3 out of 5 stars Really good, but not spectacular.......2007-01-29

I loved 11 Dreams. Well...I loved enough songs to buy it and enjoy it....and go back to it from time to time. Mercenry have a really fresh take on melodic death. They are, like others describe, a blend of Soilwork, COB, and Into Eternity...only they really have a unique take. They don't sound too copy cat like other bands.

Anyway...this new release is top notch production and great musicianship, but after a while, I am left feeling flat. Every song pretty much resembles every other one. If you listen to 1 or 2 songs, then you're like WHOA!...but if you like to listen to CD's all the way through or repeat listens, this CD loses something.

The clean vocals are very good. They are my favorite part along with the piano. My complaint is that the tempo of their songs are all the same...mid tempo. It might be nicer to see them slow things up, or get nastier...give the listener something unexpected.

All in all, I love the CD...it just feels like these guys have TONS of potential, but are just staying with what they know best. I would give this a 3.5 if I could...but I'm not quite at the 4 star range.

4 out of 5 stars Best Mercenary yet, but still missing something............2006-11-06

This is a good album. Scratch that, it's a really REALLY good album. But it's not great, amazing, or groundbreaking. The biggest change on this album from Mercenary's past releases is the absence of bassist/singer Henrik "Kral" Andersen (quit before album came out). In my own opinion, this is the best thing that has happened to this band. The songs on this album really feature lead singer Mikkel Sandager's great vocal range and delivery, providing numerous memorable hooks and some really tight harmonies, really pushing the singing aspect of this band to a new height.

And then of course there's the bad. Well, not so much the bad as much as the "under-realized". While the vocals on the album are great, the music can get rather "bleh". No real steps foward have been taken in the musical aspect from 11 Dreams, and I feel this album features at least 2, if not 3, throw away tracks. But again, it's not nessecarily a bad thing. The album drags in the middle, like many albums tend to, but the good eventually outshine the bad on this offering.

So, in conclusion, it's a 3.5, but on the high side, so I'll go with a 4. Recceomended listening: "Redefine Me", "My World Is Ending", "Soul Decision", "My Secret Window", "Hours That Remain"

4 out of 5 stars Genre-Bending Masterpiece.......2006-10-28

Now this is what metal is all about! Aggression, innovation, defying expectations - Mercenary has it all covered. My first exposure to this band was at the ProgPower USA fest in 2003, where the band's genre-bending mix of progressive and death metal hit me like a steel-toed boot to the chest. Throw Brainstorm, Tad Morose, Nevermore, Soilwork, Dark Tranquillity, and In Flames into a blender, and what comes out will sound a lot like Mercenary. Canada's Into Eternity is the only other band that comes close, but I find them a bit too sterile for my tastes. Cut to 2006 and not only is there a new Mercenary album available, but the band returned to ProgPower for another fantastic performance (two words: Pantera cover).

The Hours That Remain is another triumphant Mercenary album. Just as 11 Dreams was an improvement over an already excellent Everblack, The Hours That Remain is another step forward. Mercenary succeeds in building on their previous albums' foundations and at the same time improving their overall sound. There is still the death metal aggression that extreme metal fans crave, but it is equally matched with a progressive metal band's technical proficiency. The band continues to improve their songwriting skills (which were pretty solid to begin with), which has a lot to do with why The Hours That Remain may just be Mercenary's finest album to date.

Mercenary is the open-minded metal fan's dream come true. I truly believe that in the near future this band will be one of the dominant forces in metal.

NOTE: Early versions of The Hours That Remain came with a bonus DVD featuring interviews, behind the scenes material, and live footage. It's a great bonus to an already excellent album.

UK pressing. Emerging from the 90s as a mid-pace melodic death-thrash four piece, 2002 saw Mercenary taking a giant leap forward with the release of the album 'Everblack'. Formerly centered around songwriters Kral (bass/vocals) and Jakob (guitars), the band recruited additional heavymetal-style singer Mikkel Sandager and his brother Morten on keys - changing the band's sound drastically towards a new and rather unusual combination of melody and aggression. Taking a definite turn towards focusing on songwriting rather than riffing earned the band wide attention and praise, along with appearances at diverse festivals. After 'Everblack', the band recruited drummer Mike Park and leadguitarist Martin Buus, whose skills can be heard in the added energy on the newest release, '11 Dreams', produced by Jacob Hanson. 4 out of 5 stars An Awesome Metal cd!.......2007-04-06

This cd rocks this was the beginning of the new Band members MIKKEL SANDAGER(Lead Vocals) and Morten Sandager(Keyboards & Vocals) who were added and brought a new dimension to the band with awesome clean vox and underlying synths. It gives the Metal music some more depth..Think Soilwork mixed with Nevermore and throw some Thrash in there and you have Mercenary....Highlights on the cd are:
    Screaming from the Heavens
    Everblack
    Darkspeed
Rescue Me ( Great vocal into!! )

If you like Death, Power, Thrash Metal you'll like this pick it up!

    4 out of 5 stars Genre-bending Metal.......2006-07-08

Mercenary was the surprise (for me) from 2003's ProgPower USA event. I hadn't heard them before, so I was expecting another run of the mill prog/power metal band. Instead I heard a band that sounded like the perfect synthesis of In Flames and Tad Morose. Into Eternity is probably Mercenary's closest comparison point, though I personally have found Into Eternity to be somewhat sterile and emotionless. Mercenary blends death metal speed and vocals over progressive metal song structures and technical prowess, and adds power metal's emphasis on melody. There are also "clean" vocals, which allow the band to further cross metal's genre boundaries.
Everblack is the band's latest album, and is a high-energy disc. You won't find much in the way of ballads or acoustic passages; just plenty of fast, aggressive, technical metal. It's not a death metal album, but fans of In Flames and Soilwork will have no problem getting into this album. Prog/power purists might not be able to handle the death vocals and aggression, but the more adventurous fans might enjoy this quite a bit.

3 out of 5 stars The Hollywood sound... by way of Germany.......2006-10-28

1987's Don't Get Mad... Get Even is the second album from German rockers Victory. Rather than going for a polished AOR sound like countrymen Bonfire, Victory draws inspiration from the Hollywood hair metal scene. Their sound is melodic but slightly sleazy, and is reminiscent of Ratt meets L.A. Guns. It's not terribly original, but it's still a fun party rock album from a band that plays that style of music quite well. This is definitely a "grab a beer and turn it up" kind of album!

NOTE: The CD release of Don't Get Mad... Get Even actually features 11 tracks. In addition to the 10 listed here, the album closes with a laid back ballad called Can't Stop Missing You.

Compared with label mates like Coldcut, the Herbaliser doesn't always get a lot of attention. That's a shame, because they might just be the most interesting--and the most accessible--artists in the Ninja Tune Records camp. Working with a bevy of talented MCs--What What, the ultra-smooth woman from the Natural Elements crew; Roots Manuva; the Dream Warriors--and a number of musicians who are touring members of the band, Wherry and Teeba have made a subtle, minor classic here. Assembled from pieces they've worked on for the past few years--selections have appeared on EPs (Wall Crawling Giant Insect Breaks) and mix tapes--the mix is a seamless blend of classy dance-floor jazz and hip-hop; if it sometimes plays like a soundtrack, that's because the entire album is informed with a noir style. The duo has taken the sound it developed over the Herbaliser's prior two albums (Remedies and Blow Your Headphones) and guided it in a more refined direction on Very Mercenary. It's a treat to listen to. --Randy Silver

To let all of you who don't know, know, "What What" doesn't go by the name of "What What" any more. She can be found on mixtapes, CD's and other items under the name of Jean Grae. And for the sake of knowing, she STILL rips the mic to this day.

5 out of 5 stars The herbaliser delivers the goods.....(again!!!).......2003-10-29

Possibly wanting to avoid being `Confined' to the `Trip-Hop' tag, The Herbaliser moves more into a rough conceptual-themed Spy Thriller, with a abundance of 60's spy movie sample snippets littered throughout the album. With what could have been a one trick pony idea, works to overwhelmingly superb effect, "Mission Improbable" has female scattershot MC `What What', delivering complicated wordplay over a tasty bed of (60's inspired) uptempo hypnotic Hip-Hop beats. But really impresses is the way that the way that `The Herbaliser' can construct a sound or beat, without resorting to tired clichés, and interesting diverse. "Shattered Soul" really does show how the limitations of the Trip-Hop genre haven't even begun to become confining, it's a purely instrumental track (of which there are several on the album) and shows how beat creation can now truly be considered with (almost) the same creditability as a instrumentalist, and cements `The Herbaliser" as amongst `Ninja Tunes' finest.

4 out of 5 stars Hot Hot Hot! All about the horns.......2003-01-12

Fans are raving about the rappers on this album but I have to say - The Herbaliser team has got its groove on!
It's all about the horns. Andy Ross and his boys positively blow me away. Subtlety goes along way, and WHEN are these guys touring the U.S.A. again?

5 out of 5 stars smooth creamy goodness.......2003-01-06

this album by some of the greatest master craftsmen of the hip hop art ever to come out of the US will offer you the smoothest samples, creamiest cuts and tranquilizingly relaxing beats youve ever enjoyed. What What's and Bahamadia's vocals (together with other great mc's) will soothe your soul and shut your eyes in peace. If you enjoy creamy female lyrics and know what intelligent hip hop is, even better. Put it on when sparking a fatty at home or driving to work; Ninja Tunes prime prodigies will caress your aural senses with the greatest of eloquence and the warmest musical arrangements in Hip Hop. The Herbaliser's Very Mercenary cut will never get old. trust me.

4 out of 5 stars This is a great album.......2000-06-27

This cd is a great album to listen to and chill out. This cd is better than most of the hip hop albums out there. Mellow, laid back beats, a worthy effort by herbaliser and a must have for fans of hip hop. Tracks by what what are the highlights of the album. No offense to the female gender, but many female rappers can not rap. Fortunately, rapper what what seems to be the exception. Her rhymes are smooth and for the most part unbelievable. She is phenomenal! The instrumental tracks like goldrush are very good. I don't know why other commenters compare herbaliser to dj shadow, as they have totally different styles.

This CD is a Masterpiece from this Danish band....From the Clean powerful vocals to the harsh dark growls, to the Synth filling in the gaps, while the Guitar and bass are chugging along with the awesome drums! A Combo of Melodic Death, Power Metal, Thrash, and just plain Heavy Metal every song on this cd rocks...not one bad song. Highlights are: World Hate Center, 11 Dreams, Firesoul ! wow.. if you love Metal pick this up

      4 out of 5 stars I'm sold.......2006-12-24

I won't go into a point-by-point technical review, I'll just keep it simple. I found this band by chance and upon hearing the song '11 Dreams', I immediately bought this cd. Most of the songs are excellent with my favorites being '11 Dreams', 'Firesoul' and 'World Hate Center'. However, there are a few throw-aways. 'Times Without Changes' is a ballad I could do without. 'Sharpen the Edges' is a decent b-side, but gets old quickly. I am at a loss for words for the track 'Music Non Stop'...it's a REALLY cheesy pop rock song that makes me wonder "what the....?"
I have not heard any of Mercenary's older stuff, but I understand that this cd was a new direction for their sound. You can pretty much sum up the foundation of this direction by listening to the songs '11 Dreams'and 'Firesoul' . If you like those songs, you'll enjoy this album and definitely their latest release "The Hours That Remain"(which will get 5 stars from me).

5 out of 5 stars This Album Is Epic.......2006-11-03

Mercenary is a highly underrated band that should be recognized for it's accomplishments. 11 Dreams is an incredible album that few can match, Mercenary created a iconic level album with this release and all that appreciate good metal and good music in general, need to pick this album up.

4 out of 5 stars great new band.......2006-11-03

      5 out of 5 stars This is a classic........2006-08-20

Great album. Melodic with very strong choruses. This is metal, but if you took out the double bass drumming and the relatively infrequent use of extreme vocals, you'd have something closer to a progressive hard rock record. Great songs, lyrics, music and variety combine for what is a must-have for fans of melodic metal. This is one that your girlfriend might even like. But don't be put off by that. This is a great METAL album. I llke Carcass, Morbid Angel, Deicide, and many other extreme metal bands. Although this is not death metal, it most definitely is metallic. So if you like melodic metal, you need this.

5 out of 5 stars Death metal with a doom edge.......2007-04-19

Easily one of the best death metal albums ever
if you get tired of hearing the same old thing in the
death metal genre. Really doomy edge, with enough groove
and interesting twists on the usual stuff to keep
      things moving. Great album.

4 out of 5 stars Slow Grinding War Metal.......2004-06-22

Bolt Thrower play a very basic style of Death/Grind/War Metal. I really enjoy all their releases, but quickly get bored with them. The problem is, there is little variation between songs and albums. Once you hear one track, you have pretty much heard the album. Mercenary has the most variation in song structure of all Bolt Thrower releases. This makes it more entertaining over the course of the entire album. A brutal release by a very talented band and I think any fan of BT or Extreme Metal will enjoy Mercenary.

5 out of 5 stars brutality with melody \m/.......2004-02-26

OMG, when u hear bolt thrower u have to headbang, there music is beautiful. and chaotic all in one and the pictures it portrays is BRUTAL !!!!!!!!! Pick up this album if u like death metal or even a bit of power metal, the riffs they write can relate to a pantera song called walk.

1 out of 5 stars BORING AND REPETITIVE.......2003-06-11

This CD was disappointing since the previous drummer was replaced that might be why this album suffers from repetition. The only song that I really liked was (No Guts,No Glory)and the other songs didn't offer much and sounded all the same.

      4 out of 5 stars cool Grind/death/heavy metal.......2002-12-20

War is said to be the most cliche, used up, and tired subject in Heavy Metal. Bolt Thrower may have you forget that notion, especially after hearing such songs as "Zeroed," "Laid to Waste," and "No Guts, No Glory." Bolt Thrower mix in some great powerful melodies that don't take away from an image of battle portrayed in their music. The powerful double-base drumming is used perfectly, it is not something heard throughout the album non-stop, like such Grindcore bands as Mortician, Nasum, etc. This gives the music even more power. The lyrics are strong, meaningful, and not as violent as one would think. If you like their fellow "brit-core" scene members Benediction, I'm sure you'll enjoy this band and this album.

This one is a banger like every other Hollow Tip release. He's even got the thug lord himself Yukmouth on this. Some of my favorites are: Witness the Life, Chipz, All Night, Savival, and Mercenaries. There is also a Mercenary DVD. Showing Sac-Town, beautiful women, and concert footage. Hollow continues to put it down and represent. He is the hardest rapper from Sac.
