5 out of 5 stars Makes 2 great albums even better .......2007-07-09

Nico is sort of an acquired taste. If you've already acquired it and have The Marble Index and The Desert Shore, should you buy this? Yes. First of all, Rhino has done their usual fantastic job making the sound quality as good as possible. I didn't think The Marble Index sounded that good on the previous edition of the CD. It does now. It's just magical. Second, The Marble Index now includes Nico's unadorned original takes that were later treated by John Cale. Freed from additional passes through recording equipment, Nico's vocals sound rich, expansive and wonderful. I don't pretend to compare the 2 versions, as both are great, I just like having version A and version B.

5 out of 5 stars Sepulchral, sublime..........2007-04-25

The review by Charles is fairly informative and accurate, so I won't attempt to say much beyond the fact that it is great that a label has seen fit to give the grand remastered reissue treatment with bonus tracks galore to these classic albums. I have bought both of these albums at least three times each over the course of my life: wearing out the original US pressings in the 70s, replacing them with the import vinyl reissues in the 80s, and then the CD versions in the 90s. But this is such a lovely package I don't mind spending the money again on this great music. The added alternate tracks are well worth owning if you already know the original albums: the Marble Index outtakes are first-rate and the Desertshore demos provide a new perspective on that material. The Marble Index still measures up as one of the spookiest records ever recorded. The liner notes and booklet are lovingly and intelligently put together. My single complaint is that I dearly wish they had made one of these discs a CD-ROM or included a DVD so that they could have included the video for the song "Evening Of Light". That video is dizzyingly brilliant, and seldom seen (there was a clip of it in NICO ICON which you can find on YouTube, but it would be great to see the whole video)...

5 out of 5 stars Timeless.......2007-03-17

Nico had three distinct phases in her musical career:

- The Velvet Underground and her first solo effort, featuring many of the musicians from the former;

- the three albums from the late 60s through early 70s (two of which are featured here) along with 1974's The End; and

- everything that came thereafter (many of which were live albums and products of her relentlessly touring).

Briefly, there's not much I can say about the early period that readers aren't already familiar with (or you probably wouldn't be reading this). The later material generally has not garnered much in the way of critical acclaim, but this was due to the fact that many were "unofficial" releases and not really meant to be heard.

The Frozen Borderline: 1968 - 1970 not only re-releases two of her best three albums, but with a plentitude of additional material from these recording sessions. At the time of their original release, they basically went unheard (as unforutately will probably still be the case now). Critics were quite harsh with these Gothic and what they called "depressing" tunes, not realizing then that they had a timelessness about them that holds up all these years. Whereas many albums from the 60s sound horribly dated, Nico wrote music that not only defied the time period from which they came, but all that were to come thereafter.

Interestly, liner notes indicate that four additional tracks were written and recorded for the first of the two albums, The Marble Index, but were deleted because the producers thought that no one could stand listening to more than 30 minutes of this kind of music. How fortunate we are to have the complete album now. And beyond that, 8 of the 9 original tracks are "repeated" via different versions that bring an interesting study to the development of the album.

The second album is Desertshore, the perfect follow-up to The Marble Index, and in many respects, a continuation of the same. The bonus tracks are invaluable... Nico, unaccompanied on demo versions. How rare it is to hear Nico this way... just her voice and the mysterious harmonium that she played! This gives a genuine insight to what she had intended. This isn't to say that John Cale's incredible instrumentation and his presence overall are not great additions to the final products, because indeed they are. In many respects, these albums represent a collaboration between the two, which in part made these albums as great as they are. However, the inclusion of the Nico-only demos serve to show that the original critics were wrong... that Cale didn't write these albums, Nico did, while he enhanced them by adding his magic.

Rounding out the package is an exceptionally informative booklet, although the "rare" photographs certainly would have been better served with additional pages so that they could have been larger. Another quibble is the placement of the "hidden track" at the end of the second disc. One has endure over 5 minutes of silence before this outtake from The Marble Index is finally heard.

Actually, these are probably the most difficult albums to review as there is nothing to compare them to. They are so utterly unique. In fact, this is one of the reasons why they are so timeless. There is nothing like them at this point in time and probably never will be. The best one can do is assure those considering purchasing this set that your money will not be wasted. Also, any "complete" collection of Nico's best work would also have to include The End, where she is backed by the likes of John Cale, Brian Eno and Phil Manzanera... certainly a forgotten masterpiece.

5 out of 5 stars If you don't like it at first, give it another try.......2004-05-11

Although the CrŸxshadows are among my favourite bands, I have never enjoyed any releases of theirs upon the first hearing. It's always taken two listenings to get to the eventual state of adoration. I think it's quite possible that this is true for other fans or even first-time listeners of the band- If you're not completely enamoured of Frozen Embers by the third listening, you most likely will feel the same about the other albums. This was my first of their CDs, an esteemed member of my CD rack, and a learning experience. You can't always judge a CD by hearing it once.

    5 out of 5 stars Amazing.......2004-02-06

This CD is extraordinary. You can feel the emotion pouring out from each song. This is definately a masterpiece. Rogue and the Cruxshadows have outdid themselves again.

5 out of 5 stars between the fire and the ice.......2004-02-01

Few bands can create successful re-mix EPs that you want to listen to over and over, but CXS have done it.Even if you dont like remixes but it for the glorious acoustic version of "Winterborn".

5 out of 5 stars More than just a single...........2004-02-01

The Cruxshadows continue to reward their fans with great music, and this cd is no exception. While waiting for Ethernaut, this cd filled in beautifully. Winterborn is truly the most wonderful song I've ever heard and my life is better because of it. I love Dance Floor Metaphor - it makes me want to get up and dance! The remixes of winterborn and return are wonderful too, I love hearing the songs I love in a new and interesting way. Definitely worth the money!

5 out of 5 stars Best. CD. Ever........2004-01-31

This is one of my all time FAVORITE cd's. I bought this at a whim from the Crüxshadows stand at Dragon*Con last year. They were playing it in the halls, and I just couldn't keep still upon hearing it. It makes ya wanna dance. :D
Winter Born is like my all time favorite song.
The only gripe I have about this CD is that most of it is remixes of Winter Born and Coming Home. I prefer to listen to it in two parts, rather than it all together, because then Winter Born will get eternally stuck in my head for days at a time. o_o
But yeah. This CD rocks! Dance Floor Metaphor is also one of my favorites on this CD.

3 out of 5 stars Average but normal Obituary.......2007-06-30

I like Obituary. I really do. The only thing holding them back is the same songs over and over. This sounds very similar to "The End Complete", production and all. Allen West's solos have gotten downright BORING. I don't think he has any talent at playing lead.

The one saving grace about this album is that Trevor Peres can come up with pretty decent riffs. They aren't the best; however, they get the job done. The drumming is normal for Donald Tardy, nothing spectacular, yet, nothing underwhelming either. The vocals are even more distinguishible.

I don't hate this album, I just had higher expectations of it. If you like Obituary, get it. If you are trying to get into them, get "Cause of Death" instead.

4 out of 5 stars Ben Stubbs is Mental.......2006-06-29

I just heard this new album by obituary and I was more then apt to dismiss it...as I have found the last few obituary releases to be less then inspired...However the time off apparently did them good because this album blasts... that is all there is to it folks. If you like old school death metal, then this is for you. I noticed that Ben Stubbs review of this album has him him saying "blah blah they should try something new blah blah"... well to a point I agree.. some death metal bands do get stuck in a rut.. but I think he is missing the point. Fans want to hear obituary, not some band who used to be obituary. They have a definitive sound that not only turned me on to death metal but what I have missed in the "new breed" death metal that is out now. Uninspired, people just screaming with no real feeling... When Tardy screams you get the feeling that his emotions are involved and that he doesnt take this lightly.. that is what I like about the band...If you want something new Ben listen to any one of a million new bands and keep your trap shut about this legendary band.. This album is worth the buy.

    5 out of 5 stars Nice.......2006-05-25

I like to try out new bands, and just happened to see Obituary's "Frozen in Time" while at the store. I picked it up on a whim not even knowing who Obituary was. I am happy with my choice.

This is good Death Metal, and I would recommend this to anyone who likes Death Metal. I don't really know what to say, reviewing music is hard for me... All I can say is that I can't think of any problems I have with this album.

3 out of 5 stars Frozen in time indeed. Doesn't match their early releases........2006-05-21

I had high hopes for this album. Now that I think about it, I have no idea why. After all, I didn't really enjoy much that Obituary did after the classic "Cause of Death" album. Even the hugely popular "The End Complete" album is overrated in my opinion, and "Cause of Death" is only as brilliant as it is due to James Murphy's guitar work. Since he appears only on that album, why on Earth did I expect this to be as good? Well, hindsight is a wonderful thing.

Obituary is back from the dead to release another standard death metal album, filled with typically rhythmic, repetitive riffs, crunching yet simple drumming and the vocal extremities of John Tardy. Right from the first few seconds, this is undeniably Obituary, which will please many long waiting fans. Everything is as it was a decade ago without even the slightest chance taken, which is why I find this album so redundant. It has the same sort of lyrics, the same sort of ordinary solos (now that's where I really miss James Murphy's input) and exactly the same feeling as past Obituary outings. They even brought Scott Burns out of retirement to produce the album, which is a sure sign of being scared to change. I've heard all this before! Maybe there is nobody else that sounds exactly like this, but cloning your own work is only slightly better than cloning someone else's. In it's favour is the typically excellent artwork and a crunchy, worthy production.

But I'm going to assume that this is just the album that gets Obituary back on the map. A release to let everyone know that they are back and they can still do it. I really hope they try to create a refreshing album filled with some sort of creativity next time, so I don't have this 35 minute session of deja vu. This is just too simple and these guys could have written it in their sleep. "Frozen in Time" indeed!

5 out of 5 stars THE CD THAT TURNED ME ONTO OBITUARY!.......2006-05-07

I actually really didn't know who Obituary was until I heard their album Frozen in Time the first song that I heard from this band was "insane" which is an incredibly great song. After I heard this album I researched this band and I really liked them now their not only my favorite band ,but I also have bought all of their albums and all of them our great. What I really like about this cd is the slow riffs and John Tardy's low growl.Every musician in Obituary our all very talented. This is definately a death metal classic and all of the songs our top notch so if you don't already own it buy it it's GREAT!

5 out of 5 stars A Beautiful Haunting Ballad From ROL I Give it 10 Stars!!!.......2005-01-31

I love this song. It is so beautiful and is my favorite from the very beautiful Ray OF Light Album. This song went to number 2. The second remix is a slower version of the first one. The remixes are excellent especially the 3rd one which is a fast one that you will defianetly dance to. The song talks about emotions and how we are sometimes so Frozen that we can do not show our emotions or try to hide them. The video is absoluely amazing with her in the desert and so the live perforance of it that she did on the Drowned World Tour dressed up in a beautiful Giesha dress and her short hair black! I highley recommend this album if you want to be truley moved by this song and if you are a Maddy maxi CD collector!

5 out of 5 stars A Must Own Madonna Maxi-Single........2003-12-04

Like the album's second single, "Ray of Light", this maxi contains the album version followed by three remixes.
    1. ALBUM VERSION: The music and lyrics of Madonna and Patrick Leonard, her longtime collaborator, responsible for "Like a Prayer" among others, with the techno-ambience of William Orbit creates a potent combination. It's at its core a simple pop song, but the complexity of the arrangement is just amazing, and the warmth of the strings arranged by Craig Armstrong are quite compelling.

    2. STEREO MC'S MIX: How do you mix an almost perfect song? This mix puts a funk beat to it, for a surprisingly good interpretation. I love a remix that works as a dance mix, but doesn't have the typical club beats, and this is certainly it.

    3. EXTENDED CLUB MIX: Victor Calderone has done many a traditional club mix of Madonna's recent ouevre, and does another highly enjoyable job with this one. I do appreciate that he takes out the thumping bass on occasion in favor of a synth-based interpretation of the song's string arrangements. Good dance mix.

    4. MELTDOWN MIX: This is courtesy co-producer William Orbit, and this is basically an extended fantasia on the album version, but with enough new beats and instruments to make it quite interesting and cool.

5 out of 5 stars The new Madonna.......2002-11-06

With this song she proves that she grew as an artist. Her voice is much better and the song itself sounds also "grown up".
It's an electronica ballad, produced by William Orbit.
The remixes sound different from each other. That's very rare. On the european version there's one mix more so you rather buy that .

    5 out of 5 stars Great Remixes.......2001-12-30

The song FROZEN is a beautiful ballad filled with texturized beats and beautiful vocals. The lyrics are poetic and beautiful. With the remixes, we find it all thrown together into a storm that builds to a crescendo of emotion, which is delivered by Madonna's beautiful vocals. All of the remixes on this CD are well worth the price, FROZEN is a great song to have remixed and these are just worth the money!

4 out of 5 stars Frozen is good, Club Mix is not.......2001-12-14

Frozen is a great song and the Stereo MC's remix is fantastic! However, the Club mix is awfull! Madonna's ballads should NEVER be made into dance versions (with the exception of Love Don't Live Here Anymore and WIFLFAG, which are great!) This club mix of Frozen is by far the worst remix by Victor Calderone. I don't know why Madonna keeps recruiting him, all his remixes sound the same! All in all, buy this, if only for the album version! The third remix is OK...

    5 out of 5 stars a jackhammer meets a chainsaw.......2005-12-15

This makes perfect background music to a fatal car accident. It sounds like listening to a broken radio with your skull ripped open. I cant listen to this every day but I keep it within easy reach for whenever I think that Im getting too mellow.

    5 out of 5 stars Machine gun.......2005-06-03

Do you like your ears scrambled? Well if so, the quickness of this album is astounding. Polyrhythms of a great sort allow this band to have a drum maschine playing over 2000 BPM...if you subdivide each second into four, that would be 240 BPM, now take that x10. Wee. Wrist breaking guitar grind riffs make this album insane musically. The awesomeness of Scott Hull truly shows on this album, think of his vocal style as shouting the funniest crap ever. Ie "Your grandmother is a panty P*ssing D*ke Wh*re." this album will make you laugh, and maybe even cry at points (due to the comedy). I personally love this band to death. Pick this album up, you won't be dissappointed. Shred it!

Produced by John Fryer (Him, Paradise Lost, Cradle Of Filth), Lacrimas Profundere's latest, Filthy Notes for Frozen Hearts is a masterful concoction of bittersweet melodies, heavy rockin' riffs and the band's signature sorrowful lyrics; the perfect balance between pure melancholy and absolute anger. At times aggressive but always lively, Lacrimas Profundere are ready to claim the throne of Gothic Rock/Metal! The Ltd. Ed. digipak version contains a bonus track and `making of' the Again It's Over video.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent dark & gloomy hard rock!.......2007-07-09

I had heard of this group for a while, but i delayed in checking them out, mostly due to the name. i thought they would be singing in a language other than english, which i don't prefer. They are from Germany, but do sing in english. I wouldn't say the vocalist is identical to Peter Steele of Type O Negative, but fans of TON will definitely love the similarities of his voice. Most of the songs are radio-friendly in length (3-4 minutes), and more uptempo than TON, but his voice is so dark & gothic that i can't help but compare the two, although the musical styles have significant differences. The clean guitar picking parts (and even acoustic guitars) add an elegant atmosphere to the overall feel of the album as a whole. i have since gone back & purchased their other albums, and in my opinion, this one is by far the best. This group has matured not only in style but also ability through their career. i look forward to the next release.

4 out of 5 stars This is certainly the best of Lacrimas Profundere .......2006-12-15

    All Thou it is clear that they are not musical geniuses I can't ignore the great vocals and the raw emotions in the lyrics. If you are into songs that take pleasure in the darkness and relish the sadness of ones soul then you most hear My Mescaline and do not hesitate on baying their other material;

5 out of 5 stars The Best of Albert Collins.......2007-05-04

I've owned this album since it was released in 1981 and it still gets constant rotation on my phono (yes, still have one), and on my CD player. It has stood the test of time. Best cuts are "I've got that feeling" and "Cold Cuts."

Both of these songs are about as good a synthesis of blues and funk as you can put together. Albert Collins and Johnny B Gaynor lay down a groove that you cannot ignore. This album belongs in the collection of every blues/funk/R&B/soul fan.

5 out of 5 stars The Master of the Telecaster.......2001-10-31

Albert toured extensively during this time and the Union Bar in Mpls. was a usual stop. I was lucky to attend these shows and many others featuring Albert and his band.
His shows began with the band warming up with Casey Jones (drums) or A.C. Reed (sax) taking vocals. When the crowd was good and ready, Casey would lead into the instrumental "Frosty". After building up fury, he would announce "Ladies and Gentleman, here for you in Mpls, by way of Houston Texas, The man that cuts so deep he gets into your soul, the master of the Telecaster, Albert Collins!Albert Collins!!" With that, you would hear Albert, but not see him. He'd come into the bar playing, wringing vibrato from his Tele. Albert would then launch into any of his trademark tunes. The songs presented here are a showcase of his talent and what he did night after night.
During "Mind to Travel", Albert would get out the 200 foot guitar cord and wander both rooms of the Union, often stopping to sit at your table, talk, have a drink, and all the while wailing in his unique open-tuned and capoed solo style.
"Cold Cuts" features A.C. Reed helping on vocals, and Johnny B. Gayden's awesome bass solo. He played what we called his "Popeye" solo many times to adoring crowds.
This recording takes you back to the nights when the weather was frigid, the beer frosty and the music searing. A nicer more approachable group of musicians you won't find anywhere.
Please buy this and relive Albert's glory days. You won't be sorry.

5 out of 5 stars Riffs Of Wisdom.......2001-01-09

Phenomenal and Riveting. Dr. Collins proves that he is the master of the Telecaster, and shreds all night with a sound that is completly out-of-site. Do yourself a favor and add this little gem to your music collection.

5 out of 5 stars Gotta have this one!...................2000-06-08

This is another favorite live electric blues recording. Albert absolutely makes that guitar sing. This guy should be at the top or near the top of any list of great eletric guitarists past and present. The only complaint is that there isn't more material here. Just 7 songs and about 36 minutes worth. All of it is good though. From the beginning you know your listening to something special.

    ..............socks

5 out of 5 stars Classic early Collins.......1998-06-29

If you like electric guitar blues, this is a must-have.

All the tracks are good, but "Things I Used to Do" is my favorite. He plays the first couple of verses just like the original (Guitar Slim) version, then he really cuts loose in pure Albert Collins style. It's like he's saying, "I know where this comes from, but this is how *I* play it.".

      Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Classical music for a fever dream.......2003-03-26

This reissue of Amber Asylum's 1996 debut is pure mood music, and one mood at that. The musicianship is good and the atmosphere is chilling, but the near-total lack of singing is a weakness until track 7, "Aurora." (Kris Force has a BEAUTIFUL voice, made evident on the albums after this one.)

Distorted guitar and random clarinet trills lash out from a menacing wall of strings and synth. The vibe is delerium, the music you'd hear while asleep with a fever of 104. Melodies are indistinct and haunting, kind of Miranda Sex Garden deconstructed or Rasputina with no sense of humor at all. Assemble a string quartet, lock them in a dim room with the knowledge that they'll die in there unremembered, and this stuff is what they might play.

"Romantic" has some nice Spanish guitar interplay with the violin. The opening "Volcano Suite" settles into haunted-house chords with little melody, like some of Kronos Quartet's more abstract work. Amber Asylum also manages to strip "Ave Maria" down to a disturbing, decayed essence. "Radio Grave" has a Lustmord style, like purgatory Muzak.

"Diablo de la Maquina" features some fuzzed-out vocal samples that actually offer some relief. It's one of the only times on the CD that the band acknowledges the existence of a WORLD or human existence beyond the ambient dread of the soundscapes. Not mystery, but misery. "Western Trance" has a hypno-sonic, novocaine quality much like Steve Roach & vidnaObmana's "Innerzone."

Later albums showcase more structure and a lot more of Kris Force's vocals. "Frozen in Amber" is a must for death-ambient fans. Just don't plan on humming along with much of it.
