As with their last hit, Elephunk, Black Eyed Peas' new disc Monkey Business is a joyful cross-genre journey with musical props to hip-hop, rock, folk, funk, and pop. The reason the Black Eyed Peas have audience appeal that crosses over many styles is because the band members are such obvious fans of diverse music. Nowhere is this more apparent than on Monkey Business's high-profile guest list. After Justin Timberlake's contribution to the massive "Where Is the Love" breakout hit from Elephunk, their inclusion of big names once again was a smart, respectful move on the part of the band as well as their guests. "My Style" is Timberlake's BEP foray number two; while the song is funky pop fun, those looking to hear Justin in the forefront are likely to be disappointed, as his vocals are mixed evenly, no sweet soulful solos this time. Other guests of note are Jack Johnson, who cowrote the bling-bashing "Gone Going," Sting on "Union" (sonically inspired by the former Police-man's "Englishman in New York"), while funk legend James Brown contributes to a scorching soul track dubbed "They Don't Want Music." The contribution of female vocalist Fergie--who joined the band partway through their last CD--has raised up considerably on the band's fourth disc, their second as a quartet. Sassily fronting her way through songs like "My Humps," the "Hey Mama"-esque "Dum Diddly" and the first single "Don't Phunk With My Heart," Fergie's melodic contributions make for a record that will likely be heard by wider audiences than ever, making this a truly accessible `hip-pop' CD. --Denise Sheppard

This is just a fun CD. It makes you want to dance.
We listen to this in the Operating Room and it makes the atmosphere less tense.

I got this a a gift, so at first I was not sure if I wanted to keep it of sell it, as I am not really a BEP fan. In all honesty I know very little about this band, a song or two here and there. I decided to keep it and give it a try, I don't like the popular "hits" that much from this album, but was suprised at some of the really good album tracks. The players are very good on this album. There is a real sense of old school funk here that I really like.
I guess you never know what you will like till you give it a try.

Disappointed.......2007-07-29

As everyone knows (or should know), Chuck Brown is the Godfather of go-go. But unlike "I Need Money" and "Bustin' Loose", this CD seems too slick and overproduced. It's more like a tribute than something with an edge. P.S. Anyone in search of more go-go should check out the Liaison Records catalog.

Wind Me Up, Chuck!.......2007-07-16

Chuck Brown is a Washington, DC institution and our "National Treasure!" This man started "Go-Go!" He is 70+ years old and still manages to stay current with what is happening on the music scene today. For those who don't know what "Go-Go" is, it is a genre of music (a sort of sub-genre of funk music) that originated in Washington, DC. Although there were several bands that contributed to the evolution of Go-Go, Chuck Brown developed most of the characteristics or hallmarks of the style. The song "Bustin' Loose"(1978)...that was Chuck! The song reached #1 on the Billboard Charts in February/March 1979. Several mainstream artists have sampled Go-Go songs or used Go-Go beats (Salt 'N Pepa - "My Mic Sounds Nice", L.L. Cool J - "Rock the Bells", Grace Jones - "Slave to the Rhythm." Go-Go Band EU (Experience Unlimited) received international exposure when they were featured in Spike Lee's movie "School Daze" performing their song [...].

My husband and I were having lunch at Ben's Chili Bowl today and "Chuck Baby" started playing on the jukebox. Everyone in the place was bobbing their heads! People were still singing the song long after it had ended! I left Ben's and went straight to store to buy this CD! As we say in DC, "This joint is CRANKIN'!" This is the serious party/driving CD. It was produced by Carl "Chucky" Thompson who has produced for artists such as Mary J. Blige, Biggie, NAS, Faith Evans, etc. If you are not familiar with Chuck Brown's music, this would be a wonderful introduction for you. The CD, like Chuck's live concerts, will not disappoint. My favorites are "Chuck Baby" (Chuck's daughter KK has a really nice flow on this one), "Theme from 'The Godfather'", and "Block Party." Maryland native and most-able crooner, Raheem DeVaughn makes an appearance on the song "Eye Candy." We (the DC Metro area) pledge our allegiance to Chuck Brown! He rocks!

My husband heard an interview with Chuck Brown on NPR and they also played a song from this album. He really liked it so I ordered it. The first song was a little funny but the following songs just made ya have fun. We ended up just totally liking this CD and type of music.

Just a lot of fun.......2007-07-29

Like one other reviewer, I'm at least 40, and while I know this is really music created by and for the younger generation, I love this CD. It rocks and the bass shakes my car like crazy! And it's refreshing the the lyrics are something I'm not ashamed for my kids to listen to. For me, it's a pleasant change from some of the other me-too music out there today. I think the guitar work is hard-driving, the vocals are innovative and while subtle, some of these songs have good solid Christian messages. I'd have to say my favorite song is "Love U to Death", or maybe "Never Let You Go", but I love the whole CD. If you want to find a band and a CD that will rock you and make you feel good to boot, go buy this one! You won't be sorry!

Family Force 5 -- A Force to be Reckoned with..........2007-06-26

Family Force 5 delivers an onslaught from the first second to the very end. It's a wall of sound from start to finish that is some of the most fun you're likely to ever hear (unless they ever release an equally good sophomore album, etc).

This is the perfect crank-it-up, piss off your neighbors, head-banging kind of music. And it's great to scream along to.

This cd is exactly what I have been looking for. Nice crunchy guitars, upbeat, and clean vocals. I just picked it up today, and I couldn't help but put my window down and turn the stereo up. I'm pushing 40, and this cd made me feel like I was in high school again. Great, great fun disc.

Family Force 5 is one of the best bands out there! their music is super catchy and you'll wanna sing it all day long... I DO! Before I had heard FF5 I didnt really like the loud upbeat music, but these guys were just so good I couldnt help but wanna hear them again and again! so I bought the CD. The "Golden Age" referred to here spans The Jazz Singer and the advent of the talkies to the death throes of the old studio system in the 1960s. So vast was the era's musical landscape that even this 42-track, double-disc anthology can't encompass all its peaks. Not surprisingly, the bulk of this collection originated with the Tiffany's of the screen musical, M-G-M, a body of work whose riches here encompass both pop-cultural bedrock ("Over the Rainbow," "Singin' in the Rain," "There's No Business Like Show Business," etc.) and some less familiar, if equally delightful star turns: Clark Gable gamely "Puttin' On the Ritz"; the sassy, 1948 original of "The Lady Is a Tramp" by Lena Horne; and a loopy duet of "Baby, It's Cold Outside" by Esther Williams and Ricardo Montalban. Fred Astaire's elegant, epochal reign at RKO and M-G-M is represented by "Night and Day," "Let's Face the Music and Dance," and three others, while Metro mainstays Gene Kelly and Judy Garland share equal time and billing. It's not perfect--Cagney's "Yankee Doodle Boy" and/or some Sinatra seem more logical choices than the odd "bonus" duet of Casablanca's "As Time Goes By" and "Lara's Theme" from Dr. Zhivago that close out disc one--but it's a stunning, surprisingly comprehensive primer on the Hollywood film musical nonetheless. --Jerry McCulley

This two CD set amply proves that the musical melodies and lyrics from the golden age of the Hollywood musical remain unsurpassed to this day. This generous two CD set offers 42 incredible songs from Hollywood classic musicals. Most of these fine numbers are indeed from MGM, as Amazon correctly notes; but there are some RKO numbers and even a little from Warner Brothers. Thank goodness, though, that most of these songs came from MGM movies; MGM was the only studio that could boast that it truly had "more stars than there are in the heavens."

I love so many songs on these two CDs. Of course, there's the unforgettable classic "Over The Rainbow" sung by Judy Garland; she also performs "Easter Parade" and "Get Happy" on this two CD set and she carries most of the tune for "I Got Rhythm" even though Mickey Rooney helps her a little. I love "Baby, It's Cold Outside" for its' romantic overtones; and Lena Horne's "The Lady Is A Tramp" is flawless! We also get a rare chance to hear Clark Gable sing in "Puttin' On The Ritz;" and Bing Crosby's "Going Hollywood" may be brief but it's a fun song anyway.

There are two "bonus" tracks on the first CD: "As Time Goes By" from Casablanca and "Lara's Theme" from Doctor Zhivago. "As Time Goes By" is a good choice; it is another unsurpassed classic song that brings back memories and touches even the hardest of hearts. "Lara's Theme," however, is from the mid 1960s and I don't consider this period to be part of the "golden age" of Hollywood musicals.

The liner notes are excellent and they offer wonderful photos of the stars as well. The cover art is well done and the reverse cover art tells which movie each song is from and who is performing each song. Moreover, the quality of the sound is excellent especially when you consider that these numbers were recorded quite a few decades ago.

In short, this superlative two CD highlights the glory of the Hollywood musical when a certain type of sophistication dominated professional movie production. I highly recommend this CD for fans of Hollywood musicals, classic pop vocals and fans of the artists and actors who perform on this two CD set.

What an amazon collection of songs! This is bar none my favorite cd just because of the variety and the quality of songs on it. I love music from this era, and this cd is the perfect companion to my life. Love it! Buy it, you won't regret it for a moment!

Never Sounded Better.......2006-03-16

Apart from the great selection of soundtracks, what really makes this compilation top value is the quality of the sound processing. Executed with finesse, these tracks sound better than when first issued and many are unedited, fuller versions: like "Singing In The Rain", for example. Throw in the great price, and this double disc set is a "must have" for all lovers of classic movie music.

It was once said by the songwriters of that era - "There are two artists you want perform your songs on the big screen, they are Fred Astaire and Judy Garland they sing it just the way we wrote it, for which you will have a guaranteed hit on your hands"...well, this collections certainly has some merit to that statement...because with Judy Garland and Fred Astaire performing seven songs each, there must be something to it.

This collection of musicals still has the magic that we remember from those bygone years...but as long as we have the labels and networks who play and show these wonderful films of yesteryear, they will never be forgotten...hats off to Rhino Records, George Feltenstein (producer) and Doug Schwartz (engineer) and Turner Classic Movies for sharing those 42 selections from 42 films...celebrating decades of the tunes and artists that gave it their all...from what it commonly called "The Hollywood Dream Factory"...The Golden Age of Hollywood Musicals is still among us...gotta love it!

Canadian folksingers Tegan and Sara's debut album debut album on fellow Canuck Neil Young's Vapor Records is a formidable first effort betraying a startling maturity for two 19-year-olds. There is enough depth in the lyrics of "Come On" or "Frozen" to bear repeated listenings, while the mainly acoustic-based instrumentation provides a spare yet rhythmically interesting backdrop for the sisters' musings on life and love. There is also a defiance in some of the lyrics (witness "Proud": "Freedom and blood/ I make my mark and fight for tomorrow"). While there is still evidence of room to grow as each sister betrays a distinct influence (Tracy Chapman for one and Ani DiFranco the other), this decidedly fresh debut is a step toward a very bright future indeed. Apparently they are utterly captivating live as well so expect this duo to stick around for quite some time. --Ike Bolton

I listen to a whole wide variety of music, neglecting the country and rap side of things. This is my first review ever written anywhere, but these girls need to be known. I can't define their music, someone said "folk punk", but it's boundless. Their music isn't held down by genres. Not only are their voices and songs unique and amazing, their stage presence and lyrics are serene. Tegan and Sara without a doubt avoid the sophomore slump(as this is technically their *2nd* album) with these incredibly raw, passionate, original set of songs. I can't stress RAW or PASSIONATE enough...as those are the first words that come to mind whenever I listen to it, even now some 5 years since I first got it. I've purchased everything they've put out since, but this will always be the reigning favorite.

Barely even legal adults at the time of making this album- & yet they evoke such an array of emotions that after listening you can't help but feel your jaw drop a little. I love this CD for all the unique wordplay and intensity with which it's sung. Their voices are so fierce and they've got a lot of interesting things to say.

You'll want to show this to anyone you know who appreciates strong, original, and generally just GREAT music.

Seriously, not a bad track on this cd....each song is so unique in itself, you can't help but listen over and over and love them.

My Favorites: "The First", "Not With You", "Hype", "All You Got"

If teenaged lesbian angst and drive and pure talent were valued more than over-produced glam-schlock this album, and not N'Sync's, would have been the top seller of 2000. Every song is completely listenable because of its energy and sincerity and in spite of its preciousness. It has aged well and is still perfectly relevant. After I saw this act at Lollapalooza in Chicago this year I had to go buy some of their music. I wasn't disappointed, and will go on to buy the remainder of their catalogue. Tegan & Sara are the antidote to the Hillary Duffs and Simpson Sisters of the world. Everyone, take your medicine! Buy this album!

even though this was only tegan and sara's second album, it is absolutely amazing. deep, thoughtful lyrics combine with catchy melodies to make this my favorite album by t&s. i love songs that are a little complicated, that take a little bit of time to really figure out. "this business of art" fits the bill, and so much more...

Megadeth's first album. Dave Mustaine was kicked out from Metallica before they were making their first album. Mustaine was one of the writers in four songs in "Kill 'em All"..."Phantom Lord", "Jump in the Fire", "Metal Militia", and..."The Four Hoursemen"...Mustaine made his own lyrics to "Four Horsemen"...it was called "Mechanix"...it has the same riffs but a little bit different lyrics. Actually, "Four Horsemen" was called "Mechanics" before...it was Dave's song! I like Megadeth more than Metallica but I think Metallica's version of that song was a little bit better than Megadeth's. But there's better songs in KIMB...the first song is fast but sad..."Last Rites/ Loved to Death"...I like the riff so much...it is one of my favourite megadeth songs. "Killing Is My Business...And Business Is Good!"...need I to say that there's excellent lyrics? There's also great metal riffs...it is a killer track! "Skull Beneath the Skin" is also a great track...it comes better all the time you're listening to it. "Rattlehead" and "Chosen Ones" are great heavy metal tracks. "Looking Down the Cross" is at first peaceful then it becomes heavier...and the lyrics are awesome! Megadeth's debut is an original sounded...they had still that innocence (in music) that also Black Sabbath had in their debut...like most of the band has in their first albums. It may sound a little bit raw but that's what makes it special.

Great debut album.......2007-04-26

This is a great debut album for one of the greatest metal bands of all time. I prefer megadeth to metallica. This is probably the fastest album they put out, it starts fast with last rites/loved to deth and doesnt let up until the last track. Great technical musicianship and catchy riffs flood this album. Its a must own album for any megadeth fan, although i would recommend rust in peace first for newbies.

This is it , this is the real deal when it comes to Metal , this album is a timeless classic ! songs like "rattlehead" "chosen ones" & "Mechanix" (far better than metallicas take on this).
Nice that Dave remixed this , he really brought out the guitars & the vocals a lot more & got better seperation on everything .
This was a low budget album , but it's now at it's best , killer playing , killer songs & now killer sound ... turn this up!

The 2nd heaviest MegadetH CD right behind "So Far, So Good... So What?" CD.

Not a bad song on this entire CD anywhere.

Many songs have a very early MetallicA feel to them, well that's b/c Dave wrote the good chunk of very early MetallicA's songs, that he never got credit for. But that's another story for another time.

"These Boots" will not sound the same as it was on the original CD, b/c of the band being threatened by a law-suit from the original songwriter, so the band purposely screwed up the song and bleebed out much of the song to avoid a law-suit and by destroying the song, it was also making a joke and a statement to the original song-writer. (Dave explains all of this in the liner-notes in the CD cover).

No reverb sound on this CD, which is very nice. Although there is a lot of reverb sound on the demo songs, but what do you expect? Those demos are about 25 years old.

You are also going to hear some J.S. Bach Classical Music on here too at the beginning of "Last Rites / Loved to Deth" song. Don't freak out and think this is a Classical Music CD b/c the song starts out with J.S. Bach Classical Music.

"Mechanix" is the same song as "4 Horsemen" from MetallicA, but with completely different lyrics. Exact same music, different lyrics.

"This next song can be interpreted 2 ways: You have our way, and you have their (MetallicA's) way. Personally, I perfer our way the best. The next song is Mechanix." (What Dave said at the beginning of "Mechanix" on "Rude Awakening" 2-CD concert set).

You can't go wrong with this CD. You just can't go wrong with the first 4 MegadetH CDs.

Blue Racer: Bug, Men at Work were a great band who were one of the few great New Wave bands. Japanese Beetle: You are right Serpent Son, if it were not for Men at Work, bands like those losers Duran Duran would not ever have had US success. Blue Racer: This album has loads of classics like Who Can It Be Now, Down Under, Down By the Sea, Be Good Johnny and many others. Japanese Beetle: You are right Serpent Son, these guys were gifted but the original band imploded after a few years. If you trash this then it's HAASAH(karate chop) SAYONARA!

80's cheese.......2006-04-19

The title for Men at Work's debut album says it all: business as usual. More of the same vapid, silly 80s cheese that nobody listens anymore unless you're at some karaoke bar. "Who Can it Be Now" and "Down Under" were somewhat okay when they first came out but they aged very badly. Does anybody wonder why these guys called it quits so early? That's because they explosively stink! Demand for these losers got so low that they had NO CHOICE but to call it quits. Unlike Duran Duran, who stuck it out and continued to perform for over two decades and are NOT a nostaliga band NOR are they "in it for the money." If you like music from Australia, then you have only ONE option: Kylie Minogue.

Still a classic new wave album after all these years!.......2006-04-19

Australian new wave rockers Men at Work's debut album Business as Usual was released in April of 1982 in the US and late in 1981 in the band's native Australia.
The title for Men at Work's debut album says it all: Business as Usual(good straight rock songs with a reggae influence). This album is a classic.
The band(which consisted of Scotland born guitarist, vocalist and songwriter Colin Hay and Australians John Rees(bass), Greg Ham(sax/keyboards), Ron Strykert(guitar) and Jerry Speiser(drums)) got signed to Columbia Records first in Australia because of the song Who Can it Be Now. After the song did well in Australia, America's branch of Columbia/CBS signed the group and released this debut in the spring of 1982. How is this album, read ahead and find out(as I did at age 6 when I kept heisting my sister's record and then subsequently got the cassette now remastered CD).
The opening Who Can it Be Now kicks off the album and was the song that gave Men at Work its first US Top 10 hit and is a great rocker. Next is I Can See It In Your Eyes and is a great rocker with some tasty solos from Strykert. Next is the chart topping Down Under and is a great number and a classic flute solo from Ham and popularized the term vegamite in the US which was unknown outside Australia prior to 1982. Next is the rocker Underground which is a great rocker. The first half ends with Greg Ham's vocal debut Helpless Automaton which is about a robot helplessly in love.
The second half begins with the Strykert penned rocker People Just Love to Play With Words which is a great song. Next is Business As Usual's third and final single Be Good Johnny which is a superb rocker. We slow down a bit with the mid tempo Touching the Untouchables which is a great song. We follow with the reggae-ish sounding rocker Catch a Star which would have not sounded out of place on The Police's first three albums. We end with the classic epic Down By the Sea which is my favorite track on the album.
This album turned out to be a huge success and was #1 on the US album charts for an astounding 15 weeks in late 1982 and early 1983(only to be KO'd by Michael Jackson's Thriller).
I really didn't like new wave(save The Police and The Cars) but Men at Work was one band from childhood I did not ever really outgrow because their songs were catchy and quirky and are still good to listen to.
The album was re-released with remastered sound and FIVE BONUS TRACKS including three live versions and two B-sides.
Recommended!

Here you get all the authentic stuff, including: Paul Robeson singing "Ol' Man River" from the first modern American musical, Show Boat; Ethel Merman singing "You're the Top"; the title song from Oklahoma!; Julie Andrews singing "I Could Have Danced All Night" from My Fair Lady; West Side Story's "America"; Betty Buckley singing "Memory" from Cats; Hairspray's "Good Morning Baltimore"; and "Defying Gravity" from Wicked, the newest show discussed in the PBS series. Some interesting choices, indeed.......2006-03-02

This is a pretty good compilation, but I have to wonder at some of the choices that went into it.
"Good Morning Baltimore" is almost the least impressive song from Hairspray. "You Can't Stop the Beat" was a much more anthemic song from that show.
I agree that it's too bad Les Mis didn't make it in. I would have traded that for anything Sondheim, although that's a personal preference :) .
Still, the opportunity to hear the original performers and orchestras perform these works, all in one place, is a great deal.

Great CD.......2005-11-01

This one plays in the car, on the ipod and in the house. When the kids were little they would ask if we could take them to "The Street". That is what they called Broadway (little did they know at that time how famous that street is). They still love it and we can not get enough of it. This CD covers the best and makes you want to go and see a live performance. You can not beat that.

Great selections, but bad transfers.......2005-07-27

This is a great taste of broadway. If you enjoyed the B'Way series at all, then you will probably enjoy this CD. My problem with it is that some of the songs sound like they were not remastered at all- the transfer to CD is terrible. The orchestrations in "You're the top" by Ethel Merman are muffled, and the song sounds like it was taken straight from an old record and slapped onto the CD without fixing it up. It doesn't sound very clear, which is a bit upsetting and annoying. Maybe this is just because that particular recording is older than some of the songs chosen to be on this CD. The more modern songs sound crisp and new and beautiful. "Swanee" is also very low quality as if it were just taken off of a record and put on the CD without any restoration. I just feel that these songs deserved better treatment and that we as customers deserve better treatment. Decca could have restored these songs and made them sound really good, but they decided just to slap them on the CD without touching them up.

I am surprised that nothing was chosen to be on this recording from Les Miserables since it had been on Broadway for 16 years and its tour is running until 2006. There were selections from Cats, Phantom of the Opera and Wicked, so I am not sure why nothing was chosen from Les Miserables.

Other than these few nit pickings, I think that this is a great introduction to musicals. It gives a little taste across the spectrum. Try getting the cast recordings of the songs that you really like on this collection. It's worth buying if you're a huge broadway fan.

Yes this is Some of the Best of Broadway!.......2005-04-08

This CD from Decca Broadway is a wonderful selection of some of

the "Greatest Hits" of the Broadway stage. Decca and Sony have

done an excellent job of remastering the various recordings, some

of which still show some of their age, but come across quite

well. Are there a lot of songs that I would have put on this

disc? Yes, but the ones on here are good choices. I may have to

get a copy of the Five disc set and the DVD's just to see if any

more of my favorites made it on the list. What this disc seems to

try to do is show the evolution of the Broadway song from it's

early days to the present. It succeeds quite well I think.

If you enjoy Broadway theater this CD is a must!

The music of Broadway comes alive.......2004-10-07

I loved listening to this CD. The music from Broadway's best loved musicals are on this album. I recogized most of these songs, even though I've only seen a few of them on the local stage. I have so many favorites on this CD. It is hard to pick one. I'm a big fan of Barbara Streisand. I loved her performance of People from Funny Girl. Memory is the hit song from the musical Cats. Betty Buckley's performance of this song is so emotional and sincere.

I loved the song Annie. It is a wonderfully optimistic song performed by the original Annie Andrea McArdle. Another highlight for me is the song One performed by the cast of a Chorus Line. Luck Be A Lady Tonight is another of my favorite broadway songs on this CD from Guys and Dolls. The music of the night is a beautiful song by Michael Crawford from Phantom of the Opera. Richard Kiley has such a strong and powerful voice. He sounds so inspirational singing The Impossible Dream from Man from La Mancha. My dream is to see some musicals on Broadway someday and listen to these songs performed live.

I'm surprised that there isn't any music from Miss Saigon or Jesus Christ Superstar included here. I think they are classic musicals with great songs Maybe they will appear on a future compilation from PBS.

Imagine a time in history when artists didn't have to clear any samples in their music. EPMD's 1988 debut, Strictly Business, like the Beastie Boys' Paul's Boutique, was recorded during the clearance-free sample heyday, and we're all a lot better off because of it. Timeless classic........2006-11-07

A lot of classic albums have a difficult time withstanding the test of time. N.W.A.'s "Straight Outta Compton" was revolutionary for its time, but does it really hold weight today? The Sugarhill Gang carried hip-hop into the mainstream, but is "Rapper's Delight" anymore than a novelty track in this century? Even masterpieces from Eric. B & Rakim can seem dated at times, not because of Rakim's vocals, which are smooth as always, but Eric B.'s production even can even be difficult to fully appreciate in today's hip-hop culture. The list goes on, and while these albums are most-definitely classics, they seem obsolete in certain aspects from a fan of modern hip-hop's perspective.

Some albums are timeless, though; Eazy-E's Eazy-Duz-It, Slick Rick's The Adventures of Slick Rick, Ultramagnetic MC's Critical Beatdown, and of course, EPMD's seminal classic, Strictly Business, is just as fresh today as it was two decades ago; perhaps even more so in the stagnant market certain areas of hip-hop today are enduring. Why does this album preserve so well in today's fickle hip-hop society?

Production which is unmatched by even some of the most-advanced producers today, and flows on par with your favorite emcee. Make no doubt about it, this is some of the dopest production you'll find on any album in hip-hop's extensive history, and it still a landmark for sampling in hip-hop music. The flows and rhymes? Far ahead of their time. Parrish has one of the smoothest flows this side of Big L and C.L. Smooth, while Erick Sermon has a thick-tongued New York accent, which is just as gruff as it is infectious. Their rhymes? Few people were kicking knowledge like EPMD back in '88; they set the precedents for emcees like GZA, Mood, and AZ who drop science in a mellow, and serene manner.

From start to finish, this album is tighter than nearly everything you're gonna find on the market; the samples are beautifully chosen, the rapping is elegant, and articulate, and the overall product is an album that even a hardcore hip-hop detractor would have to give props to. Not only a landmark in hip-hop, but a landmark in music; EPMD are true legends in the game.

this is one of those albums I could review in hundreds of thousands of words because I like it that much. but no matter how much I type, you still won't be able to experience this kind of music unless you listen to it for yourself.

"it's my thing" is undoubtedly one of, if not the single best hip-hop songs ever. everyone in hip-hop has taken a piece from that song, from the likes of dr. dre and snoop dogg ("next episode") to the roots and mos def ("double trouble") to tha alkaholiks ("only when I'm drunk", uses the same beat) to jay-z ("aint no n***a", also uses the same beat). the lyrics are hardcore and erick sermon completely destroys the track with his funky samples and lyrical firepower, and pmd is the lead hitter on the track with battle raps that are just as good.

if you ever listen to old school rap stations a lot, you'll notice that epmd, big daddy kane and slick rick get the most rotations. that's because they made some of the best hip-hop of all time. 1988 is easily the best year in hip-hop (only 93-95 can compare), and these guys are living proof.

A Must Listen...........2006-02-08

Simply...Strictly Business is not a joke. This album is sick and the samples are just awesome. EPMD was so different from the rest of the hip-hop community back in the day. Erick and Parrish sampled Eric Clapton's version of Bob Marley's "I Shot the Sheriff" on "Strictly Business", Aretha Franklin's "Rock Steady" on "I'm Housin'", The JB's "(It's not the express) It's the JB's monaurail" for "Let The Funk Flow" and of course, Zapp's "More Bounce to Ounce" and Kool and Gang's "Jungle Boogie for the killer "You Gots to Chill" and the results were brilliant. If you're even remotely interested in the art of sampling go pick this up now! As well as the Beastie Boys "Paul Boutique." These two albums are the pinnacles of sampling before the politics....Classic all the way.

The First Of Three Straight Classics [Part 1 of 3] (5 Stars).......2006-01-06

There isn't a whole lot I can add to the reviews that have been written already. We all know this album is classic material. This album came out when rappers didn't have to clear samples, so cats were sampling like crazy and this album was as well put together as any other album that came out in 1988. Here it is 18 years later and this album is just as dope and fresh now as it was when it was rockin' the clubs and the streets in '88. The album doesn't sound dated as far as beats (the slang is way dated though) and is still heavily sampled even today.

I usually reserve some space in my reviews for flaws, but there are none on this album. This LP is excellent in all areas.

Like I said before, this album is without a doubt classic material. You won't ever hear albums like this being made anymore. The heavy handed sampling is unlike anything you've heard before (with the exception of Paul's Boutique and a handful of others). There are very few landmark albums in hip hop.......this is one of them. If you don't have this in your collection, then your collection is suspect. Go get this A.S.A.P. if you haven't already.

Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.
