This double-disc, all-covers release could come to represent a vital turning point for Metallica. While disc 2 is a straightforward collection of every cover the group have recorded in its 16-year history, disc 1 comprises 11 new selections drawn from the oeuvres of such exciting and diverse artists as U.K. punks Discharge and nefarious Australian Nick Cave. The heavier songs, such as the Mercyful Fate medley, Black Sabbath's "Sabbra Cadabra," and the Misfits' "Die Die My Darling," prove that nobody delivers a crunching riff better than these metal veterans. But it is vocalist-guitarist James Hetfields's confident approach toward the likes of Cave's "Loverman" and Bob Seger's "Turn the Page" that delivers the most electricity; here his raw, heartfelt vocals are largely untouched. Given that the recharged group spent only three weeks in the studio recording these tracks, it appears that these guys have remembered the value of studio spontaneity over laborious pontificating. The Last Great Metallica Album?.......2007-07-23

In 1998, after the combined commercial success and critical (or fanatical) failure of "Load"/"Reload," Metallica once again took the dive and made another bizarre career move: Recording a covers album. Two discs: The first, of "new" covers. The second, a collection of covers the band had recorded and released sporadically through the years, compiled on one disc. Although it may not have taken the men of Metallica much time or effort to churn out "Garage Inc.," it all sounds so natural and rocks harder than much of the "Load"/"Reload" material, and anything else they have recorded since.

Firs things first: The first disc. Disc one is home to not only the two memorable Metallica singles of the time, "Turn The Page" and "Whiskey In The Jar," but also a few well-known tunes ("Tuesday's Gone," "Sabbara Cadabra") and quite a few obscurities. If you've never heard Blue Oyster Cult's "Astronomy" or any of the four Mercyful Fate tracks that they pack into the medley of the same name, you'd almost think Metallica had recharged their batteries and come up with their best material since The Black Album. Since most of the album is about applying the Metallica trademark to songs that were great already, it's only a bonus that they do some experimenting along the way. Ever wondered what Metallica would sound like if they went industrial? Take a listen to Discharge's "Free Speech For The Dumb." Likewise, their take on Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Tuesday's Gone" isn't so much a cover tune as it is a full fledged jam session with members of Primus, Faith No More, Corrosion Of Conformity and Alice In Chains. Most rewarding, however, is the fact that Metallica have transformed so many of these songs so well, that when you hear the originals again, you'll yearn for the Metallica version instead.

The second disc, a little more obscure than the first, is still home to some solid material. Queen's "Stone Cold Crazy" is perhaps the cream of the crop, as it's interesting to hear James Hetfield's take on a Freddie Mercury track. The Misfits' "Last Caress" gets some beefing up, and the set closes with four, count 'em, four delicious Motorhead covers. Although the material on disc two isn't always up to the quality or the noteability of the first, it's a great gift to the fans and compliments the first disc quite well. "Garage Inc." is simply an album that has an inifinite shelf-life. Metallica will always rock, and their best material will always sound good and transcend whatever genre is popular at the moment. And the fact that they turned a cover album into such a noteworthy piece of music speaks volumes about their talent. It's just too bad they haven't applied that know-how to some of their more recent material. Until they prove otherwise, "Garage Inc." is their last great album.

So what.......2007-04-18

There is very few artist that can cover songs and make them just as good or better then the orignals. Metallica falls in between. I thought there playing on the cd could have been better. What is with Lars in the booklet looking like Bam from Viva La Bam anyways? Did Bam steal the look from Lars? I love Motorhead and I thought the covers for those songs were terriable. So What is probably my faviorte track on this whole collection.

So Metallica decided to record an album of covers to pay homage to some of thier idols, and once again their fans had the nerve to say they sold out....again. This is what the tenth time they sold out supposedly. Everyone wants to make an album of covers becuase you start out playing music to learn to play songs you love, and somebody made you want to play those songs. Metallicas roots being in classic hard rock, early metal, punk, and the new wave of British heavy metal you would think thats what they would cover, and they do but also throw other genres in for good measure like R&B, and Southern Rock. Discharge, Diamond Head, Black Sabbath, Bob Seger, The Misfits, The Bad Seeds, Mercyful Fate, Blue Oyster Cult, Thin Lizzy, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Holocaust, Killing Joke, Budgie, Blitzkrieg, Queen, Anti-nowhere League, Sweet Savage, and Motorhead are all covered on this album. I just wish they would have covered an Aerosmith song since all the members of Metallica say they are one of their greatest influences.

Disc one contains new recordings the band had made for the album in 1998. Disc two contains their Garage Days Re-revisited from 1987. It also contains Garage Days revisited from 1984. B-sides from 1988-1991. And finally the Motorheadache from 1995.

Songs like 'Its Electric' form Diamond Head and 'Die, Die My Darling' from Misfits are done so good at times I do think they may be better then the original. The bands cover of Thin Lizzy's 'Whiskey In The Jar' completly owns the original. Easily the best version of the song, and actually the band scored a minor hit with the song as well. The odd cover of 'Tuesdays Gone' by Lynyrd Skynyrd while out of place is none the less a great cover that the band pulls of flawlessly. With John Popper of Blues Travaler on harmonica the song is a sure win. Bob Seger And The Silver Bullet Bands 'Turn The Page' is done wonderfuly. The use of guitar instead of saxophone was a nice touch and original, but the bands video adaptation of it being about a stripper is aweful, the song is about a struggling musician trying to make it in the early 1970s. 'Breadfan' totally owns the original and is NOW a metallica classic. The band won a grammy for their cover of Queens 'Stone Cold Crazy.' They did it better then Queen did with the exception of the vocals for obvious reasons. All the Motorhead covers are done well. It is clear that they all use to play a lot of Motorhead. 'Last Caress/Green Hell' are both killer Misfits songs originaly but Metallica seem to even manage to make them better.

None of the authanticity is taken away from the songs when the band covers them. They do them all justice and I am sure that all the originators of the songs would be proud to have a band of Metallicas stature cover their material. This was the last great thing we heard from Metallica before they started to get full of themselves. I will never say Metallica sold out because they didnt. But they are very full of their own opnions and as long as they are making music they care about I will continue to support them beucase I am at heart a true Metallica fan.

A glimmer of hope..........2007-02-03

This was released in the middle of the Load-ReLoad period, and it proved to me that Metallica can still be great if they want to. It may be all covers, but it still rocks. At least they are still capable of remembering what "heavy metal" is, and where they came from. Of course, they followed this up with S&M which pretty much sucked (except "Puppets" sounds really good on that album) then St. Anger, which was the bottom. If Rick Rubin can re-awaken the metal monster in the band, then we may be in for more original music like this.

My son has the entire Metallica collection except for the one I purchased.
We were having a hard time finding it in the stores. I was very pleased with the quick service, but believe me, he was a lot happier than I was!

Like many bands anthologized on the original "Nuggets" double-LP, Chicago's Cryan' Shames (whose cover of "Sugar & Spice" was on Lenny Kaye's seminal garage rock anthology) have a higher national profile now than at the time of their incarnation. This is, after all, a band with no national hits. Their 1966 debut LP (available on a separate CD reissue) was filled out with covers, and heavily indebted to both the British invasion and the burgeoning folk-rock scene.

This 1967 sophomore release pushes more towards California, with light-psych and dollops of sunshine pop. The opener, for example, takes in both the moodiness of the Beach Boys' "Pet Sounds" and the bright harmonies of Curt Boettcher and The Association. Similarly, "In the Café" vacillates between Byrdsian folk-rock and pop-jazz vocal chordings, while "Mr. Unreliable" adds Revolver-era rhythm guitar to a darker mix of harmonies. Aside from a mainstream, harmony-laden and stagey cover of The Drifters' "Up on the Roof" (which sounds like a hip version of The Lettermen), the album's tracks are all originals, including the light psych drone of "The Sailing Ship," and vocal wash breakdown "The Town I'd Like to Go Back to."

The Beach Boys summertime influences come on strong for the lush "It Could Be We're in Love," as does the driving Byrds sound for "Sunshine Psalm." Everything here is melodic, well produced and likable, but the tug of the group's multiple influences keeps this from growing into anything truly original. Sundazed's CD reissue adds seven tracks to the original album, including five mono single versions, and a pair of mono sides ("Young Birds Fly" and "The Warm") from a follow-on single; the album itself is reproduced in true original stereo.

For the many who know The Cryan' Shames only from their one-off appearance on "Nuggets," it's interesting to hear the high-quality, if not tremendous originality, of their mid-period work. But with the catalogs of their myriad influences readily available, there are better places to start listening to lite-psych and sunshine pop. 3-1/2 stars, if allowed fractional ratings. For anyone who appreciates the artistry of a rock band at their most artistic, creative zenith, this CD is for you. The lyrics are intelligent, the vocals are stunning, the instrumentation is magnificent, and the vast majority of the material is original. If you enjoy folk (The Warm), hard rock (Dennis Dupree), country (Cobblestone Road), lovely ballads (I Was Lonely When), socially-significant lyrics (Mr. Unreliable), and stunning poetry sung aloud (James Fairs) "The Warm", this is the one for you. If a gene-splicing experiment between SGT. Pepper and Brian Wilson's Pet Sounds had occurred, A Scratch In the Sky would be the result. I genuinely believe this is the best CD recorded in the history of rock music.

An incredible, timeless album from Chicagos finest band.......2005-05-29

This 1967 offering from Chicagos finest band easily outmatches anything up to this point in time...even The Beatles Sgt Pepper..not only in composition, musicianship and recording quality/techniques...but the fact it is timeless....You wont find and drug references here....Just a down to earth, sincere musical effort by 6 extremely talented guys who truly loved what they did.

It is a tragedy that Columbia didn't venture more advertising budget into this band.....They had Americas answer to The Beatles and didn't do anything about it.

Buy this CD...and sit back and remember back to 1967 (if you're old enough to)...and think about everything that had been recorded to that point in time...and see if you dont agree....this was truly an overlooked masterpiece.

One of the most influential garage bands from my home State of Illinois. These guys were very underated, their harmonies,lyrics a class act. Its been more than 40 years and I still listen to their music, my children love them also. NG/South Beach

WE WANT "WHERE THE ACTION IS" & "HAPPENING 67/68/69/& 70" ON DVD SO GET DCP & ABC TO RELEASE THESE! Anyway: Steppin' Out jams! A remake of I'll Be Doggone, a fun tune called Outta Site/then a remake: Baby Please Don't Go/An instro(remake) of Night Train. S.2 has Just Like Me(sans back up)Then a remake of Dylan's Catch the Wind. A terrific remake of Satisfaction!Then a redo of I'm Crying. Paul blares out the remake of New Orleans & then the short & sweet ACTION Theme song. Confidentially, I believe these redos are some of the BEST & it'll take you back to a simpler time which I wish would return! BTW: the CD has added trax: Ride Your Pony/Just Like Me(45) & B.F.D.R.F. Blues not what Amazon wrote! A B side 45.

Where the Action Is.......2007-05-13

Although "Where the Action Is" episodes have not been released on DVD, Just Like Us captures the energy and enthusiasm of the band that made the TV show a hit for over two years. Sometimes known as the classic group of Raiders, Paul, Mark, Fang, Drake and Smitty all shared in the vocals and writing of the original tunes. They also do some fantastic covers like they would perform on the "Where the Action Is" TV shows. So, until the TV show is released in DVD, I highly recommend this album while you are awaiting by the DVD bins in the department stores.

Just Like Me to Rave About This Collection!.......2006-02-20

Gear up that 1965 Dodge Coronet 500 and cruise past the cool garage in the Pacific Northwest where Paul Revere & the Raiders launched their cool career. This is an excellent collection of classics and cover versions of other classics and 60s hounds will undoubtedly love it.

The Raiders' heyday of 1965-1967 ran alongside that of other cool garage bands that made it big such as the Sonics with their runaway train, "Have Love Will Travel." Their Pacific Northwestern Peers, the Sonics and the Raiders will certainly have you wanting to jump into your very cool 1965 Dodge Coronet with your satellite set to the Cool Oldies. You will love Drake's incredible guitar style; the folk influence in songs such as "Catch the Wind" and the high powered rock that was a staple in 60s garage band music. You will probably start to dance when you hear "Just Like Me," a 1965 gem that is well loved to this day.

Yes, you do want this collection of timeless classics and you will certainly be glad you have it. Now get that Coronet ready with your cool dial set to songs like this! I just love this collection!

JUST LIKE US!.......2005-07-18

This is truly a 60's Rock album which you just have to love!! It includes their hit singles Steppin Out and Just like Me!! I have always said that the song Just Like Me!! really shows off Mark Lindsay's unbelieveable voice!! The Album also includes the title song from their 1960's tv show Where The Action Is!!!

Paul Revere and The Raiders...What can I say. These guys still rock. I saw Paul about 2 years ago in Shreveport and Mark Lindsay just this year (2002). Still rockin'. Just Like Us is the most energetic, fun classic party rock album I have ever heard. This is the best!

Fantasmorific 60s obscurity........2007-06-26

The second volume in Sundazed Records' series of garage rock compilations is a twenty-track joy, a disc that no garage fan can afford to pass up. The songs are tough, tight, and energetic, anchored around angry teenage vocalists, moaning electric organs, and exhilleratingly crude guitar chords. The whole collection is positively driping with the basic essentials of rock n roll: unrestrained sexual frustration, unhinged excitement, and an unapologetically self-styled sense of cool. It really is a life force.

Anyway, the best songs include a salivating groin-grinder courtesy of the Things to Come (I don't know if their name is supposed to be an innuendo, but I sure hope it is) entitled "Sweetgina," as well as the Mad Hatters' soulful, grooving "Chicks are for Kids," and the Bold's pounding, snarling, flailing "Gotta Get Some." The Jynx do a creeping, understated (sorta) take on Van Morrison's "Little Girl," and the Ugly Ducklings transform the Bo Diddly-penned "I'm A Man" into a five-minute instrumental meltdown that rocks somethin' mighty. The Menn sound bitter and restless on the excellent "Things to Come" (no, it has nothing to do with the band that did "Sweetgina!"), and the Gestures' "I'm Not Mad" is a great harmonica-driven tune. There are also a few (relatively) obscure from more (relatively) well-known bands: The Guess Who's "Believe Me" is a pounding anthem with a killer electric piano solo, and the Sonics' "You Got Your Head on Backwards" is a mean little blues-rocker with a greased-up guitar line, and Boston's legendary Remains are represented by a raw, relentless demo recording of their classic "Why Do I Cry" that goes some way toward explaining their reputation as incredible live performers. The Litter (known for their brutal classic "Action Woman") turn in a tight, searing little ditty entitled "Whatcha Gonna Do About It."

And there's more where that came from! Pick this disc up and crank everything up to 10- you'll have a blast!

'Garage Beat '66,Vol.2: Chicks Are For Kids' (Sundazed) Various Artists.......2007-01-28

I'll tell you something right here and right now.Don't believe I'll ever run short of 'undiscovered' audio gems like this various artists CD title. I've gotten CD's on the Sundazed label before, but I've never even heard of this CD before. Total of twenty tracks from mostly little known / way-under appreciated bands like The Bold, The Gestures, The Remains, The Concepts and Spiders (Alice Cooper's early band) as well as a few better known psych / classic rock acts like Guess Who, Barbarians, The Sonics and Five Americans. Guaranteed to have any party of aging hipsters shaking their shimmies back and forth (supporting they still have them). Most highly recommended.

I recently acquired all 7 of these Garage Beat '66s. The sound quality is right up there with the 1998 Nuggets re-release, in other words, as good as it gets. Upon first listen, their allure may prove elusive. However, just like with nuggets, the second listen and every subsequent listen rewards the listener, exponentially. These gems grow on you like a Green Fuzz. You'll be walking around hearing voices, green and purple. I'm so much more comfortable with the snotty sixties than that peace and love bunk. Long live garage rock

I give this 4 1/2 stars. Another twenty track various artists CD collection of those super-obscure never-heard-of psych and garage bands, on the Sundazed label. Tunes I simply couldn't get enough of were Fever Tree's-"I Can Beat Your Drum", the Sparkle's "Hipsville 29 B.C." (also like The Cramps version), the sort of Jefferson Airplane-like The Kreeg's "Impressing", Odyssey's catch "Little Girl,Little Boy", Five Of Us gem "Hey You" (brilliant name,huh?) and the jammin' Just Two Guy's "Eyes" (possibly the disc's best cut). Essential.

The Beat Goes ON!.......2006-09-04

This is the first of five volumes in the Garage Beat '66 series and it is awesome. This series first caught my eye in my local indie record shop and after seeing it for a while, I broke down and bought all five volumes. It was worth it needless to say. I had listened to my Nuggets sets forever and was wanting a great way of expanding my collection of the 60's no-hit wonders and this was perfect. This collection offers a great variety of garage-psych-blues-Yardbirds/Stones-wannabes and much more. The recordings are fantastic, often sourcing original masters and producing a much higher fidelity to the originals than other collections have. Plus it is released from Sundazed who seems to have taken the mantel of maverick upstart releasing great old material from Rhino. Overall, I rate this collection very highly because it does offer a great selection of regional bands as well as those few that managed some chart action. Furthermore, the liner notes are detailed. That might not mean much to some people but that was huge for me when I opened this set up and had some background to peruse on each band as I listened to the music. You can't go wrong with the Garage Beat unless you just can't turn it up enough.

This is the cure for boring prefab pap. This is the ultimate way to clean out your speakers of any dust that may have accumulated. Heck, this is probably the cure for cancer! Like it says, 20 Garage rock singles too extreme for 1966, from the master tapes, sound quality is GREAT! If you have the Nuggets box, or any of the Pebbles collections, you need this right away and quickly! For the first timer, this is a good way to get into the Garage Rock scene. LIKE, WHAT ME WORRY? HAHA HA!

Some Great Garage Marred by Inclusion of Psych Crap.......2007-07-27

This series has been pretty good for the most part, though nothing approaching the greatness of "Back From the Grave" and the better volumes of "Teenage Shutdown". This is worth getting for the Unrelated Segments and Tidal Wave tracks, but caveat emptor, a bad third of this volume is psych crap, which never belongs on a Garage comp in my opinion.

First decent garage album since Back From the Grave series.......2007-01-02

I haven't heard any other CD's in this series yet, but if I had to pass judgment based on 'Readin' your Will', I'd say that this is right up there with the legendary (and still best series of all) Back from the Grave.
There are a lot of obscure tracks on here that don't appear on other anthologies. The sound quality is very good, and the originality of the tunes is great overall.
You really have to be an aficionado of the genre: these are not your typical oldies, nor is this psychedelia (for the most part.)

Garage, or early punk, as it's also known, is a genre unto itself, a sound born out of guitar driven bands that tried to emulate the sound of the Kinks, the Who, the Rolling Stones and so on, and did it with more raw emotion, more energy and more emotion than any of the original bands. They practiced in their parents' and friends' parents' garages, and sometimes their ineptitude shows. You won't find a lack of enthusiasm though, and they energy conveyed is what makes me want to crank this three-chord goodness at eleven, hoping to annoy the neighbors with their easy listening!

This music is anything but boring. Offensive to some, and it might make your ears bleed. But dull, never.
I recommend the Nuchez (Open Up Your Mind), The Human Expression (Readin' Your Will), Silk Winged Alliance (Flashback), and Morning Dew (No More) for guitars that fuzz and drone, and other power-chord goodness.

Ever since the absolute Nirvana of Garage known as Back From the Grave, labels have been producing positively mediocre, dull, uninspired Sixties 'punk'-lite. This, to me, however sounds like the real deal, with a minimum of flower-pop or psychedelia, just mostly rock/rock 'n' roll.
Highly recommended.
