The Complete Piano Music of Scott Joplin.......2007-06-08
John Arpin does a great job with these pieces. The songs carry a consistent sound and are played very close to as-written, which comes and goes with old ragtime pieces. The stamping on Stop-Time Rag doesn't have a consistent sound to it, can be a little distracting. Everything else is great, overall I think that it's a great buy, I'm very happy with it.
Another Performer Rewrites Joplin's Masterpieces.......2007-05-31
Once again, another performer feels the need to rewrite the music of the King of Ragtime. Scott Joplin spins in his grave each and every time this recording is played.
Again, to those who believe that concert music is meant to be rewritten by each and every performer I ask, is the same treatment also acceptable for Chopin's and Rachmaninoff's music? Would "Moonlight Sonata" sound better if played at twice the tempo and with a reprise of the first Adagio movement thrown in at the end? Obviously, the answer to these questions is a resounding NO!, so why does one of America's greatest composers get such disrespect?
Interpretation is an integral part of every performance. Adding one's own notes, phrases and chords where none should be is not. Randomly changing the structure of the piece is not. Playing a piece at twice the indicated tempo is not.
One the plus side, the depth of this collection is outstanding. Joplin's lesser known pieces like "Harmony Club Waltz" really shine. The recording is decent in quality, although a bit bassy in places.
While its been stated before, I feel its worth repeating: Buy Joshua Rifkin's performances of Joplin in order to hear how the Master intended his pieces to sound.
complete piano music of Scott Joplin on 4 CD's.......2007-02-14
Although all of the music is terrific it is rather a lot of a similar sound. I think I would have preferred 2 CD's of selected piano works of Scott Joplin. But I did get the music at a good price.
Ragtime Marvel.......2005-10-09
This collection of Scott Joplin's piano music is outstanding. As a lover of ragtime which was a prelude to jazz, I am thoroughly enjoying this collection. If you are not a lover of jazz, you may be a lover of ragtime. Jazz can sometimes be grating on the nerves, whereas ragtime lifts the spirit.
Complete, but poor quality.......2005-09-25
I have been learning some ragtime and wanted to hear more to find other selections to learn. Listened to Maple Leaf Rag, my favorite, first and was disappointed. Listened to others and was more disappointed. Maple flies - much faster than anyone would play it, you can't make out some of the phrases. And talk about ad libs - Tempo, dynamics, embelishments, nuances - I really think he plays some wrong notes too because he's going so fast. It's really a poor recording - and that's just on Maple Leaf. Others with "intros" start quick and then there's a grand pause, not a rest, but nearly a five second break. It's hard to argue how Joplin would have played it, but this is hardly anything I want to try to imitate. The only qualitating factor is the number of songs for the price. A lot of variety of a poor interpretation is only worth 3 stars. if that. Look for Rifkin or a copy that is as written to listen to first, then go for the ad libs and "artistic interpretations"

Scott and I Smile.......2007-08-01
Rich, yet not cloying
Aggressive, yet reflective
Bouncy, yet wistfully romantic
Robert Strickland transports the soul of Scott Joplin's Ragtime
Scott and I smile.
What the heck???.......2007-03-20
Music is great, as is the playing. However, the last song is not Magnetic Rag but rather the same version of Maple Leaf Rag heard earlier on the album.
What is with that?
More Than Excellent.......2006-08-16
I had previously purchased a Scott Joplin CD and was disappointed by the dull quality and dispirited playing by the artist. This CD more than makes up for it. The music was beautifully performed and the recording was very clear. Every piece was perfect!

Not One Mediocre Song..........2007-05-27
Quick story: I went to see Deb Talan (one half of this incredible singing team) on purpose at a little dive in Los Angeles that tends to have cool new music now and again, after hearing her song at the end of the movie "Lovely and Amazing." The first singer performed and was just great but when Deb took the stage something different happened. She has this extraordinary lilting yet purposeful tone to her voice that makes you can't help but want to own everything she's recorded. But then she sang the song "You Turned Me Into Somebody Loved" and I lost it. She sang it straight and softly and I knew right then and there I would have to walk down the aisle at my wedding to that song. As luck would have it, I already had a fiancee and a wedding date, but the song wasn't out yet. So a fan on her website sent me a bootleg copy as long as I swore to buy the CD the second it came out.
Since its release, I've played it at least a thousand times, I love every song and I've turned so many friends on to it easily. All I have to do is have it playing in my car and inevitably someone will ask "who is this?"
I have yet in this review to mention Steve's voice which is incredibly gorgeous, moving, emotional and blends perfectly with Debs. The songs are quirky yet all melodic. Don't you hate quirky for the sake of quirky? I say, if there's it's not melodic I won't give it a second listen. So thanks guys. And now I must run and review your next CD.
Amazing, again!.......2007-03-14
I asked for, and got this older Weepies CD for Christmas, based on how much I enjoyed their 2006 release. I was not disappointed. The combination of surprising lyrics, weaving harmonies, and Taylor-like bounce, simply makes me happy. I sincerely look forward to their next production.
great, of course.......2006-03-08

Awesome to hear the old masters almost live........2007-03-27
It was an awesome experience to hear Ragtime and early blues played by the masters themselves. When you hear the music from their own hands, if not their own pianos, it makes the music immediate, and makes even clearer the stylistic differences of the various American musical pioneers. The sound quality is excellent. I'd strongly recommend this recording to anyone who enjoys early-20th-century jazz.
The Greatest Ragtime of the Century.......2005-10-30
What a terrific CD. What a joy to add to your life. Everyone should begin their day with this Great Ragtime. We would all be much better.
As a former dancer, Flapper, wth the Charleston in my routine, I do appreciate Great Music. I'm not quite as good as I used to be, but neither are you, Gal. Will be 66 next birthday. Still have the rhythm and love life.
Put some spice in your life and don't let this CD get away. Please, just get it today.
A great introduction and sampling........2005-08-23
Prior to this album, the only ragtime I really knew was "The Entertainer" and "Maple Leaf Rag". I don't know how this album fares for enthusiasts, but I've thoroughly enjoyed it. It introduced me to several different composers. The way the album is organized by giving you a two or three song block by each composer is good. As you listen to this, you can easily hear the different styles from one composer to another. As for the recording quality, I don't have any complaints whatsoever. Each note is clear without much noticable fuzz or hissing. The versions of Scott Joplin's songs are played a bit brash and speedy when compared to Joshua Rifkin, but I think they sound livlier because of it. Overall a solid release.

Customer Reviews:
Coppelia.......2007-07-27
I ordered two DVD versions of Coppelia along with this CD in order to learn the choreography from the ballet. My only complaint about this CD is that the music is considerably faster than either of the orchestras have played the score on the DVDs. This makes it difficult to learn the choreography with out slowing down the CD on a variable speed CD player.
A full-length Coppelia at an appealing price.......2003-06-26
Andrew Mogrelia has conducted a number of full-length ballets for Naxos: Giselle, Sylvia, Sleeping Beauty, and this Coppelia. I own all of them, because I find Mogrelia is one of those rare conductors who make a ballet sound like a ballet.
In concert hall versions, conductors often make ballet music impossibly fast, or simply too unpredictable. (Gergiev's Nutcracker is in this category: fun to listen to, definitely NOT a dancer's Nutcracker.) But when dancers are on stage, they need a regular, dependable beat to dance to. Mogrelia's Coppelia never sounds sing-song, because he uses dynamics so skillfully - but he does conduct at an authentic dance tempo.
Another Coppelia I like and own is Mark Ermler's (ASIN: B0000024CL), but while it's much more than highlights it is not the full ballet. The first act mazurka is missing, and that's a definite loss.
La Source is a bit of an oddity because it was originally commissioned as a sort of competition: half composed by Minkus, half by Delibes. Delibes was generally considered the winner, so he stayed in Paris while Minkus went off to Russia. This album is strictly Delibes, so it's only highlights from La Source. But it does include my favorite, the utterly charming Pas des Fleurs, Grande Valse.
Inspired ballet music at a bargain price........2002-07-13
Although I'm not particularly fond of watching ballets I have a special love for ballet music, and Coppelia is one of my favorites. It is the masterpiece of Leo Delibes who was one of the greatest of ballet composers. Even Tchaikovsky -- probably the greatest ballet composer of all -- greatly admired Delibes' work. This recording presents not only the complete music for Coppelia but also the lovely, but seldom-heard, music Delibes wrote for La Source -- both conducted by the excellent ballet conductor Andrew Mogrelia. And at a bargain price to boot. Please don't pass up this special treasure.
Superb Performance.......2000-08-27
I search for the recording for the complete Coppelia when my daughter's dance school was practicing for it. I found this item. Performance was meticulous. It was recorded in the Orchestra's concert hall over a period of almost two weeks. All digital recording. Well balanced orchestra. Fine details. A good item to collect.

nostalgic .......2006-12-28
When I was 22 years old, I was very much into this album, especially I loved their music, unison style scat, and cool chord. I went to listen their music bymyself but I especially want to write that I love myself in those days because I loved everyone and I was loved by everyone. But I cannot remained in those days without pain so that album is relief my pain. I might be love it forever.
Smoooooth............2005-10-13
Cool, steady jazz. Nice guitar based jazz with nothing over the top. Feels like a couple masters riding the velvet train. Nothing really proven here, just a comfirmation of how natural their abilities are.
2 Great Collabos in the Jazz Guitar genre.......2005-04-09
This is something you cannot miss out if u luv jazz or actually you like other music asides jazz. Trust me I first checked this out @ a library near Fulton County, GA and then bought it on tape right after just to feel any difference to it. This is a good album to start for all GB and EK fans. Yeah George and Earl are the baddest man. You know what I'm talkin' about? They can play everything from jazz, to R&B, to pop, to Latin you name it. This is one the best favorites I own even tho its a CLASSIC. I'll luv 4 them to rejoin and do another duet on their next CD. My goodness, it's been so long. I luv every song that's is really bangin and making me felling in luv with it. I'm a avid Jazz listener since the age of 13 in '97 and still luvin' it today more than I do r&b, rap, hip-hop, gospel and other music which I like.
Interesting blend of Benson and Klugh.......2001-12-16
I went gaga when this album first came out in 1987, because I'm a big fan of both George Benson and Earl Klugh. I was a little disappointed when I first listened to it because of my high expectations. But after a while I latched onto about half of the tunes on the album. My favorites are "Mimosa," "Since You're Gone," and "Jamaica;" they all have a great blend of Benson's and Klugh's signature styles, along with the fascinating sound of an electric jazz guitar played with an acoustic guitar.

Living room session.......2007-07-24
Before anything else is said, it is important to understand that this is a "living room session," recorded around a single microphone. It's something more than an off-the-cuff jam session, but definitely something less than a proper studio album. This is a pro in that you get a nice "live" kind of vibe, but a hugely frustrating con in the places where it's painfully obvious that they are not properly miked.
The music itself is beautiful. Simple as that.
This would be an amazing bootleg (and actually that's pretty much what it sounds like), but for a commercial release it shouldn't be too much to ask to hear everyone clearly.
best in show 2006.......2007-01-05
Okay, not even sure that it came out in 2006. However, that is when I first heard it, so that is what counts. I really hope they put out another album - even if it is only half as good as this one, it will be better than 95% of what I get to hear.
Buy it, burn it, steal it, whatever you have to do it is worth it.
Great Covers! And Great Originals Too!!.......2006-03-01
This band has a sweet tone mixed with a folk and blues style. They hit the grove on every track! Buckets of Rain is a great song and they pay quite a tribute to it with their eclectic style!
The Fun Is Contagious.......2005-07-14
Redbird's debut recording is a very sweet collaboration between Jeffrey Foucault, Kris Delmhorst & Peter Mulvey. While none of these artists is a household name, each has established an individual solo career and come together here with a blending of sound. Their collaborative work together is exquisite. While each is represented by at least one track that they penned, the emphasis is on the music. Part of the charm of the set is the diversity and range of songwriters whose material they perform. This was apparently recorded in Mark Olson's living room in Fort Atkinson WI & has an informal feel.
R.E.M.'s "You Are the Everything" is a bright acoustic flower, "I'm very scared for this world, I'm very scared for me, Eviscerate your memory." "Lighthouse Light" by Ry Cavanaugh is a dreamy folk melody with Kris' lovely alto, "There is light in the distance, It's coming in from the west, There is light in the distance, Thinking of the one that I love best." One of my favorite tracks is the gorgeous "Patience" written by Mark Sandman who was the lead singer for the band Morphine. Kris' delivery is stunning as she calls to allow for time to heal. "Moonglow" is a standard that Benny Goodman recorded in the 1930s and has been covered by jazz artists like Duke Ellington & Count Basie as well as female vocalists like Billie Holiday & Joni James with a new version on Carly Simon's soon-to-be-released "Moonlight Serenade" CD. Redbird's acoustic version has a jazz flavor but is recast as an intimate folk gem with all three voices blending, "I started praying, 'Dear Lord please let this last.'" Mitch Jayne was a member of the Dillards who recorded his song "The Whole World Round." Redbird's version has a bluegrass flavor and polishes his lovely melody. "Buckets of Rain" is a classic Dylan song with one of his best melodies and great lyrics that Redbird nail in this catchy quiet version. The set concludes with a version of a song Tom Waits penned & first recorded on his "Mule Variations" CD. This is an excellent acoustic folk set from a group that obviously is having a blast playing together. The fun is contagious. Enjoy!

One of WIlliams best!.......2007-01-18
I've had this collaboration for years, I first owned it on cassette and then bought the CD! It's been one of my favorites for a very long time and is our families vacation music, we never leave on a road trip without putting this CD in and putting on the first track from Indiana Jones. Some of Williams' best scores and some of Spielberg's best movies! I highly recommend it!
Setting the mark higher...........2005-10-18
What can you expect when you take the greatest director of this era and combine him with the greatest composer of all time ? A minimum of 10 stars...
The best director/composer team in film history............2003-11-07
For almost 30 years, since 1974's The Sugarland Express, John Williams' music has been associated with director Steven Spielberg's films. With the notable exception of The Color Purple (scored by Quincy Jones), Williams has composed the scores to all of Spielberg's films, including 2002's Minority Report and Catch Me If You Can.
The Spielberg/Williams Collaboration predates the bulk of Spielberg's post-1980s works. It covers 15 years (1974-89), or half of their collaborative years. Although some of the films represented in this 13-track compilation were not successful (1941, Always), Williams' music has proved to be well-received, both by concert audiences and music-store customers alike.
The album starts off with the rousing "Raiders March" from 1981's Raiders of the Lost Ark. This unforgettable signature theme came about when Williams presented Spielberg with two musical motifs for adventurer/archaeologist Indiana Jones. The director listened to them, and instead of choosing one, asked Williams, "Can't you use both?" The first idea became the main theme, while the second became the "bridge." Glorious and brassy, yet with a wink and a nod to the music from the 1930s and '40s serials that inspired the Indiana Jones trilogy, the Raiders March is one of the best-known movie themes ever. Later in the album, two other selections (Parade of the Slave Children from Temple of Doom and Scherzo for Motorcycle and Orchestra from The Last Crusade) round out the trilogy.
Adventures on Earth, from 1982's E.T., begins with music that mimics the fast-and-furious pedaling of bicycles, then segues into several different musical themes, including "Over the Moon" (which is reprised independently on track 9), "The Flying Theme," and the incidental music covering E.T.'s farewell to his young protectors, including Elliott. It ends triumphantly with a rendition of "The Flying Theme" and a triumphant fanfare heralding the aliens' spaceship return to the stars.
The Theme from Sugarland Express, Spielberg's first feature film, takes listeners to the wide-open expanses of Texas and features the talented Toots Thielemans on harmonica. It's very much in the vein of a Western, though the movie (which starred Goldie Hawn) took place in the late 1960s and was based on a true story.
Jaws, which put both Spielberg and Williams into blockbuster territory for the first time, is represented by three compositions: the famous "Theme," "Out to Sea," and the suspenseful "Shark Cage Fugue." They capture the primordial relentlessness of the great white shark, the optimism and excitement of the Orca's setting out on the hunt, and the frantic activity to get the shark cage put together as Chief Brody, Matt Hooper, and Quint confront the shark.
Exsultate Justi and Cadillac of the Skies from 1987's underappreciated Empire of the Sun highlight not only orchestral music but choral music performed by the American Boychoir and the Tanglewood Festival Chorus. Exsultate Justi is a joyous prayer of deliverance heard over the liberation of British and American civilians held in Japanese internment camps near Shanghai, while Cadillac of the Skies is a concert arrangement featuring incidental music, including the cue heard when Jamie, the film's protagonist, sees his first P-51 Mustang.
The Spielberg/Williams Collaboration ends with musical excerpts from 1977's Close Encounters of the Third Kind, starting with the eerie and atonal music of the title and evolving into the more melodic music heard during the awe-inspiring encounter between humanity and aliens. Featuring beautiful soaring thematic material, brief quotations from "When You Wish Upon a Star," and ending with the classic five-note Close Encounters motif, Williams' medley from Spielberg's UFO film shows the versatility of both director and composer, whose friendship and teamwork may not have always resulted in successful movies, but provided listeners with a treasure trove of wonderful film music that will endure for many years to come.
Great mix, unless you're wedded to the album versions.......2003-03-27
This is a good overview of the Williams/Spielberg music up to 1990, but the performances are often a bit different from the various soundtrack album versions. If like me, you've heard those so many times that they're a part of you, you may find these performances jarring. They may even be better, some feel so, but they're just not the same. Stil, the album is worth having if only because it contains the only commercially available music from The Sugarland Express.
A must for an introduction to Wiliams.......2002-10-29
Nice introduction CD to John Williams music from the 70's and 80's for someone thinking of getting into film scores. In my opinion, there should be a sequel to this CD already as williams has since worked many times with Williams on some wonderful scores (Jurassic park,Schindlers list,Minority report etc to name just a few). There are some truly wonderful performances of favourites here which even sound better than the original recordings IMO. The Parade of the Slave children from Temple of Doom comes to mind, and it just build and builds into a stunning exotic piece. Other performances of well known pieces like E.T's Adventures on Earth are in my opinion much weaker and slower than the originals and its tough to listen when you know the original so well. This CD has a wondful performance of Last Crusade's "Scherzo for motorcycle" and glorious fantastic performance of "Cadillac of the skies" from Empire of the Sun. I obtained this Cd a number of years ago and my love for williams talent has increased upwards ever since. Amazing composer.
Highly recommend you buy this.

Available at retailers for about $18.......2006-12-21
Excellent collection - but there are re-sellers listed here that are selling this for as much $50 or $60. Yikes, most major retailers are selling this complete set for $18 - so beware.
A classic compilation.......2006-10-07
This collection is one of my most treasured possessions. (My father gave me the original 5-album set in the 70's when it was originally released on vinyl.)
This is the definitive collection of Scott Joplin's work. Richard Zimmerman provides wonderful performances that accurately reflect Joplin's intentions. (As evidence beyond my personal opinion, I submit the recent releases of digital recordings made from Joplin's piano rolls.)
A few points to consider regarding negative comments you may encounter in other reviews:
* This is a digital recording from an analog master. Lack of quality in the recording does not imply a lackluster performance.
* This is a complete collection. Some similarity is due to Joplin re-exploring melodic themes. But some is due to the fact that these are "rags". One might as well complain that all 50's doo-wop (or all 70's disco) sounds the same.
* Many pieces of the period exhibit formal musical structures, such as the marches of John Phillips Sousa. (Both Sousa and Joplin performed at the 1904 World's Fair in St. Louis.) Actually, Joplin is responsible for extending the formal boundaries of ragtime to concert waltzes (Bethena) and opera (A Guest of Honor, Treemonisha)
* This is probably one of the few collections which will include selections from "Treemonisha". It is my understanding that after the initial release, one of Joplin's descendants made a copyright claim that was upheld in court. (I presume the issue was that Joplin had to finance "Treemonisha" himself, and therefore the customary performance clearances did not cover those selections.)
For ragtime students and enthusiasts, this is a "must-have" collection at a very affordable price.
A dis-service to Joplin.......2006-02-01
Sadly, the only virtue this set possesses is completeness.
The pianist does not play Joplin's pieces "as written", the piano is of poor quality, and not properly in tune.
This is emphatically NOT the set to buy. A far better set, beautifully annotated and well played on a good concert grand piano, is the complete works played by Guido Nielsen on the Basta Label.
This set is a dis-service to Joplin and his music. He deserves better, and gets it elsewhere.
Unique .......2004-10-19
I have several cd sets of Joplin's music: Rifkin, Arpo, Nielsen, and Zimmerman. All have their excellent qualities. What sets Zimmerman's set apart is the inclusion of excerpts from Joplin's opera, Treemonisha---especially "A Real Slow Drag." Why the other sets do not include excerpts from Treemonisha, I don't know---because they are some of his most beautiful and joyful pieces of music. Of course, you can hear the orchestrated version of Treemonisha in the Houston Grand Opera recording, and it is spectacular. But Zimmerman's piano version, especially of "A Real Slow Drag," is not to be missed.
Great set.......2001-10-16
I guess this will be a rather one sided review. I have been a fan of Scott Joplin since I first learned to play a piano.
I was shocked to see that one reviewer thought it all sounded the same. How silly. All of Frank Sinatra's music sounds like Frank Sinatra. All of Led Zeppelin sounds like Led Zeppelin. So, if the songs were drastically different, I would question if the same author composed them. As it is, though, each song on this set is fantastic!!
I don't know that I have heard of Richard Zimmerman, and I was a little leary as to what I would be getting, I certainly was impressed. Without a doubt the best renditions of "Weeping Willow" and "Bethena" I have heard, and at least a dozen songs I didn't know Joplin wrote.
Without a doubt, this album is fantastic. A very good price, as well.
