4 out of 5 stars Damn Good (but for the keyboards).......2007-05-09

In follow-up to their hugely successful (and hard rockin') Eat 'Em and Smile, David Lee Roth and band cranked out another big seller, Skyscraper. The energy level on the album is great. Most of the songs are fun, catchy. Some flat-out rock. On the whole, Skyscraper is well conceived and almost flawlessly executed. As on the preceding release, the guitar, bass and drum work are dynamite.

The big flaw on this album -- and for many Roth fans it's a major flaw -- is the keyboards. Face it, most of the time, keyboards, particularly synthesizers, do not compliment good ole fashioned guitar-driven rock. Sure, sometimes a bit of organ works with blues-based rock. The Doors sure put out a tremendous amount of great music which, in fact, was carried by Manzarek's organ/electric piano playing. But such is not the case with Skyscraper. Like many artists of the 80's, including his former bandmates, Roth bought into the idea that rock n' roll needed synthesizers. Brett Tuggle's work takes all the bite out of the songs.

The keyboards not only soften the songs, they date them. Nearly 20 years after its release, Skyscraper sounds like a relic. Today, bands like Jet revisit the kick-in-the-gut guitar rock of AC/DC. Which bands now try to capture the the sound of the late 80's synth rock? None.

In the same way that the Beatles recently "de-Spectorized" Let it Be, I'd love to see Roth (and others) put out rawer (synth-free) versions of their stuff. Alas, albums like Skyscraper don't matter enough to merit that kind of revision.

2 out of 5 stars A disappointment for David.......2007-03-14

This third album of former Van Halen frontman David Lee Roth's was OK but no big hit like the predecessors CRAZY FROM THE HEAT AND EAT 'EM AND SMILE. This album spawned one Top 20 hit in early 1988,JUST LIKE PARADISE. Again,Roth has his "secondary Van Halen",who are none of his former bandmates. But this album was distributed by Warner Bros. just like his Van Halen predecessors(this album was released in '88,ten years after his former band's debut). Cool album, though!

5 out of 5 stars Artful album rock from a true rock artist.......2006-12-06

Dave pushed his super talented band so hard on this they imploded soon after. State of the art for 1988 and impressive to this day. Dave uses EVERYTHING at his disposal to make this ultimate album. It shines from all angles.
The tour for this was amazing as well. Dave singing Panama from a boxing ring suspended over the audience. He then proceedes to surf back to center stage on a giant surf board. The Skyscraper tour was HUGELY popular at the time (contrary to some other comments). It was the 1991 tour that wasn't as well attended. My ears are still ringing from this show.

4 out of 5 stars Classic Dave at his 2nd best !!!!!!.......2006-11-02

Not as good as Eat Em and Smile(imo).. With that being said this is a great cd and the last with Steve Vai !!!!! If you like Roth era Van Halen or Eat Em and Smile pick this up i think youll love it !!!!! Knucklebones,Damn Good,Skyscraper,Perfect Timing are my favs... But not a bad track here !!!!! 4 stars all the way !!!!!

4 out of 5 stars DLR Still Fighting The Good Fight & Trying To Forget Past Issues.......2006-03-29

As the David Lee Roth versus Van Halen war began to lose steam, since both Roth and VH dominated not only the charts but the concert circuits of '86 & '87 with both Eat 'Em And Smile and 5150, what were we to do? Skyscraper hit the scene as VH's OU812 made it's appearance. Was DLR lightening up? Was that a slow, pushy little "I wanna forgive you" song in "Damn Good"??? What was happening? Well....one thing, Roth was shedding some of the dead weight from his Van Halen days. Slimming down. Don Landee was gone and DLR & Steve Vai were going to produce the follow up to the surprisingly sucessful Eat 'Em & Smile. Hooray? Hmmmm. The same lineup as its predecessor: Vai, Sheehan & Bissonette. The touring band will find Sheehan out and Gregg's brother Matt on bass.

"Knucklebones" is a solid rocker with hooks and a lot of potential. Great start to the album and it fills one with hope that the rest of the album clicks together like this. "Just Like Paradise" more popish and keyboard oriented. The video was an MTV staple for a few weeks but not as long as past Picasso Bros. videos. Was that a combover DLR was doing with his hair? Dave starts to show his age with a new haircut and a receding hairline? Hmmmm. "Bottom Line" A rocker, straight up. But the problem with Skyscraper is apparent on this tune. If you own any Steve Vai albums, you will hear what I'm talking about it. There is a distinct Steve Vai sound (See Flex-able for instance) and a distinct David Lee Roth sound and the two don't mix very well. Where "Bottom Line" should make us freak out with rocking madness, we get a strange twinge from the doubled up guitar mix (Vai is a freak for a haromonizer). Sheehan's little bass solo makes us smile, however. "Skyscraper" is experimental David Lee Roth ala Steve Vai, where Eat 'Em And Smile sounds like a DLR album, Skyscraper sounds like a Steve Vai album with DLR singing on it as a guest artist. This is straight out of Vai's Flex-able and that's not necessarily a bad thing, but DLR fans are stubborn and unmoving and that is probably the key reason why Skyscraper was no where nearly as successful as Eat 'Em And Smile. Still a cool tune and strangely enough, one of my personal favorites. "Damn Good" This is David Lee Roth, using his band of hired guns, to sing a tune that is trying to reconcile with the brothers Van Halen. Perhaps his bandmates are trying to cut down the bad vibe coming from the whole DLR vs. VH war. Sounds like something the pacifist Vai would think up. This is decent. Nothing exceptional. Vai on accoustic is a little too much. "Hot Dog And A Shake" another barn burner that just straight out rocks and shows off Vai & Sheehan, feels like it was left off Eat 'Em And Smile. Great shot in the arm. "Stand Up" weird. The slap-bass intro puts me off course. The little Vai lick is kewel. This is very Vai (I like most of Vai's solo work so it's not that bad to me) and yet it's very pop. A little confusing but still a pretty cool tune. Experimental. "Hina" if any song with DLR and Steve Vai and Billy Sheehan can be called filler, "Hina" might be it. But if this is filler, its the cream of the crop of filler. This song reminds me very much like "Little Guitars" from VH's Diver Down album. I don't know. It just never struck a popular chord with me. I can take it or leave it. "Perfect Timing" another straight-up rocker, but there's something missing. This is David Lee Roth going though the motions. Vai rips. Still there's something that I can't put my finger on, but it's not perfection. Weird. "Two Fools A Minute" another show-off Vai & Sheehan song. Great. Strange, but great.

The problem with Skyscraper is that maybe Dave's not so pissed off with the brothers Van Halen anymore and the edge is gone. Another problem may be that Vai's influences are starting to take away some of DLR's acquired magic. He's taking chances and toying around with his usual straight-forward approach. Also, the strange absence of cover-tunes is apparent. Where DLR used to pop on a couple of obscure but rocking covers, Skyscraper is completely original. Don't f*ck with the formula if it works, that's the superstitious way to look at it, but Skyscraper is not the perfection that was Eat 'Em And Smile. Why? Because Dave is letting Vai make him weird? Maybe. Who can say for sure. But we do realize that this isn't going to work for much longer.

Dig it!

5 out of 5 stars Fun show; Brings Back Memories.......2006-07-12

I saw this show in 1966 on Broadway with the original cast. As the other reviewers mentioned it's not a great show, but a good one with some terrific songs. Charles Nelson Reilly is such a physical comedian that his numbers didn't come across as well, but he was hysterical and a true master of the adlib. Julie Harris is the star, and she does zany as well as she does the riveting drama for which she's better known. "Everybody Has the Right to be Wrong" has become somewhat of a minor standard, but Rex Everhart's delivery of "Haute Coture" is an absolute riot. Peter Marshall is customarily solid, and has a great voice. "Man of La Mancha" hadn't made it to Broadway when I saw this (it was still Off-Broadway), and someone else bought the tickets so I didn't have much choice. Still, it was fun; my FIRST Broadway show, and I'll always have a fondness for it. PS~I almost forgot to mention the wonderful show-stopper, "More Than One Way", which, as delivered by Marshall, was quite outstanding.

4 out of 5 stars Not the best musical Comedy, But Underated.......2004-06-25

This a very neat piece of history. The star here is Julie Harris. She shines in all her songs. The Lyrics are thoughtful, and at the same time playful. The highlight of this CD is "Everybody has the Right To be Wrong". Peter Marshall does a great Job, and Charles Nelson Reilly does a fair job. If you want a really good performance from CNR, look no further than the original cast of "Hello Dolly". Get this while it is still available, because it may not be around much longer.

4 out of 5 stars cute if forgettable musical.......2003-09-04

SKYSCRAPER opened on Broadway in 1965, the same season that saw the acclaimed MAME, MAN OF LA MANCHA and SWEET CHARITY. Also opening that season was the problematic ON A CLEAR DAY YOU CAN SEE FOREVER. Although SKYSCRAPER was nominated for several awards, it easily got lost in the shuffle and closed after a reasonable if-disappointing run of 248 performances.

The star of this otherwise-forgettable musical was Julie Harris, who is quite a delightful presence here on disc. She sings a few gems including "An Occasional Flight of Fancy", and a reprise of "Everybody Has the Right to Be Wrong".

Sharing the stage with Harris was a strong and capable supporting cast including Charles Nelson Reilly (HOW TO SUCCEED IN BUSINESS WITHOUT REALLY TRYING and HELLO DOLLY!), Dick O'Neill, Nancy Cushman and Peter Marshall (the original London production of BYE BYE BIRDIE).

The story was in fact based on DREAM GIRL, a play written by Elmer Rice, but the show was so heavily revised during tryouts that the story is quite different. The score by James van Heusen and Sammy Cahn is quite bouncy and tuneful, and the Overture is quite thrilling, too.

All-in-all a great addition to any cast album collection. Highly-recommended.

5 out of 5 stars hayden, in a forest of sound.......2006-11-15

I will admit, before I write this reveiw that I am a Hayden fan. Something about his music stirs my soul. It could be the simple, yet complex songs. It could be the beautiful, but sad songs he often writes. Hayden is an artist full of contridictions, his voice is scratchy and raw, and really not even that good, yet it fits his music perfectly.

As usual this album is warm. It reminds me of a flanel shirt you put on on a cold, crisp day as you warm up next to the hearth. The recording is good, and this is a live album, so it is not studio tight, but I think that is the point. It is a raw sound, that is often apparent in his studio releases, but here it shines through in all its striped-down glory. It is intimate and you can almost feel his breath in the microphone.

If you are a Hayden fan, I recomend this album. It has a collection of songs from all his previous albums and some tracks that are not easy to get in the states. It is a two disc album, and it would add alot to any music fans library. I hope this helped, and you find great pleasure in this artist's latest release.

4 out of 5 stars A truly memorable live album!.......2003-10-22

Hayden's 2-cd live album is, for the most part, simply breathtaking. As well as showcasing some of his best songs (Middle of July, Between Us to Hold, Stem, etc) it captures some cute and funny moments of singer-audience banter. I was at this concert and loved it, and now I have this album to keep forever. I highly recommend it!

5 out of 5 stars live, breathe music.......2002-12-28

this is a great, great album. I'm so happy he put out a live album. I seen him live last year in Detroit and met him, cool guy. I was a fan before that concert so I was excited to see him. If you don't feel like getting his older stuff, which i HIGHLY recommend, get this. bob dylan, leanord cohen, hayden. another musician that has talent,no, a gift. just him, his guitar, piano and harmonica.

5 out of 5 stars intimate and stirring performance.......2002-11-26

When I first listened to this album I realized just how many great songs Hayden has written. It plays out like a greatest hits CD of his 7 years+ musical career. He is such a strong performer and the recording is intimate. And his in-between song bantor is hilarious. It's beautifully packaged in a foldout digipack and includes a booklet of lyrics with photos. Recommended for all fans of this remarkable songwriter/performer.

Bedroom grunge folkie Paul Hayden Desser emerged in the '90s as the acoustic equivalent of an electrified punk-popper, strumming forcefully through bedsit tales of angst and ennui. His stark tunes caught the ear of Neil Young and set off a wild bidding war, though Hayden ended up signing to the fledgling Outpost label for one record. 2001's Skyscraper National Park is everything that Hayden's Outpost disaster, The Closer I Get, was not. While the major-label disc buried the gruff songwriter's melodies beneath big-budget dross, Skyscraper National Park puts Hayden back in his home studio, playing most of the instruments himself and reconnecting with what made him interesting in the first place. Songs like "Streetcar" return to the mope-pop of earlier albums, while the surprisingly funky "Tea Pad" mixes psychedelic fuzz with a shuffle beat. A welcome return. --Matt Galloway

5 out of 5 stars Grunge Garage Folk.......2006-09-07

Hayden's voice quivers and cracks throughout the album, that brings an ambience that makes you feel you should be camping somewhere in Appalachia. One reviewer said hayden is dull, well I guess he didn't listen to the lyrics. Hayden writes sorrowful tales, and songs of nature.

Dynamite Walls is a must listen song, it is what got me into Hayden, and now I really enjoy all his music. If you are willing to take a risk, buy this album. I am sure you won't regret it.

4 out of 5 stars I knew I would like this CD........2004-11-05

I knew, never having heard of Hayden, that I would like "Skyscraper National Park" when I saw the cover art.

Really. I have picked many a record that way, and any football bettor would want a system that has worked as well as it has. It didn't hurt that the reviews were positive and the man's recording technique so, well, not unique but let's say unusual. One can see -- actually see and hear -- why Neil Young would be attracted to him; one might also wonder why Neil wouldn't hate the guy. There aren't too many people who could bring off Young's acoustic-ballad atmosphere and intentionally-off production like Hayden does. (Hayden, as in Valley, as in Yellowstone. And the title too. I knew I would like this record.) He even has the voice down. No, it's not a Neil Young imitation, but he has Neil's knack for coaxing the profound truth out of simple lyrics with spot-on inflection. But back to that cover. Only having seen the moose, I was psyched. When I saw the bear on the back, I thought, contain your enthusiasm, you have neighbors. And imagine when I felt the fiberboard packaging. One can see, hear AND feel why Neil Young might like this guy. He is so not about slick, that's for sure. If nothing else, it is my alltiime favorite CD jacket.

Then I opened the package and read the lyrics to "Dynamite Walls." I didn't know they were that at that moment, but when I heard they were, well, "DW" became my co-favorite on the record with "Street Car." "Tea Pad" rounds out my top three, with "Long Way Down" and "Bass Song" second tier. I suspect the others will grow on me.

And I expect to be playing this one a lot on gray raw days like today. For a long time. It's not perfect. And I think I like that.

4 out of 5 stars Brilliant.......2004-01-14

Its truly the only word to describe the songwriting involved with this recording. I fell in love immediately upon hearing this album. The country theme contained within the overall mood of the music is light, but detectable. In a way its a very quiet and soothing break from most of the subtle baggage that comes attatched to most singer/songwriter efforts. In a way, you can describe this as a very "no frills" record. His songwriting is sincere, honest, and at times very graphic, yet tasteful (for the best example of this, listen to track 8 "Bass Song" and you'll know my point exactly). As a whole, this album is not in any means a savior to a genre of mediocre country tinged musicians and their eager fans (hey maybe it is, but who am I to get one's hopes up too much), but its a great album for when you're out driving or sitting around on a rainy day. This is definitely ear candy at its finest, but with excellent messages to back it all up. Get into this, please. Then, get the live album. You will be in for a treat.
For fans of: Clem Snide, Wilco, Elliott Smith.

5 out of 5 stars I'm Not a Fan & I Love It!.......2003-04-24

Hayden is a remarkable musician. I stumbled across the gorgeous "Dynamite Walls" on my new Dell computer. It has to be one of the most enveloping songs I've heard and I Loved it! Then I went and got the CD and was again stunned by the simplicity and beauty of the music. It was nice to hear the country tinges, as I am a country fan, among every other genre. I am surprised and happy that I found Hayden's talent and I can't wait to discover more!

4 out of 5 stars It's Homemade.......2003-03-15

Reminds me very much of the first American Music Club album: excellent songwriting, seemingly unpolished production that actually drips with "atmosphere", made for late night listening, singer sounds slightly haunted, etc. You could do a lot worse with $$$ than pick this up. Although I've only had it for a few days, I think this is an album that will wear well. Hayden throws in some sounds you wouldn't expect to hear in a bedroom recording, such as the string quartet that finishes "Bass Song", or the sombre horns of "Lullaby". And his lyrics can be unexpected as well: "I was only looking for sex, and I think you knew". He seems not to care if he sounds clever or says "the right thing", which earns him points in my book. You won't hear him on the radio, but if you get this, you may not listen to the radio for awhile.

3 out of 5 stars A piece of history.......2006-06-03

Many of the songs on this recording are not available in sheet music, and although the sound quality isn't "leading edge" it makes me feel as though I am listening to actual performers back in the 30's & 40's, with young and gifted singers like Frank Sinatra, Jo Stafford, and Mel Torme, as well as others who are nameless or unknown to me on this album, and a delight to listen to. Manhattan Tower is why I bought this CD, and I got so much more from it than I bargained for. The illusion I have when I play it is that I am a young jazz artist in New York, feeling the pulse of the city and filling up with everything about being a part of New York.

1 out of 5 stars A BIG disappointment!.......2004-08-19

I bought this CD for the Slaughter on Tenth Avenue soundtrack ballet by Richard Rodgers and Lennie Hayton. But none of the tracks on this CD can be appreciated. It is a mono recording, and that immediately leaves you with a very incomplete sound. No amount of treble and bass adjustment can eliminate the awful tinny sound throughout the disc.

    5 out of 5 stars Amazing.......2007-07-05

Bands and albums like this make me believe that Canadian death metal bands can do no wrong, and I may be right. This album is what you'd come to expect from bands like this: chaotic, technical and progressive. They fit in comfortably with their neighboring bands like Augury, Gorguts, Martyr, and Cryptopsy. They also share something with those bands in that they also have their own unique brand of progressive/technical death metal. Cryptopsy had the brutal, chaotic sound. Gorguts used atonal dissonance and avant garde influences. Martyr had the virtuosity with grandoise guitar solos. Augury were the most progressive, even lending to classical. So what does Quo Vadis have? They manage to blend the technical sound of their peers with harmonies and melodies from melodic death metal, similar to Arsis, but a little less guitar based and a bit more percussive. The vocals resemble Jeff Walker of Carcass fame, in that they are a deep, vomit-like rasp that will send chills down your spine. The guitar blends melodies and small acoustic breaks with technical riffs and solos. The bass is subtle enough to not get in the way, yet strong enough to be present. The drumming is awesome, similar to (again)Cryptopsy's Flo Mounier, but more controlled and less jazzy. These guys definately don't get the attention they deserve, so check this album out!

QUO VADIS - Day into Night.
    -
Honestly nothing fills me with more pride then when I hear a band this good and find out they are Canadian. Honestly, I'm not much of a Hockey Guy anymore...so besides taking
Pride in Beer all I have is Music.
Quo Vadis is an incredible band based out of Quebec. Music wise they are hard to describe. Best comparison I can make is:
The Technical ability of later-day Death, blended with the fury of Sepultura's Arise-Era Thrash and Dark Tranquility's Melodic Metal. (Speaking of DEATH, on their newest album "Defiant Imagination" Steve Digorgio is on the bass!)
All the instrumentation is amazing!!! The Guitar work is precise, epic, and has lots of great solos, The Bass work is actually audible and very busy... this man understands how a bass should sound in Metal, and the Drums... oh the drums... they are fantastic, besides being a master of the double-kickers this man does some fantastic fills and is great with symbol work as well. Vocals are the bands weaker point - they are traditional metal style (Kinda like a Dark Tranquility rasp) but offer subtle spoken word variations which sound really cool... However, the Vocals are only a minor complaint. Overall I find them listenable and even understandable. (Most times) Believe me it shouldn't be enough to turn you off of this stunning musical offering.
Favorite Songs: Absolution, The Shores of Ithica, Point of No Return (Part's I and II)

5 out of 5 stars St. Anger Fans Beware!.......2005-02-28

Quo Vadis has managed to avoid the spotlight for a long time. It's actually a shame, because Day Into Night kicks so much ass. This is arguably the best thrash metal album I have listened to since Death's Symbolic. Quo Vadis has picked up where Metallica left off when they decided to go record The Black Album.

To appreciate the scope and the sound of Quo Vadis you must listen to their music. They are thrash, in a similar vein as Metallica. The drumming is very staccato and dead on (Take notes Lars, being a good drummer is important). What makes Quo Vadis so good is their ability to play. I wouldn't put them into the Metallica subgroup of thrash per se, because they are much heavier, and I wouldn't put them into the Death subgroup, because their sound is a bit broader and more openly progressive then Death was.

Day Into Night is literally a perfect CD, in every regard imaginable. Every song is sonically tight, and each song drives off of the proclivity of the band. The CD opens up with Absolution, an intense thrasher with a beautiful progressing guitar lead. The CD takes off from there, and explodes into a combination of thrash rage and beauty, in what can only be described as "hell yeah." You can bang your head to this music, and yet, you can sit back and take it in like the complex piece of music that it is.

But, maybe the most important song on this CD is Dream. Quite possibly the best instrumental I have ever heard. The beginning of Dream reminds me of Master Of Puppets, but then the song starts to explore, and it opens up and turns into one of the most beautiful guitar-driven instrumentals I have ever listened to. Honestly, Day Into Night is worth the purchase just for Dream alone.

Quo Vadis is quite the phenomenon, because no one seems to know who they are. Sad as that may be, it makes me a little bit happier knowing that while people are digesting that so called "music" crap St. Anger, I am enjoying my gem of a CD.

    5 out of 5 stars So good!.......2004-03-05

Wow. A few days ago by friend recommended I check out this band. These guys are amazing! I can't believe they're not more popular, this is some of the best trash metal I've ever heard. This music is fast as hell with lots of catchy riffs and amazing solos. Their drummer sounds like some kind of animal, with some really sweet double-bass sequences. The vocals are not quite as impressive as the drums and guitar, and are pretty harsh death-metal style. However, they're still pretty decent and fit this style of music very well. The best songs are On The Shores Of Ithaka and Absolution. Dream is also a beautiful instrumental piece. This cd gets 5 stars because it blew my mind the first time I listened to it and it gets better with every listen. Check these guys out right away you will not be dissapointed, especially if you like stuff like In Flames and Sepultura.

    5 out of 5 stars Amazing.......2004-01-22

This album strikes amazment in people instantly. The first thing eveyrone notices is the overwhelming use of double bass to perfection. "On The Shores of Ithica" is definitely the best song on the CD, not to take away from the CD, however. The whoile CD is good but "oh the Shores of Ithica" is unbelievable. It is number 7 on the CD. I am a huge fan of all sorts of metal and this song is by far my favorite metal song. Quo Vadis coordinates drums and guitars in ways I never thought possible. The best word i can think of to describe this bad is EPIC. This CD is definitely worth buying.

This is probably the best album i have ever heard. Quo Vadis is easily my favorite band. If you like bands like Children Of Bodom, In Flames, Soilwork, Cryptopsy, you will most likely enjoy Quo Vadis. Good stuff fellas.

5 out of 5 stars T his cd is ridiculous........2003-12-16

I haven't had much of a chance to extensively listen to this album, but after a few times, I can already tell that it's one of my favorites of all time. Quo Vadis is one of the best bands out right now, even though no one has ever heard of them. Check this out, you won't regret it if you like death metal that isn't boring.
