Oldies but goodies..........2005-10-19
Like any other "Greatest Hits", not all our favorite groups or songs are included, but anyway, BMG did a decent effort to gather a bunch of great bands from the Roadrunner's catalog. A good chance for die hard fans because some of these songs were released only in cassette and LP.
1. "Inner Self" (Sepultura)
2. "Dead by Dawn" (Deicide)
3. "Slowly We Rot" (Obituary)
4. "Sacrificial Annihilation" (Malevolent Creation)
5. "Dawn of Possession" (Immolation)
6. "Infecting the Crypts" (Suffocation)
7. "Zero Tolerance" (Death)
8. "La Ley de Plomo" (Brujeria)
9. "Stench of Paradise Burning" (Disincarnte)
10. "Veil of Maya" (Cynic)
Some Of The Greatest Songs Of Death Metal .......2005-01-19
This is one of my favorite death metal compilations in my collection. I bought it sometime in early 2001. I bought this compilation because 5 of the songs on it appeared on studio albums by bands from the former Roadrunner Records death metal roster and those studio albums that were released were discontinued. Some songs here have also appeared on those old At Death's Door compilation albums also issued by Roadrunner which are discontinued as well. Anyway, knowing the unavialibility of those old discontuined albums, knowing that those old compilation cassettes will not last forever and just for the sake of keeping the availability of those songs alive in my collection, that was the main reason for buying this CD and I'm glad I did.
Before I go on, let me not forget to mention that some of the albums that were discontinued have recently been released. Some are released as "2 albums in one" combos, some as Best Of's and some as individual re-issues with bonus tracks. You can find those in major records stores, the catalog section at the Roadrunner website and even here at Amazon.com. Let me also not forget that the other songs on this album appear on albums that were never discontinued and again, you can find those albums that feature these songs in major record store as well as the Roadrunner website and here at Amazon.com.
Now for my review. This is a death metal compilation album that contains songs that have made an impact in the world of death metal or at lease as BMG sees it. Knowing what kind of company BMG is, it might seem laughable and ridiculous or maybe sacrilegious, blasphemous and insulting to us true death metal heads but in another sense, the company have done their homework. While a lot of the songs here might have impacted death metal in a way, one must not forget and true death metal heads would agree that there are no such thing as hits or hit singles in the world of death metal because it's all about the sincere love for the music and not about the mainstream or the lastest trend. With all that said, the album itself should not be looked at as a joke but looked at as an honest collection of old school death metal which is what it truly is. So this album gets a thumbs up. Some of my favorite songs here are Inner Self by Sepultura, Dead By Dawn by Deicide, Sacrificial Annihilation by Malevolent Creation, Zero Tolerance by Death and The Stench Of Paradise Burning by Disincarnate. So buy this album and crank it up.

Customer Reviews:
Simply the best.......2004-07-13
Brujeria is simply one of the best Mexican Bands of all time. The Hardcore metal sound and the mexican language blends awesome with this power house style of metal. That is why Brujeria is simply the best mexican metal band of ALL TIME.
Kick ass Spanish metal!.......2004-03-25
Now, this is what I call a carreer making heavy metal, and in general good music.
Why do I say a career in Heavy Metal, since it shows the origins of a "band" or "project" if you will, until they get really good at what they do and you can see the progress of it thru these songs.
Why do I say good music? Since once you get to understand the lyrics, it opens a whole new world to you. it shows you things you never heard of and tells you things you never knew existed, that's waht music is all about... and records like this do a good job at it.
If you can't understand what they are saying, the riffs and beats of the album are well worth the money.
If you do, well, enjoy and learn, since there are not too many records like this being done now a days.
Pure industrial/death/grind all together.........2004-03-20
For fans of early supultura, fear factory, napalmdeath, origin, &,slayer...Brujeria, brings an mexican industrial, death, grind album even a lil thrash all mix in just one sound! It's realy amazing how it turns out! For fans of nothing but strictly pure metal that makes you proud even if you don't understand the words! Brujeria, plays , extreme metal at it's best! The best song ? "machetazos" that's my fav track...Buy it!!!
THIS SUCKS!!!.......2003-10-28
The fact that this band exists is a travesty! There are talented musicians out there and this band didn't find any of them! Simply put... I've heard more melodic sounds from a deaf raccoon that was set on fire while being swung by the tail! How does a band like this exist? Too bad there isn't a negative star rating!! To call this crap music is an injustice!!!!
For fans and completists only!.......2001-11-28
The enigmatic Brujeria return with a significant compilation of select tracks from their out-of-print 7"s and unreleased alternate versions of cuts from their full-lengths on Roadrunner and Kool Arrow - though fret not, vinylheads, because this disc does not collect every single track from those classic platters. "Seis Seis Seis," "Santa Lucía," "Sacrificio," and the very Godflesh-y "Papa Capado" (the whole of their 1990 debut 7", Demoniaco! on Nemesis; also included [except "Papa Capado"] on their 1993 debut full-length, Matando Güeros on Roadrunner) show Brujeria's signature grindcore, primitive by today's metal standards but innovative at the time because of frontman Juan Brujo's gruff death vocals sung entirely en Español - which is what enthralled millions to the band in the first place, along with the blatant Fear Factory-inspired guitar riffage. Their 7" from 1992, Machetazos! on Alternative Tentacles, is represented by the dense, growly death of "Machetazos," "Molestando Niños Muertos," "Padre Nuestro," "Castigo Del Brujo," and "Christo De La Roca" (also included [except "Padre Nuestro"] on Matando Güeros). The 1997 re-recording of "Matando Güeros" (taken from the Marijuana 7" on Chupacabra) is particularly prime here with its lyrical addition of O.J. Simpson, and the live "Hechando Chingasos" gives a small taste of their onstage command. The speedy "Poseido" could be an unused track from the Matando Güeros sessions, while "Narco-Peda," possibly an extra track from last year's Brujerizmo album, combines their later bulldozer riffs with vocals rap-delivered à la Anthrax's "Bring The Noise" collaboration with Public Enemy. The newer "Brujo Cirujano" and the manic "Asesino" focus on faster tempos due to their later black-metal affiliations via Cradle Of Filth and Dimmu Borgir. The eroding industrial tones of "Seran Mios Para Siempre - Fantasma Remix" has foreboding spoken-word vocals, while the flaccid "Mecosario - Pinche Peach Torsido Remix" is a bit excessive. Sporting samples from "Pura De Venta" (the intro to Matando Güeros), the techno "Marijuana - Escobar Remix" by DJ Juju is at least more interesting than "Don Quixote Marijuana" (from Kool Arrow's Spanglish 101 comp), thankfully not included here. But the original version of "Marijuana" is thrown in as a hidden track; this humorously twisted take on the dance hit "Macarena" first surfaced as a stopgap release between full-lengths. The CD-ROM features are worth the price of the disc alone: a Mexican news report on the band's inherent evil; the video for "Don Quixote Marijuana"; footage of the band and the introduction of the Mextremist Street Team by the only unmasked member. Indeed, Mextremist Hits should satisfy all Brujeria fans and especially completists, though first-timers should search out the 1993 full-length Raza Odiada on Roadrunner and the ultra-rare El Patron 7" on Alternative Tentacles.

Huh?.......2000-04-07
Ok, when I first saw this CD, I was excited, as I love Venom. SO, I picked it up, only to finid out, all it is, is two different compilation CDs jammed together in some cool packaging! It is New, Live and Rare, put together with Greatest Hits 1981-1994 I already HAD New Live and Rare, so needless to say I was not happy.. It's not a terrible compilation, just wish the packaging wasn't so misleading...

Great Songs But Not the Best Compilation.......2004-06-18
I've already reviewed several old Venom albums, so I won't say too much about the music on this CD. For the most part, it's pretty good stuff, with just a few exceptions. True, the sound quality could be a little better, but what are you gonna do? There are several other Venom anthology CDs that sound better, but this one has a few "rare" tracks that are difficult, if not impossible to find elsewhere. The first three songs are demos that can also be found on "Skeletons in the Closet"; "Under a Spell" is different than the version on "Calm Before the Storm"; "Nothing Sacred", also from that album session, is a song I've never seen anywhere except here; "Dead Love" is also from that period, but was originally released on the live LP "Eine Kleine Nachtmusik" and was originally called "Love Amongst the Dead" (that version was better though); "If You Wanna War" & "Surgery", with Cronos' replacement Tony "Demolition Man" Dolan, are two songs that only appeared here (I Think); "Countess Bathory (Live)" also with Dolan, was featured on a Venom live video called "Venom Live '90". Now onto the disc as a whole. The record company, Deadline Music, a division of Cleopatra (Huh? Whoever heard of those jerks?) are a bunch of inept idiots who have no idea what they are doing! First, on the back of the book, some of the songs aren't even listed in the correct order; second, "1000 Days in Sodom" is listed as live but it's NOT; "At War With Satan" is supposed to be a demo, but only the first three tracks are. It's also not even the complete version of it! Third, there is nothing from "Possessed" or "Eine Kleine Nachtmusik". "The 7 Gates of Hell" is also missing. Those morons at Deadline/Cleopatra don't have the brains to release a Venom recording of any kind. Still, even after all that, this CD (or one of the other "In Memoriums..") might be a good purchase because of some of the "rarer" tracks. But that's the ONLY reason to buy it.

Good but not great..........2002-06-10
While this cd could serve as an adequate introduction to Venom, by no means is it definitive. There is very little here to represent the band's peak period ('89-'93) with lead vocalist Tony Dolan. The absence of 'Clarisse', 'Acid', 'Into The Fire' and 'Crucified' is almost unforgivable in this compilation.
Not entirely sure about the previous reviewer ..........2001-04-20
All the tracks on my copy of the CD were complete. Agreed, the sound quality isn't what you'd get from the high production budgets of today's major labels - but remember that this is original raw thrash from the 1980s - not the Top 40.
This is a "must have" for fans of black metal or thrash (particularly Bathory's early works) who want to know how it all started - but don't feel like buying Venom's entire back-catalogue.
For those who prefer a "cleaner" sound, I highly recommend seeking out Kreator's excellent cover of Witching Hour.
Best of Venom.......2000-08-03
This is a horrible CD. It sounds like the tracks were recorded off of an old scratchy album. Worse, none of the first five songs are complete songs. Beware of this album.
