clever, articulate vocals, backed by guitar rhythms, melodious bass, and continuous drumming. Each of their albums almost seem as if they're each one whole song broken up into different phases. It's a good album, and would be even better by itself if there wasn't the shadow of "Is This It" looming over it. Still, "Room On Fire" appears to have lost some of the freshness and pep that was present in their first album.
The songs that were released as radio singles, 'Reptilia', '12:51', and 'The End Has No End', were all catchy enough to lure in album sales. The rest of "Room On Fire", however, contains many songs that are rather similar to one another. The Strokes have figured out a pretty good formula for coming up with a plausible melody, but how many times can that formula be repeated before fans get bored? When you hear one of their songs, it is unmistakably The Strokes, and it is a good thing that they have come up with their own style. However, this album as well as their 3rd album "First Impressions of Earth", suffers from having too much of the same. They are still one of the better bands around in the 00s, though they have yet to show their full potential.
Just as good as IS THIS IT and better than FIRST IMPRESSIONS.......2006-07-23
I'm not going to tell you how much I loved the song Reptilia because a lot of people have already done that, even know it's a great song. I have had this CD for a long time, infact this was my first Strokes CD. Now that I have listened to FIRST IMPRESSIONS OF EARTH and IS THIS IT a whole bunch, I find myself going back and listening to this one the most even know I own all three.
I absolutely love the part in Between Love & Hate when "Never needed anybody" is sung along with catchy yet mellow twang guitar follow through.
12:51 is one of the most styled songs on this CD. I wish the strokes would go back to writing a couple more songs that sound more similar to 12:51.
This CD makes me look forward to the next Strokes album more than any of the others.

Remaster is a HUGE Letdown.......2007-04-14
Don't get me wrong, this is a great collection of songs! I love them!
I owned the vinyl, I bought the Gold cd remaster, too. I think the problem lies with the poorly recorded basic tracks, especially the drums, which are mostly distorted, and lack any dynamic range (cardboard boxes?). Drums, bass, guitars, and synths sound as if they were squeezed onto one track in order to make room for more guitar, synth, voices and string overdubs. I was hoping that Jeff would RESCUE and RESTORE this album, and free up all those elements with a nice stereo mix. Have you heard the restoration on 60's Beatles tracks that make up the remixed/remastered Yellow Submarine? Pet Sounds in Stereo from the original Mono? The awesomely improved sound of Aqualung? Who's Next? My G-G-G-Generation? It HAS been done. The sound is a bit better, but Jeff Lynne, I am disappointed, sir!
maybe elo's best, but i am not committing myself........2007-03-17
elo doesn't get much respect from the prog-rock crowd as far as i can tell. that's too bad, because there is a lot of great music on this album that i would call classic prog-rock. this recording is not as commercial sounding as there later albums, and has more variety of sound overall. it opens with "fire on high," a stunning prop-rock instrumental, then moves into a gorgeous mid-tempo song "waterfall." this, and two other mid-tempo tunes: the hit "strange magic," and "one summer dream," are, to me, the best stuff on the album. "poker," is a fine rocker, and "down home town," sounds like a fine lost ringo starr track. fantastic album overall, and the remastering has a wonderful sound.
ELO's Answer To RUBBER SOUL, Now Given The Proper Remastering Treatment.......2007-02-22
Just as ELDORADO and A NEW WORLD RECORD are ELO's SGT. PEPPER and REVOLVER, respectively, and OUT OF THE BLUE their WHITE ALBUM, FACE THE MUSIC is their answer to RUBBER SOUL, and it's even better now that it's been remastered and had bonus cuts added. The opener, "Fire On High", was a big interpretive dance number for me- why it was never included on any anthology is anyone's guess, but now you get it in full digital glory. The other best songs here are the hard rocker "Poker", the psychedelic love song "Strange Magic", and the scathing "Evil Woman", which anyone who's seen the play or movie ANNIE would say is about the character of Miss Hannigan. I haven't heard the bonus cuts, but they provide a new window into ELO's creative process.
LYNNE WEAVES HIS STRANGE MAGIC.......2007-01-27
This is the album that pretty much to me, was the beginning of that ELO "sound" that I love so very much and was pretty much the time when ELO was really just starting get very popular. I like this album very much and their next album A NEW WORLD RECORD proved to be even better. Jeff Lynne, at this point, seemed more comfortable with the sound that he was trying to achieve for ELO. This album from start to finish is such a wonderful listen, pretty solid, and the re-mastered sound is clean and crisp. I only wish there were more songs on it, but oh well, at least the extra bonuses are a real treat. I definately recommend this album, especially if you are just starting to listen to ELO, this is beginning of what I think is the start of the great ELO sound and song writing.
Highlights: "WATERFALL","EVIL WOMAN","NIGHT RIDER" and "STRANGE MAGIC"
Perfect edition.......2007-01-05
FACE THE MUSIC one of my favorite albm in ELO and i recomended to buy that album to all fans. Inside full colour booklet with great photos and also include a few bounus tracks. I believe FACE THE MUSIC it monumental album and one of the best in ELO

Album Description
From Las Vegas, Nevada, a literal hotbed of disaffected young bands, comes The Higher, the new sound of emo, pop and R&B colliding in a dance party explosion. The new album, On Fire, overflows with hooks and harmonies of tooth-numbing sweetness, matched with dark tales of young adulthood gone awry. Signed by Epitaph founder Brett Gurewitz on the strength of their acclaimed 2005 full-length Histrionics and an incendiary live performance at the Roxy in L.A. in early 2006, The Higher have been described as Saves The Day meets Justin Timberlake. With a tour history that includes stints with fellow Las Vegans Panic! At the Disco, The Higher are ready to make the daredevil leap through the flaming hoop of pop stardom.

This CD is absolutely awesome and i would recommend anyone to get it. Amazon are good with deliverys and i have never had any problems with them. Get the Higher. Really GOOD!!
Apparently you CAN write the same song over again........2007-03-08
It's a solid CD; however 3 or 4 of the songs are re-hashed from Histrionics. Ironically one of them is Pace Yourself with it's nice chorus telling us how "you can't write the same song over again". The guys should have followed their own advice. Nonetheless, it's a good CD even if it is just Histrionics 1.5

Customer Reviews:
Flawed package, great artist.......2004-12-01
It is a treat to hear Sabicas' unaccompanied guitar work, but the packaging is inexplicably careless. It's more than the problem of skipping on the first track, or its repetition. The last FIVE tracks are repetitions of earlier tracks, and the insert gives no information about the songs, their traditions, or the artist, a man with a very interesting story. The insert also only has a sadly patronizing little bit about "authentic" music, but nothing on what that this authenticity means or why it is so fascinating.
The Greatest Artist.......2003-12-07
I grew up listening to Sabicas on my father's old 78 rpm record. He had Segovia and some others but Sabicas was always his favorite and mine, too!
Over the years, it has gotten misplaced so I am so excited to be able to give him Sebicas, the greatest artist for Christmas.
We're not worthy!.......2003-11-07
WOW!! Legendary playing of beautifully traditional songs. It's impossible to say anything negative about this disc either from a musician or listener view point. We are lucky to have recordings of a genious in action like this. surprisingly good production as well. yeah, the 1st track has a skip - who cares. six stars. Ole!!
Amazing Flamenco Guitar.......2001-08-01
This album shows the virtuosity of Sabicas, unencumbered by Cante (singing) or any other accompaniment--it is solely solo guitar. The album includes traditional flamenco styles (like Guajiras, Farruca, and Verdiales) as well as some other styles (like Ritmos del Paraguay) adapted brilliantly by Sabicas for the flamenco guitar. A couple things about the recording: several tracks on this album also appear on "All the Best Spanish Flamenco", but I would recommend this album if you're interested in the guitar as I am. Also, some of the tracks on this CD are identical (like #1 and #11, #3 and #15), but I never mind listining for a second time. There is some skipping on track 1, but track 11 is the same piece and is flawless. I think this is the best solo flamenco guitar recording I own. It is technically amazing, yet deeply musical and soulful.
A master at work.......2000-07-10
Sabicas (1913-1990) was a grand master flamenco guitarist. This album features almost an hour of first rate traditional flamenco guitar music. Sabicas' old school style should appeal to traditionalists and fans of "neuevo flamenco" as well.
The only reason I didn't give this cd 5 stars is because of some "skating" on the first track. A friend's copy does the same thing in the same spot, so there might be a flaw in the master from which these were pressed.

Excellence!.......2007-04-22
These recordings range back to 1994, with a number of tracks being from Silva Screen's "Music from the Films of Clint Eatwood" compilation, with Derek Wadsworth conducting the City of Prague Philharmonic.
Those tracks are: "The Good, The Bad and The Ugly", "A Fistful of DOllars", "For a Few Dollars More", and "Two Mules for Sister Sara". "In The Line Of Fire' also appeared on that CD, performed electronically by Mark Ayres.
The next bunch of tracks is from Silva Screen's 1996 compilation, "Cinema Paradise: The Classic Film Music of Ennio Morricone", which included the majority of tracks here such as the extensive The Mission Suite, The Untouchables, Casulaties of War, Once Upon a Time In America, 1900, Chi Mai, Marco Polo, Once Upon a Time In The West (two tracks), Cinema Paradise, and The Good the Bad and the Ugly - Ecstacy of Gold, mostly being conducted by Paul Bateman, with Nic Raine doing some of the conducting duties as well.
Hamlet is from Silva's 1997 "Cinema's Classic Romances" compilation, while "The Thing" is from Silva's 2001 "Essential John Carpenter".
A Fistful of Dynamite - Duck You Sucker is from 2002's Way Out West: Essential Western Film Music Collection Volume Two.
The remaing tracks were newly recorded in 2004 for this release:
Days of Heaven, Exorcist II, Guns for San Sebastian, Moses the Lawgiver, My Name is Nobody, The Five Man Army, The Red Tent, The Men From Shiloh and The Sicilian Clan.
Highly recommended.
"his domain of film scoring is legendary ~ Ennio Morricone".......2004-10-07
Silva America once again has outdone themselves with "Once Upon A Time:The Essential Ennio Morricone Film Music Collection", a double disc collection worth their weight in GOLD! ~ Morricone creates visual moods for each film he scores...action, adventure, mystery, romance, sentimental and suspense...the list could go on.
Ennio Morricone was born in Rome on October 11, 1928...attended the Santa Cecilia Conservatory...worked in various jazz bands, later a staff arranger and composer...an orchestrator in the '50s...scored films in the early '60s, then the WESTERNS and his name became a household word in the film industry ~ a new kind of western was on the horizon and Morricone was commissioned to score "A FISTFUL OF DOLLARS" [1964] for Sergio Leone featuring Clint Eastwood, spaghetti westerns were born ~ next "FOR A FEW DOLLARS MORE" [1965] ~ and a bigger budget film "THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE UGLY" [1966], again featuring Clint Eastwood, Lee Van Cleef and a third Eli Wallach whose performance was magical to watch on the big screen ~ violence and revenge gives Morricone an opportunity to feature electric guitars, flutes and jew's harp blending with a non lyrical chorus mixed with brass, strings, percussion with full orchestration that simply took your breath away...example is "ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST" [1968], featuring Henry Fonda, Claudia Cardinale, Jason Robards and our hero Charles Bronson the mysterious harmonica player, director Sergio Leone's tribute to the American Western, pulled out all the stops ~ the Western was just a small part of Maestro Morricone's career, in the next paragraph take a gander of just what our icon of film music accomplished.
Our composer didn't stop there as "ONCE UPON A TIME IN AMERICA" [1984], featuring Robert De Niro, James Woods and Elizabeth McGovern, another Sergio Leone film..."THE MISSION" [1986], featuring Robert De Niro, Jeremy Irons and Aldan Quinn, is probably one of Morricone's crowning scores receiving an Academy Award nomination, very haunting and classical genre in substance..."THE UNTOUCHABLES" [1987], featuring Kevin Costner, Sean Connery and Robert De Niro during the Al Capone '30s crime organization, Morricone conjures a powerful and dynamic arrangement of his unmistakable theme..."CINEMA PARADISO" [1988], featuring Phillippe Noiret, Antonella Attili and Pupella Maggio from director Giuseppe Tomatore as he recalls his early childhood, the score immediately captures your heart, so tender and compelling as Morricone can only deliver.
City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra featuring conductors Kenneth Alwyn, Paul Bateman, James Fitzpatrick, Nic Raine, Derek Wadsworth ~ Crouch End Festival Chorus featuring Choir Master David Temple ~ vocals performed by Charlotte Kinder, Marie Kopecka and Jill Washington ~ guitar, percussion and keyboards performed by Gareth Williams ~ all in all did a magnicent job in bringing the music of a composer who wrote for over 250 films, receiving recognition from the industry and fans which was long over-due ~ his work is in constant demand, scoring as many as over a half dozen films as year.
This collection contains an overlay of each cue in Morricone's distinctive style of legendary scoring ~ the man who made this possible, a tremendous asset to every project he undertakes is James Fitzpatrick [producer of the album] ~ symphonic suites with full orchestra fullfilling the "film-score-buffs" cravings for more of the same, just the way we like 'em!

Simply put, LaVern Baker, one of the greatest vocalists in Atlantic Records' history, could sing anything, as she proved again and again during a seven-year run of chart hits that began with 1955's "Tweedle Dee" and culminated in 1963's "See See Rider." Her material, supplied by many of the era's greatest songwriters (Leiber-Stoller, Pomus-Shuman, and many others), encouraged her to draw on her gospel and big band backgrounds in exploring the emotional subtext of serious ruminations on life such as "Saved" and the powerful "Soul on Fire." The latter was her first Atlantic single, and on it she used virtually every vocal technique at her command to bring out the slow-burning sensuality of the Ahmet Ertegun-penned gem of erotic longing. Thus was notice served, and, in the glorious years that followed, Baker cut a swath wide enough that her name and label-mate Ruth Brown's were spoken in the same reverent terms, sotto voce. The 20 tracks here remain as vital today as they were indispensable to the music's evolution in her own time. --David McGee
Customer Reviews:
A R&R/R&B Legend.......2007-07-26
One of the great advantages to having become a teenager in the early 1950s is the fact that, by having lived through the birth of R&R, you can look back and give an honest, unbiased opinion as to who constituted the wheat and who made up the chaff.
Let's face it, the early days of R&R were male dominated, and when you get right down to it, only three women were able to consistently hold their own on the charts in those days with the likes of Little Richard, Chuck Berry, Fats Domino, Elvis, Pat Boone, Jerry Lee Lewis, and The Everly Brothers. They were Connie Francis, Brenda Lee, and LaVern Baker.
Born Delores Williams on November 11, 1929 in Chicago, her first record releases came in 1951 on Columbia's Okeh subsidiary when she was billed as Bea Baker and, later that same year, as "Little Miss Sharecropper" on the National label. In 1952 she took the name LaVern Baker while performing with Todd Rhodes & His Orchestra, and her success there led to a contract with the fledgling Atlantic Records. Her first release, Soul On Fire - fittingly the title for this CD - was written by the label's legendary founder Ahmet Ertegun, and while it didn't chart in either the R&B or pop Top 40 when released in late 1953, that would change in 1955.
In January that year, with her back-up group The Gliders, she released the bouncy Tweedlee Dee which, b/w the soulful Tomorrow Night [an Elvis favorite] went to # 4 R&B and # 14 pop. And although it was outsold in the latter market by a rushed-out Georgia Gibbs cover, the buying public would not let that happen again. From there to her last big charted hit in 1966, no one dared cover her again.
Of her 21 charted R&B and pop hits, 15 are included here, with the only missing gems being Tra La La (1956), It's So Fine (1958), So High So Low and Tiny Tim from 1959, 1965's Fly Me To The Moon and, from 1966 while with Brunswick Records, the duet with Jackie Wilson, Think Twice.
LaVern, who sadly passed away at age 67 in 1997, did get to see her name enshrined in the R&R Hall of Fame in 1991, thereby correcting a five year oversight [she should have been selected with the first inductees in 1986]. In any event, this is one CD you MUST have if you want an appreciation of one of the top three most influential female artists of Rock's early days. And while you're at it, search out the fabulous LP LaVern Baker Sings Bessie Smith.
Beautiful LaVern.......2007-05-27
Not only was she great in every way these other reviews say, she was a very beautiful lady on the outside and inside. The only place I had to hear her when I was a teenager was at a mainly "blacks" cafe on the "down" end of the town I grew up in. There were no "black" radio stations then in my hometown. My closest friend and I could sometimes get a far off radio station that played this kind of music, but we'd slip off and go to this cafe (Miles' Cafe) after high school let out. I can't remember what we used as an excuse as to why we were late getting home from school. (Parents cared in those days, but would not have approved of our going in to "that" cafe.) I'm so glad I ran across this album on Amazon. Well, Amazon actually recommended it to me. Thanks Amazon. I remember most of these songs. Oh, I graduated from high school in 1957.
Lavern Baker - Absolutely Awesome!!!.......2006-03-10
I thought I would never get to hear "My Happiness" or "Shake A Hand" again, but was thrilled when I found them. This CD is one of my most prized possessions! It's totally awesome!
She sings of love like she's been there.......2006-03-08
With a soul inspired by love how can She go wrong? I should have said "She'll never be out of love", becuase it's obvious to me She's in love with the Lord of Lords. And Atlantic found her popularity was in her style. Her lyrics told of the king of kings without coming accross as a hymn. A lifestyle that's in "shake a hand" Is in my opinion inspired from Jesus' teachings, and comes accross as love thy neighbor. So with great enthusiasm she sings of her feelings for God and many are fooled in thinking she sings this way of men. A spirit so inspired is rare in music, and even more so if only men have made her feel this way.
