Granddaddy of the Hollywood studios, Paramount Pictures is rightfully proud of its century of contributions to both American cinema and the art of film scoring. But the first disc of this 43-track double-CD anthology merely hints at the studio's musical peaks, blithely skipping through its first seven decades in just 17 tracks. Indeed, the package as a whole seems more interested in marketing its post-'70s catalog of hits and blockbusters than it does in paying real homage to history and roots. Even rarities like Double Indemnity and The Lost Weekend are served up via modern budget-line rerecordings, as is Ennio Morricone's epochal Once upon a Time in the West). Contemporary recordings of Aaron Copland's rare score to The Heiress and Franz Waxman's great Sunset Blvd. fare better, but soundtrack fans may miss the originals. The studio's rich pop-crossover successes in the '60s are documented via Breakfast at Tiffany's "Moon River" and excerpts from Romeo and Juliet and Love Story, while successful franchises like Star Trek and Raiders also get their due. Too often the '90s-focused second disc only underscores some uncomfortable trends in contemporary scoring--orchestral nervous tics punctuated by booming crescendos, treacly piano Muzak--and makes one wonder if the music of The Rugrats Movie and Lara Croft: Tomb Raider are really film music milestones. --Jerry McCulley

Great Movies have Great Soundtracks!.......2007-05-10
If you love movies and movie music, you can't go wrong with this two cd Paramount Anniversary set.
Only Disc 1 Is Worth Anything.......2006-07-19
Normally I have a lot to say in my reviews, but not this time. The main problem with this collection is that all the most memorable film scores are just on one disc, with the second used mostly to play out stuff from the last ten years that, really, musically isn't very memorable and only includes three pieces anyone will recognize just because, like the movies they come from, they're based on old TV shows - The Addams Family, Star Trek, and Mission: Impossible.
And that brings up another problem. With all due respect to the late Jerry Goldsmith, who has provided some truly great classic movie scores, was it REALLY necessary to include TWO versions of the SAME Star Trek march in this collection? This seems evocative of the milk-it-for-all-its-worth attitude Paramount has had lately toward its now-tarnished crown-jewel franchise. Where's James Horner's theme music from Star Trek II and III? If they're gonna put Star Trek on here twice, they should have provided a little diversity. It wouldn't have taken much, I'm sure.
I'm sure that Paramount's had other films with far more memorable music (even Harold Faltermeyer's Top Gun Anthem could have helped on Disc 2). This just seems like a lazy attempt at something that really could have been great.
More of a propaganda CD.......2002-10-30
There are some really great songs on this 2 CD set. However, those really great songs seem to be lightly interspersed amongst a large number of forgettable songs whose main purpose seems to be to remind you of those movies you enjoy(ed) so much.
It seems a little odd to me that out of 90 years of film making the most memorable scores have been largely released within the last few years. I was pleased to find themes from the Godfather, Indiana Jones and Witness. I was perplexed with the inclusion of songs from Rugrats, both Mission Impossible movies (one would have been more than enough) and Tomb Raider (memorable???).
This is my own personal bias, but I do prefer movie soundtracks that evoke a feeling of excitement. With this collection I just couldn't get excited. I kept finding myself being let down by songs that didn't in some way complement the preceeding song.
There are certainly some great tracks here, but overall I was disappointed. My advise would be to look elsewhere.
Great selection of Film Hits!.......2002-09-25
This one was a pleasant surprise! I thought- how could any CD that had "Baby Elephant Walk" be all that good? This one is. Lots of great scores- classics and a few hidden treasures. After hearing the beautiful title score for "Children of a Lesser God", I had to buy the entire soundtrack - very soothing. There are a few that may seem too overplayed ("Love Story", "Raiders of the Lost Ark",), but most are a welcome addition to any compilation. Try NOT loving "Building the Barn" from "Witness" or the "Hymn to the Fallen" from "Saving Private Ryan". Hours of great listening.
Older recordings, main themes only.......2002-08-27
This is a great album concept, but I really wish Paramount had re-recorded these scores as they deserve to be heard. The tracks range from 1944 to the present, and the older recordings sound just like the cleaned-up older recordings that they are.
I would also personally have enjoyed more "secondary" music themes (otherwise it becomes like reading book summaries that always only quote the opening paragraph), and I could easily have done without the "pop" tunes (like Baby Elephant Walk and the Rugrats theme). In fact, it would have been very nice to listen to an album comprised of tracks chosen for their strong musical value rather than apparently for their box office and/or hit song popularity. But, to be fair, that may be precisely what draws some people to this CD set.
Film score music constitutes the single most significant body of classical music of our time. I hope some of these tracks will entice listeners to buy entire soundtracks and listen to some of these works as a whole.

maurice jarre: the emotion and the strength.......2005-01-29
I am sure that anyone reading this review will agree with me on the fact that m. Jarre's status as a composer is beyond legend. What a pure genius. HOWEVER, I simply have to write this review to warn his fans what a huge disappointment this album is. Frist, the quality of the recording is tinny and insipid [I am not some picky audiophile, but live albums usually leave a lot to be desired]. Most important is that the arrangements and their performance by this orchestra is just totally unsatisfying. Lets face it, what we all love about Jarre is the power of his music in relationship to the films for which it was done. We want the evocative quality of the real scores, pretty much as they were for the films. You wont find it in this album[close your eyes and think of your favorite film score. You can hear it in your mind easily. now imagine hearing an album where the arrangement of it that you hear bears little relationship to what you lovingly remember. Thats the reason for my profound dissatisfaction]... So just buy the 'real' soundtracks and enjoy!
"Ageless Composer..Legendary Icon Extraordinaire..Jarre".......2002-01-21
Highly skilled composer one of the "Old Guard" film scoring Giants...belongs to a very exclusive club of longivity...creating some of the most brilliant scores ever to grace filmland...Mauice Jarre can write music for any story-line...from any country in the world...one who fits the bill of legendary icon in his most worthy profession...FILM COMPOSER EXTRAORDINAIRE!
Not being one so taken with LIVE RECORDINGS, but this 2-CD-Set has much merit, quality and enjoyment, all music composed and yes, conducted by MAURICE JARRE, with very capable musical organizations~ BBC Concert Orchestra,Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin, how's that for a Grand Slam line up...but let's see what musical scores make the grade of "stand outs" and the ever popular "highlights".
Starting with the stand outs ~ "A PASSAGE TO INDIA"(1984), string section opens with counterpoints from percussion, giving you a sense of traveling through India, brass takes over with a main theme, gives the ten minute Suite body---"FATAL ATTRACTION" (1987), solo piano sends chills through your memories of the story line, almost textures of "Classical Jazz", blending eerie strings with muted brass joining in for substance, reminds me of some of 1940's murder mysteries with Bogart or Mitchum---"RYAN'S DAUGHTER"(1970), haunting theme with melodic overtones, give way to the percussion section, moving within the unforgettable melody always stumping the music fans, where have I heard this before?
What you've all been waiting for...the HIGHLIGHTS ~ "LAWRENCE OF ARABIA"(1962), exceptional score for this stunning film, won an Oscar for "Best Original Score 1962", percussion and brass draws you into the desert, living each passage from an unforgettable arrangement that sits high on the composers list on his achievements---but the one everyone remembers for orchestration, originality and lasting impression of "Classic Soundtracks" is "DR, ZHIVAGO"(1965), sweeping Russian melodies with poignant blends of the windwood sections, listen as the counterpoints abound reeking with passion as the love of two women for one man, the Main Theme is probably one of the most recognizable in the world.
Milan Records has given us an additonal score "SUNSHINE"(1999), a beautiful haunting score that has Jarre's signature in place, the chorus gives off a heavenly sound of "Pure Harmony", counter balanced by the orchestration, gotta love it!

"Hello Dan".......2006-01-16
Yes, like the 1st review says, this would have been perfect if it included Madame Butterfly. Other than that, extremely scary music. It's like, you would be listening to this real soft but kind of eerie stuff and then...Pow! The music just goes to this shrill synthy sound, just like the movie. Excellent Soundtrack!
Great Soundtrack.......2003-08-13
This was a great soundtrack to the 1987 blockbuster thriller "Fatal Attraction". If only they would have included the opera music from Madama Butterfly, it would have been perfect. It contains the piano version of the Madama Butterfly Fatal Attraction, but not the vocal opera singing heard during the dinner scene. The music is intense and scary. It literally takes you on a heartpounding journey into Michael Douglas's terrifying situation with the borderline psycho woman played by Glenn Close. Contains the music from every scene, including the violent kitchen scene where she cuts herself and tries to stab Douglas with the butcher knife, the boiling pot scene, the rollercoaster scene, the brutal bathroom scene where she terrorizes and tortures Douglas's wife, and many more... Great for Halloween/scary music.
Surprising........2001-09-26
This CD is only half an hour long, but worth it. Jarre does a frighteningly convincing job of transferring Glenn Close's pursuit of Michael Douglas into sounds. I recommend it to all males who might be experiencing similar, but hopefully less intense, situations in their lives. Now you have background music for the conflicting emotions inside of you.
The minuses of this CD are definitely outweighed by the pluses, but it is worth mentioning that even though six tracks are listed on the label, this CD actually has fourteen tracks, eight of which are unlisted. I'm guessing that this soundtrack was still available on LP and cassette tape long before CD, as the label still lists a Side A and Side B. Therefore, watching the movie first and then playing the disc while the sound is fresh in your head is highly recommended.

Wide scope of Jarre's musical work for films.......1999-03-19
This significance of this album is the earlier music. The music written for the famous French film director, G. Franju. The characteristic Jarre sound had already crystallized at this stage. The later selections on this recording are a testament to various musical idioms which Jarre can write for while maintaining his own unique style.

Adam Bomb Get Animal 2 now available. Customer Reviews:
An Unknown Gem.......2004-11-03
I heard I Want My Heavy Metal on the radio show Metal Shop and decided to check out this cassette (it was 1985, ok). Adam used to play in a band called TKO. He went off on his own and recruited Aerosmith stand-in Jimmy Crespo and Riot drummer Sandy Slavin. Fatal Attraction has rockin guitars and great catchy songs. My favorite tracks are IWMHM, Take Me In, It's A Bust, Shape Of The World, and Russian Roulette. The cd re-issue includes the two videos from the album but they are both cheesey. Still, it's a great album w/out one dud. The song listing above is for some other album, NOT Fatal Attraction.
1985 COMES ALIVE (but were you paying attention?).......2003-03-31
Yes, you were there in 1985... and you THOUGHT you were enjoying MOTLEY & KISS as they started wearing sequins (okay, ASYLUM wasn't as bad as THEATER OF PAIN), and you THOUGHT RATT's follow up to OUT OF THE CELLAR would be a little better... MUCH better actually, and you also THOUGHT you didn't miss a thing 'cause HEAD BANGERS ball never missed a beat, right?
Well, guess again kids. Long before AXL put the PETITE in apPETITE, GEFFEN records unleashed the equally classic FATAL ATTRACTION (2 years earlier!) by ADAM BOMB (a.k.a. just one of the guitarists KISS audtioned and shoulda kept before they settled on VINNIE VINCENT in 1982!?!?).
But where were you? No matter! Here's your chance to see how BOMB out-snot's the best of 'em as if he's Johnny Rotten in a blender with AEROSMITH (circa ROCKS) on the mighty opener "SST" (and yes, that's JIMMY CRESPO on lead guitar here!). BOMB even out-dudes BOWIE with his version of "ALL THE YOUNG DUDES" (much better than ANGEL's attempt in 1980, at least!)... not to mention the organically "cooler-than-you" power-pop cockyness of "SHAPE OF THE WORLD" as well as the depth of the mood swing street ballad entitled "You'll Never Know".
Great, great, cool stuff!
How this album didn't cut through the fey redundancy of "heavy metal" as it existed in 1985 is beyond me (perhpas the enclosed "I Want My Heavy Metal" single actually sold this album short.. the entire work is much cooler than that title implies!)
In any case, you've got two cool bonus tracks, and two very 1985-ish videos added on here for good measure... one is hilariously dated (in a fun naive way) and the other is still fairly cool now. You decide which is which... as long as you BUY THIS LOST CLASSIC NOW... it's never too late to discover what you shouldn't have missed!

Tough Guy Metal.......2006-04-12
Take one look at the band photo on this disc's booklet and you know exactly what kind of metal you're gonna get. These denim-clad, pig ugly (seriously - they make Grim Reaper look like pretty boys) metalheads from Belgium obviously love their Motorhead albums. They deliver hard, fast, no-frills metal. You're not going to find any ballads or keyboards here, just straight up fist-pumping heavy metal.
It's nothing you haven't heard before, particularly if you own at least one Motorhead album, but Fatal Attraction is still a fun album. Besides, sometimes you just need to hear loud, mindless rock music blaring from your speakers.
The Mausoleum Anniversary reissue of Fatal Attraction features 4 bonus tracks taken from guitarist "Shorty" Van Camp's solo material.
