5 out of 5 stars One of the best of the Masterworks series.......2007-07-06

Brilliant Classics' "Masterworks" series, if you can get them cheaply (and currently they go for about $1/CD from Amazon's France Web site), are a great way to amass a significant library of the works of several great computers. The production values and the performances themselves are uneven, and the interpretations are not always historically-informed (unlike the bulk of Brilliant's "Complete Editions" of the works of Bach and Mozart). But there are numerous gems in the rough in The Masterworks, and the economic value is unsurpassed, even if you were to throw away half of the CDs in each set.

You're unlikely to throw away much of this Schubert collection though. This seems to be the finest of the Masterworks sets, with a succession of solid, often first-rate performances of most of the major Schubert works. Here's what you get:

- The symphonies, performed by The Hanover Band in a historically-informed style. Very interesting performances perhaps marred by an odd recording balance that makes the woodwinds sound distant. Takes up four CDs
- The six Latin masses. Also the Deutsche Messe in the version with wind instruments. Five CDs in all
- Edison Denisov's completion of Schubert's unfinished dramatic work Lazarus (2 CDs, Helmuth Rilling's premier recording)
- The last four string quartets (including the Quartettsatz) with #9 thrown in. Also the octet, piano quintet ("The Trout"), string quintet and both piano trios. In short all the canonical chamber works. Performances are strong, and well recorded
- Two CDs of violin/piano duets, including Op. 137 and Op. 162
- 19 of the 21 "canonical" piano sonatas (missing #7 and #12) as well as the Moments Musicaux, Impromptus, German Dances, Wanderer Fantasy and several other piano works, 11 CDs in all. As with the chamber music, the performances and recordings are strong, often stunning
- Two CDs of piano duets, including the Divertissements and D. 617
- Song cycles: Die Schöne Müllerin, Winterreise, Schwanengesang, and four CDs of standalone songs, including such "standards" as Erlkönig and Gretchen am Spinnrade. The singers are a bit uneven here, ranging from standouts Robert Holl, Deitrich Fischer-Dieskau and John Shirley-Quirk to the somewhat shrill Arleen Augér

Missing from the collection is Rosamunde, and a number of famous songs: Die Forelle (The Trout), Death and the Maiden, Ellens Gesang III (the so-called Ave Maria, D. 839), Der Hirt auf dem Felsen and Der Wanderer. But you do have almost all the important instrumental works, and most of the vocal works generally considered to be essential, with some padding added in the form of minor works such as the parochial Deutsche Messe, the German Dances, and the modernist-informed completion of Lazarus by the 20th Century Russian composer Denisov.

As with the other Masterworks sets, there are no program notes. You'll need to do your own research. Answers.com is a good starting point for Schubert compositions. There are also no song texts or translations provided, so again you'll need to track down your own. Try "The Lied and Art Song Texts Page" for lieder lyrics and translations. Hunt down a good price on this collection, browsing one of Amazon's European sites if necessary, and treat yourself to many hours of lovely music for the cost of a modest night out.

1 out of 5 stars Will not buy this.......2007-03-16

I can't see D965 or D945 on this 40 disks worth of Schubert. Bizarre! There are so many great songs missing it scares me.

4 out of 5 stars Worth it!.......2006-12-19

One of the best in "The Masterpices" series. Many of the discs (the symphonies in particular) were licensed from Nimbus and other full-line labels. Not all that long ago these discs would have set you back $18 to $20 a piece. That said, I still wouldn't part with my Hyperion collection. 40 CD's at this price... you can't go wrong.

4 out of 5 stars Great way to jumpstart a schubert collection.......2006-12-19

Hartmut Holl, Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, Stephanie Brown, and Jaime Laredo as well as the Stuttgart Bach Collegium performing Schubert are hardly "left-behind artists and ensembles" as the previous naysayer states. These are licensed from major label releases and from the original masters issued at a bargain price, especially for the number of discs you get. Sound quality ranges from good to excellent. Good for all Schubertians and anyone who wants to jumpstart a Schubert collection.

1 out of 5 stars Better to Pick a Few First-rate Performances.......2006-11-14

This is a bargain in dollar/listening time ratio, but who cares? There are many second-rate performances by left-behind artists and ensembles. Obviously the economics of resurrecting disks that don't require royalties has been the driving factor of selection. (On the other hand, the complete edition boxed sets of Bach and Mozart, which you'll find if you look, are stupendous successes artistically.)

    .
Of over 600 songs, Fischer-Dieskau and Gerald Moore realized over three-quarters: these are those. Gerald Moore was of course as important to this project as Fischer-Dieskau.

    DGG's sound is excellent.

This set is a remarkable document of art.

5 out of 5 stars Great Metal Cd!!!.......2005-12-14

Apophis is a very good death metal group. This is everything you would expect in a death metal group. Every song on this cd is good. The other guy that wrote a review about this cd being to hardcore lol what a joke. Why would you buy a death metal cd if your not looking for hardcore and heavy metal? I highly recommend this cd to anyone that likes death metal.

Keep up the good work Apophis!!!

        2 out of 5 stars Awful.......2002-07-12

I bought this 'cause it was really cheap and thought I might give it a try. I read somewhere that it was similar to Nile. Well, besides some imagery (like the ancient Egyptian thing on the cover) I didn't notice much resemblance. The music could pass as decent and slightly interesting, but it's hard to get past those horrible vocals. Totally uninspired, underpracticed, cookie-cutter "death" vocals. I haven't even listened to the whole thing all the way through 'cause I just can't tolerate it. Two stars just because it IS heavy.

5 out of 5 stars An encyclopedic collection of Schubert songs, Volume 2.......2005-10-26

Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau (born 1925) is considered by many to be the foremost authority on Schubert Lieder for the male voice in our time. He likely made more recordings of this area of music than any other singer, having not only this 9 disc set, but another 9 disc set (Volume 1) for DG, the three complete song cycles: "Schwanengesang", "Die Schone Mullerin" and "Winterreise" (DG, Volume 3 of Fischer-Dieskau's Lieder edition), plus a 6 disc set of Schubert Lieder for EMI, also with Gerald Moore. Figure in the earlier recordings from the late 1940s, and live recitals on such labels as Orfeo, and there are ALOT of Fischer-Dieskau Schubert lieder recordings available.

Critics of vocal recitals and lieder may have other opinions, but I think this is as fine a collection as any. I keep this, like Volume 1, to be able to refer to a given song, not to listen to disc after disc of Schubert Lieder in one sitting, even though all are delightful works. Fischer-Dieskau manages to make Schubert's simple, strophic songs sound like great masterpieces, perhaps greater than they really are. And pianist Gerald Moore is an excellent partner: Moore and Fischer-Dieskau work as one, in perfect sync.

Keep in mind these are all songs for male voice, and not the complete Schubert songs. DG should be commended for releasing these recordings on CD and keeping them before the public. If you are really a Schubert completist, consider also the complete Hyperion Schubert Edition, with Graham Johnson, piano, and singers such as Lucia Popp, Peter Schreier, Janet Baker, Stephen Varcoe, Maragaret Price, Ian Bostridge, Martyn Hill singing all the 700+ songs Schubert composed in his short lifetime (1797-1828; Schubert's first lieder were composed about 1815). (The Hyperion Schubert edition is available in Great Britain for about $250 for 40 discs, if you cannot find it in the US).

For further comment, please see my remarks for DG, Volume 1 of Schubert Lieder by Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau.

5 out of 5 stars Make up your mind to this journey........2001-02-07

Since this set of Schubert lieder (3 boxes, 21 cds in all) has become a legedary classic, I don't think I should make any comment. But just a suggestion to those who want to embark on these discs. Make up your mind on this journey. On facing such a tome record arranged and sung chronically, it's useless and wrong only to listen to some famous lieder or discs or just listen randomly. You should spare a long period of time, begin by listening from the very first disc to the last disc. And, during the period do not listen to any lied of other composers. Then gradually, lied by lied, disc by disc, you will forget this is Fischer-Diskau and Moore---This is a real life of a great soul! You are really touching and breathing with a great soul! Feel the sound of schubert, feel his struggle, his emotion, his feeling, his hate and love. Feel how those youthful spontaneous and raw lieder gradually developed into fully ripened masterpieces. Such wonderful experience belongs only to really patient listeners.

It took me about 2 full weeks to listen to the whole 21 discs. Fischer-Diskau and Moore chose the "Abschied(Farewell)" to be the last lieder read (this song happened to be the only lied of Schubert to be recite with piano accompaniment, and which was composed during his final years). Thus the whole hundreds of lieder, or the whole life of Schubert, ended on this lied, farewell to the earth. It began with "Leb wohl, du schoene Erde (Goodbye, you beautiful Earth)". I will forever remember when I finally came into this lied, on the first words of Diskau's "Leb wohl, du schoene Erde" I trembled and cried from the very first note to the last note. My god, it's untouchable granduer.

5 out of 5 stars LAS ROSAS DEL JARDIN.......2000-05-03

Brigitte Fassbänder's rich contralto voice suits this particular program of songs especially well, since most of them deal with the subject of death in one form or another. The disc opens with one of Schubert's most famous and best loved "hits"--Death and the Maiden. As usual in this series, Graham Johnson accompanies to perfection, and supplies excellent notes about each item. --David Hurwitz

        5 out of 5 stars Spectrally fascinating.......2004-05-18

Some voices possess such amazingly distinctive character and style! Brigitte Fassbaender is definitely one such voice. Her haunting performance of Mussorgsky's "Songs and Dances of Death" had set me on a journey of discovery. The peerless quality that Ms. Fassbaender has for depicting the darker side of beauty has been consistently delivered. Her Brangane, alongside the achingly superlative Margaret Price's Isolde, is taut with emotion and redolent with beauty. It must therefore have been cold logic or supernatural omen that led me to discover that both these enchanting singers each have a programme of lieder in the Hyperion Schubert Edition. Dame Price's programme of songs is based on the theme of night whereas Ms. Fassbaender's is centred in the theme of death.

Dame Price and Ms. Fassbaender both share an alluring vocal quality: their voices are consistently sweet and rich (respectively...though BOTH are ravishingly beautiful) but interspersed with moments of celestial purity. Take track 12 here "Lied des Orpheus". Listen to the change in colouration where she sings the words "Klage" in the first line of the 5th verse. Or again in track 14 where, after introducing her menacing reference to the cold north, she then steals your very soul with the word "tragen" in the 5th verse. Listen to Dame Price's CD and you will find a similar appeal.

Graham Johnson's accompaniment is not only beautifully played but perfectly complements his singer. His sense of control is clearly well-studied but not artificial in the least. There is a natural feel. The sound quality is pristine and the very slight echo in the acoustics adds to the proper "graveyard" feel of the work (see the picture on the cover...very pensive!).

Finally, let me just say (with GREAT emphasis) that despite all this talk of death, this is a performance that will hold your rapt attention. A tried and proven stunner. We are experiencing the age of one who will be regarded as a great legend in the future. For me, she has already achieved that status. I highly recommend this disc, together with Dame Margaret Price's sealed performance of nocturnal bliss!

5 out of 5 stars Powerful and Convincing.......2002-10-20

What stands out in Fassbaender's singing is the absolute authenticity of her performance. So many Lieder singers are concerned with their tone and other factors extraneous to the authentic identification with their character. On this album Fassbaender totally identifies with her characters and lets them speak. Her singing is powerful and flawless. The outstanding songs on this album are Lied des Orpheus, a song I hadn't been familiar with previously. The story is very moving and Fassbaender renders them absolutely convincingly. Das Zugenlocklein is another new song for me. Beautifully sung and played. As for Der Tod und das Madchen I have heard Fischer-Dieskau's version previously and his rendering cannot be surpassed. Overall, this is a fabulous album and I cannot recommend it more highly.

5 out of 5 stars Very Jumpy Young Schubert.......2001-12-03

There has been a lot of unfair things said about Adrian Thompson for this CD, and at first listen, that may appear justified; however one need only to look at the "D" numbers, which attempt to put Schubert's song in chronological order, to realize that these are very early Schubert songs, and although they are enjoyable, one can sense that he has not quite mastered the range of the tenor voice (in the very first song, the voice is pushed to almost comical extremes as the distance between high and low seems quite unreasonable). It is this same quality of theses songs that makes Thompson's high, youthful sounding tenor so appropriate for this recording.

Also, enjoy the Don Gayseros trio and look for the "Schubert Boogie" in the last track. It's quite starteling.

**This review is for Volume 12, despite it somehow appearing under a Volume 11**

        5 out of 5 stars Terrific, dark.......2001-02-25

Those looking for the darker side of Schubert will find it here. My favorite of the series (along with Margaret Price).

        5 out of 5 stars Lieder remix........2003-08-30

This is stretching the art of "interpretation" to the edge. We know this music isn't supposed to sound like this, but it is wonderful all the same. Fischer-Dieskau's singing is extreme in many ways, with its shouting, its hacking of the lines, all these edges and turns. Richter's playing extracts all kinds of weird effects from Scubert's writing (listen how he continuously varies the accompaniment on "Abschied"). The result is eerie ("Der Wanderer"), and incredibly contemporary.

        5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Lied-singing and playing.......2002-01-11

This recording testifies to the collaboration between the undeniably most famous interpreter of Lieder and one of the finest interpreter's of Schubert's piano music of the 20th century.

Fischer-Dieskau - though he still sings with ample understanding of the text and unrivalled diction - has been heard to greater advantage on ealier recordings. He had - in 1976 - lost a bit of the natural fluidity of singing and legato which are so apparent on his earlier recordings. But it is maybe only when you compare Fischer-Dieskau with Fischer-Dieskau you notice slightly deterioating powers. I don't think any barytone today can equal the sense of "presence" and understanding of the nature of Lied-singing expressed on this recording.

What truly makes this selection of Lieder the one to single out is the contribution of Sviatoslav Richter on the piano. Richter's playing is so entirely musical, the way he carries the music forward, moving it from one sound-level ("Klang-plateau") to the next, is fantastic. Listen to an very expressive sense of rhythm (pulse) in "Im Fruhling", the way he plays that will make you cry.

But first and foremost this is a recording that gives the notion of "partnership" between singer and pianist new meaning. Fischer-Dieskau's singing is carried by Richter's playing in an intuitive and (so it sounds) almost spiritual understanding of what the partner is doing.

The fact that we are dealing with a "live" recording only adds extra excitement to a truly electrifying interpretation, and one is reminded again how important the "partnership" between singer and pianist is.

5 out of 5 stars The best Schubert-lieder singing I've ever heard, anywhere.......1998-09-29

While it's nice that Kurt Moll is big enough to sing opera and make lots of money, this CD shows clearly that his soul is the soul of a lieder singer. Every sound he makes--every whisper, every consonant--is interesting and intelligent. And unlike some better-known lieder singers (such as Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau), Kurt Moll does not indulge in sentimental exaggeration nor play circus tricks with his vibrato. Just straight, intelligent, beautiful singing and sincere dramatic interpretation from a serious man with a terrific contrabassoon-like instrument.

Pianist Cord Garben is a genius. .
