Bon Jovi's breakthrough album epitomized everything that late-'80s arena rock was about: catchy hooks, fluffy-but-clever lyrics, girls, and guitars, though a more-than-attractive frontman didn't hurt either. The best material on Slippery When Wet is anthemic; "Livin' on a Prayer" and "Wanted Dead or Alive" were major hits. Love (and anti-love) songs are another important staple on this album: "You Give Love a Bad Name" (another hit), "Never Say Goodbye," and "I'd Die for You" feature prominently. An entertaining mix of pop metal and Bruce Springsteen, Bon Jovi has never exactly stood out from the crowd; however, they do what they do very well. --Genevieve Williams

Slippery When Wet transformed Bon Jovi from minor-league poodle rockers to global superstars on the back of hit singles "You Give Love a Bad Name," "Never Say Goodbye," and, of course, "Living on a Prayer." From the scantily clad car-wash girls on the inner sleeve to the "You lost more than that in my back seat / Yeah!" lyrics, the album is blissfully untouched by irony and subtlety, which actually adds to its charm. With guitarist Richie Sambora and songwriter Desmond Child, Jon Bon Jovi has produced a slew of consistently memorable tunes, and this album contains its fair share of them. Slippery When Wet won't change your world, but it will, undoubtedly, rock it. --Ronita Dutta

never say goodbye,a classic prom record.......2007-06-05
bon jovi's slippery when wet is a classic prom record. when you go to the prom this year and hear classic '80s music, you might hear you give love a bad name, livin' on a prayer, wanted dead or alive, wild in the streets, and of course never say goodbye. have fun at the prom and hold on to your keys. ed wilson
Changed my life...seriously.......2007-05-10
Everyone has that one album that they can credit with changing the way they listened to music. Some are fortunate enough to have experienced this great awakening to Are You Experienced or The Doors. For others it was London Calling, Ramones, or even Black Sabbath. For me it was Slippery When Wet. That's right, Bon Jovi changed my life. I realize on some level that I should probably be embarrassed about that little fact, but the truth is I love this album every bit as much now as I did two decades ago.
I still remember like it was yesterday. I was 11 at the time, and didn't really care about music one way or another. I did however think that Transformers were quite awesome, but I digress. I was flipping channels and came across the video for Livin' on a Prayer. I wish I could accurately describe the impact that silly, you and me against the world love song had on me. It was like all of the tumblers of a combination lock sliding into place inside my head. I knew I had to hear more, but that wasn't going to be easy. My mama didn't dance and my daddy didn't rock & roll, so to speak, so I had to track down the cassette through a friend. If Livin' on a Prayer grabbed my interest, You Give Love a Bad Name and Wanted Dead or Alive sealed the deal. After that I moved on to Poison, Europe, Stryper, and dozens of other hairspray laden bands that I naively thought of as "metal", but Bon Jovi was the first.
I sometimes wonder if I would have reacted the same way to any other album. Somehow I doubt it. Bon Jovi was at the top of their game with this album. You could argue that their follow-up album New Jersey is the band's best, but I'll put the songs on Slippery When Wet up against that Bad Medicine stuff any day! With Slippery When Wet, Bon Jovi built on the sound they developed with their two previous efforts and added hitmakers like Desmond Child to take the songwriting to a whole new level. I can hear you snickering at the thought of You Give Love a Bad Name and Never Say Goodbye as examples of quality songwriting, but it's hard to argue with the results. I believe that the lessons Jon Bon Jovi and Richie Sambora learned while recording this album are a big reason why they are still big stars to this day, when so many of their peers have been relegated to the bar & grill circuit.
Slippery When Wet was the perfect fusion of Bruce Springsteen's American rock & roll, Van Halen's party rock image, and an impeccable pop sensibility. It didn't hurt that Jon and the boys were easy on the eyes and could represent the new face of "metal" in a totally unthreatening way. I can't help but wonder how many other kids made their way to Iron Maiden and Metallica by first discovering a band like Bon Jovi.
Say what you will about this era or this style of music. I firmly believe that Slippery When Wet is a great example of rock & roll in the 80's, and it will always have a special place in my heart.
NOTE: Slippery When Wet was reissued in 1998 with digitally remastered sound. Serious collectors may also want to check out the import version with the original cover art that the band nixed, not because of the racy image, but because of the pink border. Go figure.
Bon Jovi Album- Slippery When Wet.......2007-05-09
I grew up in the 80's and this was one of my favorite bands. I recently purchased the remastered CD from Amazon. The CD arrived quickly and in good shape. I was very pleased with the service and the prompt delivery. The album is every bit as good as I remember from my youth. Now my son is hooked on Bon Jovi as well!
Bring back the high school memories.......2007-03-30
I had this on tape when it came out in the 80's and have been meaning to purchase it on CD for quite some time. This CD brings back so many high school memories.
cheesy hair music at its cheesiest.......2007-02-19
I loved this album. It came out when I was about 12. I guess that's the only time I could enjoy the album.
Bon Jovi seems incapable of writing lyrics that amount to anything other than a string of cliches.
This album can really only be appreciated by those of us who were young when it was popular.

Simply Awesome!.......2006-02-07
I have been a fan since 89 and have of course listened to SWW many, many times. Well, until you listen to the High Resolution 5.1 mix of SWW contained on this disc on a good home theatre setup, you have not heard this album at it's best.
The High Resolution 5.1 mix just blows me away in terms of it's clarity and the separation of vocals (both main and backing) and instruments. Jon's voice sounds fantastic. As a bonus virtually every track has been tweaked or remixed to some extent - some more than others ie Livin On A Prayer, Raise Your Hands, Never Say Goodbye. But listen carefully, you'll be pleasantly surprised by all the subtle differences in the tracks.
If you have the right equipment, you should definately get this version of the album. You will not be dissapointed!
I'm just hoping that Island Records release both the New Jersey and Keep The Faith albums in this format. Now, that would be heaven!
5.1 Wins Again!.......2006-01-16
Anyone who listens to 5.1 surround version of albums already knows how much better it makes the music sound. This album is no exception. Although it seems to lack in bass, it was nice to hear alternate versions of the songs that appear on the original album, most having a longer play time. Add to that the videos that were included and you have yourself a great little "Slippery When Wet" package. And I can't forget to credit the often-too-greedy record companies for releasing this DualDisc at an excellent price!
The Magic Still Flows..........2005-11-27
These guys have kept the magic flowing through my senses...straight to the heart. Amazing would be just a small word to appreciate....
Slippery When Wet.......2005-10-26
It is a classic record and now you have the video's on the other side.
It sends me back in time and I just love it!!!!!
I gotta admit.......2005-10-06
I have to say first off I am not really a Bon Jovi fan ,but my wife is a fan so I do hear her playing their music in our home.
That being said, I like to think I am a savvy audio fan. I started out with a small 5.1 system 3 years ago and have continually upgraded by reading different articles and attending trade shows and also by shopping at high end audio visual stores. I love the system we now have even though it cost me an arm and a leg. My wife bought a dual disc version of Slippery so she could listen to it in surround and I have to say strickley from an 5.1 listening experence it is the most exciting cd/dvd I have listened to. Up until now I thought Dark Side of the Moon was the bench mark for contemporary music in 5.1 but this dual disc has now moved into first place for me. There is so much depth and clarity to the mixes, I can't believe I haven't known about their 5.1 catalogue before. If your an audiophile give this a listen, you'll love it. Oh yeah.. Living on a Prayer really does rock. Hope this helps..

This is a very good album - not the Holy Grail.... but good.......2003-12-05
Yes, this is a "classic." Though not the musical muscle flex of their later works (you MUST go endure my ranting review of the Blaze of Glory Album if you haven't already), Slippery When Wet not only 1) generated the mass hits that for many people are the only Bon Jovi songs they know, 2)saved Bon Jovi's career and ALLOWED them to make better albums later on, 3) defined an era, and 4) unified a "band sound" for them, but it was the embryo of what would become the most profound emotional journey as the band marched onward to later albums. This is an essential album both for the band to have made, and for anyone's collection. I don't care how many copies it sells (though please go by another copy so we can see the thing push another platinum level), it's not as good as Jersey, Blaze of Glory (the holy grail), or Faith, ... but it IS good, and when in the right mood, it can still serve emotional functions even after having been listened to for a decade and a half. If you don't have it, would you please just go get it? Enough said about Slippery.
One of the best hard rock albums of the 80's........2000-09-13
If you're into 80's hair rock, you can't go wrong with this one. This is one of the few albums of the era (and even Bon Jovi's only), that is consistent all the way through. All ten songs here are keepers, including the hits: "Wanted Dead or Alive", "Livin on a Prayer", and "You Give Love a Bad Name", and the strong album tracks "I'd Die for You" (my fave), "Never Say Goodbye", and "Without Love". If you have the extra money to throw around, you even get a music video for "wanted" on here. While CRUSH, the new BJ album is a good one, part of its current success is a testament to how strong this bands 80's output was. There's a reason why this album sold over 10 millions copies people!

Go figure.

WHAT MORE CAN YOU SAY.......1999-06-24
'CAUSE I'M A COWBOY, ON A STEEL HORSE I RIDE AND I'M WANTED DEAD OR ALIVE.
Im my mind the best album that Bon Jovi has done. It is raw rock, the best there is. With Richie playing the guitar, how could ANYONE go wrong. There talents combined leave them as one of the best duos ever to live. Long live Bon Jovi and LONG LIVE ROCK!
