Tan Dun straddles the very different worlds of concert music and film scores, winning admirers in both. He's perhaps best known for his score to Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, which shares with Hero a visual poetry that transcends the sword-filled action film genre. In Crouching Tiger, Tan Dun's music was often striking. In Hero he often lapses into repetition and cliché, a failing compensated for by several appealing cues. The Overture, for example, begins with the mournful wail of ancient Chinese instruments set against pounding drums, a promising start that evokes ancient China and the struggles to come. There's a mournful soprano vocalise in "Gone With the Leaves," and the "Warriors" cue recalls Prokofiev's Alexander Nevsky. The plucking of the ancient Chinese lute in "In the Chess Court" evokes a timeless, peaceful mood, contrasting with the thrilling kodo drummers showcased in "Swift Sword." Itzhak Perlman gets cover billing for violin solos any competent studio fiddler could have handled. Tan Dun's admirers will want this, and audiophiles will love those kodo drummers. --Dan Davis

5 out of 5 stars Perfection at its Best.......2007-01-05

I received the Hero CD in mint condition and in a timely fashion. There's a plethora of things one could complain about, and when something works how it should, sometimes it gets overlooked. Not this time! I would just like to commend Amazon.Com on a job well done...

5 out of 5 stars Tranquil Beauty.......2006-08-08

After seeing Hero, one of the (many) things that stuck with me was the evocative soundtrack. It set a perfect backdrop to the artistry and beauty of the story.

After purchasing the soundtrack, I was reminded of many of the scenes I enjoy, especially the tracks for the fight in the chess house ("In the Chess Court"), and in the yellow wood ("Gone with Leaves"). "Longing" is one of the most hauntingly serene pieces of film music I have heard.

This is not, obviously, a CD to listen to while you do step aerobics.
The theme is repeated and varied often, evoking the way the film's story is repeated from different perspectives, but those with short attention spans may perceive it as merely repetitive.

Beyond its association with the film, this soundtrack is an incredibly calming work of art. To be enjoyed with a good cup of hot tea.
5 stars.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful!.......2006-03-19

Interesting way to present some Chinese history by convoluted storytelling. Jet Li provides a subtle, challenging performance. It's a visually stunning movie to look at, as well. In a way, it's a lot like some classic Westerns in that the gorgeously stark landscapes of China become just as much a "star" as the players.

One of the real draws is the music. Tan Dun's compositions are beautiful, sad and celebratory at the same time, and haunting. I think it was pure genius to pair his compositions with Perlman. I had to wait a few months for the DVD, but I went out and bought the music CD immediately after seeing this gem of a movie.

5 out of 5 stars Tranquility, Serenity, Beauty, and Superb Asian Movie Soundtrack.......2006-02-25

When I want to reconnect with my inner self and take a "time out" from my rat race life, I play either this CD or the sound track from "The Last Samurai". The theme from this CD stays in your head all day. If you like soundtracks, asian style muusic, classical music, and beauty, this CD has it all. I sometimes end up watching the movie again later in the week. I collect movie soundtracks and this is in my top ten.

1 out of 5 stars another stinker!.......2006-11-16

this along with louder than hell are manowars worst albums. If you want good manowar by into the glory ride, or any of their 80's albums.

5 out of 5 stars Manowar warriors of the world.......2006-10-18

Heavy, beautiful and diverse, sounds like no one but manowar,a mark of true greatness, ultra fast- mid paced -heavy ballads-great vocals -great musicianship, cant say enough, this has put them over the top in europe home of true metal people,if you fit in that category, buy and enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars A great CD with a lot of variety.......2006-08-05

This was my first experience with Manowar, and I am impressed. Their lyrics are somewhat untraditional with heavy references to Nordic mythology and history. However, most of the tracks have a driving, exciting feel that really pump you up as you listen.

My favorite track on this CD is "Call to Arms". It's a rallying song that would be great either playing games (where I first heard it), or say, starting a sporting event. "Warriors of the World" also has this feel of getting everyone all riled up for something exciting to happen.

However there are also some calmer tracks on the CD, some of which are instrumental. One song, "Nessun Dorma" is done entirely in Italian with an operatic feel, and is a tribute to the mother of one of the band members. Needless to say, it is not metal at all.

If you were unfamiliar with the group, a first listen of this CD would probably make you think that not all these songs were performed by the same band. This CD is a showcase of the many talents of this group, because they can make both awesome and beautiful music at will.

Not only are they talented musicians, but contrary to a lot of metal groups, they can also sing as well as scream.

I would encourage a first time listener to preview "Call to Arms". If you don't feel awesome after hearing it, this CD may not be for you.

4 out of 5 stars Regreso con Gloria........2006-06-30

Just what is meant by "cultural piracy"? The term gets thrown around when Paul Simon makes an album of African-derived music, or David Byrne tries his hand at Latin rhythms. More recently the imperialist charge has been levelled at the practice of appropriating nonwestern traditional music into western club beats, a genre known variously as trance, world dance, ethno-techno, or global ambient, and represented by the globetrotting grab-bag sounds of groups like Trans-Global Underground, Banco de Gaia, and the leaders of the stew school, London's Loop Guru.

In their hands, techno and nonwestern styles are natural bedfellows. Both unfold along a fluid, linear path that put them at odds with western pop's verse-chorus infatuation. And sociologically speaking, the ecstatic release of the dancefloor has tons in common with the spiritual exorcism in mystic folk from Bali, Java, India, Iran, or Morocco--just some of the places represented on Loop Guru's second album, Amrita. In fact, the only impediment to ethno-techno's beautiful marriage is how well producers turn the music's cultural dislocation into postmodern enlightenment. Loop Guru, meticulous studio crafters and enthusiastic live performers, fare well in the middle passage. They do it not as looters, nor as teachers (Amrita's samples and appropriations are never credited), but with the simple (and best) justification--it sounds good. --Roni Sarig

5 out of 5 stars super sounds.......2000-03-06

i haven't heard any of Loop Guru's other stuff but this blew me away. it's an excellent cd if your looking for soothing, exotic and fresh sounds. it was made in 96' but it's very "now". timeless would be a better description. the more i listen to it, the better it gets - i notice something new with each listen. wonderful, beautiful cd, a must buy.

5 out of 5 stars great,great,great!.......1999-07-22

Even though most people who know and like Loop Guru prefer their album Dunjia, I think in the long run and after listening to both albums for years now Amrita offers more versatility. It might be less danceable and instantly accessible than Dunjia and it seems more translucent and fragmented but you never get tired of it because the melodies dont wear out but actually make more and more sense. Phenomenal album. It can happen that you hear a song somewhere and you're like :"wow who's that band? Sounds familiar. I hope I have it." and when you find out its Loop you are actually relieved to know them already and havent let a great band like that slip by.

5 out of 5 stars A brilliant, flawless album........1999-02-24

A lot of electronic/cross-cultural music that I have listened to is catchy and simple enough that it has motivated me to try my hand at it. This album, however, is so good that I realize there is a level I will never achieve. I have owned it for a year now and never get tired of a single track. The best tracks are "Diwana," "Often Again," and "Epic Song."

3 out of 5 stars AmbientGroove & Trancy.......1998-07-17

The album taken together is put together after the name: in a loop format in the vein of higher quality ambient world (sort of). What is the highlight though is track #3 Diwana. Awesome song full of spiritual vigor and essence. Close your eyes and experience the great dragon.

God Did It is an uplifting testimony in song. The lyrics, vocals, and rhythms evoke spiritual renewal with every listen. It is a must have for your gospel music collection. Having initially purchased this in the form of cassette, I sought to purchase it as a CD. The sound quality of three CDs, purchased through different vendors, was poor. I highly recommend God Did It be purchased in the form of cassette.

I must have a lot to say about this song. I became close to a young lady that I really admire listening to this song. We song this song together at our Pastor's Appreciation Services. Man it was off the chain. A lot of souls were saved that night. This have a lot meaning because of the fact of what it say. Everything that happen to me that were good, god really did it, yes he did it. All I can say is, Girl Friend keep up the good work and god will continue to do it.

5 out of 5 stars God Did It!.......2003-10-31

I think Evelyn Turrentine-Agee is a gospel music prodigy, certainly a vehicle from God. The first time I heard God Did It! from her other Cd just sent me into Spirted Praise. her voice stands alone with it's own identity and her music style and songs just keeps you in the spirit. The good thing is that she gives you always more than just ten songs on a Cd and all of them are awesome. her testimony just moves you internally and her wings the Warriors show what real singing really is without makeup effects of studio coverup as so many artist have today. the melodies backed with an organ that just grooves you like a 747 jetliner, and Curtis guitar playing establishes a signature blend. there are so many songs I could talk about on this Testimony album but let take God Cares which immediately soothes you with grace as Evelyn voices touches your senses with a blessing the background voices hold you captive as it stretches the music. in the end you outta breath but left wondering what is coming next and how much more can we handle, Get this CD !!! anyone who listens to gospel music let me assure you this as good as it get, this is a A grade of gospel deliverance, 5 stars all the way and some. I can't wait for her to come to Washington, DC area.

5 out of 5 stars Great Native American Music.......2002-01-08

If your looking for some good powwow music, check this CD out. I love it. It provides a great overview of Native American music, focusing in upon songs designed to honor veterans and warriors. One song on this CD is even a wax cylander recording of a war song from Little Big Horn! However, the most interesting songs on here are those from more recent wars in which Native Americans fought and died; namely WWI, WWII and Desert Storm. The music on here honors the brave soldiers who gave their lives defending there homelands, whethe of Native American descent or not. All too often people forget that Native Americans have contributed to this country, and continue to do so even today. This CD honors those who's contributions have too long been ignored. It is a very beautiful and inspirational CD.

5 out of 5 stars A great comemoration album.......1999-05-30

This is a great album not only for American Indian Veterans but American Veterans as a whole. Those who served and those currently serving in our armed forces are true warriors in every sense of the word.

      4 out of 5 stars Great, But......................2006-03-04

This is a great cd. I mean lets face it they are LOUD! I was listening to it in my car and my windows were rattleing. My only problem is, a little to much instramental stuff and not enough plain metal! But, this cd is worth it. It is worth it for the track:Warriors Of The World, alone.

4 out of 5 stars Surrender thy soul to the cheese!!!!.......2005-11-21

Some call it "Cheese" metal, others "POWER" metal. I call it "Barbarian metal". Kind of combines both ideas. This cd is great for these songs alone:

      1. Call to Arms: 4/5 Great intro song. "To no man shall I kneel and blood is upon my steel". Urge to kill rising, rising. It only gets better with....
      (Skip the next few songs)
      2. Swords in the Wind: 10/5 - The most beautiful and inspirational and totally KICK ASS manowar song ever! Starts as a soft ballad and finishes with power. Makes me wish I had long hair, a beard, iron underwear and a giant axe. Is there a church of Odin around? This and Warriors of the world make the cd worth it. Urge to kill, still rising.

      3. Warriors of the World: 5/5 Powerful riff and very catchy. Goes great following "Swords in the Wind"
      - By this time you're ready to take on the Roman Empire

      4. Hand of Doom: 3/5 Pretty cool song but not the best. Coming down off the high now. By the time you hear it you've already got the manowar idea so it's getting a little tired.

The rest of the cd is pretty lame. Urge to kill, gone.
Who are we fighting again? The non-Barbarian metal bands?

      A fun listen though.

      5 out of 5 stars ummm...SOFT power metal?.......2005-10-10

Excuse me, but you must be OUT OF YOUR MIND, Matt Stoesl. Calling Manowar soft power metal is like saying Iron Maiden invented the New Wave of British Heavy Metal! Manowar is actually certified as the loudest band in the history of music!

Anyhoo, all anger aside, this album was one I came pretty close to buying once after watching the video for the awesome title track (even if it is shortened a bit from the full cut), reading mostly positive reviews on my favorite metal info site, Metal-Rules.com, and hearing some appetizing samples. Overall, Manowar are still a somewhat cocky band, but they still have come a long way from going crazy enough to call THEMSELVES the kings of metal (that would be Iron Maiden!) However, some might argue this statement, saying that if they are the loudest band ever, you might as well consider them metal's true kings because it's got a lot to do with the loud. Well...good point, but I don't buy it. Anyway, I recommend Manowar's 2002 album for its awesome production, sheer power, and strong musicianship..and also, I can safely say that this is by far their better album of two in a decade, the vocals sounded a little off on Louder Than Hell (1996), but all their albums at least deserve a good listen. That IS, if you don't mind how unbearably cheesy these guys can get, the utter volume, or the glass-shattering falsetto wail their singer is capable of.

5 out of 5 stars Damn the rest...this album kicks severe arse!!!.......2005-05-12

I'm so sick and tired of hearing people trash this album. This is, simply put, THE best Manowar album to date. If you think THIS album sucks, listen to all that crap MTV plays! Who would you rather listen to, Manowar or Gay, er Good Charlotte? I rest my case. Now with that said, I will now get into the album. This is actually the first Manowar album I bought. I first heard of Manowar two years ago when I bought the Metal Blade Records 20th Anniversary Box Set, whhich had the song "Manowar" on disc 8, and "Warriors of the World (United)" and "House of Death" on disc 9. They became my favorite band since and I've been looking up their albums on the internet listening to samples to see which one I liked best. I decided to choose this as my first Manowar album. For a while, I've told myself to get it the enxt time I go to best buy or order from Amazon, but I kept on forgetting. Until one day, I finally got my copy of this album. I can't stop listening to this album! At the time I am writing this review, I am even listening to it right now! The band is very talented. Eric Adams is one of metal's (no, NOT just Power Metal) best singers. Joey DeMaio has got to be THE most underrated bassist of all time, right up there with Danny Lilker! He has some of the best bass-lines I've heard! Guitarist Karl Logan also has soem sweet solos here. He is always bashed for "not being as good as Ross 'The Boss' Funicello". Damn what they say, I think Karl can be JUST as good as Ross. And of course we have THE Scott Columbus pounding the skins. Or should I say TINS (pun intended)! He is so wild a drummer he has to use a drum kit with parts of metal instead of wood and skin! This is possibly my favorite album right now. In my collection of over 350 CDs, this is possibly my favorite one of all. The album starts with Call to Arms, it's vintage Manowar! The next song is "The Fight For Freedom", a touching tribute to the victums and those who have been affected by 9/11/01. The lyrics are amazing, seriously how does Joey DeMaio manage to write so much good music since Manowar was formed in 1979? The next song, "Nessun Dorma" is a song sung in Italian that is dedicated to Eric's mother Lillian, who passed away while the album was in progress. My favorite song here is "Warriros of the World (United)", making it my ALL-TIME favorite song! This is my theme song; words can't do it justice, you must hear it to truly appreciate it! "Hand of Doom" is my second favorite song, it's also the heaviest song on the album. "House of Death" is like a HOD pt 2, but it's not as heavy for good, but it still rules. I love all the songs here, but the above mentioned tracks are my favorites. This is a good introduction to Manowar. I reccomend starting a Manowar collection with this album. You might not agree with it being their best album, but you'll might agree with one thing: It's an exeelent album. Warriors of the World showcases Manowar's ability to show their old fans they still got it, and they will never disappoint.

5 out of 5 stars A Tribute To Us Warriors all Around The World. .......2005-04-27

What a mighty record we have here. The Kings of Metal have blessed us again with tunes worthy of gods. Millenia have we waited to hear from them again, but now we have new anthems to be bought into battle and that will surely help us slay the infidels.

Manowar can only stay true to their style. It is the only true form of Metal. As pure as it gets. They have no time for "Whimps and Posers". I expect them never to change their style unless they are affected by an ancient spell. In that case I will gather my warriors and fight against the blasphemous Witch responsible so that they will once again fill our ears with pure melodies.

Call To Arms - 10/10 An Anthem that talks about brave warriors and how we must follow in their footsteps. When the call comes we must gather our steed, armour, and strength and rush into battle. With this hymn we are reminded of the sure victory awaiting us. Those who defend the kingdom and are slain will always be in our hearts.

Fight For Freedom - 8/10 A mighty tune. Reminds us that brave warriors have already fought for our freedom. There have been many great battles and there will be many more still to be fought. We must approach the battlefields with pride and with our women and children in our thoughts and hearts.

Nessun Dorma - 6/10 - Vincero. I will win. At dawn the battle will be over and the enemies will be lying on the reddened fields.

Valhalla - n/a - An ode to our comrades who have fallen in battle and are now being greeted at the Gates of Valhalla.

Swords In The Wind - 10/10 - A mighty song that tells us how to fight. We are all Oden's children and those who fight with honor will be welcomed to valhalla were our brothers are waiting for them. We must have no fear. So when we are falling, we must laugh at our death.

An American Trilogy - 6/10 - Again we must be reminded of past wars, the pain, and the glorious outcomes.

The March - n/a - another interlude that prepares us for the greatest hymn of all time.

Warriors Of The World - 10/10 - The greatest war hymn ever. Calling all true warriors to unite and gather strength for a mighty clash with the enemy.

Hand Of Doom - 8/10 - A fast song that fills our souls with energy that we must unleash upon the infidels. Ours will be their hand of doom. We must tear their flesh limb by limb and feed it to wolves.

House Of Death - 7/10 - Like the previous poem, we are told how to fight and slain the enemy. We must kill and fight.

Fight Until We Die - 9/10 - Another fast tune that sounds like thousands of knights charging into hords of barbarian beasts. We ask the Gods of Thunder Fire and Rain to let us fight to the best of our skills and that they must let us die if our time comes.
