5 out of 5 stars Outstanding but not their best IMO.......2007-07-25

Too much filler here for my tastes. Can't stand the filler track Winds of Horus and Churning the Malestrom is weak as well.

That said, Sacarcophogus is legendary. Unas, Blessed Dead and all the Shrines tracks are great. Whisper in the ear of the dead is my favorite here outside of Sarco.

By any one else's standards this one is up there with the best death metal... by Nile's standards its solid. Just not a favorite of mine.

5 out of 5 stars One Of My All-Time Favorite Death Metal Albums.......2007-07-09

No joke. I have listened to In Their Darkened Shrines countless times at this point and I'm still in love with it. Probably the closest thing I've heard to death metal perfection. The majority of those familiar with Nile will probably agree with me that this is Nile's best offering. It's a perfect balance of Egyptian atmosphere, punishing riffs, amazing leads and heavy drumming. If you are new to Nile, or are new to death metal in general, then In Their Darkened Shrines is without a doubt the place to start.

5 out of 5 stars Otherworldly, Dark, Mystical Egyptian Death Metal.......2007-07-08

I have recently been spinning this album nonstop after listening to the equally incredible "Annihilation Of The Wicked" in preparation for Nile's new release, and felt compelled to once again extol the virtues of the incomparable Nile, probably the most original and interesting death metal band today.....

For the uninitiated, Nile are an extremely technical, atmospheric, intense and progressive death metal band whose lyrical themes and album content revolve around methodically and exhaustively researched Egyptian history, religion, and mythology. The sense of authenticity and drama is carried so far that the band will even use ancient Egyptian musical scales and melodic themes played on traditional instruments which are in many cases custom-built simply because they no longer exist. Nile is characterized by a single-minded dedication to their concept as art, and by their crushing heaviness and intensity.

"In Their Darkened Shrines" was my first exposure to Nile, and I have since explored all of their back catalogue as well, which is all just as eerie and convincing (and just as big of a sonic assault on your eardrums). At first, I was turned off by "Shrines", because it was just such an unbelievably chaotic, dense and complex mass of sound that it seemed almost like sensory overload....patience and time listening to the album in it's entirety reveal layer upon layer of very atmopsheric and evocative, dark and heavy music that really draws you into another world. From the slow, plodding doom riffs of tracks like "Sarcophagus" and the superb epic "Unas, Slayer Of The Gods", to the almost chill-inducing interludes of the amazing four part album closer "In Their Darkened Shrines", Nile really stand out as an original and progressive death metal band introducing the world to a completely original and convincing style. Intellectually stimulating and interesting (be sure to read the copious liner notes by Karl Sanders....a metalhead Eyyptologist, who knew?) and musically bold and original, "In Their Darkened Shrines" is an abolute milestone in the genre, and not to be missed. Highest recommendation.

5 out of 5 stars Brutal Death Metal Egyptian Style.......2007-05-08

This is Nile's masterpiece. Skull crushing technical guitar work by Nile's to axemen Karl Sanders and Dallas Toler-Wade and their trade offs on deep gutteral vocals calling from Amongst the Catacombs themselves. With the brilliant drum work of Tony Laureano this is an extreme metal fans wet dream. With tracks like Sarcophagus, Execration Text and the Destruction of the Temple Of The Enemies Of Ra will beat the living gayness out of any Hip Hop, Emo or Nu Metal poser.

2 out of 5 stars slightly confused.......2007-03-03

I really wanted to like this band, really. I am a big fan of a wide variety of heavy music, from latter day fare like Sabbath and Maiden to more modern outings like Opeth,Mastodon,LOG,Death,Sepultura, the list goes on. I appreciate many of the different genres of heavy music that are available, and I can remember at one time I wouldnt even listen to anything that even remotely resembled a "death growl". Obviously my tastes have changed, but I still think that I agree with a previous reviewer who stated that it should at least be coherent,to some degree. I just cant get past the fact that this just sounds incredibly jumbled,a mish mosh of different sounds and those vocals sound as if they are emanating from bowels. I apologize to fans of this and other bands like Meshuggah and so forth who seem to rely on ultra fast noise and something called polyrhythyms. I actually went and fished out some of my old thrash albums and some of the doom metal Ive acquired and then went back to this to see if my opinion had changed. Sadly,it did not. Sometimes theres heavy, like Strapping Young Lad that pushes the boundaries of metal but still retains some sonic fury and sense of core rythym without crushing under the weight of its own excesses, and then theres this stuff that is just too fast and heavy for its own good. Then again,Ive never been a real Cannibal Corpse fan or a Dillinger Escape Plan fan or even a Meshuggah fan. I guess this stuffs just not for everyone.
