Product Description
There is nothing compared to Scholomance. Built upon dark, esoteric visions and a poetic lyrical concept drenched in deprivation's bitterness, A Treatise On Love is one of the most unique albums ever to be unveiled in the metal scene. The songs are constructed on multi-layered orchestrations encompassing brilliant radiances of variant elements with bizarre and dazzling guitars, shredding solos and immense keyboard arrangements. Together with the anguished vocals, the music unleashes a frantic dynamism drawing from opposite dimensions; being noble and artful on one end while raw and obscure on the other. A Treatise On Love is a symphonic excellence; imminent to startle and mesmerize! ARTIST BIOGRAPHY: Worldwide music has become increasingly more simple and mindless in recent years. Witnessing the downfall of the world's most exquisite art form is not a easy thing to endure. Music has made life worth living amongst the misery of depression and mental agony. We, the members of Scholomance aim to battle musical incompetence with a blazing double edged sword of technical passion. Here there is no fear to indulge in lengthy solo passages that made metal what it was and still should be. We intend to ignore trends until our physical departure from this earth. We delve into the dark side of the psyche, the truth of emotional instability and manic tendencies. Through self criticism we invoke positive action towards self betterment and downfall of the lazy, hopeless and brainwashed society in which we live. We would like to see art, music and culture once again embraced by every class, however futile that wish may be. The poetry of Scholomance is written to express pure emotion in a philosophical non-traditional sense of grim reality. The Iyrics are first written to stand on their own before becoming part of a musical piece. Writings of Rimbaud, Dickinson, Scriabin and Neitzche are food for thought and written inspiration. The music of Iron Maiden, Cynic, Candiria, Dream Theater, Meshuggah, Voivod, Beethoven, Bjork, Liszt, Rachmaninoff, Arcturus, Loreena McKennitt and In Flames weaves its way into our chambers often and the art of Bosch, Brugel, Venosa and McKean adorns the chamber walls. In 1996 we released our Promo 1996 3 song tape to an unsuspecting underground This was followed by the limited Promo 97 which only made its way to a few personal friends. In early 97 we finally made our way into a proper studio and the 5 song 24 track demo 'I Am That Which Is' was the result. The tape gathered interest from a few underground labels and in February of 1998 Scholomance officially signed a contract with The End Records. The album, 'A Treatise On Love', is available as of October 13, 1998. The two composers of Scholomance run perpendicular paths of composition. One, a path of outright rejection of common theory leading to a bizarre, unique, technical and personal theory, the other a road of strict adherence to classical theoretics. The two paths merge to form a dynamic entity of immense complexity, layers of sound and authentically orchestral compositions. No limits are set. No boundaries are met. 5 out of 5 stars One of my favourite CDs!.......2006-05-10

I got this CD shortly after its release in 2002. I am a flute player and I have hundreds of CDs that feature the flute in all types of musical styles, but this is a CD that I listen to more often than the vast majority of the others. Brian Berryman's playng is wonderful; exquisite and precise, but full of personality! The selection of repertoire is also great, a mix of baroque works based on traditional Scots and Irish tunes and some lovely medleys of Irish tunes played in a more traditional style. This CD will appeal to fans of both baroque music and the traditional music of Ireland and Scotland. You won't be sorry if you purchase this!!!

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant, simply brilliant.......2000-03-11

This band gets my vote for best fresh new talent. Yes, the vocals are black metal, but they fit the music perfectly and after you've listened to a couple of great black metal bands, you start to expect the growls. I hope Scholomance will not abandon this style just to get a wider audience. Musically, the influences range from Iron Maiden and In Flames to Dream Theater and even Devil Doll, as well as classical. The keyboards, guitars and percussion blend together perfectly. It's great to finally see some good black metal coming out in the US.

2 out of 5 stars This could have been a exceptional album..........1999-09-01

There is a lot of nice progressive guitar and keyboard work going on here. It's too bad this band chooses to use silly, irrating death vocals for the entire album, otherwise they really might have had something here. Musically this band is a 4 or even 5. I must say I can't stand the vocals... the person singing sounds like he's coughing, spitting, gargling, or in actuality anything but singing. I just can't believe a band this talented wouldn't do something to change this.

5 out of 5 stars This Metal band is outstanding.......1999-02-24

This band is the most original and titalating band that i've listened to in years. The lyrics, keyboard, and bass are outstanding. They rip up the music scene with their talent. Im making a space in my collection for it.

Mac Morris,

5 out of 5 stars groundbreaking.......1999-01-28

I already saw the denomination of "dark metal" to the music that Scholomance plays, however I have to disagree after hearing the album "A Treatise in Love", because they're much more than that. Here you'll find almost everything: agressive black metal-like vocals, instrumental parts remembering doom, heavy, power, black, gothic and progressive metal styles, awesome keyboard-playing, in one of the most original extreme metal albuns released in 1998. Majestic and melancholic at the same time, it's nothing less than a masterpiece!
