3 out of 5 stars Good Disc, But Their Better Days Were Already Behind Them.......2006-05-03

Ex-Fludd bassist Greg Godovitz's power trio follow up the classic "An Act Of Goddo" with this rather tepid release. This disc is best known for containing the band's highest-charting single (in Canada, anyway) called, coincidentally enough, "Pretty Bad Boys". By this time the band was running on a mixture of drugs, sex, egos, were leaking money faster than Enron, and it shows in the writing. Greg Godovitz seems to turn away from the intense, gritty rock'n'roll that fans of the band had come to love, and it sounds like there was a concerted effort made to make this album sound more "pop" (read: commercial) than the last three had been. This was the disc that was supposed to get the group noticed in the States, but it was a commercial disappointment and it became obvious that the band had already peaked.

All that aside, this album still has its high points. "Feelin Strange Today" has a great groove, and the title track has a hook that still has it in rotation on Canadian radio stations to this day. "Let's Talk It Over" proves that Godovitz's biggest influence was the Beatles, as the pop hook and three-part harmonies soon attest to.

5 out of 5 stars Underrated Canadian Band.......2006-08-16

One of the most underrated Canadian bands from Toronto. This is by far their best album. I wore it out when I had an LP of it. It is still one of my favorite albums of all time.

3 out of 5 stars Goddo "Who Cares".......2004-06-25

I saw this group live and bought this album in the late 70's and they were great. Although I was young and my tastes were not as keen then and I liked recreational substances I still recommend this hard rockin anthem band. "Carol Kiss my Whip" is a poke of fun at Carol Pope the Canadian Butch punk rocker of that era.
Many tracks in this CD with hardly a breather between cuts.

4 out of 5 stars The Transformation Continues.......2006-05-04

Admittedly, Greg Godovitz's biggest musical influence was the Beatles, and that influence continues to become more prevalent as he matures. While the pulse-pounding rock songs tend to be the vehicles that best display their F-you, sarcastic attitude, there tend to be less of these songs on their newer albums. While the "Goddo sound" of old has been linked to Canadian anthems like "Sweet Thing", (Carole) Kiss My Whip", and "So Walk On", the "new" Goddo sound has much less of an edge and relies more on melody and three-part harmonies. That being said, this album begins with a bit of a throwback to classic Goddo - "Was It Somethin' I Said?" would not be out of place on any one of their first three albums, and lines like "you always figured you were too good, baby, so I took you down a peg or two. I just assumed that you would realize what a man like me could do" is caustic Greg Godovitz at his snotty best.

Still, the pace of the album fades after that, and although there is some good writing here Goddo fans from the early `80s are going to be disappointed if they're looking for a repeat of the first three albums. This is a definite departure, first hinted at in "Pretty Bad Boys", but manifested here in a big way. "Mirror Mirror" and "Dreams Of New York City" are pure blues, and "Lost Without Your Love" sounds more Motown than Lionel Richie. The album finishes strong, though. "Egypt" is somewhat unusual and brings the album back into the rock'n'roll vein, the final two cuts stay high-tempo and even if they don't have the edge of earlier Goddo work, they certainly have catchy hooks. Overall I think this is a stronger effort than "Pretty Bad Boys", but it's missing the "killer single" that PBB had.

2 out of 5 stars First, the title is mistaken.......2004-06-19

This is not a 'best of' or compilation in any way, despite the listing and despite the words 'produced and compiled by' on my copy. The actual title does not include that phrase. ['BEST OF']

Goddo does have a lot of great material, but unfortunately, this disc only has one very good song: the single, Was It Somethin' I Said, which captures both their sound and their sort of sneery attitude perfectly. The disc actually has 3 tracks less than the original release of it, which I bought in July 1992 after winning tickets to see them in a bar. By the way, I've seen them in various settings, and a bar is the way to see them, in the front.

The 3 missing tracks are "Just Don't Know", "The Quest", and a cover of the Beatles' "You Can't Do That", which *was* the only other good song on here.

If you want a good start, buy 12 Gauge Goddo which also has Was It Somethin' I Said and actually came out before KOBH.

Greg, Gino, Doug: sorry to dis your work. I hope Kings of the Stoned Age is better, everything else was.

5 out of 5 stars Their Best - A Must Have For Rock Fans.......2006-05-03

Ex-Fludd bassist Greg Godovitz's power trio produce their best work. Written and released at the height of their popularity, this album encompasses everything from classical (no, that's not a misprint) to pulse-pounding rock, to sax-driven blues.

The album begins somewhat delicately with the Godovitz-composed "Anacanapanacana", a classical piece mirroring passages from several of the "mainstream" songs on the album, before plunging headlong into "So Walk On", what may very well be the best Canadian rock song ever written. The album suddenly hits the brakes for the ballad "Chantal", then accelerates once again through "You're So Cruel" and "Verdict's In". "Sign On The Line" is a broadside against record company executives and lawyers ("...you can't deal with record execu-jives"). "Rosie (Just Hang On") is a rocking ode to Godovitz's live-in girlfriend at the time.

This album may not contain their best-known commercial single (see "Pretty Bad Boys"), but it contains their best body of work. The production is pleasingly spartan, not relying on a plethora of overdubs and remixes. In his book "Travels With My Amp", Godovitz relates how it took an increasingly liquored-up sixteen-piece orchestra several hours to finally nail "Anacanapanacana" - I, for one, believe the liquor adds to the feel.
