Alpha, the latest outing from this veteran act is both good and maddening. Good because many of the riffs and the songs to which they are affixed are driven by an element of boogie--for lack of a better term--too often absent from contemporary metal. Maddening because the group often cops out and trades in original and challenging ideas for the expected mid-song freak outs that will no doubt send listeners over the brink once the band takes the stage but do little but inspire passive listening in the current setting. As good as Sevendust may be on the stage, this is the studio and they owe it to listeners to create an experience that will last them a lifetime. A few more risks and less of an allegiance to brute force may serve this band well as it does in the more subtle moments of "Deathstar" and "Driven." --Jedd Beaudoin

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars another solid cd from sevendust.......2007-06-06

this is sevendust's 6th album and its a great one. it might be tied with animosity for the best cd. i like almost every song except story of your life. suffer, confessions of hatred, alpha and burn are my favorite tracks. the only problem i have with this cd is that morgan screams on every song and that gets real annoying. besides that great album guys. just try to scream less and use more melody which is what your best at.

5 out of 5 stars Kick Ass.......2007-05-14

I've been a Sevendust fan for years, and I admit that their music takes a little while to get used, from screaming to melodic choruses. anyway, this last album had a lot of really tasty double bass and the band sounds as tight as ever. Killer guitar licks and I think this is their best album yet, hands down. the album really rips.

5 out of 5 stars Vintage Sevendust...........2007-05-13

When Lajon said in a interview awhile back that the new songs they were writing were some of the hardest stuff that they have ever written, songs that make "Enemy" sound mellow. He wasn't kidding. If your a old school Sevendust fan, then this album is your album to end all Sevendust albums. This is a return to form of the in your face, rip your through your skull Sevendust. From begining to end this album doesn't give up, its relentless, lyrically and musically. This is quite possibly the hardest, most in your face album since they released "Sevendust" back in 1997. I've been a fan of Sevendust since 1999 when the released "Home", and I've eagerly awaited every album since. Every album they have made is very good, and Alpha is not an exception.

Bottom Line: Alpha is just another great album from Sevendust. If you thought they got soft, they are back, and they are back to rip through your skull, and believe me, thats a good thing.

3 out of 5 stars Juvenile.......2007-05-13

I suppose that over the years it can be said that Sevendust have been hit or miss, album-wise. They have the ability to write outstanding melody and crushing heavy hitters (i.e. Angel's Son and Black, respectively), but each album seems to find Sevendust attempting to find their place over again. It isn't the reinvention that I dislike as much as the lack of PROGRESSIVE direction with the "Sevendust style" as they continue to move forward in their career.

Alpha is a manifestation of the group's attempt at a return to an earlier era, as well as an attempt to harness a more brutal, less-polished sound, but it lacks conviction to me. The lyrics are weak in the sense that they attempt to express angst that sounds as though the words were composed by a 12-year-old. For example: Confessions of Hatred: "Responsible for bringing out my darkest side/I tried to hide what I feel but it's my time/
To inflict all the damage". If I were a fan of Hatebreed and their adolescent approach to angst, then maybe lyrics like these would trigger that itch that makes one want to break windows as a kid, but I am not, and they don't. The words seems empty and the rest of the lyrics in the song are a collection of rambling thought. That goes for much of the rest of the album.

The underlying music sounds more like a giant experiment instead of a composed effort. The guitar pieces are boring, even confusing, and I listen to Mudvayne, who constantly play in strange time signatures. However, most of the riffs on this album seem forced, and though I can admire a lack of flow (though, no one beats Tool for being able to play odd time signatures and create a groove), it needs to be able to flow well. By the end of the album, all the chunky parts began to run together and sound like they were cut from the same riff in the song before it.

However, it isn't a total flop, in my opinion. "Driven", "Deathstar",
"Alpha", "Story of Your Life" and (in spite of it's name) "Aggression" are all listenable tracks, in spite of my reservations on some of their lyrics and direction. Overall though, this album is weaker than most of the albums that have come before it.

I hope these guys find their direction again, complete with stronger lyrics, melody and composition. Next, Animosity, and Sevendust were all good albums, and I hope that they find that same energy in the future.

5 out of 5 stars Sevendust Rule and I wish I was in the band!!!!.......2007-05-13

From the first song to the last one this album rocks. In a world where most bands change their style of music to more main stream crap, Sevendust have stayed true to their fans. Alpha is just awesome! The songs are fast, aggressive and heavy and I love the double kick on all the songs. LJ's vocals rule. If you are a fan of Sevendust, you will absolutly dig this album. If you feel let down by your current favourite bands, get this album and become a fan of Sevendust. I cant stop listening to this album, it rocks! Buy it!!!!!!

At first it sounds like Living Colour vocalist Corey Glover was spliced into a joint project between Faith No More and Testament, but the longer Sevendust's self-titled debut album plays, the more it takes on its own life. The Atlanta, Georgia band is well schooled in thrash metal, but it has a soft spot for sing-along melodies and more than a passing interest in hip-hop. Cobbled together, the results could sound fractured and divisive, but Sevendust's surging wah-wah guitars, razor-edged riffs, bloodcurdling screams, and soulful vocals blend together as smoothly as strawberries and rum. --Jon Wiederhorn

5 out of 5 stars best 7dust album.......2007-07-28

still the best 7dust album. nuff said. I recommend this , and the home album. Once animosity came out in my opinion the music started to decline.

5 out of 5 stars A must have--foundation for an awesome collection.......2007-07-12

I cant really tell you what this album means to me...for myself, IT STARTED IT ALL. This album was my first love. I had some metallica albums and such back then, but this was something different. Gave me goose bumps! My taste in music from that day on has grown in the direction of "sevendust". Thanx guys for making an album that, to me, is legendary! I can still remember seeing the name "sevendust", picking it up, turning it over and thinking how cool that name was. I bought it mainly out of curiosity since I had never heard of them in 1997. Hell of a good thing I did....I was blown out of the water! BEEN JAMMIN THEM EVER SINCE THAT DAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Must have!!!1.......2006-08-28

This is a must have. One of the few CDs that I can listen to from start to finish without skipping around.

Great disc.

4 out of 5 stars It was promising.......2006-07-11

Wired (minus the lyrics) and Too Close Too Hate (minus the first half of the song) were OK and B1tch and Speak are good. The two tracks that shine are Black and Born to die. Unfortunately for the band this is their best album. Add them to the list of artists where their best (and sometimes only) good album is their first major release. Deftones, Staind, Rage, Pearl Jam, Korn (I know I said good, but if I had to pick one of theirs), you get the idea.

4 out of 5 stars what i have heard from it i like.......2006-06-25

i dont yet own their self titled cd(its coming shortly), but the few songs i heard from it i do like. it aint a collection until you own all their cds and thats what i am about to do. for starters in my opinion black is the best song sevendust has ever written. its fast heavy and has a good chorus. that song alone is worth buying the cd. others might disagree but to me that is their best song. and since i havent heard the entire cd i cant make a full review. i will soon though.

Home wasn't a place Sevendust saw much of following the 1997 release of their self-titled debut. The Atlanta-bred quintet spent nearly two years on the road, eventually earning gold status for Sevendust. The result is a band that is tight, precise, and finely honed. The songs on Home, however, while boasting a heavy and headbanging coolness like the Deftones with a touch of Faith No More funkiness, tend toward the unremarkable and redundant. The lack of hooks aside, Home still sounds excellent, thanks to producer Toby Wright (Fishbone, Korn), who ably captured the band's ample instrumental and vocal talent. Still, most listeners would be hard-pressed to sing along--or describe the difference between--"Home," "Denial," and several of the other aggro, riff-based songs on Home. While vocalist Lajon Witherspoon is powerful and melodic and writes thoughtful, personal lyrics, a welcome diversion is the addition of Skunk Anansie singer Skin on "Licking Cream," her wailing wakes (and shakes!) up the song and the record. It may be where their hearts are, but Home won't make Sevendust household names. Katherine Turman

5 out of 5 stars A Nu-Metal Classic.......2007-04-15

Overall this is one of the best NU-Metal Cd's. 20 years from now people will still be cranking this . It is a classic. Denial and Licking Cream are the 2 cuts everyone knows, but the rest of this CD is also very strong. My favorite cut is the absolute blunt crunch that is the title track, Home, when they play it live it feels like an earthquake. The rest of this CD is a little repetitious from a chord structure point of view, but other than that, it is consistantly good all the way through.

3 out of 5 stars dont own it yet but sounds pretty good.......2006-06-25

even though i dont own this cd yet ive listened to alot of the songs, waffle, denial, bender, and rumble fish. i like how heavy they sound on this cd and the drumming is very good too. some of the chorus's with the exception of denial and waffle kind of annoy me for some reason but still good. ill write a full review when i listen to the whole cd

5 out of 5 stars love the rest, but this is the best.......2006-01-10

I always knew Sevendust was around, but didn't give them the listen they deserved til about a year ago. Within one week of listening to them i owned every album. "Home" however, has to be their best work. "Animosity" is up there, "Seasons" though more focused on being melodic is still a good album, "Next" is a great comeback, and who can forget their self titled. I loved the first album, but it had noticable flaws. The sound was a bit muffled and a couple songs had some weak lyrics ("Whats that you put in your nose, can i have some? from "Wired"). It was as if Sevendust knew exactly what they needed to work on because the sound of this album is amazing and the lyrics are much more vivid.

1. Home 10/10 - The chugging intro riff of this is your first sign of a good sounding album. An underrated anthem, and the best part is when Lajon begins screaming "From Left to Right", you can picture the mosh pits.
2. Denial 11/10 - One of 7dust's well known songs, and for a good reason. This song hits you hard with the riffs and verses, then mellows a bit for the chorus, all together making one hell of a song
3. Headtrip 9/10 - I really like this song for some reason, not that its a bad song. its very unique and keeps things changing, mixing screams from both Morgan and Lajon.
4. Insecure - a little interlude, not much to rate here, though it sounds a bit like the intro to "Angel's Son" from "Animosity"
5. Reconnect - 9/10 - Another cool song that uses back and forth shouting from Lajon and Morgan, though i like headtrip better.
6. Waffle - 20/10 - What a song. It's damn near perfect and one of 7dust's best. The mellow intro fools people into thinking its a soft tune, then the chug of the riff rips through. The chorus of this song is classic and really addicting
7. Rumble Fish - 9/10 - A nice little mosh inducing song here, this one never lets up. highlight being the break when Lajon starts saying "Get Up" over the riff
8. Licking Cream - 8/10 - A bit softer, with a the help of Skunk Ansie singer Skin, this one is interesting. Skin really adds some flavor to the chorus, especially at the end of it when she hauntingly carries her voice along the main riff.
9. Grasp - 7/10 - A good song, not a huge fan of the chorus though. the lyrics are good, I just never really dug the way they're delivered.
10. Crumbled - 9/10 - This song is really aggressive. I like the "Wipe my face and get up again" chorus, really gives it a punishing attitude
11. Feel - 8/10 - I like how this song really mellows a bit. Lajon shows his vocal talents in this one
12. Grasshopper - another interlude
13. Bender - 9/10 - A very cool finish to the album, with the help of Chino from the Deftones. Chino's vocals really mix in well with Lajon's as this song completes a hell of an album.

In my opinion, each 7dust album is special in its own way. S/T was incredibly aggressive, "Animosity" showed power and melody, "Seasons" shows full melody, and "Next" proves that 7dust can still be heavy, but "Home" is their defining album so far. It's really the best starting point, since you can go both forward and backward in their discography with a clear idea of what this band will give you. And they still got it live as well, i highly recommend seeing these guys live, its well worth it.

5 out of 5 stars will never get old.......2006-01-07

I was about 15 when I first heard "Denial" on the radio and had to go out and check out this cd. I've listened to it constantly for the past 6 years and I've never gotten tired of it. When you think you've heard enough, another song just jumps out at you. Lajon has one of the best metal voices in my opinion, especially on this cd (where he screams more than most other 7dust cd's). Morgan has one of the best styles of drumming i've ever heard. Clint and John, the guitarists, have a patented sound which is brought to every song. I will always be dissappointed that there aren't many diverse guitar parts, such as solos, but that really isn't Sevendust's style.

Although this is a very heavy CD, Sevendust keeps melodic grooves throughout that keep the listener's attention. If its the melodies your looking for, buy ANIMOSITY. If its the heavy hitting sound, listen to their self-titled debut or check out their newest release NEXT(although recorded with a different guitarist, Sonny Mayo). If its a combination of all the highlights of 7dust's sound, Home is the album you wanna check out. It's a cd any metal/hard rock fan can appreciate.

5 out of 5 stars ... so wrong ..........2005-10-31

It's sad so few people see this album as the gem it is... In my opinion, tied with Animosity as Sevendust's best... why? First off, the guitar work by Clint and John is flat-out amazing. There is so much melody and harmonizing to be found, but it seems most can't look past the shear aggression to find it! Morgan's drumming? I think he really shined on this album... the complexity and precision is shocking. Then of course, there's Lajon's deep, passionate singing... angry? you bet! But still done with talent, not mindless screaming.

I just can't believe the reviews this album seems to get! I bought this CD on release day... and still listen to it! How many years is that? There's just something here, hidden... It's like the entire band had E.S.P. when making this one... They're so tight and together, each song is like an extension of the last.. I'll admit, I really don't like the first song "Home" at all... but every other song? I know like the back of my hand! I'm not saying to buy this album for 17 bucks... haha.. I'm not saying to even buy the album at all.. Just give some of the songs a chance... they'll definitely grow on you. You might be surprised... there's something really good here..

Those expecting a collection of full-on metal songs on the latest Sevendust album will get only half of what they want. While the band has always had a more melodic, less rap-metal approach than their peers, tracks on Animosity are far more accessible than typical nu metal. Some songs, with their contradictory mixes, do sound disjointed and confusing, but "Crucified," "Damaged," and "Dead Set" are just a few examples where it all fits together nicely.

Elsewhere, tracks fall into power-ballad waters, but thankfully they are not cheesy. "Xmas Day" and the midtempo "Follow"--featuring assists by Aaron Lewis of Staind--feature dark but emotional melodies that are carried beautifully by Lajon Witherspoon's soulful vocals. The album closes on a spiritual note with "Angel's Son," Sevendust's heartfelt tribute to late Snot singer Lynn Strait, which is fleshed out by a string section. --Gail Flug

Album Description

For the first time in the life of the band, Sevendust (TVT Records) have had time to write and create their songs at home, not in between tour dates as they have in the past. With this new, found freedom, the band wrote 13 mind blowing, beautifully-crafted hard rock classics.

5 out of 5 stars sevendust.......2007-07-07

incredible disc. this cd has it all, from the very first track to the last and everything in-between it delivers! non stop full throttle metal. sevendust does it again. one of their very best, and i have them all!!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent throughout.......2007-01-12

I only heard of Sevendust after seeing them play Angel's Son on Letterman, and I was blown away. So, I immediately bought their cd, not having heard another song. I was pretty surprised to hear how heavy they were, considering Angel's Son is very ballad-like. But I loved the cd from the first song to the last. I've listened to clips from their other cds, which seem decent, but from what I've heard, this is the epitomal Sevendust cd. Perhaps a bit more mainstream and hooky, but there's not a thing wrong with that. while very heavy, it's also very melodic, and i can get even a Britney Spears lover to enjoy this cd.

4 out of 5 stars Underated classic..........2006-12-15

While some people do appreciate this album, I find that alot of Sevendust fans don't really dig this album. I can't understand this to be honest. Sure, its different than their Self-Titled or Home, but since when is different bad? If I want to listen to Home, then I'll listen to Home. I just want to say for the record that this is a incredible album. I guess you could say I'm a huge Sevendust fan and I love all their albums, and this is easily some of the best stuff that they have done.

There is not a bad track on Animosity, but on the otherhand there is not really what you might call a standout track. There are no classic Sevendust tracks in vein of "Black" or "Waffle". With that said, I think this Animosity works better as an overall album than their earlier work. While previous albums had fantastic tracks, there were some that I would just skip over. I never felt the desire to sit and listen to "Sevendust" or "Home" from begining to end. Animosity is different. When I put it in, I usually do listen to it from begining to end.

I will admitt that this album is probably harder to get into than any of their other work. But it has lasting appeal, its a complex album. It doesn't get played out or feel stale. As I said before I think this is some of the best stuff that Sevendust has donc. Its not as hard as Home, but it's a very atmospheric album. It almost feels experimental at times. But you know what, it works. Lajon has such an incredible voice, you just feel impelled to continue listening. Give this album a chance, and you might fall in love with it.

5 out of 5 stars great from start to finish.......2006-10-13

This is pretty clearly my favorite Sevendust album, and pretty much one of my all time favorites as it has such a lot of really strong songs on it. There is no real flow to the album as such, one song to the next is fairly different, but that's good, just don't expect a sort of journey thing.

For me it's something like what would have happened if Living Colour had made a follow up to Stain - doesn't sound like them but the style of very clear segments of music within songs, powerful riffs, and passionately performed lyrics is a fair way different to a lot of the other hard rock stuff in offering something a bit outside a conventional formula.

While it doesn't have the same sort of stand out rock tracks as 'Home' had , it's gone for a range of really really good songs - tracks 1-3 and 6-9 are particularly good: Dead Set, Damaged and Praise perhaps a little above the rest. The rest is good, but not as good (to my taste) except the last track which is a complete masterpiece, a slower but exceptionally passionate dedication to a dear freind of theirs who passed.

For me having those 8 tracks which are exceptional is enough for me to really love this record, it's certainly a creative record (although it could be said some of the tracks on Home went a little further) and it's got a nice sense of power and passion to it.

5 out of 5 stars the best sevendust cd yet.......2006-06-25

i think this is the best sevendust cd and wont be matched. i own seasons and next and the first 2, home and their self titled i will be getting shortly. but out of all of them i like this one the best. its melodic yet heavy and has some great chorus's. the only sevendust cd that i own that i actually dont really skip any song. ive owned it for half a year and listen to it almost every day. the other cds are good too but this is their finest cd. the only song that i might dislike a little is beautiful but even then its an ok song. trust, live again, angel's son, and damaged are just some of my favorites

4 out of 5 stars Overlooked Band and CD.......2007-03-03

Typical Sevendust fare, and being a fan that isnt a bad thing. Some of the tracks sound a little repetetive but its still a very good cd.. Sevendust sound fresher here than they did on 'Seasons'.. and they are supposedly going back to an all out heavy direction(now), which hopefully doesnt sound forced.. This album delivers and they also know how to make a good ballad, Especially the final track on this cd. Gorgeous and beautifully sung. I didnt give the cd much of a chance when it came out, but i must say it is damn good! Now i feel like i have 2 new Sevendust cds to look forward to, this one and the one that will be released shortly. Hopefully that will put them back on the map..
They killed all of their steam by putting out the lame 'Animosity' cd.

I will never understand why so many bands try to go in the more commercial direction, especially when the real fans like the heavier and less generic stuff (in other words, the stuff that got you somewhere in the first place). Then they let producers and labels beat them down, well where the hell are those people now while 7dust searches for their 4th label? Sometimes it doesnt pay to make musical changes guys, just stay on the initial right path and hope for the best.. The real fans you usually cant get back!! Something to think about anyway... But this cd is better than i thought..

5 out of 5 stars This rocks!.......2007-01-01

Though I've heard other Sevendust tunes in the past, this is the only CD I've listened to completely, and I'm impressed. What I like most about this band is their ability to rock hard, yet remain melodic. They have strong vocals and harmony, and even throw in a complex ballad or two - not just some cheesy, gratuitous love song. These guys can rock! I am now officially a fan.

2 out of 5 stars Please do not call this metal!!!.......2006-08-12

Why in this decade do we call this metal? Don't get me wrong, I like Sevendust, but this album lacks substance. It don't need to be heavy to be good, that ain't what i'm saying, Seasons is an awesome album, probably their softest, but this I can't get into. Besides a couple of classic Sevendust tracks like Shadows in Red, Hero and Ugly, this is a strained effort. I'm sorry for all you fans out there, but lets be honest, this is a little substandard.
It cruises along at a pace that makes me feel like i'm listening to a Sevendust B-sides effort!!
I want and expect better from a quality band. Please give me more next time

3 out of 5 stars Mixed bag..........2006-06-30

I've been listening to Sevendust for years. I think that Lajon has some of the best vocals in metal music that I've ever heard. And some of Sevendust's music mixes elements that are unlikely combinations in a metal band - unlikely combinations that help make them stand out from the pile. Combinations like hard core rock with great melodies and sometimes "catchy" tunes, other times raw sounds. Sometimes you don't like what they do. Sometimes you love it.

On the good side, this CD mixes elements of hard core rawness that were most prevalent in their first album with the polish that has been in most of their other albums. As another reviewer mentioned, it'll take some listens to grow on you. But it will.

On the downside, this new CD totally overdoes it with the incoherent, beserk-style screaming. (Somebody suggested it's the drummer who does this.) Sometimes this aspect of the CD comes out like the proverbial turd in the punch bowl. This screaming has nothing to do with vocal talent. A twelve year old with a bottle of cloraseptic could do it.

The CD has enough good stuff that I listen to it, and just drop the volume or hit the skip button when the screaming is too much. I'll be looking out for their next CD. Hopefully they'll get a producer who can push them to make a better balance in the next CD.

4 out of 5 stars next best cd from these guys.......2006-06-25

this was the 2nd cd from sevendust that i owned and its my 2nd favorite behind animosity. even though they got a new guitarist(sonny mayo instead of clint lowery)the band still sounds as good as they always have. morgan's drumming is much improved over the previous 2 records and lajon's voice is still excellent. my only complaint is that the cd was too short they probably needed 2 more songs to make it much better. i like the songs hero, ugly, silence, failure and desertion. the only songs that i dont care for are see and believe and shadows in red. the rest of the songs are great.

4 out of 5 stars good work.......2007-03-20

this is a great cd. "Skeleton Song" has made my personal top 50 list of all time greatest songs.
The new album "ALPHA" is a return to the harder side, and it is great as well.

5 out of 5 stars Unbelievable............2006-12-15

You know what makes Sevendust such a good band? Its that each album not only feels new and fresh, but it sounds nothing like the album before that. Sevendust make complete albums. It occured to me because each album that they make have a distinct and unique feel to it, while still retaining the trademark Sevendust touch. Seasons is no different, and just a fantastic release. When this album came out, I was utterly addicted to it. I think I've listened to this album 100+ times. I had been a Sevendust fan before this album, but this album made me become a true Sevendust fan.

Seasons is genius. Masterpiece. Sevendust are no one trick pony. They can rock like no other band, but at the same time can produce beautiful songs as well. Broken Down is an example of this. A beautiful and moving track. I can never get enough of this song. There are a number of tracks that explore the softer side of Sevendust on Seasons, and they all work very well. But for the old school Sevendust fans there are a few tracks that will smack you in the face. The album opens up with the two most hard hitting tracks on the album, Disease & Enemy. Both tracks rock.

Overall, I can't say enough about how good this album is. If you havn't heard it, go get it now.

5 out of 5 stars The best of Sevendust.......2006-09-29

I have all of Sevendust's albums and Seasons is definitely my favorite..Broken Down, the track that made it to radio, is actually one of the weaker songs on this disc. The title track is in my opionion one of the best- along with Skeleton Song. Sevendust manages to have heavy guitar riffs and angry lyrics while having a good hook and a melodic sound-thanks to Lajon. My only request is that they come out with an accoustic album--Lajon's vocals are superior and one of the best out there in the Nu Metal world. Awesome job, guys!!

3 out of 5 stars sounds like NU-Metal.......2006-08-25

I used to be an avid NU-Metal fan, eating anything up that had the semi-tribal riffs and the typical verse, chorus, verse angst style that NU-Metal has to offer. I was totally wrapped up in bands like Korn, Limp Bizkit, Sevendust and Coal Chamber. But as I grew older, either my suburban angst fizzled into nothingness, or I just outgrew the music. WEll, lets face it, all of the early NU-Metal bands lost their flame after their first three albums or so(some losing their flame after one album!)
I loved Sevendust's self titled album, it was like a mix of hard rock, elements of metal and r and b soul music. Great stuff. It was a classic NU-Metal album, with some rap and NU-Metal's trademark repetitive riffs and drum beats.
But after their first album, I slowly stopped liking Sevendust. Their subsequent releases all sounded the same.
That was the plague that ruined NU-Metal, the endless repetition that was used to keep the fanbase. NU-Metal does not allow for change, you literally have to stick to the exact same style or your fans will disown you. I have heard every Sevendust album, and they all sound the same. The same drum beats, the same guitar riffs, the same vocal style. They seriously sound the exact same. Which is very disappointing, because that band has talent, they just waste it on sounding the same and trying to stay in the mainstream and keep the same fanbase. Season's, their latest album sounds just like their self-titled debut, except more ballady and commercial. It is very sad, sad indeed that Sevendust cannot expand their abilities, because eventually they will fade out just like NU-metal. The whole NU-Metal genre is fading out, and truthfully, it has already faded fast, bands like Sevendust are barely hanging on by thin threads.
There is so much talent in this band, if they could only learn more guitar chords and lose their eternal anger and depression phase.

3 out of 5 stars not their greatest but still good.......2006-06-25

seasons was the first cd from them that i got and even though its not my favorite i liked it enough to buy all sevendust's other cds. enemy was the first song by sevendust that i heard and i loved it. overall it isnt as heavy as the others but the songs still manage to keep me listening. i think lajon's voice is at its prime on this cd and he yells less which i think is better cause he can sing good. my favorite songs are enemy, broken down, seperate, and face to face. the others are ok but not sevendust's best work

4 out of 5 stars Sevendust's Acoustic Live Album........2007-05-13

This album is fantastic, I have never heard Sevendust perform these songs acousticly, it brings a different feel to the songs. Also, I love the fact that this album is a Limited edition, as it comes with official tour photos and a pick, as well as a dvd. I truly love this band and this album proves that Sevendust can perform live extremely well and the musicianship of each band member is of a high quality. Thanks Sevendust!

5 out of 5 stars turn off the lights and turn up the sound.......2007-03-20

I got this when it came out, and it never stops delivering. Raw emotion, talent and sound. It is more about the true song structure, performance and lyrics, instead of massive sonic assualt. If you really like this band, then take the time to get this and watch it.
And turn it up loud!

4 out of 5 stars Interesting change-up, A Sevendust fans Item, but may alienate the rock crowd.......2006-08-10

This is an interesting set put out by Sevendust. This was an excellent job at packaging (cd pick, post cards, DVD/Cd) and truely a fans pack. It was interesting to here sevendust as a stripped down version of itself, but not bad. This may have stemmed from the success of Angel's son, but also was a way for the band to showcase not only being a loud, hard pounding rock band, but also a great songwriting band, allowing the melody and vocals stand out and take shape without the loudness. Godsmack did a similar thing around the same time. I must say it took me a few time to adjust to tis album, but I do enjoy it now. But, as a warning for the person expecting to hear the Rock they expect from Sevendust, this will not be your collection. I would recommend the Greatest Hits Cd that came out Last year if you wan the rock versions. I really with they would come out with a regular Live CD, I have seen them live 3 times, and they are awesome, and it would be great to have that captured on CD.

4 out of 5 stars Only if you're a true 7D follower and enjoy acoustic music.......2006-03-02

I love it. I enjoy many styles of rock/metal/alt. what-have you. This package comes with a full length cd (live concert). It also comes with the same material on dvd. Really rocks if you have a surround sound system. Bottom line here is if you don't like acoustic music it's not for you. Definetly check out there new studio album "NEXT". There new album and "SEASONS" are two of my favorites from them, although i can't really pick just one. They all have that special something about them.

Since many Limp Bizkit, Eminem, and Korn fans aren't hip to the original rap influences that informed the late-1990s rap-metal explosion, Take a Bite Outta Rhyme's intentions are honorable--have rock bands cover tunes by rap luminaries such as Public Enemy, LL Cool J, and Ice-T. But things go astray with Dynamite Hack's intentionally sappy reworking of Eazy-E's "Boys-n-the Hood," followed by weak efforts from the overhyped Insane Clown Posse, Bloodhound Gang, and Dope. Then there are unimpressive entries from Driver, Factory 81, and Mindless Self Indulgence. The best renditions are heavy ones: Staind's "Bring the Noise," Sevendust's "Going Back to Cali," and Nonpoint's "The Tribute," which salutes Slick Rick, Busta Rhymes, and the Wu-Tang Clan. Rap-rock has come a long way since Aerosmith and Run-D.M.C. did "Walk This Way" and Anthrax performed a duet with Public Enemy, but as this CD indicates, the genre hasn't necessarily arrived at a better place. --Katherine Turman

5 out of 5 stars phenomenal.......2006-09-21

I have owned this album sinced shortly after it came out, and I still LOVE IT!!!
Old school rap and heavy metal are two of my top musical genres, and this is a tremendous compilation... highest reccomendation for anyone who is a fan of the original hip hop tracks that are expertly covered on this album. Also highly reccomended for anyone who is a fan of any of the bands featured on this album. From Sevendust to the Kottonmouth Kings, this CD is solid, start to finsh. Can I give it 6 stars?

3 out of 5 stars 3.5 Stars - It's okay, not bad. But only a few noteables.......2005-04-11

Since this album has been out a while, this review is probably an utter waste of time as either you all probably own it or will never know about it. However, my thoughts are as follows...

It starts strong. Staind does good, no whining like their newer songs, and Mister Durst is about as odd as ever (odd meaning childish but fun at the same time). Sevendust's song is alright; I've never heard the original song that they covered, but from the sounds of things its written like a fifteen-year-old did it. From there, things dwindle and fade into background noise.
Then comes Nonpoint. This song starts good, gets you interested. After a little bit you notice it keeps getting heavier and weirder and doesn't relent. You may not like it. But, mark my words, it will soon grow on you. In time, you'll be owning their first album and loving that too. Then you'll get their second album and puke but that's another review...

So, if you've just now strayed onto this page and are looking at buying this cd of yesterday, I hope I have helped your decision-making. I would overall recommend it, but only for a few standout songs. The rest is just sub-par. Then again, I am not much of a rap fan but a rap/metal with emphasis on metal fan. So, decide for your own tastes. I do not think you will be overly disappointed at all.

4 out of 5 stars Tha Tribute..........2003-02-13

This album, rare for alot of tribute albums, is actually pretty dope. I downloaded the track "Staind featuring Fred Durst and DJ Lethal of Limp Bizkit - Bring The Noise(Public Enemy/Anthrax cover)" and instantly I wanted this album. That song was only a part of this amazing CD. Dynamite Hack's Eazy-E cover of "Boyz-N-The Hood" is astounding. Its not heavy and loud, but has a nice acoustic guitar throughout the whole song. I guess you could call this a parody, but its my favorite track on the album. Insane Clown Posse(although a rap group) even appears. They do a cover of Sir-Mix-A-Lot's "Posse On Broadway". I'm a huge ICP fan and I think this track is alright but a little out of place on this album. Its still classic though. KMK, also known as the Kotton Mouth Kings, do a cover of the Getto Boys' classic, "Mind Playin' Tricks On Me". This song is awesome and is a great introduction to future KMK fans. Mindless Self Indulgence do a cover of Method Man's "Bring The Pain". This song is totally awesome if you like M.S.I. Factory 81, a band who I've never heard before, does the Cypress Hill hit, "Insane in the Brain". This song is okay, I like the screams but I don't think he has a good rap voice. =)> All in all, this album is awesome. I recommend it to the extreme rap/metal fans and even heavy metal fans. This is a great compilation...

5 out of 5 stars Why is the Emphasis on type of music?.......2003-01-23

I would have to claim this album to be one of the absolute best albums of all time!! I am about as all around in terms of music as you can get. I grew up on classic rock, rap, metal, classical, regea, oldies, country and even pop. This album is a great taster of some of the little known bands. The thought of taking some of the most classic rap songs and redoing them by these high potential up-and-coming groups is ingenious. This CD was my first experience with MSI, nonpoint, and factory 81. I have since fallen in love with the untapped greatness of each band. I even enjoyed the Staind song on the album and personally don't have much interest in the band. Dynamite Hack pulled off a miracle with Boyz, I didn't think that the song could ever be pulled off by anyone other than a rap group however they did it beautifully. Lets not forget the Clown's, KMKings, and even a little touch from the Jerky Boys, to round out this high quality CD.
I am very happy with the fact that this is a tribute by new rock musicians dedicated to old school rap. This album is proof that good new musicians will always find ways to press out from between the wastefulness of sellouts like Limp Bizkit and PapaRoach.
In finishing I would like to tell each and every one of you who are reading this review that you can't go wrong by buying this CD, you have gotten far enough to see my review you might as well buy it and see for yourself what a great album really sounds like. Since I bought this CD back in early 2001 I have passed it out successfully to more than a dozen friends with no complaints what so ever!! Very few CD's deserve 5 stars and in my opinion this deserves 5.5, but enough talk click buy, or at least find a friend who owns it.

5 out of 5 stars Everyone Wants To Be A Hustler.......2002-07-11

This is a good CD. You don't have to like hip hop/rap to enjoy the remakes of these classic songs. Worth the purchase price? Yes, because Dope does a killer version of New Jack Hustler that will blow your mind.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Awesome Album.......2007-02-28

I'm no more a fan of TVT cashing in on Sevendust's success then the next person, but that's no reason to rate this poorly. It is an amazing album, with some of Sevendust's best songs (in my opinion). Give the credit where it's due. Sevendust is an amazing band, so if you're just getting into them (as I was when I bought it) or want to good collection of songs, buy this, not because it's a TVT promotion, but because it's good music.

2 out of 5 stars principle, not music.......2006-07-20

First off, let me say that I am a big fan of Sevendust and the majority of the material found here is great. But the problem is, the music isn't the point of this release. The reason for this disc is greed. Recently TVT records and the band have, as you doubtlessly already know, parted ways. And it wasn't on what one would call, friendly terms. As such, the former felt it appropriate to milk the Sevendust cow to the point of death with this release. And even that wouldn't be so bad if they hadn't so clearly only chosen songs that were played on the radio (there's a difference between a "Greatest Hits" and a "Best of" compilation), though, admittedly, the songs here are good. And of course, to sucker consumers like me into purchasing this utterly unnecessary collection, TVT has included the token "bonus tracks." Okay, I'll be the first to admit that these songs are good, with the exception of "Coward" which sounds a little too much like another song from "Seasons" and showcases lyrics that are, to put it politely, pretty stupid. On the other hand, "Rain" is arguably the high point of the extra material, though the two covers nicely display the band's more eclectic yet distinctive side. But with only four "new" songs, it is hardly worth the time. If TVT really understood their demographic, they could have used more. Where are "Fall" and "Corrected"? Where is "Number One (The Ballad)"? Or how about their underrated cover "Goin' Back to Cali"? Or the superb "Leech"? Perhaps if TVT had opted to issue a b-sides and rarities collection instead of this, my rating (and opinion of them in general) would be slightly higher. Unfortunately, that is not the case. What we are left with is a sensation of unpleasant familiarity provided by corporate heads with an itch for more cash. In this sense, one can say that I'm not rating the music, but rather the principle behind this release. And by all means I am. Because, as I said before, the music is not the focus here; the money is.

5 out of 5 stars Reminded me just how much I love the intensity and raw power that is Sevendust.......2006-01-25

The Good
This compilation is arraigned chronologically from the group's debut self-titled album to their last studio release Seasons. The thunderous riffs and driving digital effects of "Black" is what introduced Sevendust to the rock lexicon. From there it was full speed ahead. "Bitch" switches things up with a mix of clean arpeggios mixed with balls-to-the-wall riffage. "Denial" displays Sevendust's transition into a more melodic sound. The group still manages to keep it heavy on "Assdrop." Lajon Witherspoon's vocal ability shines as he abandons the shouting for calming, pleasing, and melodic tones on the touching ballad "Angel's Son."

Don't mistake Sevendust's one ballad for them going soft on you. "Praise" hits you right in the teeth with plenty of punch, and a catchy, anthemic chorus. "Enemy" is the best representation of the group today. It's a perfect blend of their early intensity and their current melodic flair. There are 12 hits in all, and four bonus tracks. "Coward" and "Rain" are B-sides from Seasons, and their Marvin Gaye cover of "Inner City Blues" is from a bonus DVD that was included with that release. "School's Out" is a B-side track from a promo for the first Sevendust album.

The Bad
This CD is clearly TVT's was of cashing in on Sevendust's past success and probably part of letting them out of their contract. I guess the biggest slap in the face is that this collection was released while Sevendust is trying to push their latest album Next. Looking through the booklet it's evident that the band didn't have much to do with this release, and it must suck for them that TVT owns all the rights to their hits. "School's Out" is too different from the original for me. Its signature Sevendust, but the chord rearrangements distances it from the original.

The Verdict
Listening to this collection reminded me just how much I love the intensity and raw power that is Sevendust.

1 out of 5 stars It's not because the CD actually sucks, it's because people are boycotting TVT!.......2006-01-25

alright, if it was winedark releasing this cd, i'd probably give it a 4. but i would have waited until the ten, maybe fifteen-year mark before putting out a greatest hits record. when i first saw the cd, i was actually pissed off at the band, thinking "why the hell would they do this? so early in their careers?!" then i saw the giant f*cking TVT logo on the back. i put it back on the shelf and downloaded the bonus tracks off kazaa in a matter of minutes. simple as that.

F*CK TVT, don't buy this cd, pirate the bonus stuff just to p*ss them off, and pray every night that TVT president steve gottleib goes bankrupt (he already had to sell off the rights to Pretty Hate Machine by nine inch nails). or maybe trent reznor, vince hornsby and sony mayo will take turns --the rest of this sentence is in violation of Amazon.com's review policy--.

wow. where did THAT last line come from?

5 out of 5 stars Why do people say this cd sucks?!.......2006-01-18

I honestly think is a good cd (...). Sure, shame on TVT for not consulting Sevendust, but get over it, business is business people. Sevendust is going to my area and I want to let people listen to songs the might have heard before. This album gives out plenty of those songs that people reconize. Especially "Praise", that song alone is worth the price of the album. And hey, look at that, they even give the Praise music video which is also awesome. I like this cd because it has good songs. Don't judge it on whether Sevendust makes money on this or not because I'm sure Sevendust has plenty of money as it is.
