Right on Target .......2007-06-14
I bought this on vinyl the day it was released in my home town. I had played the grooves out of the first Fish album and this one was no different. I recently decided that I wanted to hear this one again after so long a time. I really was surprised at the way that this captures the feel and mood of that era. For a while I was back in time and I really didn't want to return to 2007. A great experience. Forget about being analytical or critical of the level of guitar work or instrumental expertise and realize that it was all about painting pictures and creating a feeling and a mood and sometimes relating a message.
Time travel to the fall of 67..........2007-05-24
...was the title of the review-via-reminiscense I originally started writing, but it inexorably turned into a personal re-living of a particular year when Country Joe (along with Spirit, Jefferson Airplane, Quicksilver, the Dead, HP Lovecraft and a lot of other SF-sound bands) was the theme music for my own off-kilter real-life summer movie about being a Teenage Hippy In Love. That review ended up as something else entirely, its relevance best summed up by saying that this album, along with their first, Electric Music for the Mind and Body, captures, for me, the spirit of psychedelia, the essence of the Summer of Love, the sense, in that Era, that somehow the potential for greater and freer self-invention than had ever been possible before was being unleashed, and that this would change the world.
More fools, we. The Old Hippy's Lament.
Anyway, give this a listen. It may require some parameter-realignment for younger folks, or people steeped in modern music that is seldom as spare or as gloriously unconstrained by musical precedent or expectation as this. If, as some intimate, these albums by CJ and the Fish sometimes show underwhelming instrumental technique and musical sophistication, I say they benefit thereby, as the musical "innocence" displayed seems to have facilitated the creation of music that is wonderfully inventive and somehow, pure. And if, as some others intimate, the music sometimes brazenly displays another kind of creativity, facilitated by powerful psychedelic drugs, I say "So what?" Music is written to accomodate people celebrating the humors of Venus, Mars and Bacchus, why not Morpheus as well?
And that's what this music is. A blissful, mystic, stoned-out pean to possibility, to shared moonlight, kisses at the edge of consciousnees, ecstatic dance at noon and always, always, this newborn thing, Love. I keep coming back to that, about 1967. When you listen to Porpoise Mouth, or Pat's Song, or Janis, you hear love songs for first loves, searingly sincere. Compositions like Grace or Magoo, or Colors for Susan show a willingness to pare the music down to a perfect, no-thing-more-than-necessary, purity and pace, as needed to convey a mood or color or emotion.
As conceded, this music surprised me with how powerfully it summoned up memory of that experience, of that time...so powerfully it must surely overwhelm any modest critical facilities I might otherwise apply to it. So the only recommendation I can honestly make is to observe that for myself, and others, Country Joe and the Fish ARE The Sixties. Which recommendation might get the curious to listen, and maybe hear an echo, bounced off Mars perhaps, of the tremendous, naive, and always-doomed yawp of Love still resonating from those years.
Country Joe Now.......2007-04-04
We need Country Joe now more than ever. This is a good collection of some of the classics that Country Joe and the Fish made in the 1960s, and the title song is as relevant in this wartime period as it was during Vietnam. These songs span a wide range from the sharp satire in the title song to surprisingly tender songs. Although the sound quality could be somewhat better, the quality of the singing and instrumentals is quite good. These are songs that people should be listening to--and singing--now.
Collection Piece.......2007-03-23
I am creating a 60's CD collection and this is one I needed.
Compliments lit course.......2007-01-04
I bought this for the title song, "I-Feel-Like-I'm-Fixin'-to-Die Rag," to use in the Vietnam War Literature class I'm teaching. My high school students loved it immediately.

Moby is back on dance floor turf after the full-body assault of the hardcore Animal Rights. Here he rounds up his existing soundtrack work (for The Saint and Scream, among others), debuts his funky retro take on the James Bond theme (rejected by the producers of Tomorrow Never Dies), and reprises his towering guitar assault on Joy Division's "New Dawn Fades." Fans of his classic Everything Is Wrong disc should check "Go," a house track fueled by a Twin Peaks sound bite. --Jeff Bateman
Customer Reviews:
Moby One Kenobi........2005-04-06
I'd say that for a collection of just SOME of his soundtrack work, this is very good. Ever since I heard "Ah-Ah" on the "Cool World" soundtrack, I've been a fan. "Go" of course is another favorite, as I enjoy the theme from "Twin Peaks" sampled. "New Dawn Fades" is awesome and hypnotic, and also his version of the "James Bond Theme" will take you to 007th heaven. Maybe this isn't the first Moby disc to get, but it's definitely a score.
Beautiful and even more beautiful.......2004-09-09
I boguht this CD USED at Cheapo Discs. I've heard lots of good stuff about his music in the movie Soundtracks industry, and? well, I'm impressed. The James Bond Re-version was impressive and I can't believe that MGM declined his track to not be used in one of the movies...GRRR. 'First Cool Hive' and 'God Moving...' were tracks from 'Everything Is Wrong' although, God Moving Over The Face Of The Waters on 'I Like To Score, Vol. I' was slightly different from the version of it on his other album. I can't stop listening to 'Love Theme' ...One of the most beautiful tracks I've heard from Moby alongside most of the tracks on 'Play: The B Sides'. 'New Dawn Fades' was very impressive considering the fact it was similar to 'All I Need Is To Be Loved' or 'What Love' from Everything Is Wrong...it was just one of those songs where Moby let's loose and rips the track up with some hard rock-sounding guitar breakdowns and beats. Overall, I Like To Score stands out as another one of his SMASH albums alongside Play and Play: The B Sides.
Thanks!
A good listen........2004-07-11
The good thing about this release is that...well, pretty much all of the tracks are good. The bad thing about this release is that the tracks are waterd-down, shortened ones from the originals. Such as the track "God Moving Over the Face of Water", the original is much longer and more heartfelt. I do however like the little extras in the version featured on this release. I recommend it to a Moby fan, but nothing else. I am a Moby fan, therefore I enjoyed this release. But it's not my favorite by Moby. But it still manages to get a 4/5 from me.
I like this score.......2004-03-21
Many Moby's fans often treat this album as his weakest effort collecting rare, unreleased and re-recorded tracks used in movies.actually thees songs are not that bad as some say.
Of course it is not a Regular album but it is not lacking any chronology and it is very good as you listen to it from begining to the end.
1."Novio" - Typical slow moby track with ambient piano and some gregorian choirs.very poetic and relaxing. 5/5
2."james bond theme" - energetic, agressive and dancable theme with kiler guitar.horns are outstanding.i really like that track,it is really dynamic and fun 5/5
3."go" - Moby's classic, his first hit.Contains theme from David Lynch's Twin Peaks theme.dark, full of electronic beats, amazing.this version is refreshed a bit but still very fine. 5/5
4."Ah-ah" - very psychedelic acid-techno song.wierd but good, this songs was on his debut album, here it is remixed and it sounds more agressive 4/5
5."I like to score" - quite short song driven by funky guitar.it is only interlude for me,nice but nothing special 3/5
6."oil 1" - this was on "the saint" movie, fast dance track, musically it is moby at his best techno years but the woman moaning here can make it sound boring after some time. if not the woman's voice i wuold give it five stars. 3/5
7."new dawn faces" - amazing Joy division cover,Moby songs here and whole songs has havy guitar arrange.different than the rest of album but i just love that songs in both versions.Hard rocking track. 5/5
8."god moving over..." - great ambeint piece, one of the best from "everything is wrong" album, here is in shorter edited mix,100 times weaker than long album cut. you must hear it in 8 minutes version to feel it. 3/5
9."first cool hive" - relaxing track from "everything is wrong" - here in longer version.driven by great vocals and interesting bass riff.one of my favourites 5/5
10."Nash" - short spanish styled piece. 3/5
11."love theme" - guitar sounds like Mike Oldfield himself recorded it.the songs sounds sadly quite standard and too sweet, but hey,it's love theme. 3/5
12."grace" - sit down and relax to this 5 minutes minimalistic piece of music.simmilar to some "play" tracks. 4/5
In conclusion it is a must-have for any moby fan. I got this album after "play","18" and "everything is wrong" and i like really this cd,it reminds of more earlier moby style represented by his mid-nineties records. Do not expect a masterpiece,it is a collection, but tracks like "go","new dawn fades","novio" or "james bond theme" are making it a really good buy
I like to score.......2003-11-08
I don't know why "I Like to Score" gets a lot of heat from other reviewers. I always thought "I Like to Score" (and still do) was a solid Moby album. Yes "Play" was my first Moby cd that I bought but at the time when I bought "Play" (in '99), I lived with a guy who was a big Moby fan and he owned "I Like to Score" and would play it quite a bit. I thought Moby's cover of the James Bond theme was/is tight. That song should have been used for the last James Bond movie, not Madonna's watered electro-clash "Die Another Day". "I Like to Score" kicks off with the hauntingly beautiful "Novio" which can also be found on "Everything is Wrong" (an essential Moby album to own). In fact quite a few songs off "I Like to Score" can be found on "Everything is Wrong" like "God Moving Over the Face of the Waters" and "First Cool Hive" but they also can be found on various soundtracks hence the purpose of this collection, Moby's music from soundtracks. "I Like to Score" may not be the sonic masterpiece that "Play" is but it is not the POS that some people make it out to be. It is a good solid album. People to need to listen to it with open ears and open minds, and not expect "Play pt.2".

Tribute albums are always suspect; classical interpretations of rock even more so--and follow-ups to the same are fraught with mediocrity. Just witness the inexplicable glut of String Quartet Tribute discs to Tool, Bruce Springsteen, and many other top-selling and cult artists. On Hold Me to This, his second run at the music of art-rock group Radiohead, classical pianist Christopher O'Riley avoids all these pitfalls. These aren't easy-listening piano renditions of Radiohead tunes, but deeply inspired, often challenging and dissonant re-imaginings. O'Riley succeeds by taking the music on its own terms. He doesn't try to make it "classical" but lets the classical nature of the music ring out. From the storming chordal overtone clusters of "There There" to the Chopinesque refrain of "The Spinning Plates," O'Riley makes you forget these songs were originally played by a raging rock band. Instead, they seem born on the keys of his piano. His "Paranoid Android" is like Conlon Nancarrow going boogie-woogie one moment and painfully, sweetly rhapsodic the next. I'm not sure how Radiohead fans will respond to this, but piano and classical listeners should rejoice. --John Diliberto
Customer Reviews:
this has the depth you need..........2007-02-17
I don't believe you need to be ga-ga over Radiohead to enjoy this CD. This CD, it's all piano (w/o vocals) if you didn't already know that going in, will provide an even deeper appreciation of the textures & depth of the Radiohead catalog. Mr. O'Riley does takes some artistic liberties with the songs, albeit minor, but in so doing he unleashes the potential they all have. And this potential is truly staggering---some selections are nothing short of gorgeous.
Hold me to this: you WILL be floored by this CD. it's well worth the purchase.
Oddly Boring.......2006-07-16
I adore Radiohead, and really enjoy solo piano. I should love this disc, but I don't. Even though the wonderful creepiness of Radiohead is completely absent, I would be willing to chalk that up to artistic interpretation. But that's not what bugs me about this disc. What really bugs me is his style of playing. He relies on resonance and the transcript is completely devoid of silence. The result is a droning wall of notes, and all the pieces sound the same. It reminds me of Windham Hill recordings, but without the expression. Get Yorke's new album, Eraser, if you need a Radiohead fix, or get George Winston if you want solo Piano. I really wish I could recommend this, but I just can't.
a bit disappointing.......2006-07-11
O'Riley takes some liberties here, and that's fine. I'm a bit disappointed by his dynamic range, which is a bit predictable from song to song, and also with his tendency to overload the songs with schizophrenic ramblings. The craziness works well at times -- see "There There" for a time when it works well -- and other times it is overwhelming (see: "Nice Dream").
Despite a sometimes overloaded sound, the song list is so attractive and O'riley hits so many high notes (if you will..) that the CD is well worth owning. I prefer the "True Love Waits" album.
Cocktail Party Radiohead.......2006-03-21
I own the first Christopher O'Reily Radiohead Tribute - True Love Waits. If you love his stunning piano in that, or if you love stunning piano altogether, you will love Hold Me To This. I am an avid lover of all things Radiohead turned into wordless music lullabyes and this one does not dissapoint.
Good effort.......2006-03-02
Sound all the same...listen to the samples before you buy it. If your a fan of radiohead you wont like it...if your a fan of the piano you wont like it. But I give my respect to the musician for making the effort to replicate already beutiful music.

Literally coming out of nowhere, FFH and their major-label debut, I Want to Be Like You, took the contemporary Christian music industry by storm during the first half of 1999. CCM radio jumped all over "One of These Days," as well as the title track, indicating the immense accessibility of this foursome. Similar to Duncan Sheik's light-rock stylings, there's a free and easy feel on this release that won't confine the limited vocal range of lead singer/songwriter Jeromy Deibler. Plus, he's ably supported in that area by bandmates Jennifer Deibler, Brian Smith, and Steve Croyle. Longtime FFH fans will recognize the novelty of "Big Fish," an independent hit for the band several years back. The album takes on a stronger praise-and-worship vein in the latter half, buoyed by "Wholly to You" and the concluding "Power in His Blood." Overnight success? Sure, but seven years of touring and singing is one long night. This band has made itself ready with I Want to Be Like You. --Michael Lyttle
Customer Reviews:
Good Faith Group.......2006-06-30
This is a good CD by FFH. I have their other CDs. I like the inspirational hits one the best, though.
Great debut!.......2006-05-22
FFH's debut is a pure winner. Their lead off single "One of These Days" is not only the best song on this album but also the best song they've released to date. While I honestly wish the rest of the songs had the edge and more of the tempo that 'One of These Days' has, the album is good in it's own right and is a winner.
Awesome CD.......2005-10-01
This is a really upbeat cd. Very inspirational. Makes you want to keep on worshipping!!!!
One these days I'm going to see my savior who took the cross for me.......2005-09-05
I love this cd. It has great praise and worship music. I Want to Be Like You has both great lyrics and rhythm. I love all of the songs on I Want to Be Like You. FFH has such a soulful and folkies voices. I play this during daycare hours. My daycare toddlers love the music too. My favorite songs are One of These Days, I Want To Be Like You and Big Fish.
FFH - I Want to Be Like You.......2002-12-02
This track is not only awesome but very uplifting. With songs like " I'm Alright " and " One of these Days " your sure to be inspired to take a whole new view on life or atleast your day. From slow calm songs to Up beat songs , This album is for any time and should surely make your day!

Disney.......2004-11-30
This cd is really good, i love all the songs. Ariel has always been my favourite disney classic. I only have one problem, the singers arn't the actual singers that were in the films, and thats abit of a dissapointment for me. I would recommend this cd but not to people who actually want to listen to the actual people.
Wonderful Orchestrals.......2002-02-11
What's best about Disney's animated features, is that they contain amazing orchestral scores and songs. With this CD, one can hear the nuances of the full orchestral scores of 4 of Disney's most popular features, as played and by a full symphony and chorus.

Awesome.......2006-04-04
I loved the music on this cd. Thank you so much. My brother and I listen to it all the time.
Disney Always Rocks.......2005-09-29
Yeah looks like it's a great get, if you haven't already got every CD by disney. Didn't know the song You'll be In my Hear was a Tarzan track. Must be a spin off to You'll be in My Heart. Its all good.
Awesome collection!.......2003-10-19
I have to say, that with a 5 year old who is obsessed with the movies that these songs go with, it has made the perfect gift! She spends hours listening to this CD while doing more productive activities than sitting in front of a TV watching the movie. The songs are special to her because of the movies, and she actually does her schoolwork well with these fun songs playing. As a music lover and a Disney lover, we both agree at 5 and 30 that this is a hit.
For adult listeners, the Disney songs sung by "real" singers.......2003-07-22
Trivia Challenge: Included in the 16 tracks on "Disney's Superstar Hits" is the only song from a Disney film to hit #1 on the Billboard Pop Charts. See if you can remember which one it is before I give the answer away at the end. No peaking ahead.
The songs collected on "Disney's Superstar Hits" are mostly from the 1990s; there is "Once Upon a Time in New York City" from way back in 1988 from "Oliver and Company" and a few songs from the 21st century. But the only golden oldie is "Put It Together (Bibbidi Bobbidi Boo)," which comes from "Cinderella II" and not the original. The obvious frame of reference would be to see this collection as representing the Disney Renaissance ushered in by the Alan Menken/Howrad Ashman era, which makes it strange that nothing from "Little Mermaid" is included. But the common denominator to this collection is that the songs are not sung by the characters from these films, or, more properly, the people who did the voices for the characters. So instead of Angela Landsbury doing "Beauty and the Beast" it is Celine Dion and Peabo Bryson.
There are several songs from the less than stellar direct to video Disney sequels, such as "The Hunchback of Notre Dame II," "The Lion King II: Return to Pride Rock," "and "Cinderella II," which would be a minor complaint. But Tina Turner sings one of the songs, so it is hard to complain. In fact, the strength of this collection is indeed the superstar singers. Most of them are blasts from the past such as Elton John, Stevie Wonder, Phil Collins, Sting, Huey Lewis, and Randy Newsman, but there is also new blood such as Christina Aguilera, Sarah McLachlan, Vanessa Williams, and even Jennifer Love Hewitt. Peabo Bryson comes out ahead, with the aforementioned "Beauty and the Beast" and another duet, "A Whole New World" with Regina Belle.
This disc is perfect for grown ups, who like the "real" singers singing the best songs from the Disney movies their kids have been dragging them to for the past decade. Vanessa William's "Colors of the Wind" is my personal favorite, although it is hard not to recall the fantastic opening of "The Lion King" when you hear Elton John do "Circle of Life." On the fun side of the ledger I like Randy Newman and Lyle Lovett working their collective ways through "You've Got a Friend in Me" a bit more than Jimmy Cliff and Lebo M's "Hakuna Matata."
Trivia Answer: "A Whole New World" was #1 on the Billboard Pop Chart for one week starting on March 6, 1993. It is the song that replaced Whitney Houston's cover of Dolly Parton's "I Will Always Love You" after 14 weeks on top.
Good CD.......2002-12-29
This is a great CD, but I was kind of disappointed that there weren't more tracks on it. Other than that, you and your kids will be singing along in the car for sure.

Open minded.......2007-07-30
If you are you will truly come out of this with a new appreciation for this very deserving and talented artist. He does have so much soul in his singing. On any track on "How I Seem To Be" he drops the skills like its 2nd nature. I love "Open Mind" and "Just Flow" which is the song i saw on the Logo network the video and loved it. I love the cd as a whole myself. But those tracks in particular really do it for me. So if you have a chance to get this cd don't sleep or wait til later to support a truly talented artist. Its a ride you will really enjoy taking a part of, enjoy.
Not Bad!.......2007-07-29
I fell in love with Your Mine (alone is worth the purchase) and also heard Flow with my Soul. With those 2 in mind, I decided to buy it. The album keeps pretty much the same vibe and pace throughout which is a good thing (because he has a "sound") but the "sound" got pretty old in my opinion. Positives: VERY good voice, lot o' soul, good lyrics, good solid first (I beleive) album. Negatives: Not much variety. Overall a good buy!
leave it to logo.......2006-08-16
leave it to the logo network to get this dude some well deserved attention. he deserves a close look... "flow" is off the hook... deep in soul blended well with a soft rap beat that hits the spot. great mood music. trust me.
INCREDIBLE!.......2004-02-03
To look at his boyishly white face, you couldn't imagine the sounds that come from inside. Seeing a cute face, I decided to listen to his CD at a listening station at a music store and the sounds that came through the headphones made me think that perhaps I wasn't listening to what I thought I should be hearing. There is so much soul trapped in that little body...thank God he has an outlet from which to release it, otherwise he would explode! All songs are amazing and he is definitely worth a listen...you will not be disappointed!
This boy is good!!!.......2004-01-12
I have just listened to the CD. Adam's voice is so smooth and beautiful. I love the songs. How could people sleep on this indie artist. He's gonna be huge. Such a mature sound for such a young artist. It's like a soul revolution that i've never heard before. I LOVE IT!! check this boy out!

Absolutely Amazing!!! ('specially for white folk).......2004-03-27
This is an absolute must!!! I have never heard such passionate singing of spirituals from non-black choirs. Perhaps that is attributed to Shaw's minister roots. As usual, the sonority of Shaw's singers is second to none. This is a fun CD that all can enjoy...not just the choral buffs who know just how good Shaw and his choirs are!!!
Not Up to Shaw's Usual Standard.......2002-03-23
Maybe just personal taste. I don't find the arrangements and vocalizing as interesting and satisfying as "Sea Chanties" and "23 Glee Club Favorites", the latter setting a standard never equaled.
A Must CD for Choral Music Lovers.......2001-01-03
Amazing Grace is a very appropriate title for this recording. For those of you who love Sacred Harp , Southern Harmony and Spirituals, you will revel in the folk traditions of this album. Parker and Shaw arrangements, and sometimes just one or the other are so well done. The singers, of course, do an excellent job of making music under Shaw's direction. "Hark I Hear.." arr. by Parker is becoming a standard for choruses and this album will help you hear why. "If I've got my ticket" by Shaw is a wonderful exchange between solo and chorus. You will be playing this CD over and over once you hear it.
Soul-stirring.......2000-08-10
I have thoroughly enjoyed this CD. The thoughtful and meditative, "What wondrous love is this, O my soul, O my soul" sends the listener awe-struck to the foot of the cross. The triumphant "Ride on King Jesus!" reminds the listener of final victory. I highly recommend this CD to anyone who appreciates musical and cultural heritage or for anyone who appreciates religious music.
