To loosely paraphrase the traditional Passover question: What makes this Dave Matthews live album different from the last one he recorded at Denver's Red Rocks amphitheater a decade previously? There's a savory cover of The Zombies' chestnut "Time of the Season" strategically frontloaded, but this edition revolves largely around the Stand Up album he was ostensibly promoting on this '05 tour stand at his beloved Rocks, as witnessed by focused renditions of the title track, "American Baby" and "Dream Girl" here. But as the set's workout of "Louisiana Bayou" forcefully argues, their sense of energetic economy (and occasional, timely politicking) infuses much of the rest of Matthews jamfest ethos with renewed muscular wallop as well. The presence of a horn section and guest keyboardist Butch Taylor on some tracks ups the ante considerably, though even core band renditions of staples like disc one's expansive closer "Bartender" seem charged with renewed passion. The running order here occasionally betrays the collection was edited from four nights and a considerably wider range of performances, but the included bonus DVD gratifyingly expands upon the audio rather than simply replicating it with complimentary performances of "Crash Into Me," "Recently" and "Jimi Thing." --Jerry McCulley

Must Have for DMB guys.......2007-06-06

I'm a huge DMB fan and I only have one other concert DVD. The Central Park Concert has been a great thing for me to pop in when I want to get to see them play most of my favorite songs, but it started getting old for me so I decided to get this as my second DVD to freshen things up, and it was a very good choice. Good song selection that is a little bit different from the mainstream stuff you see and I like the camera angles. The band goes crazy on Louisiana Bayou and it's very fun to see Randolph there as a guest. Everybody Wake Up is very cool, So Much To Say and Too Much are also awesome as well, and Dreamgirl is a nice mellow one. On the CD I would say that Don't Burn the Pig is a great song and I also enjoyed Stolen Away, Smooth Rider, and Hunger For the Great Light. If you want the main DMB songs, buy Central Park. If you want a variety of new songs, buy this next.

Dave Matthews have released so many live CD and this one is another collection of their great live CD!

It's amazing how much they could play the same songs they have been playing for couple years! People still loves to hear what they offer. It's amazing.

Dave Matthews Band is kinda band you could listen to their songs 41 times and still feel fresh.

I liked the cd for the most part. Dave Matthews Band has their own music genre. Nothing like them. This, however, wasn't my favorite Dave CD. Since it was live, Dave got a little caught up in the moment, and I don't like how he strains his voice a lot in this cd. Still pretty freaking awesome though.

Incredible - wish there was more!.......2006-10-22

I'm a DMB obsessive, and this album was a huge addition to my collection. I've been stuck on all the old stuff and haven't really gotten into the new stuff until i bought this one. On the cd's, the highlights for me are Don't Burn the Pig, #41 (one of DMB's all time best!) and Smooth Rider. The entire DVD is brilliant, but the ones that stand out: Dreamgirl, Louisiana Bayou, Recently and Jimi Thing. If a non-DMB fan watches Recently on the DVD and is not a fan afterwards, they have serious issues. The only issue I have is that I wish there was more on the both the CD's and DVD!
Buy it - you won't regret it for a second!

Stay Away.......2006-01-05

While the piping is excellent, the audio, particularly in the first half of the cd is terrible. Nearly 15 minutes are almost indecipherable. I think the recording was made with a hand held mike at the edge of a field.

Edinburgh Military Tattoo.......2001-05-19

The Edinburgh Military Tattoo first started in 1947 with some spirited displays of army piping and dancing. Since that time the show has grown to become a world class act, unfortunately losing some of its traditional elements along the way. The word "Tattoo" is a corruption of the Dutch "Doe den Taptoe" which literary means "turn off the taps", a reference to when a lone drummer would play a "tattoo" or drum roll to signal the inkeeprs to stop serving beer and to summon the troops back to barracks. This ceremony was performed by the British while they were in the low countries during the early 18th century, but it is a custom common to many armies of that time, in particular the various German princeapalities of the day. Over time the Tattoo evolved into a more elaborate affair as more bands and musicians were drawn into its fare. What we have here is the modern development of the form started in previous centuries. The Edinburgh Tattoo is justly famed for its display of massed pipes and bands, and while the recording quality here is not the best, the listener can still get a good idea of the spectacle produced. The original recording of this 1972 show was recorded by EMI, but this version is a knock-off cut that was done by a small American record firm, and which since has been sold about in various forms as a popular item. It is unfortunate that we don't have a better version of the show for listeners than this. The Tattoo produces a recording every year, as well as a video which can be obtained by contacting the Edinburgh Military Tattoo via their website which can be found using any search engine. The good thing about this recording is that it does provide a glimpse of the show in its heyday, where modern fluff and show biz influences had not crept in as much as they have today. For this reason this CD is worth having, and serves as an introduction to this great pageant of the Scottish regiments and the British army. Even though the show is watered down today with pop elements, the grandeur is still there when the massed pipes and drums march out onto the castle esplanade playing the grand old tunes. Even the politically correct producers can't ruin this grand sight, and its hoped they never will!

The producers and engineers for this CD are to be commended for the remarkable quality they obtained on this outdoor recording! While not quite like being there, it does convey the spirit and energy of the Tattoo.

Pipes and Drums: Amazing Grace.......2000-06-11

I love the sound of the pipes for this one song, and is my favorite.

Love this kind of music - can't get enough - have most all of the CDs. Excellent New Jersey-based company with excellent foresight and retro-understanding for the best party and jazz combos. Excellent choice for any kind of day or evening, party or relaxation time.

These recordings date from 1964 to 1972. During this time period, there were two kinds of "pop" music. There was the kind for teenagers, which featured the likes of the Beatles, the Beach Boys and the Ohio Express. And then there was pop music for the parents of teenagers, featuring the likes of Mel Torme, Peggy Lee and the Hollyridge Strings. This CD features teenage pop songs as performed by pop artists for the older folks. Boy, talk about a style clash! Can you imagine Peggy Lee singing "Everyday People", or Julie London singing "Yummy, Yummy, Yummy"? Well, you don't have to imagine it, you can get this CD and hear it for yourself. There are some strange renditions of songs that will be familiar to anyone who ever turned on an oldies radio station. Most of the songs are instumentals, although I wouldn't call it "elevator music", for the most part. Special mention to the Little Big Horns, who include sounds of an Indian attack in their version of "I Heard It Through the Grapevine" (Little Big Horn = Custer's Last Stand, get it?). Fans of "kitsch" should dig this CD.

I think they used up all the 'good' songs on the first On The Rocks compilation - this one seems to be scraping the bottom of the barrel a bit. Part 1 is highly recommended for lovers of things tacky, but Part 2 is a bit thin.

Mel Torme, Peggy Lee and Kurt Russell (?) sing rock 'n' roll.......2004-07-22

Just think of it: Kurt Russell as the Hillary Duff/Lindsay Lohan (take your pick in that contemporary turf war) of his generation. When Russell found himself in a series of successful movies for Disney he was quickly signed to a record deal where he covered bubblegum classics like Tommy Roe's "Dizzy" and The Archies' "Sugar Sugar," which is the final track on "Ultra-Lounge: On the Rocks, Part 2." Make no doubt about it, this is a collection of what would be considered "classic" kitsch 'n' roll (or rock 'n' kitsch if you like). You probably will never be able to get a CD version of Kurt Russell's self-titled debut album, or any of the other bizarre albums that attempted to make rock 'n' roll more palatable for the masses or were simply produced by people heavily into drugs (e.g., "Sebastian Cabot, Actor, Bob Dylan, Poet," "Jayne Mansfield: Shakespeare, Tchaikovsky & Me," Jack Webb's "Just the facts of life, ma'am," or Tony Perkins' "On a Rainy Afternoon"), but you can get this collection of misses and misses (and, to be fair, you can get Robert Mitchums' "Calypso is Like So...," Tony Perkins' self-titled album, and, of course, the mother-lode itself, William Shatner's "Transformed Man").

Overall there are two types of songs included in these 23 tracks. First there are essentially instrumental distortions, er, versions of classic rock songs, such as "Carry That Weight" by Francis Lai. But be prepared for anything because this is an album where "I Can't Get No Satisfacation" begins with the opening notes played on a dulcimer. There is a touch of psuedo class here, with the Hollyridge Strings (NOT the "Hollywood" Strings mind you) doing a Beach Boys medley of "I Get Around/California Girls." Peter Duchin shows up to do "Superfly," which was a bit of a shock. Other instrumentals include "Summer in the City" by Buddy Morrow, "Mrs. Robinson" by Guy Lombardo, and my favorite of the bunch, Deep Purple's "Hush" by the Royale Blue. If you like sitar music you get a double dose, with Lord Sitar joining Sandler & Young for a Beatles medley of "Blue Jay Way/Blackbird" and then returning solo to do the Who's "I Can See for Miles." But expect lots of strings (e.g., the Hollyridge Strings with "Can't Buy Me Love/Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" and John Andrew Tartaglia's "Light My Fire") and horns (e.g., Little Big Horns' "I Heard It Through the Grapevine" and Henry Jerome's "Oh Pretty Woman").

Then there are the songs were singers actually do some singing. These range from "chorale" type versions of songs, such as "Heart Full of Soul" by the Johnny Mann Singers, which opens up the album, to covers of familiar songs by familiar artists, like Mel Torme doing "The Games People Play" and "Happy Together," while Peggy Lee does Sly Stone's "Everyday People." Julie London does a really slow version of "Yummy Yummy Yummy," but that is really it for recognizable names. Then we jump to the other extreme and have the likes of Mrs. Miller doing Nancy Sinatra's "These Boots Are Made for Walkin'", the fun-loving senior who I would have given the final spot in the collection to, because after mangles that song (including her breathless "Yeah" at the end of the first chorus) there is no place to go and you might not actually being aware the Russell is doing "Sugar Sugar" until the silence afterwards pierces your consciousness. I have a definite preference for the songs with singers in terms of the kitsch quotient here because the instrumental tracks at least can be categorized as elevator muzak, which takes a star away from the rating because if a song on this album goes not make part of your groan in delight, it is just not doing its job.

Too funky.......1999-08-06

The "On the Rocks" UltraLounge pair are just too funky. Were these done "tongue-in-cheek"? I certainly hope so. In any case, I recommend this CD to anyone with a bizarre sense of humor and a taste for theme parties. "I Get Around","Yummy, Yummy, Yummy" and "These Boots Are Made for Walkin'" hit the spot. Which spot? That depends on you...

Don't We Just About Have All Julie's Records On Cd?.......2006-07-13

I just got this cd in the mail. It is excellent. I have all the
EMI two-fers so as anyone can tell I am a died-in-the-wool Julie fan. I have the vinyl version of Julie, and so I am glad it was
re-mastered in the original mono.
On another note, I was reading through Julie's discography and
two more that would make a nice pair for a cd release would be,
Send For Me(1960) and Whatever Julie Wants(1961). I have never heard these but the reviews are pretty good. For a good version
of the song "Send For Me", I recommend the cd "Julie In Person At
The Americana". As for EMI's next release, how about the above
mentioned lp's. Are you listening EMI?

Two Masterpieces on one CD.......2006-05-24

"Julie" (1957) is an upbeat album full of swinging, jazzy standards. There isn't a slow or sad track in the whole set, and Julie proves she can swing with the best of 'em. This album is comparable to many of Sinatra's swing concept albums of the '50s, and is just as good. Some of my favorite songs on this album are "Back Home in Indiana" and "All My Life." There is also an excellent, upbeat rendition of the Glen Gray hit, "For You." This would be an excellent album to play as background music at an elegant cocktail party.

"Love on the Rocks" (1963) is the exact opposite. It is a concept album which tells the story of a break-up. Julie shows her acting talent through her performances of these torch songs--the sadness conveyed in her voice feels genuine. These story albums are my favorite; Sinatra did a few, but in my opinion Julie London mastered the art. She is such a subtle singer as to not overwhelm the songs, or make them seem depressing. What makes this particular album such a standout is the selection of songs, including: "Where are You," "What's New," "A Cottage for Sale," "The End of a Love Affair," "I'll be Seeing You," "Don't Worry about Me," "The Man that Got Away," and "Willow Weep for Me." Julie's renditions of these songs are unique and among the best ever. As you can see, the song cuts are premium choices and I wouldn't be surprised if Julie had a hand in selecting the tracks herself.

Two masterpieces on one CD--and so different! The albums sound better than ever remastered on CD, too. You can't go wrong!

It's Retro lounge! Ditch the grouchiness you grouches!.......2007-05-20

Oh Man, This cd is so cool! I loved every ineterpretation and rendering! Hey I'm young , but I realize this is lounge and not mean't to usurp or dinegrate the original, so some of you peeps lighten-up! It's fab! These songs do make you think of times when cars were sleek and clothes actually fit people! The 60's were a mixed bag and that's what I love about this music, you could have hard rock, pop and lounge and they all co-existed...what an awesome world to have lived in. I would give this cd 10 stars if possible!

These recordings date from 1964 to 1971. During this time period, there were two kinds of "pop" music. There was the kind for teenagers, which featured the likes of the Beatles, the Doors and the Strawberry Alarm Clock. And then there was pop music for the parents of teenagers, featuring the likes of Julie London, the Letterman and the Hollyridge Strings. This CD features teenage pop songs as performed by pop artists for the older folks. Boy, talk about a style clash! Can you imagine Mel Torme singing "Sunshine Superman", or Julie London singing "Mighty Quinn"? Well, you don't have to imagine it, you can get this CD and hear it for yourself. There are some strange renditions of songs that will be familiar to anyone who ever turned on an oldies radio station. Most of the songs are instumentals, although I wouldn't call it "elevator music", for the most part. I have to make special mention of the orchestral version of "Heartbreak Hotel", which is downright spooky! Fans of "kitsch" should dig this CD.

A Veritable Smorgasbord of Bad Taste--and that's the idea!.......2003-11-12

The 1960s was the most tumultuous decade of the 20th Century. There were a great many events to commend it and condemn it. It produced the Apollo space program to put American astronauts on the Moon and some of the best original popular music as just two commendable events. Assassinations and the divisive Vietnam War were events certainly to condemn the sixties.

Listening to Capital Records' "On The Rocks, Part 1"-part of the Ultra Lounge series-- has convinced me there is something else that gave the sixties a black eye. It spawned some of the worst rendition music ever to waste valuable recording studio time.

As I mentioned before, the sixties produced some of the best popular music, and always sounded best when released by the original artists. However, this left the door open for others deluded into thinking they could take a top 40 hit and resuscitate their lagging career, or take a perfectly successful recording career and sending it into the ground.

The On The Rocks Part 1 (& Part 2) CD is a compilation of some of the worst the 1960s and 1970s had to offer in rendition music. Better examples of a total lack of judgment probably cannot be found. Take, for example, Mel Torme singing Sunshine Superman, or Peggy Lee singing "Hard Day's Night"-please! Even Julie London took leave of her senses to record "Mighty Quinn'. Most painful to listen to.

The indignities don't end there. Imagine the Hollyridge Strings performing the Theme from Shaft, or the Lettermen mis-performing the Doors tunes "Hello I Love You" and "Touch Me." Even the impeccable Nelson Riddle can step on the proverbial wet bar of soap, musically speaking of course, and produce their sad rendition of "Winchester Cathedral."

If you have a morbid curiosity or want a great gag gift for your fellow Loungers, this is definitely the disc to get.

A New Level Of Kitsch.......2003-06-14

Mel Torme singing 'Sunshine Superman'? Julie London warbling 'Quinn, The Eskimo'? Exotica Supremo Martin Denny taking on 'Incense & Peppermints'? No, you haven't gone insane, you're just listening to the ultimate curveball CD from 'Ultra-Lounge' This may be one of the most mind-warping albums I have ever heard; extremly tasteless and misguided takes on your favorite 60's pop hits by desperate loungeurs trying to be 'relevant' to 'the kids'. They miss the boat entirely, but the result is this strange hybrid; not quite lounge music, not quite rock, not really muzak...but it is (in the words of The Firesign Theatre) 'weirdly cool' . On first listening I didn't know WHAT I was hearing, but this disc has become strangely addictive...

Particular faves are a kinda science-fictiony sounding 'Shaft', Lord Sitar(!) doing a faux Indian take on 'Daydream Believer', Zacharias & his spooky violin on 'Light My Fire', and what must be the strangest 'Heartbreak Hotel' since Dread Zeppelin's...plus the vocal numbers mentioned above. If you are an auditory adventurer, and you 'get' the whole 'lounge' vibe...bend your head around this one!

I'm really in the groove, now..........1998-09-26

The British Invasion, it should be noted, contained Miss Peggy Lee. That's right, the Peggy Lee of "Fever". Peggy Lee, you see, was the 5th Beatle. This disc is evidence of that, as you hear Peggy belt out "A Hard Day's Night". Yeah, baby! Oh, and you also get a special version of "Light My Fire"--a version that I think Ed Sullivan would have approved. Come on baby, light my fire. Mel Torme, Wayne Newton--now THAT's counter-culture, man. So put on your fringe vest, those rose-colored Lennon specs, and take a step back in time to some real anit-Establishment venom!

Hanoi Rocks rock like f*!.......2006-12-14

I always liked Mike Monroe's/Hanoi Rocks' stuff back in the day when I discovered that they were almost every glam band's dirty little secret.

Hanoi Rocks was dirty and less polished back then. But 12 Shots is just great! It's polished and classy while being dirty, high energy, bluesy, sentimental and very true to it's punk/glam roots.

Get this album. You won't be disappointed.

Not sure if many know this.....But Winged Bull is actually a Hall & Oates song from their 1977 album Beauty On A Back Street.

Amazing rock tunes.......2005-01-13

I just love great rock tunes and this album is full of them. The songwriting is very good, I think they are more consistent than Guns n Roses songwriting, I mean Use Your Illusions was experimental which is good, but I like those kind of bands that stick to their formula for greatness. Hard rocking beats, great choruses, etc. THis is one of my favorite bands, up there with Wildhearts, FAith NO MOre, and Mr. Bungle. I love that lucky song. Its killer. ITs a great album, buy it NOW!!!

Great Songwriting is ck.......2004-06-04

Hanoi Rocks are back and if you don't know who they are, it doesn't matter. If you have a love for creative and high energy music, this is the album for you. It is a raspberry in your face approach to attitude and emotion based rock `n' roll.
This is the album that took 17 years to make and it's their best ever. When I got this and saw that only two of the members were back (Michael and Andy) I was skeptical, especially since most of Michael Monroe's work has been absolute crap (he even got my favorite guitarist, Steve Stevens, sound bad on their failure of a collaboration, Jerusalem Slim) and their last studio album, Two Steps From the Move, was their worse album ever by far. I was, however, quite pleasantly surprised. I would call "12 Shots" the best album to come out since AFI released Sing the Sorrow (yes, it's even better than Outkast's Grammy winner). I find it rather strange though that neither Nasty Suicide nor Sam Yaffa played on this album considering that they often collaborated with Monroe throughout the Hanoi-less years. This would seem a disappointment especially since their work on the Johnny Thunders tribute seemed to point to an all out Hanoi reunion. Fortunately, the new band performs wonderfully on this exquisite collection of songs. The absence of the original rhythm section, Sam and Razzle (RIP), is felt by the lack of any songs reminiscent of the camp classic, "Tooting Bec Wreck." This cloud definitely has a silver lining, though, as it is good to see Hanoi not recycling previous failsafe ideas like so many other bands do when they have their "reunions." Without a doubt, the classic Hanoi sound is still there, but continues to move forward. This may be due to the change in songwriting leadership. While before, almost all of their songs were written exclusively by McCoy, this time around sees Monroe taking the helm as he writes or co-writes almost all of the original songs on the album (which scared me at first considering his track record). The best song on the album by far is "In My Darkest Moment," a collaboration between the two. This song, along with "Obscured," is a testament to the fact much focus has shifted away from camp and goofiness of their original sound as showcased on Back to Mystery City, it has shifted toward depth and lyrical maturity. There are still songs like "Delirious" to give listeners are chuckle, but this album has a far more urgent sound than previous efforts.
Unfortunately, Hanoi will never get the respect they deserve because they refuse to sell out. They are deeply rooted in glam which has the biggest stigma of any genre attached to it. Fear not though, this is not some Motley Crue/Poison sounding band. While the aforementioned have obviously taken their cues from the Rocks, the eyeliner veterans are much closer in sound and attitude to Iggy Pop than Whitesnake, Great White, or any of those ozone-depleting bands. Actually the climatic buildup and depth of several of the songs remind me a bit of 1970's Springsteen. Hanoi would no doubt be much more respected if no one knew what they looked like. First of all, no self-respecting punk should be without at least one Hanoi Rocks album, as their sound is as punk as anything out there. However, Hanoi also have a tender side to them which is evident on every album (and fortunately this album didn't need yet another version of "Don't You Ever Leave Me" in order to display that). If Hanoi Rocks were to comb down their hair, stop dressing like Debbie Gibson wannabe crack [prostitutes], and reinvent their image, they would probably be sharing chart success with Jet and the Darkness, but instead they stick to their guns and lipstick.
This is a great album for people who may not be Hanoi Rocks fans or glam rock fans at all. It is highly recommended for people who like innovative and high energy artists like the Sex Pistols, Andrew WK, AFI, HIM, Outkast, early Springsteen, Meatloaf's Bat Out of Hell, Prince, Siegue Siegue Sputnik, and of course, Johnny Thunders. If you like bands that take chances and push the envelope you will love this album. Just don't look at the damned pictures and you'll be fine.

Rebirth of Rock'n Roll.......2004-04-24

This IS the "Appetite for Destruction" of 21st century, period. Just listen to the samples and make your own decision. This is a bit harder than 80's Hanoi Rocks but all the good stuff is still there and this CD is just as good as all the classical Hanoi stuff. Mark my words: real Rock'n Roll is coming back after more than a decade of commercial and gutless crap. Once again Hanoi Rocks is showing the world the direction of music.

I bought this for my dad I had to get this set because it was the only way to get the Meanwhile back at the whiskey gogo because he has the record and liked it the other disc he didn't really care for but he was happy because of the other one.

When I bought this double cd pkg, I was overjoyed because my husband had "Rocks the Folks" and "Whiskey a-go-go" on LP's and they got misplaced when we moved and he was very upset but now we have the cds. The sound quality is way better. Anyone who is a true Johnny River's fan wouldn't be disappointed with these cds.

I remember listening to this album as a kid. All the great folk songs but sung even better by Johnny Rivers. If you like folk music at all, the classics are here and they are great arrangements. I'm so glad I found this album on Amazon.com!

British Bells.......2001-11-12

A delightful carillon recording, although I think I would have enjoyed it more if I knew some of the British folk tunes played. The CD is made interesting by including five different British carillons and five carillonneurs, the best being Trevor Workman. Also included is a track of domestic clocks playing the familiar "Westminster" chimes, and the very unfamiliar "Cambridge" chimes, plus a cuckoo clock!
