Here's another to join the parade of page-to-stage musicals inspired by 19th-century fiction. This ambitious adaptation of Charlotte Brontë's haunting classic Jane Eyre for the musical theater seems to be part of a trend represented most famously by Les Misérables. It also reflects the increasing pressure to schedule an original cast recording release as close as possible to a new show's Broadway opening: in this case, in fact, the CD was both recorded and released prior to the show's opening in December 2000 at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre. But what's most significant for the artistic character of Jane Eyre: The Musical is found in yet another pattern: like a number of his colleagues, composer-lyricist Paul Gordon comes to the project from a pop music industry background (best known for his hit "Friends and Lovers"). And quite a few of the show's numbers benefit from Gordon's catchy craftwork, weaving melodies that are clearly destined to be whistled long past curtain. Yet the effect is sometimes too facile, not diving as deep as we would like into the emotional predicaments of Brontë's characters. You begin to crave a more deftly defined and imagined variety of sound worlds (especially for the darker aspects of Thornfield Hall) than what is hinted at. Gordon doesn't forge any new paths, but his melodic fluency does have its moments of payoff--especially in the moving final duet "Brave Enough for Love," which is also strong enough to stand on its own.

Gordon's predilections as a would-be son of Sondheim are nevertheless clear, and he's telescoped the story into mostly effective lyrics, with some thoughtful juxtapositions of material. Most importantly, he understands that this is more than a Gothic romance, foregrounding the central message of forgiveness that Jane learns as a girl. He attempts to explore the injured sense of self shared by both Jane and Rochester and sets them on a painful, mutual voyage of discovery.

The creative team also includes the veteran duo John Caird (book and direction) and John Napier (scenic design), who have collaborated on such epics as Les Mis and Nicholas Nickleby (not to mention the Las Vegas Siegfried and Roy extravaganza). And the show's creators seem to share a vision geared toward the more operatic end of the spectrum (it was opera composers, after all, who early on claimed 19th-century Gothic fiction for the stage, as in Donizetti's Lucia di Lammermoor), with an actual parody of coloratura in one showstopper ("The Finer Things") given to Blanche Ingram. Fortunately, the two principals have large, richly expressive voices to encompass the large, complicated emotions of these characters. Marla Schaffel singswith unusual beauty and brings dimension to her Jane, while James Barbour (whose resumé includes Beauty and the Beast) is never really threatening as Rochester, but rather a tortured soul who is sweet-voiced even at his most cynical. Mary Stout is a stitch as the blustery Mrs. Fairfax. While the show has already undergone a lengthy evolution from its very first workshops, the viability of its final, fully staged realization has yet to be determined. But this cast recording conveys an authentic sense of the musical's atmosphere and emotional scope. --Thomas May

The music in this album really gave me the feeling of reading the book. I think the songs were well chosen and well written, except of course for the songs sung by Mrs. Fairfax... I could have done without those. Jane and Mr. Rochester's songs carry the story well and they sound lovely. For any musical lover, or romance fan I definitely recommend this album.

This is a hidden gem and if you buy it and listen to it, I don't see how you can not love it. I have bought many, many Broadway cast albums but I still am a popster at heart. With all that said, this is a cast album that soars above the crowd.

I bought this several years ago and have listened to it repeatedly since I got it. Why do I love it so much? First of all, the lyrics are full of heart and emotion and tell the story ably. But it is the music and the performances that are truly remarkable here. The melodies are memorable and absolutely exquisite. The orchestration is lush but not sappy. The performances by the two leads are nothing less than stunning.

I never get bored with this wonderful cast album and it is very, very highly recommended.

I listen to this soundtrack all the time and I never get tired of the songs. If Charlotte Bronte story was written as a musical, then this would definitely be it.

if you like old-fashioned romantic stuff, this one's for you. Some songs are very inspired, the music is,for the most part, quite beautiful, and the story line keeps the essence of the Bronte novel. I heard this right after "Wuthering Heights: the musical", which is quite good, yet this is superior. Give it a try and you might be nicely surprised. I would highly recommend it to the ones who know the novel and to English Literature students: it offers a different and interesting approach to the novel.

The picture.......2006-12-11

I haven't purchased the CD but the picture of the inside of a church on the cover is not of a British church, like one would assume since it says its a recording of British choirs. This picture is of Notre Dame Basilica in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Just thought i'd let you know. I'll be honest; I'm one to judge things by it's cover and if the company took such care to choose a 'British' church for their British choir CD, I'm willing to bet the music is equally well selected... I'm being sarcastic. But I gave the product 5 stars because I didn't want to hurt its ratings just because i'm cynical. But check out the church if you're ever in Montreal, it's truly beautiful... here I'm not being sarcastic.

Too cool for some.......2005-02-22

Julianne Baird is breathtakingly good at what she does: intelligent, stylistically convincing, technically brilliant ornamentation, in a sweet, phenomenally accurate voice. I love it. Those not accustomed to this sort of thing, though, may find it lacking emotional immediacy. Consider also Kathleen Battle with some of the same material: not that she's better, but the appeal is more directly sensual rather than intellectual.

How could you go wrong with the clear seraph voice of Julianne Baird accompanied by the delicate skill of Ronn McFarlane on the Lute. Not only is the talent exceptional but the composed works of Lute music divine.

You listen to each song and are carried away to time/place devoid of any worry let alone any task other than to listen to Julianne and Ronn execute perfection. You truely feel part of the Elizabethan Court listening to this CD it is both beautiful and dark simutaneously.

Another fabulous feature to this CD is the simplicity of the recording of only lute and vocals with no special effects. To retain the warmth and purity of the composition it was recorded on location in 'The Troy Savings Bank Music Hall' in Upstate New York and is one of the finest acoustical settings in the world. Unlike modern pop music Lute music as written needs no manipulation or adjustment in the studio if executed by skilled artists and musicians in an acoustical atmosphere and this recording does exactly that.

I highly recommend this CD of beautiful music. It truely will evoke deep feeling and emotion.

John West is one of the best vocalists in today's metal music. He sang in many bands as a guest vocalist and has been part of a number of bands including the Danish progressive metal band Royal Hunt and Artension featuring keyboard virtuoso Vitalij Kuprij. Feinstein is another project he's been involved in as of late. As all these mentioned bands suggest, John West has a very multi-dimensional voice that fits each and every one of them.

Then there are his solo albums. The albums that feel like "his" the most. It's these albums that give him the room and opportunity to explore with his own ideas and musical endeavours which he cannot utilise in other bands. On his first two solo releases, West focused his powerful songwriting and vocal abilities on his 80's roots with a modern touch. The music was his way of expressing himself in a relatively more subtle way without having to get too over the top. With Earth Maker, however, he seamlessly blends all of his influences and the outcome is a hybrid of everything that's been a part of his career: from Artension to Savatage to Halford to Royal Hunt. The music is complemented by a moving concept theme about a Native American myth called Shenandoah and depicts his journeys in search of the "Earth Maker". It's a deeply touching story that ties in with a perfect ending.

Earth Maker is my favourite John West disc and one of the best solo albums to come out in the last 6-7 years. I fully believe that West's collaboration with long-time friend Chris Caffery from Savatage and Halford members Mike Chlasciak and Bobby Jarzombek has given him the opportunity to expand his vision regarding songwriting and brought out the best from him. Chris Caffery helped West with some of the tracks and Chlasciak covered the rest. With a drum god Jarzombek and guest musicians from West's bands Royal Hunt and Artension, he serves the purpose of this solo album perfectly. Vitalij Kuprij's sparse keyboard and piano playing is awesome as is the nicely done production. Everyone on this disc gives each song what it needs therefore producing a fantastic record.

Although West is primarily a great prog metal singer, he's also deeply rooted in the 80's rock singers world. The depth of the music is unbelievable. On one hand, there are straight-up melodic metal songs like "Soul of the Beast", "When Worlds Collide" and the title song "Earth Maker"; on the other hand there are tracks displaying West's remarkable vocal abilities. "Stand Sentinel" is a perfect example for it. Its unconventional structure, epic length, and sublime keyboard playing is pushed to unfathomable heights as John West delivers the lyrics with tons of emotion. His high end screams and lower register vocals in it prove his stunning gift. What's more is he pulls it all off effortlessly. "Life" is another song that deserves a mention. The vocal harmonies West comes up with here is out of this world. Chlasciak and Jarzombek, being long-time duos from Halford, play cohesive rhythm lines giving the music its final shape.

Chris Caffery has announced that he will be working with West again on his forthcoming album and I already look forward to it. Both the new Artension and Royal Hunt CDs are great, but I don't know if I'll play them over and over as I've played this one--for the last 2 years. This is music that refuses to get old. And that's how it should be.

THIS CD ROCKS. IF YOU LIKE YOUR MELODIC POWER METAL FULL OF GREAT GUITAR RIFFS THAT ARE DOWN TUNED BUT NOT NUMETAL SOUNDING THIS DISC IS FOR YOU. JOHN WEST IS AN AMAZING VOCALIST WHO COMBINES A GREAT HIGH END SCREAM AND A LOW REGISTER VOICE THAT COMPLIMENTS THE NEAR PERFECT HEAVY TUNES.FOR FANS OF TALISMAN AND YNGWIE.

This is the follow-up Halford Resurrection should have been!.......2003-04-12

WOW! If you love Halford's Resurrection effort but were slightly dissapointed with the follow-up Crucible (like me, I was let down, it's a good effort but just does not have the drive like Resurrection had when you first heard it.) And I say that because, John West has basically employed the [...]members of Rod Halford's band that was responsible for Resurrection to play on and write Earth Maker. Joining John are Metal Mike on lead guitar, and Bobby Jarzombek on drums from Halford. Their contributions both performance and songwriting, are massive and make this whole CD one metal masterpiece. Also joining in are Savatage guitarist Chris Caffery as another lead guitarist, and bass player Kevin Choon and keyboard player Lonnie Park. Among the songwriting credits, Metal Mike co-writes 3 tunes with John, Chris Caffery co-writes 3 tunes, and Lonnie Park co-wrotes 4 tunes as well as produces the album. I swear to God, this album sounds like it was produced by Roy Z who produced the metal mesterpieces Halford Resurrection, Bruce Dickinson A Chemical Wedding amd Helloween The Dark Ride. This album is write up with all of those, and is better than the Helloween album. The album is based on a story, so for it being a concept album, and a metal concept album at that, this is truly a landmark album that cannot be ignored by metal fans.
The story is about an Native Ameican Indian named Shenandoah, and his journeys through time and lives, as he embarks on his "Vision Quest" to meet the Earth Maker (hence the title of the album). There is also an awesome insert to this CD with lyrics, and a complete story revolving around all the lyrics and etc. Every song on here rocks, and each one is better than the last. If I had to pick 5 Metal albums over the years from 1997-2002, they would be Halford Resurrection, Dickinson's Accident of Birth and Chemical Wedding, Helloween's A Dark Ride and this masterpiece, John West's Earth Maker. Also, anyone who has his last 2 solo albums, Minds Journey or Permanent Mark, haven't heard anything yet!! This CD is AWESOME!! Metal fans, I promise you, this is worth [$$$] new!!! You will not be let down!!
