Boosters of Skid Row singer Sebastian Bach may not find this 1998 CD to be a truly objective best-of Skid Row. The 16-song disc, compiled by bassist Rachel Bolan after Bach's departure from the band, leans toward Bolan-penned hits, leaving out a couple of the band's best in the Bach tunes "Wasted Time" and "In a Darkened Room." For a casual fan, though, the expected trademark anthems, including "Youth Gone Wild," "18 and Life," and the bass-heavy "Piece of Me," are there, as are the beautifully produced power ballad "I Remember You" and requisite rockers "Monkey Business" and "Slave to the Grind." A demo, remixes, and a live track included here may be interesting to the faithful, though they also highlight the biases that color the song selections. The previously unreleased 1988 rocker "Forever," however, is a rarity worth having. --Katherine Turman

3 out of 5 stars Half of an awesome record.......2007-04-11

Sebastian Bach took no part in this project stating he didn't feel the band who put out three studio LP's and a couple of EP's could be encapsulated on a single disc. I bet he didn't say no to any royalty cheques though. For all his great singing Bach is wrong - with 16 tracks on show it shoud of been easy to put together a platter which would of blown up stereos worldwide. The band has the back catalogue to do it that's for sure.

But the release of what purports to be the hard rock cum metallers most killer cuts is effectively hobbled by the track listing. The first ten tracks rip righteously. Youth Gone Wild, Monkey Business, Slave to the Grind etc are all present and accounted for. But criminally none of the towering tryptich of disturbing ballads of the Slave to the Grind album are here - no Wasted Time, In A Darkened Room or Quicksand Jesus. It's not like these were obscure tracks - they were singles with videos done for them - you'd expect a bands singles to be on their 'best of' wouldn't you?!?

The other major problem found herein is the seven odds 'n' sods tracks. There are uneventful/rubbish remix or demo versions of songs plus a live take of Been Yourself Blind from the Subhuman Race album. Now it's pretty good, by why not put stuff like that onto the Jap EP Subhuman Beings on tour EP and make a full live album? Of course we get a couple of unreleased toons - a demo from the Slave to the Grind sessions pluse a number from '88 - Forever. The point is nothing here adds anything to the story of Skid Row and takes up the room that should of been given to their actual great tracks.

This album scores three stars for the first 9 tracks (OK - the unreleased Forever is pretty cool in a numbskull teenyrocker way) but what frustrates me is how awesom this collection could of been if it was a genuine best of. Which this band so thoroughly deserve. Now 16 tracks of their best numbers - THAT collection would score five stars with no dramas at all.

4 out of 5 stars I was really expecting something better .......2006-07-26

Before I start I would like to say if there was a 3.5 rating this cd would get it from me. But anyway this is just an alright cd and I think there could have been heavier songs. There are a few that I think rocked like 'The Threat', and 'Slave To The Grind'. I only own their first cd before this one and all I know is that it totally rocked and comparing those 2 cds their self titled cd kicks this one across the floor. But I would recommend you purchasing this cd only for the very few good songs on this, but instead I would recommend downloading the songs because you can own it for half of the store price.

5 out of 5 stars It can't get better than this.......2006-03-22

Excellent compilation of the greatest hits from this rock band.

3 out of 5 stars Boring Album.......2006-01-04

Ever since i heard "Remember Yesterday" i fell in love with the sound of skid row. Too bad when i bought this compilation i found out that it sucks and the band basically does to. if more songs would have had that high pitch, ass kicking rythm like "Remember Yesterday" than it would be worth buying. This band is no Def Leppard or Tesla, so leave this one alone...The cd just kind of drags out the whole time with some terrible vocals..forget it.

3 out of 5 stars Not quite enough for me...........2005-09-29

How can anyone not include these great songs:
"Wasted Time"; "Here I am"; "In a Darkened Room"; Firesign.
Skid Row fans must admit this is an incomplete compilation.

3 out of 5 stars THE BEST OF-CUOLD BE BETTER.......2005-07-11

Where are: Wasted time, Hollidays on the sun? These songs are great and the best performance of Skid Row as musical metal force and these songs are not here (because they weren't hits or best of?)

The 2 non-previously released tracks are very cool, but the mixes(?) and demos do not add any value.

It seems this Best of was done on the rush to keep Skid Row on the air for 1998 but nothing new.

I hope the record company start releasing the Skid Row's Cd's with 20-bits technology and adding the songs not still available (also if merging some albums could be great, what about Skid row album + Hollidays on the sun + B-ourselves +Forever demo at 20-bits sound?

What about Slave to the grind + Fire on the hole + Beggar's day at 20-bits sound?

What about subhuman race + some great live songs at 20-bits sound at a reasonable price?

The best time for release them when SR toured end of this year with new album on the road.

3 out of 5 stars Skid Row's greatest hits..........2003-08-24

Skid Row is one of the coolest rock bands to emerge from the late eighties. Unfortunately, when the rock industry underwent a vast change in the early nineties, the band was forgotten by many. Until now. At long last the band has a hits compilation! How does it measure up? Read on and see.

PROS:
If you're a casual fan of Skid Row and you just want to get their two biggest hits, Eighteen And Life and Youth Gone Wild, you'll get both of them on here. Plus, for all those die-hard fans of the band, there are unreleased tracks! These include demos, live tracks, and remixes. There's something for everyone here.

CONS:
This compilation makes the same mistake Twisted Sister's hits compilation made - going overboard with unreleasd tracks. Seven of the sixteen tracks present here are bonuses! It seems like the compiler couldn't decide whether he wanted to make this a hits compilation or a rarities one. Taken separately, these are both excellent things. Taken together, they create an extremely mixed bag.

OVERALL:
Get this if you're a die-hard Skid Row fan who can't live without the rare tracks. If you're a casual fan, just get the band's self-titled 1989 debut album. It's got both of the band's big hits, and it costs less, too.
