2 out of 5 stars A Great Idea, Poorly Executed.......2007-02-12

Like one of the reviewers of the Cure String Quartet Tribute album, I excitedly grabbed this from the shelf of my local music store. Figuring that it would be impossible for this not to be fabulous, I decided to forgo the opportunity to listen to it in the store first. The music of both of these bands is so evocative, distinctive and well arranged it seemed obvious that it would lend itself to classical interpretation; there are even strings on the original Age of Consent. Would that the Quartet had stuck with interpreting. Instead they seem bent on translating these songs, practically note for note. Perhaps they were trying to avoid being labeled as Muzak; perhaps they were aspiring for an edgy 'Alt Classical' flavor ala the brilliant group Rachel's. The result is nervous, jittery, overdone and even frantic at times. One of the things I love about New Order is the way that they instilled electronically flavored music with emotional sincerity, especially on their earlier work. Paradoxically the Quartet appears to be trying to bring out the electronic aspect over the emotional. The one cut where they seemed to back off and let the feeling emerge was Love Vigilantes, and it works beautifully- but then again the original Love vigilantes isn't electronic. I have given this album several plays. I really want to like it, but I'm going to return it. There's more than enough Joy Divsion and New Order material for the Quartet to make a second effort. Hopefully they'll read my review first.

5 out of 5 stars Attention guitarists and Brazilian music fans!.......2003-02-09

Anyone who enjoys Brazilian guitar music should seriously consider owning this album. Ahmed El-Salamouny is one of the foremost Brazilian guitarists in the world and demonstrates his robust talent as a player, interpreter, and composer. A pleasure to listen to, El-Salamouny plays with that wonderful combination of authority and an innate understanding of the music's deepest layers. His compositions, Salvador and Dia de Chuva are fresh additions to the Brazilian guitar repertoire and rank easily with the best that comes from the country. Crystal Voyager and Sirocco are not-to-be-missed, fascinating amalgams of different styles that many guitarists will want include in their own repertoires. The duet and trio pieces with Claudio Menandro on guitar and Gilson de Assis on percussion are charming renditions of music that is well known, but freshly done and as welcome to listen to, and perhaps even more preferable than other interpretations. Don't miss this one and Bravo! to Ahmed, Claudio, and Gilson.

    Customer Reviews:

    4 out of 5 stars Not bad.......2006-04-16

This being the first solo album of Kotipelto with an Egyptian theme, I decided to check it out. Now the songs are not bad, a little repetative, but definitely not bad. However, there is at times very little going on with the guitars and its just kotipelto's voice, but the voice isn't clear or distinct enough.

Sometimes the chords are boring but in a few parts, the guitar is really amazing (particularly the few songs in the beginning of the album). As the album continues the riffs get a little less creative.

Kotipelto's voice, though not 'front and center' in terms of the mixing is still very good, there is a good feel around the album, like when his voice is recorded over himself, and the chords sound Egyptian.

I'd definitely recommend this album to people who want pretty basic power metal stuff with a fex extras. And check out the song 'Travel Through Time' - that one's a masterpiece =]

2 out of 5 stars Interesting first solo effort.......2006-01-11

Stratovarius fans were all wanting to hear this. So what do we get? Well, truth be told, a bit of a lightweight take on Stratovarius, who hadn't been that heavy themselves just prior to Timo Kotipelto putting out this effort. The main instruments on this album are keyboards and Kotipeltos' acquired taste of a voice which don't make for an outstanding work. However the fact that he has had the intestinal fortitude to put out what almost amounts to a concept album for a first effort shows someone with self-belief and you can almost sense the joy and happiness that was part of the process of creating this album. My tip - skip straight to his second album and if you like that then think of picking this up.

    5 out of 5 stars Strato-fans, rejoice!.......2004-07-19

Do you like Stratovarius? If you do, but haven't heard about Timo Kotipelto's side project, you're missing out on a monster of a group. Principally, the lineup of the band is as follows: guitarist Mike Romeo (Symphony X), one of my favorite power/prog metal guitarists ever, bassist Jari Kanulainen (Stratovarius), another big influence on me as a bassist, keyboardist Janne Warman (Children Of Bodom/Warmen), perhaps the greatest keyboardist in headbanging history, drummer Mirka Rantanen (Tunnelvision), who has some monster blast beats, and of course, Timo Kotipelto (Stratovarius) on vocals. Overall, the album is better than any Stratovarius album (but not by a whole lot.) It features an overall better lineup, and a somewhat more progressive sound.

And now of course, the highlights of the album: opener "Intro/Travel Through Time" is pure speed metal pandemonium with a keyboard solo to be reckoned with. "Beginning" is the best song on the album, with a middle tempo and one of the greatest intro solos ever to be heard. And "Chosen by Re" is an epic, 7 and a half minutes, not as long as most epic songs, but still a masterpiece nonetheless. The whole album is awesome and great for Strato-fans.

4 out of 5 stars Yes, this is better than Stratovarius!!!.......2004-03-07

Often when a someone does a solo project, you wonder why they bothered because all they've done is churn out some carbon copy that their band could've easily done, no new ground covered. Well, I have to say I think Timo's been held back a little in Strato (no tragedy that he's left or been kicked out??)since he wrote everything on this album and all the songs are great-not one mediocre tune in the bunch. What makes this so much better is he wisely decided to forgo the familiar power metal genre, which I'm not so crazy about outside of Strato anyway, and make a more straightforward (but not run-of-the-mill) metal album. So what you get here is a killer melodic metal album with a who's who of metal musicians playing backup and none of the aspects that can make some power metal a little repetitive. I was awfully disappointed when I heard a couple of months ago that Timo was no longer in Strato, but now I can see why! I can barely wait until next month when his new album comes out. Actual rating: 4 1/2 stars.

5 out of 5 stars I like this better than Stratovarius!.......2003-10-16

Timo put a great one together here! I am impressed with the quality of his song writing skills. His singing is excellent, the music is phenominal, and his choice of Michael Romeo was brilliant! This album is not as symphony-based as Stratovarius, but has more balls and chunk. Romeo plays on 5 of the tunes, which happen to be the best songs on the album. The other guitarists are good, but they don't hit you like Romeo. All said, every song is excellent and I highly recommend this to anyone who is a fan of Symphony X, Stratovarius, or both. 10 stars!!!

P.S. - Michael Romeo kicks major butt!

          Customer Reviews:

          5 out of 5 stars A valuable collection........2003-01-12

Admirers of this very major singer may well judge this to be the very best collection of John McCormack reissues on the market. It gathers together everything he recorded in the last twenty months of his singing life. Joining with accompanist Gerald Moore at London's Abbey Road Studios, he recorded sometimes as many as six items at a recording session.

Gerald Moore, in his autobiography, recalled that John McComack was averse both to rehearsing and to recording more than one take of each song. Of the dozens of items here, almost all derive from a first take. Only once was there a tiny error. It occurred in the song "The Green Bushes". Listen carefully, and you will hear John McCormack begin to sing "So sweetly she sang" before correcting it, in the nick of time, to "So sweetly sang she". There was never a chance to do another take, but fortunately the item was eventually issued after McCormack's death. Indeed, there are many items here that were issued posthumously, and at least six published here for the first time. A couple of duets with Maggie Teyte have had little or no circulation. One of them here sounds to be copied from a slightly faulty but perhaps only existing copy.

In the old-fashioned, sentimental and imprecise terminology of his day, McCormack sang from his heart, and aimed to touch the hearts of his hearers. It is fortunate that sound recording caught these performances so well, before emphysema silenced McCormack forever, and it is fortunate that Pavilion Records and supervisor Brian Fawcett-Johnston make them available today.

4 out of 5 stars A good sampling of the last days of an inimitable artist........1999-04-21

By the time these performances were put to wax, McCormack's voice was twenty or more years past it's prime. But, unlike most classically trained singers, McCormack's vocal limitations appear to have encouraged a more musically adventurous approach to his singing. His later recordings have an immediacy and sponteneity that is absolutely unique to a singer of his era and training. His singing is, in fact, more like that of a "pop" singer, in that the voice takes a back seat to the phrasing, and ablility to convey a lyric with honest emotion instead of histrionics. The clarity of tone, and the ring of the high notes is gone in these recordings, but the "presence" of McCormack the songster is stronger than ever. The transfers are excellent, as we have come to expect from Pearl. While the fidelity is not what most expect from today's recording techniques, to my ear they are more satisfying. The voice is recorded up-front and very clearly, and we can revel in the knowledge that it was all originally recorded "honestly"; that is, without edits and without electronic alterations of any sort. McCormack was a great artist who never became boring. In this day of bellicose tenors who are content to sing the same repertoire in the same manner year after year, that is saying a lot. If McCormack's singing is new to you, do yourself a favor and get this one. Also pick up one of his youthful operatic recitals, and you will come to know just what a great performer and amazingly varied artist he was. Enjoy, for his like will probably not be heard again.

For The Love Of Love" (1999). Die feinere Klinge also.

(Theater Of War).

Will you really take me to the heart of Mexico
Across the border, where no one else could go
If I could touch you for a moment of my life
It would last forever in the corners of July
** Someday, someway, you'll be with me
Somehow, deep down, you'll find me in time (Ann Klein: Some Day)
