Johnny Frigo swings with a seeming effortlessness second only arguably to Count Basie.

Time to acknowledge the man's talent........2002-03-02

As stated in a review by IAJRC (International Association of Jazz Record Collectors): "Remember that album by Grappelli and Menuhin? Grappelli got the Jazz, Menuhin got the sound. In Johnny Frigo's case, he got both."

He's the second oldest living Jazz violinist in this country and the world, and that's a fact. However, that's nothing compared to the fact he has two things that should put him on the top of his field: great sound and Swing. These made John unique and it's been too long for him not to be considered as a national treasure of this country.

Being a personal friend of John made me decide not to give any rate at all, for it might be considered as a biased rating. But I have to say that if you call yourself a Jazz fan, especially Jazz violin than you should get this album. You won't be sorry at all for spending some 15 bucks for this disc. By the way, I know there's five stars attached to this comment. The thing is Amazon won't allow me to leave the rate field blank. I got to put something so I thought 5 would do. But keep in your mind that there's nothing personal here, just a matter of technicality.

Whatever you say about alternative country, don't call it "underground"--not since the "movement" has now received K-Tel's (mixed) blessing. Hard-core fans will find Exposed Roots redundant, but for those curious about alt country, this compilation is not a bad buffet to sample. The two-disc set is most interesting for the particular vision it presents of the wanna-be genre, though many of the choices seem questionable. The inclusion of lesser-known acts like the Handsome Family and Lambchop is adventurous--and rewarding--but does anyone really think Marlee MacLeod is more important to the development of the scene than Uncle Tupelo? There's nothing here from Tupelo, or any of their St. Louis kin. And the token nods to Gram Parsons ("In My Hour of Darkness") and Johnny Cash (does anyone need another recording of "Folsom Prison Blues"?) should've been omitted, because their inclusion only makes the absence of other forerunners painfully obvious. But most offensive is "See Right Through" from Tangletown--a band that nobody knows, included presumably because their 1999 debut album is also distributed by K-Tel. Buy the compilation if only for the liner notes by No Depression editors Peter Blackstock and Grant Alden, who provide a serviceable map to the dozens of albums by the bands heard here. --Anders Smith-Lindall

Guitar Town.......2007-03-26

Ah the genre compilation. One of the thornier concepts in popular music. It's hard enough to provide an accurate sampling of a single artist's "greatest hits." Now multiply that difficulty level by 5,000 or so (or some other arbitrary large number of your choosing) and you have the task that confronts the poor compiler faced with the onerous task of summarizing a genre on two CDs. I'm surprised anyone even tries. Add to that the reality that "alt-country" isn't even a proper genre. It's really just a random agglomeration of unrelated artists spanning across multiple decades who share a somewhat similar sound. So you have to give K-tel props for trying here.

HOWEVER, if you claim your product to be a "best-of," it has to be evaluated as such and what we have here falls short. First, as others have pointed out, a best-of this "genre" (note the quotations around the word "genre") must absolutely include something by Jay Farrar, Jeff Tweedy, or preferably both together. The closest thing we have here is a fantastic Golden Smog track (probably the best song on either CD) that does not even feature Tweedy except maybe playing bass. C'mon K-tel, you can do better than that (unless the copyrights to said catalog are unobtainable, in which case POINT THAT OUT SOMEWHERE if you can't get your lawyers on it pronto!). There are other artists missing too but none quite compare to the omission I am pointing out here. That alone should be enough to rest my case.

Second, what we have on these discs doesn't even really represent the best of the artists included! I could substitute better songs in a number of cases, such as "Crooked Frame" by Alejandro Escovedo or "Take Me Down" by Kelly Willis, both of which happen to appear on Rykodisc's brilliant 20th Anniversary compilation. Maybe Ryko rather than K-tel should be responsible for this compilation.

Nonetheless, I don't want to downplay the enjoyability of this compilation, which has been getting a number of spins over in Wolfland (aka my humble home). I particularly enjoy having some of the more obvious picks in one place (Steve Earle's "Guitar Town" for example, or Johnny Cash's "Folsom Prison Blues"), and hearing some of the more daring inclusions from the likes of Vic Chesnutt and Lambchop. The first disc caused me to go out and buy Tangletown's only CD, which is a fun listen. Plus, any compilation that features the Honeydogs is a friend of mine.

So on the whole, 3 stars means a fun listen but it cannot accurately be labelled the "best of" anything. It's just another fun compilation from a record label which at the time mistakenly thought it had a genre or scene on its hands.

Great compilation to get into whatever they call this music.......2004-05-14

Bought this not long after it came out. I was just getting into alt-country, americana, no depression, insurgent country, or whatever you want to call it. This is an excellent starting point. Standout tracks are The Handsome Family's suicide song "Weightless Again", Whiskeytown's cover of the Black Flag classic "Nervous Breakdown", Johnny Cash, Freakwater, Gram Parsons, Steve Earle and the list goes on. If you are curious about this style of music, get this. If you can't find something on here you like - then alt. country (country-rock?) isn't for you.

A little bit of everything........2003-08-14

This collection of 24 cuts by different artists gives the listener an idea of how varied and interesting the roots of alt. country are. (Is it just me or is alt. country a truly dumb name. Just checking.)Songs from many artists; vets like Johnny Cash,(The true father of this style of music and so much more)and Steve Earle ("Guitar Town")to "newer" bands like BRS-49 (With their wonderful tribute to Bettie Page, a pin-up queen of the 50's)are mixed together with no real concept behind it. (Typical K-Tel) But as another reviewer explained it, this is not for fans of the genre, it's for new entrants, like me, who want to check out what this sound is about. I've definitely heard a few things here that make me want to pursue some of these artists'other recordings. A nice sampler and while maybe there are omissions, for an overview this one is not bad, a nice mix of songs and styles.

Good, but..........2001-12-30

Lest we forget the creator of Alt country and the "No Depression" era: Jay Farrar. How could the be the "roots" without any recordings from Unclce Tupleo, Son Volt and Wilco (jeff Tweedy).

A good glimpse of a great genre.......1999-08-10

In my humble opinion, country rock is THE best music out there, so naturally when I heard this was coming out I got it. Overall it's a very good collection for both the newbies and the veterans. Although some of the songs beg to be skipped (a couple of the artists have better stuff that could have been used) there are a few standouts. Blue Mountain, Golden Smog, and Johnny Cash all have GREAT songs. Personal favorite would have to be "Dallas" by Jimmie Gilmore: alt country done to perfection. Give these 2 discs a spin: it's a good deal for the money.

Debut good time solo slab - 3.5 stars.......2006-08-22

As I write this it seems a long time ago that Motley Crue and Vince Neil fell out. Well it was , but ... oh lets forget the history lesson - what's on the disc?

Ultimately a lighter version of the Crue, some of the darker underbelly being filtered out in the never ending search for the next implant recipient. But that's not to say the record doesn't work. A range of melodies in the vocal lines really lifts this party album and the surrounding band is tight. Acrimony ended up tearing the band apart later but her all is rosy. The guitar playing of Steve Stevens is as distinctive as usual and th guys axe bleeds all over tracks like, well most of them actually. Perhaps the most typical tracks here for prospective buyers to try to hear are :- Sister of Pain, Living is a Luxury, Gettin' Hard and the lead cut Look in her Eyes, last mentioned having a particularly 'Steve Stevens' guitar feel.

Motley fans NEED this while generic hard rock fans could do a lot worse. But don't pay too much for it.

Like every R&B diva worth her salt, Chante Moore must have listened to those 22nd-century girls Destiny's Child while writing Exposed. Released in the latter half of 2000, Moore's fourth album has the ubiquitous stuttering rhythms, silky smooth vocals, and contemporary hip-hop soul grooves that are synonymous with She'kspere's protégés. This effort assures that she's back on the scene with some fresh and interesting material, a guest spot from Chi-town rapper Da Brat, and surprisingly subtle production from Jermaine Dupri. The common theme running through the tracks is the ever-popular one of relationships. Highlights include "Straight Up," the brilliantly catchy uptempo groove of "Everything We Want," and "Take Care of Me," featuring the aforementioned Da Brat. Moore professes to want to be all things to all people, but she lets herself down on the type of songs she was previously known for: saccharine-sweet lovers' soul. So where she excels as an urban bawl-out screamer, on this set, the ballads like "Bitter" and "Love's Still Alright" don't work so well. The sound is too commercial and overblown--almost as if she has an eye on others' (Mariah Carey's, perhaps?) chart success. I'm at a Catch 22.......2007-06-03

I have mixed emotions about this release by one of my favorite female singers. For the most part it's not what you say but how you say it, but in this case, it's backwards. What I mean is I LOVE her voice!!!! Even earlier in her career, the smooth, softness of her singing (mainly from her first 2 releases) makes you wish that you had a woman at home that could sing to you the way that she does. Which leads me to this CD; I STILL LOVE her voice, but some of the songs don't do justice to her capabilities. How she sings is still a wonderful eargasm, but WHAT she sings just ain't what I'm used to hearing from her. Overall, the CD isn't bad.........but if you really want to hear Chante' at her best, grab "Precious" and/or "A Love Supreme".

Chante is AMAZING!!!.......2007-04-14

Her voice hypnotizes. The sultry sound of her voice makes you forget every problem you may have. This is a replacement because my Chante collection mysteriously came up missing. Please check out her duets with Keith Washington (I Love You) and one with Kenny Latimore (When I say I do) actually got married off those two. Don't forget "I Cry to Myself" from This Moment is Mine CD.....priceless. The list goes on so I will spare you. Check her out!

Chante takes the mainstream route with this album, and it works half of the time. The other half leaves lacklsuter, repetitive and uncreative love ballads.

I own all of Chantes cds. I got this quite a while back but I still love to listen to it because it's beautiful. The music is great and her voice is soft and soulful. She's a very underrated singer, but full of talent. I love Take Care Of Me, Better Than Making Love and Everything We Want. This is her fourth cd, and maybe it's not the best out of all she's done, but it's great nevertheless and well worth listening to. I find it really relaxing and great to chill to. If you are a fan of Chante's and don't already own this, then what are you waiting for - you'll love it.

NOT HER BEST BUT SOLID........2005-10-09

I fell in love with Chante Moore after really listening to her second album which I think is a masterpiece. This album is solid even though there are one or two songs I would skip over. There are more good songs on this album than the bad one which makes this album decent. Chante's secret weapon? Her voice. Overall, EXPOSED is a good album but not her best.

This cd does not leave any room for improvement. Håkan Hardenberger is a superb musician, and these works are simply just magnificent! Those who have heard many of Hardenberger's other recordings will be surprised as well - his wonderful sound, technique and style is great, and Hardenberger shows with this record that he is the king of contemporary trumpet music. Without a doubt!!..

What a find!.......2006-08-31

I found this CD by accident and am glad I did. It has become one of my top favorite CDs. We play it every week on Shabbat now. Anyone that knows and understands the Siddur should really appreciate this wonderful music. Some things are timeless and this music is one of them.

Under Exposed is right...but still a good cd.......2004-02-20

Acts 29 Under Exposed is a fitting name for this cd because you prob never heard of them in mainstream circles. The cd is a truly good one but not great.

There are no outstanding jams beside "Confessions" but the remaining songs are good and deal with issues like dating the unsaved, stealing and disappointing God. The cd is definately worth the purchase but its not one that you will blast in the car on your way home. It will however minister to you and I guess that is the most important thing.

Feel free to get it, it will compliment your collection

A Christ-Core SLeeper.......2003-04-30

Acts 29 is an eclectic arrangement of Christcentric Hip-Hop designed to sooth your soul and make your head Knod. It definately fits the bill. Underexposed, as the title implies, is just that. More people should give it a lsten . . . you just may be pleasantly surprised.

If you like that type of pop you will like this. She has a great voice and a very soulfoul edge.

This isnt a great album, i mean its not really a 5 star album but i gave it 5 stars because compaired to her last english cd "just no toher way", this one is like Coco's holy grail. This one is part pop, part R&B. for one thing, i would say that the song belly dance being called bublegum is a joke. its like a beyonce-type song, (think baby boy). The song "all around the world" is the theme song for the korean version of Charlies Angels 2 and its not a bad song. I liked it alot more when i saw her proform it live. Rock it is not bad. its catchy R&B. So Good is a very sexual song about "crawling on all fours" and "riding it all night". there are some boring slow songs. the song "cool" is a sad attempt at being clever and humorous. its about relationships and compairing them to making movies. "gotta clue" is a good catchy R&B song with a nice hook. if im being personally honest, i would say that this cd in NO way reminds me of britney spears. At least not the newer britney. Newer britney has (if i dare say it) edgyer material on her "in the zone" cd than coco has. i would say this cd reminds me more of a mix of jessica simpson and Jlo with a splash of beyonce (without being beat heavy). coco has a very nice voice and i respect her for that. good songs, good voice, hot babe, whats not to like?

Give her a chance.......2006-01-16

When I hear her songs, I thought she was an African American singer. Her voice is strong yet silky. I don't know what the other reviewer is thinking. Although she doesn't have as much of a range as Mariah Carey (who does??) I would compare Coco to Mariah's level but she sounds like Jessica Simpson. This album is very hip and it is very easy to bump her tracks in your car. My favorites are Hush, So Good, Rock It. Its unfortunate she probably wont get as much play as she deserves.

its always enjoyable to listen to coco. her voice is so playful and changable. when she sings ballads u can feel her emotions when she sings upbeat songs u can feel her groove. she really has mastered to use her vocal.
i am really proud of her even tho she might not have made a big success into the us market but i am sure its all in time.she sings well thats unquestionable.
if u havent got this album, u better do so, i am sure u will love it:)

Too Distracting and Typical Bubblegum.......2005-08-24

First off, I'm asian. I used to be a big fan of Asian pop back in my day. I still like some of the old ballads. The thing that gets me is when non-english speakers singers try to sing English. Sure she lived in the US for a while, but her accent is distracting. They always sing slowly, and they tend to sound forced. Even the fastbeat "No Doubt" sort of slows down on the harder English words. An example of this is Shakira. When she sings in Spanish, her voice soars; however, when she sings in English it's forced, because she's not used to singing in a foreign language. It's probably the same with Coco.

Yes, yes, yes... she lived in America for years, but I know when I speak Cantonese, it's hard for me to go back to English without an accent (and I was born here!). She's been there for almost 10 years now, and she sounds like it.

Overall the album is bubblegum... I don't know what to call it. It's not really R&B or hip-hop. Frankly, it reminds me too much of Britney Spears music i.e. Toxic, and I'm too old to be listening to that kind of music. To be honest, she should abandon the US market. No one listens to bubblegum anymore, except for maybe preteens, and she doesn't have a niche to separate herself from all the other singers here. I don't even think she'd win American Idol. I suggest she stick to the Asian market, where she can continue to enjoy her popularity.

P.S. Her fans will probably vote to find this unhelpful as some lame way to defend her. Go ahead. I couldn't care less.
