Union Underground's debut album is a bit of a mixed bag. Though they come from the industrial end of heavy metal, they're at their best when they incorporate the back-to-basics Southern grind of Monster Magnet and White Zombie on excellent tracks such as "Turn Me on 'Mr. Deadman'" and "South Texas Deathride." The amped-up spirit of grunge-rockers Alice in Chains loom large over "Killing the Fly" and "Revolution Man." Unfortunately, "Until You Crack" is fairly predictable, while "Trip" boasts ridiculous lyrics ("I'm a junkie / God is gay"). --Robert Burrow

One of my favorite albums over time.......2007-07-06
I first bought this album sometime in middle school, [...] I believe. I was in the midst of a big Powerman 5000, Monster Magnet, etc., kick, and they had come up through some recommendation. I bought it then, which was around 8 years ago, and lost it sometime in college. I recently repurchased it, and it was as excellent as I remember. It's one of the only albums I can sit down at any point in time, and listen to. It's also great music to just turn on and let play while doing other stuff. The first two tracks took a little while to get into, but tracks like Revolution Man and Bitter have always been favorites of mine. It's really unfortunate despite the rumors, that they never put out another album, as I think they would have only grown better. As is, for a first and only album, it's fantastic, and a great listen any time.
great listen over the years.......2006-12-02
even though there was unfortunately no follow up to this album, i must say even after five years of owning it, it never got old. the songs are short and sweet enough that the cd invites you to listen to it in its entirety. in this day and age, i only buy cd's from artists i really respect and i would buy this album time and time again if i had to.
A Promising Band That Never Filled It's Potential.......2006-07-21
The Union Underground have not been heard of as much since their appearance on Ozzfest 2001. Even though on Ozzfest they proclaimed to release a new cd and played one of the tracks on the "soon to be released" CD, that was never actually released. This CD was definitely good but apparently the band didn't really pursue to follow up too much, which could be due to many various reasons. It has been too long for them to expect their name to do much for them as the time in which they came out is long since gone. My personal opinion is that it is a mix of southern rock(Pantera) with a nu metal(Slipknot) edge and then a bit of an industrial(Nine Inch Nails) feel to it. It is definitely worth a listen, or even worth buying, but don't expect any strong follow up. . . ever.
One Of The Overall CDs I Own.......2006-04-15
Every once and awhile i find a CD that is great. This is one of them. I really started listening to UU at the end of 2005. I bought the cd at a local music store because it was really hard to find in other bigname stores. I was introduced to UU when i was watching Monday Night Raw, A wrestling program. I heard the song and immediatly downloaded it from iTunes. Then like other band if i liek a song ill buy their cds. This is one of those CDS that is purly excellent. You know.... the cds when u fall in love with EVERY DAM SONG ON IT!
I only know of a few other cds in my eye that has only good songs.
Nevermind-Nirvana
Americana-Offspring
Every Six Seconds-Saliva
Sinner and Desensitized-Drowning Pool
My Favorite songs on this cd are "Revolution Man" (download the video off iTunes it rocks)"Trip With Jesus", my favorite song on the CD, and "South Texas Deathride".(i reconmend get "Ozzfest 2001 2nd Millenium" and "Live...One Nation Underground" to hear great live versions of the song.
Incredible Sound!.......2006-03-24
This is one of the best "old" albums I've bought in quite some time. It's been a strange year for me, as far as my tastes in music. I've been continually frustrated with the selection in music stores, and I am growing EXCEPTIONALLY upset with the radio cuts of what they consider "good" rock. Therefore, I've been scanning Amazon's collection and looking for ANYTHING that MIGHT be good between 1989 - 1997.
I got REALLY lucky when I ran across this band.
I can compare them to so many other bands, but they only seem to adopt certain qualities from each, so in a sense, they're a hybrid of originality. Take the frontman's voice. It reminds me at most times of Layne Staley (RIP), but at other times, it borders a Manson-esque/Rob Zombie feel. The guitars are tight, and while the riffs aren't necessarily all original, the twist of electronica gives each song a totally new appeal. The percussion section isn't anything that struck me as amazing, but this is good; it somehow meshes well within the song. (Most industrial-flavored bands-at least to me-have drums that stand out a little bit too much, making it easier to identify flaws or awkward musicianship).
What makes this album stand out is the INTENSITY each member puts into each song. I know I could be cyber-hanged for saying this, but I think they are BETTER than PM5K (whom I love, by the way). There seems to be a lot more vocal flexibility...the frontman ranges between creepy, growly whispers to throaty, infectious screams, to edgy anti-pop vocals (probably bad wording...think of Rob Zombie when he's carrying tunes instead of screaming or whispering). That's the best analogy I can think of at the moment.
As far as I'm concerned, there's not a bad song on the album, but there ARE standouts. Obviously, the ferocity displayed in "South Texas Death Ride" and "Turn Me On, Mr. Deadman" are immediate moshpit starters. "Killing the Fly" slows down the pace just a little, until the prechorus storms in with the anthemic: "I wanna break you!...". And personally, I don't care what the Amazon.com editor says. "Trip with Jesus" is THE best song on the album. Listen to it ONCE...LOUDLY. I guarantee you, you will find more climaxes in this song than any industrial band out there today...and this includes most Nine Inch Nails tracks.
Angry, bitter, fast-paced, and so much fun. I wish they had more albums out...I would definitely buy them.
Even if you still believe this review is questionable (and I guarantee, if you like Rob Zombie or PM5K, you'll love this stuff), it's really cheap, so what have you got to lose? Seriously...pick this UP!!!

Review.......2007-01-16
Anthems Of Rebellion is indeed a great album with crushing guitars, excellent rhythms, a great yet unique vocalist, and astounding solos and riffs off of some of the songs off the album. The solo off of the song Silent Wars is so amazing, it's the sole solo that launchs you into the album and helps make the album sound so good. We Will Rise also does the same job beautifully and brutally, exactly how melodic death metal should be. Even more there's a lot of unique moments off the album like the technoish styled guitars off of the song Instinct, the opera like ending off the song Exist To Exit, an accoustic interlude called Marching On A Dead End Road which is an INSTANT highlight, the strange Anthem interlude, and Angela's unique vocals off of Dehumanization which is the only song is Arch Enemy's catalogue that you can hear these mysterious vocals. The lyrics off of the album are very cool also. For me Dehumanization, End Of The Line, and Instinct are the lyrical highlights off the album. "Welcome to the circus, leave your brain outside, sit back, relax, as we feed you lies" - End Of The Line
<
Favorites: Silent Wars, We Will Rise, Leader Of The Rats (amazing rhythms off this song), Marching On A Dead End Road, Dehumanization, and Saints And Sinners
Least Favorites: Instinct, End Of The Line, and Dead Eyes See No Future (being my least favorite one). Don't be fooled though as ALL of the songs are amazing to my ears.
Recommended for a melodic metal fan.
lacking..........2006-11-22
when you listen to an arch enemy record, you exspect melody and complexity. this lacks both. it has a few good moments but it could have been way better. i did really like the clean vox. its some of their best, thrown in with some of their worst. i think they corrected this problem with doomsday machine, which was really good. if you are just starting to listen to arch enemy, buy wages of sin or stigmata. this one is for diehards only.
Arch Enemy delivers........2006-10-06
Usually when a singer is replaced, it's bad news, except in the case of AC/DC, Iron Maiden (when they switched to Dickinson, not that other loser), and Arch Enemy. So if you have any reservations about a female vocalist in a metal band, you can relax.
In fact, what we have here is a top-notch metal album with clever producing (Andy Sneap is friggin' brilliant), great musicianship, and very memorable songs. One song after another is, as far as I'm concerned, a classic. Among your Lamb of God, Avenged Sevenfold, In Flames, Killswitch Engage, Trivium drek Arch Enemy really sets themselves apart.
ANGELA RULES.......2006-06-02
I love Arch Enemy so much. Melodic Death Metal is so much better than the "normal" death metal! CRUSH 'EM!!!
I've Grown To Like This Much More + An Apology.......2006-05-18
Since I'm not allowed to change my star ratings while editing a review, I'd like to say to say that depending on the day, this is a 4 or 5 star album. Since I reviewed this CD last May of June (I can't remember) I've grown to appreciate Arch Enemy's new material much more. In fact, I'll go as far as to say I like it more than the original Arch Enemy (frontman: Johan Liima). I'll say it again, Arch Enemy has been blessed with some of the greatest musicians on the planet (not just for metal). I recently heard that Michael's brother Christopher has left the band and is teaching music lesson's for the time being. Great bass playing and very good percussion. I went to go and see Arch Enemy in concert and they're amazing. One of the best shows I've ever seen. Angela Gossow really knows how to put on a show and captivate an audience. I don't like this particular album as much as Wages of Sin or Doomsday Machine but it is packed with solid tracks. Very good.
I recently read a comment posted by a Mr.Ty Arthur who "confronted" me about some of the sexist comments in my previous review of this CD. If anyone was offended by them, I apologize. I would like to thank Mr. Arthur for calling me on my absolute stupidity. I couldn't have more respect for Angela Gossow. She is a true innovator.
Lastly I'd like to say buy any of Arch Enemy's albums, personally this isn't my favorite but it is very good none-the-less.
Strong Songs: We Will Rise, Dead Eyes See No Future (good EP as well), Instinct, Dehumanization (cool intro, good song), Saints & Sinners
Not So Strong: Personally I didn't like Silent Wars that much, plus of the 13 songs, 4 are under 2:15...just a thought

Like Metallica, this So-Cal hardcore quartet has matured smartly into a rock juggernaut without betraying its initial fire and anger. The Peter (Queensryche) Collins production shines on "Accept My Sacrifice" and "Monopoly on Sorrow." --Jeff Bateman

My intro. to Suicidal Tendencies.......2005-05-13
As my title says, this was the first Suicidal Tendencies album I got. I expected it to sound punky, as everyone says they're so good a punk band. I was surprised, and NOT the bad kind! This album is straight forward metal. The first two albums had a punk influence, but HCILTWICEST and everything afterwards was a metal album. This is one of the best albums of the 90's. Mike Muir's vocals are top-notch here. Rob Trujillo's bass is great, the guitars from Mike Clark and the other guitarist (forgot his name...sorry!) are great, as are the drums. The album starts out with "Cant' Stop". NO, not the Red Hot Chilli Peppers song! It's one of the longer songs, but it's a great start to this great album. The next songs, "Accept My Sacrifice" and "Nobody Hears", are my favorite songs on this album. I like all the songs on this album, but the above three are my favorites. Recommended if you like metal, speed metal, and Suicidal Tendencies.

PS, new Suicidal Tendencies album later this year!
It contains one of the most mesmerizing songs ever!!!.......2005-03-09
I am 36 and have been listening to hard rock/metal since I was only nine. I own more than 1,500 hard rock/metal CDs. I am not bragging here, but rather trying to put things into perspective when talking about this album.
This whole album is incredible. It's easily ST's best, but you got to let it grow on you for a while. This CD contains ST's best song ever, and one of my top ten songs of all time: "Asleep at the Wheel". I probably have listened to that song more than 1,000,000 times since this CD came out, and I still close my eyes and sing it out loud EVERY SINGLE TIME!!! It's a very original song, impossible to describe with words. It's magical, it's mesmerizing (By the way, you may skip the first two minutes of the song since they are very forgettable and have actually a different name - "I Wasn't Meant to Feel This").
Another great song is "Monopoly of Sorrow", especially after the 3:37 mark. This has to be one of the best song endings that I have ever herad. That combination of fast pace acoustic and electric guitars is simply top notch.
Anyway, get this CD and let it grow on you. You will not regret it.
Hard rock can be art.......2005-02-25
When I bought this album I didnt get what I thought I was getting into. For awhile I was highly dissappointed listening to it, and to be honest I didnt like it to much. I gave 'The Art of Rebellion' some time though, and it grew on me. The lyrics can be a bit corny and annoying some of the time though, and that brings it down a half point - from a perfect five to a 4.5. Thats still really great, and perfect albums that truly warrent five stars are really far in between for me though. For anyone who wants an album they can listen to years for now (unlike those whiny emo bands who will be gone after the fad wears off), then pick up this album. You cant stop the run away emotions in me, you know... Never mind. Buy the album and you will know what I'm talking about.
I agree--best ST album and last good one.......2005-01-19
I love this disk,I am a huge fan and like all there stuff up to this cd.after that it went pretty down hill.
every song grabs you from start to end.
a lot of people did not think it was hard enough, but it is and it has some real musical substance.i say buy it you wont be sorry. I would give more stars if I could.
A good comeback after "Lights".......2004-04-07
This album is more like "Lights" than "How Will I Laugh" in it's song writing style but done way better. The tunes are good, not dry like "Lights" and the album feels well-produced. You'll find the songs high in content and quality but not that fast or thrashy. This is NOTHING like early S.T.'s but it is a good album nonetheless. I regard this as Suicidal's last good album. Trust me, after this, it's completely downhill in the worst way.

Perfect.......2002-05-24
I give 'em 10 stars. One bad part is if it's play on the radio and they say their name at the end...You kinda assume they're Powerman 5000. I mean they do sound very close to them.
Awesome.......2000-07-21

Wonderful.......2007-02-17
The Ceremony of Opposites part of the album is very good. Where it shines though is on Rebellion. Oh, I love Rebellion. I think the best songs Samael ever made are Static Journey and Rebellion. Ceremony of Opposites is the first merging of keyboards to death metal by Samael. Rebellion continues that trend. I very highly recommend this album for any fans of death metal.
Misanthropic black metal.......2006-11-04
If you know black metal, you know that it is not just a 'sound' but more like a concept. Samael's Ceremony of Opposites does not fit the traditional 2nd wave sound, even though they reached their peak during this time. Instead Samael has taken black metal to a whole new level, somehow making the music clear and frightfully aggressive while retaining critical elements of melody and musicianship.
The album's best song is definitely 'Black Trip' and lets you know what Samael is all about. The first half-second swells into a blistering attack of intense double kick and a crushing guitar riff, which eventually moves into a highly fluid and syncopated verse riff. After a short three minutes of pure aggression, the song ends with the ominous 'I await the coming of my death'. This is easily one of my favorite songs, and could be perhaps the most intense album opener in extreme metal. The only album-openers that compare are 'In Shadows And Dust' and 'The Ambassador Of Pain', both by Kataklysm.
I hope I have convinced you of the magnitude of this album. Unlike other black metal albums that one would be inclined to listen to privately and contemplatively, you will want to crank up this album and release all your energy to it.
AMAZING MASTERPIECE .......2005-09-17
This is one every Black/Death/Doom/ fan must hear to know just what an amazing job has been done on this cd. Here are 10 tracks of extraordinary, dark and meaningful yet not for one second sounding pretentious. It is almost excruciating to listen to Vorph's cries of anger. This is not a band that is trying to just sound good, these guys puth forth a believable hate for christianity, and not by writing music that concentrates on demons, but rather being realistic in every way possible. When I get goosebumps while listening to music, I know I've stumbled unto something amazing. Just buy this cd, you won't regret it for a second, actually you'll be glad you did. And this release also has the mandatory follow up EP Rebellion. What a package.
The thing I really like about Vorph's vocal use is it has appeal and real emotions behind it, not like Deicide(I used to really enjoy listening to Deicide when I was younger, but it does nothing for me now, especially since I refuse to waste my time with such repetitive emotionless crap lacking everything a hard album should offer, except speed, but making the songs fast is not all there is to making an album hard).
There are no real stand out tracks here, which is good because it retains its wholeness to stand much higher than many other albums, even by Samael. I woke up this morning with the lyrics of Son Of Earth, that is how powerful this album and band are. In my review of the Samael album 'Eternal', I said "Ceremony Of Opposites was always my favourite but this album(Eternal) has grown on me much more". I'm not really sure I can stand by those words, as there will never be another album as soul piercing as Ceremony Of Opposites. This may not have the epic sound like Eternal does, but it has something that eternal lacks entirely, and that it a pure hard, rough like a thousand sandstones under your bare feet. The way Vorph spews forth the lyrics on this album, and the words he has chosen are so bold and effective. The last track on Ceremony Of Opposites(which is the title track)makes my skin crawl. But don't listen to that song before hearing the others, as it only has that effect after listening to the entire album. This album must be listened to in its entirety to be fully appreciated. Adding Rebellion onto the same disc is rather a catch 22 in my opinion. Being a really nice addition to Ceremony Of Opposites on hand, but after listening to the Ceremony Of Opposites album in its entirety I like a little bit of silence to get my breath back. It really is a breath taking experience.
Excellent artwork for an album well deserving of it. The cover is so matching to the music, its almost part of it. I couldn't imagine any other artwork being used on Ceremony. This is art at its finest, both musically and graphically.
"We're a part of everything as everything is a part of us" is the cryptic response issued by Vorph, Samael's guitarist and vocalist, when questioned about whether or not he associates Samael with the notorious trappings of black metal.
Hymns of blasphemy and attrition.......2005-04-10
Nothing in any musical genre captures the spirit of pure, envenomed agression like Samael's earlier releases. Burzum and Beherit are the only bands that even come close. Needless to say, this release isn't for the casual melodic black CoF, Dimmu fan. Yet those who aren't afraid of a bit of noise and blasphemy will find Ceremony Of Opposites to be a masterpiece of the highest degree.
F*@king g00d.......2003-10-25
nothing like the usual black metal out there. if you're a dark throne fan, then don't bother. This is not "pure" black metal (as some people put it), but none the less its different, and deffinetly worth a listen to. very catchy riffs, kinda have a digital thing about them, but not too electronic...just very precice i spose.
If 'anthems to the welkin at dusk' - emperor, appealed to you then its for you, also if your into dimmu borgir, this is just what you want.
Also...listen to opeth people!!!!!!! for those of you who haven't yet listened to them...please do! your missing out...STILL LIFE!!!!!!!!!!

Excellent book , excellent album!.......2006-11-26
First off, if you are a fan of the band Iced Earth, I should point out the vocalist sounds (to me anyway) at times alot like Matt Barlow from IE. Altogether, this is a very tight power metal epic, but a little on the thrash side. I feared before my inital listen that it wouldn't live up to Shakespeare's literary masterpiece and would dreadedly fall short, but much to my suprise it is an extremely well written / well executed Heavy Metal take on the book. It is 73 minutes in length and I must warn you, if you are not into alot of narration on your albums this might annoy you as about 15 minutes of the album are narrated passages that intertwine with the songs. This is essential to helping the story flow along and get told in the confines of CD time restraints. But, even with the lengthy narrations they are well done vocally unlike some bands (most notably Rhapsody, whom I thought suffered from the horrible narrator they employed until they got Christopher Lee to do them). I will say that if you love the story of Macbeth and love the heavy metal originating from Germany (or if you just miss Matt from Iced Earth, this vocalist is the closest I've found) you really shouldn't be disappointed in purchasing this album. Better book to music translation than most I've heard and a very strong Heavy Metal album in general. I think any true metal fan should own this great album. \m/
Very Ambitious.......2005-02-21
A bought this CD a couple of weeks ago and listened to it in its entirety today. The music itself is pretty straight forward metal, nothing overly epic. The spoken passages tie everything together nicely, however the attempts at Scottish accents (from Germans) was a bit distracting. Overall, I enjoyed this CD quite a lot. I was prepared for a Thy Majestie-type epic adventure but was pleasantly surprised by the slightly raw feel, not of the production, of the music itself. Definitely worth a listen.
Macbeth redone in Metal !!!!!.......2003-01-28
This is a great cd. Give credit to Rebellion for taking one of the greatest literature pieces of all time and putting it to music let alone METAL. This cd hits hard and fast and doesn't let you go until the end and then you go back for more. If you're a fan of Rock Operas then do yourself a favor and pick this one up you will not be disappointed.

one of the best "indie metal bands".......2006-04-14
I first saw irate during a jagermusic concert, they were the opening act for Saliva. I was really impressed with the live show that they put on. If your into "nu-metal" then i would suggest this album. the style runs from system of a down, to slipknot and everything in between. Also they have a new album coming out in the following weeks, intitled "Brothers of the Same Struggle"
a random pick up but not too bad.......2005-03-02
i kept seeing the same cd from IRATE for months in the used cd section at a local store and it kept getting marked down.finally when it got low enough, i was so intrigued that i had to buy it and it looked like a cd that i would like.not too bad at all.they infuse a little bit of everything.some sludgy metal, some rap, some weird guitar effects too whcih keeps things interesting.think reveille, relative ash,and drowning pool.a cd destined for the used cd section but if you see it cheap and im sure you will, grab it and try something new.

Flattering for QR, but PAINFUL to listen to!.......2000-12-29
It's flattering that QR is so well loved that tributes are warranted. However, anyone who has heard some bar-band or other "butcher" a 'ryche song knows how painful it is to hear a poor imitation of the real thing. There are just some things that one does not mess with...this band is one of them. It was brave of the bands to attempt the challenging musical material that is trademark QR, but they would do better to concentrate on original material. Sorry!
A rare album and a rare tribute.......2000-09-21
Listening to this album is definitely an experiece worth trying (even for the hard-core QR fans out there). It also served as a great way to expose some lesser know bands who have some great potential. I was very impressed with "Take Hold of the Flame." No, none of the songs are exactly the same as QR's original songs, but perhaps we should all remember the term "poetic license." Nice job to all the bands involved.
I think that it is great, but it's not Geoff.......2000-09-03
I think that it is good someone is finally giving Queensryche the credit they deserve, BUT none of these songs even come close to the power of Geoff's voice. I seen Queensryche in concert, back in 95', it was the best experience in my life. Geoff Tate's vocals were awesome! If you are a true Queensryche fan you will either love it for the songs, words, etc, or you will hate it, like me, because it's not them!
