Scofield meets Vai.......2007-07-05
This was my first Greg Howe, and I probably couldn't have picked a better starting point. Wooten and Chambers are both great musicians in their own right, and Howe gives them plenty to work with (and why isn't Dave Cook mentioned on the cover?!). Would've been a five, but the whole album has an apprehensive undertone, probably due to the fact that they recorded the parts separately (notice the "recorded at __'s home studio" in the leaflet, not to mention the pre-production drums). If these four were in the same room during recording, you would know it. Nevertheless, the songs are solid, just enough drive for rock and all the rambling solos of a good jazz artist. Maybe give Wooten a longer solo next time... Overall, certainly worth a listen.
My faves: Crack It Way Open, Lucky 7, A Delicacy
Buy this!.......2006-11-04
Greg Howe displays his mastery once again, although this time he brought two other monsters, in Chambers and Wooten, along with him. This is a great cd, a must for Greg Howe fans, or anyone else with a good sense for great music. You won't be disappointed if you buy this one!
Jazz Fusion!!.......2004-10-27
I'm sure most people know that Greg Howe was part of the Sharpnel record family. His solo Cds were flashy solo's and pretty hard rocking rythems. With this Cd though he completly blew me away. He gathered up the best line up I've heard in a long time. Dennis Chambers and Victor Wooten. This Cd is just stunning. Very complex Jazz Fusion that is just mind blowing. The Alan Holdworth cover of Pronto Cosmos is also amazing. Greg Howe really shows off how talented he is on this record (not saying he wasn't talented). Greg is just showing us he can play other types of music like Jazz Fusion. I'd recommend to pick this one up if you are really into Jazz Fusion. I'd also recommend to pick up his records he did with Richie Kotzen, those are also very complex but more of a Jazz Rock Fusion style. This Cd is just straight up Jazz Fusion with many twists. This Cd is on the top of my list along with Tribal Tech and Cab. Deffinetly a must for Fusion fans.
I can't stop listening to this album.......2004-09-24
Firstly let me say that I had never heard Greg Howe before buying this album, so I have no basis of comparison to his other works. I love this album. I was especially pleased to find that Wooten actually PLAYS on this CD, rather than simply slapping up a meaningless storm as on some other releases (Vital Tech Tones springs to mind). I also have not heard the original verion of Pronto Cosmos, so I don't think it sucks like a few of the other reviewers have said.
I just can't get bored of this album. It rocks.
Wooten and Chambers on the same CD?!? Of course it rocks!
Masterpiece!!!!.......2004-05-16
A real masterpiece of jazz-fusion-rock music! We were used to listen to stunning and incredible Greg's acrobatic virtuosity, but here a real engine of groove by Dennis Chambers and Victor Wooten makes this album a piece of art! Greg grew up his style, by adding a tasteful jazzy soloing to a funky comping. Simply great!!

Great loose fusion deal!.......2006-01-28
This album has the feel of the old Beck fusion with a shredders twist. It might be to loose and jammy for those wooden shred lovers. So have an open mind to this funky stuff. It's damn good shred jazz-fusion album . It's enjoyable as can be with it's laid back feeling . Anyone who likes Beck, Dimeola, or Morse would enjoy this.
Fierce battle rages on !!.......2004-06-26
First of all I am the great fan of guitar instrumental music. In Japan, sadly enough GREG is so underrated among guitar DIEHARDS.This CD showcases the fine prowess and outstanding versatility of these guitar players. These two guys play their guitar like the two heavy weight champions of the boxing match. They never compromise against commercial music. They did what they wanted to do.So If you hear this CD you will surely be knocked down to the ground and forced to bite the dust. They really had a fierce competition from start to end. This CD never lets you down.
yuk!.......2002-12-20
Half the songs are written by Howe and the other half by Kotzen. I think Kotzen's song contributions are pretty bad, although the first song ("Tilt") has an amazing solo by Kotzen that I may never forget. I think Kotzen mainly junks up the rest of the album. Skip it.
Awesome.......2000-06-21
The best shreders in town play together in this fusion tour-de-force. The 1st track, "Title", gives the tone of the record and is absolutely killer. Richie showcases his usual fast runs throughout the album, while Greg mixes lightning chops with unexpected, cool jazzy licks. A must buy.
fantasy+tecnique=whatta record?!.......1999-11-02
When I first listened to this record I was shocked. This two virtuosos had improved even more than I expected.I had no words to describe it to my friends who were interested in this kind of music. But I think that here Greg Howe shows more mature playing than does Richie Kotzen, but,of course, this is quite hard to be noticed.Although I still think, BRAVO!!!

The Reason Why You Should Boycott FM Rock Stations!.......2007-05-11
I found Greg Howe's music through a Guitar Player magazine review. I have never heard anything by Howe (or Tony McAlpine) on FM radio, ever! This is a huge injustice to the musician, and music fans! This is why Hollywood and the RIAA need to be retired! The only reason I give this album just four stars is that I think Howe would be more successful working as a fusion/jazz-funk artist. Howe can blow away any of today's "rock guitar gods", but will never get the recognition he deserves in that arena (for obvious reasons). Rock will never reach it's potential as long as Hollywood continues with the "blond hair, blue eyes" image it continues to shove onto the public!
Aptly Titled.......2005-03-08
You've got to hear this. Un-believable guitar work. This is my favorite of the 3 Greg Howe CDs I own. Some of the scales and guitar sounds remind me of Alan Holdsworth. This CD is not as hard-core/heavy as Ascend (which I also like). But I think the lead guitar work is even better. I think it's more tasty, more refined, and even more amazing & faster. Incredible. Awesome. Love it. Particularly 1st and 6th song - I've played them a lot.
Thanks Greg - you are awesome!
didn't like it.......2003-11-08
I've bought almost every one of Greg's albums, and, although this one seemed a sigh of relief after the neo-classical laden "Ascend", I still didn't really like "Hyperacuity". In fact I'm finding "Ascend" more interesting.
maybe my musical tastes are changing, but the only song I found fully entertaining on this CD was "Order of Dawn" - an interesting acoustic collaboration with Prashant Aswani...and it is exceptional (disregarding the awful MIDI keyboard bridge)
I still think Greg is an amazing talent, however catchy arrangements (or anything close) from him are becoming few and far between....maybe that's on purpose (?).
Always breaking ground.......2001-10-18
A few rock/fusion guitarists actually create music -- they expand our musical horizons. Greg Howe belongs up there with Satriani (who no longer amazes), Vai (who explores the ugly along with the beautiful), and Morse (who continues to amaze me more live than on disk as he tends to repeat his themes a bit). Every time Greg Howe makes a CD, he does something new, and it's always a surprise. Like Jaco on the bass or Ira Sullivan on reeds, he plays phrases that you'd never think of or hear out of anyone else. Hyperacuity mines a vein of funky riffs and off meters, showcasing, as always, his amazingly fluid chops over fresh vamps or offbeat syncopated phrases. The tunes are all over, from straight ahead fusion, to world beat drum based tunes, to a spare, tight recording of Stevie Wonder's "I wish." Hard to believe he has to tour with 'N Sync to pay the bills!
There is nothing that Greg Howe can't do.......2001-09-17
Just when I think that Greg Howe couldn't possibly amaze me any more, Hypercuity comes out. Greg is unsurpassed in fusion. His playing is very unpredictable and gives the ear plenty of music to pick apart. Greg is without a doubt the most under-rated guitarist ever. If you love guitar playing at it's best, this one is awesome. I own every Greg Howe album, and every one is unique from the other. Buy this one, and you will want the rest!

Not For Ramones Fans.......2001-10-28
Hey, shred and/or fusion fans! Don't overlook these Kotzen/Howe state-of-the-art guitar showcases. TILT and PROJECT team two of the most accomplished axe-murderers out there for some jaw-dropping incendiary fusionfests that manage to overcome the built-in negatives (basically, they were executive-produced by Dr Frankenstein, as both guitarists recorded their parts seperately in their respective basements, with session drummers overlaid onto the basic tracks) with hot, hot, hot playing. Sure, there's something coldly clinical about this approach but there's a lot of inventiveness and even chemistry here that you wouldn't figure on, given the methods used. On TILT, every track features two virtuoso players trying to out do each other with such fury and finesse it's a wonder they didn't catch fire..whereas this followup (just as good) goes for wider sound canvases and a bit more experimentation. You'll need to keep some flame-retardant beside your speakers while playing either cd, though. As you may have figured out, both are strongly recommended.
Kotzen and Howe just being Kotzen and Howe............1999-01-04
This is NOT "Tilt" 2. Richie Kotzen especially seems to have evolved since "Tilt", while Greg Howe seems to always double his technical ability from album to album. Howe's songs are typical Howe, while Kotzen seems to have gone for a more groove oriented style, mixing in some new age/ techno feel. Interesting, yet not quite as satisfying as "Tilt", though still a must have for instrumental guitar fusion fans!

Shred Monster.......2006-06-27
This cd,'Greg Howe', is a great cd, his pure raw talent reaches out and grabs you by the ears, a real shred monster. I actually purchased this cd after I had 'Hyperacuity', I went retro. In listening to his first cd after 'Hyperacuity' I could not beleive how his composition and lyrical voice developed over this span of time. I don't know what cave I was stuck in not catching on to this guy before but I am glad I am out now! I look forward to his future cd's, this guy is a huge talent!!! Yes, you need this cd in your Greg Howe collection.
Had it for years ,a must have.......2006-03-30
Ive had this album since it came out in the 80s. I still listen to this recording every so often and it still feels good. Greg has evolved into a great great player in the rock/fusion realm. Having Billy Sheehan on this recording is a plus as well. His feel and chops go great with Gregs playing. Too bad his bass tone has always been somewhat lacking. And Atma Anurs drumming is a compliment with his cool grooves and that shrapnel drum sound. If youre already into Greg then youre familiar with all his newer projects and recordings. But if not, make it a point to look into his stuff, its a world of musical information.
Amazing!!!.......2006-01-30
This CD is one of the best "guitar" Cd's I've ever gotten. I remember hearing this guy's name in the mid-90's, but how is he not up there with the Vai's, Satriani's, Petrucci's etc. Do yourself a favor and get this CD...its awesome. I won't even get into each individual song because I like them all. WOW!!!!!
A natural gift.......2004-06-22
Greg Howe says that he is influenced by VH but I find he has his own unique style. The tracks are beutifully grafted on this album and the speed changes in the fret work are jaw dropping. I liked Greg Howe in his super metal band HOWE II, but have never really got into any of his funky guitar play. This is a good album anyway, and well worth the money!
Killer instrumental Prowice, Here.......2004-05-09
Super technical fretwork here !!! Showcases some really catchy melodies a mix of Raw technical metal,Funk & jazz. Out of Easton, PA, this fella should teach music at G.I.T. or Berkley. There is no equal to this shredder's class, in original compositions. The first of many astounding releases from an artist, that should have been marketed better. He embarrasses most high fame studio & live performers. Check it out, you won't believe your ears !!!

Another winner from Greg.......2006-03-30
This recording is definately worth having in the collection. Great guitar playing and smooth tone with lots of cool hook tunes and superb solos. I can listen to this disc all the way through. The only downer for me would be the fact that his drummer is playing an electronic drumkit and the drum tone is awful. The drumming itself is decent but not what you would expect from an album of this caliber. Even with that, Gregs playing shines above and beyond any other faults you may find in this recording. Get it and enjoy.
Timeless musician!.......2004-04-18
I was gonna lose my mind while GH was playing...In order to digest his music better, I listened to his work by standing up on my hands, there has to be a new word in the dictionary to describe his talent, cos` the existing ones are too weak to do the work...
A real grower.......2004-03-12
My original review only gave 3 stars. Thing is, I've listened to this several times since and it is a real grower. I guess i was judging it using his debut and 'High gear' as yardsticks. Ironically, there's a lot more subtlety, feel and depth on 'Introspection' than on those 2 albums. Some posters here has alluded to it as jazz fusion. No, it's got far more of a blues feel, except that it's taken blues to stratospheric levels that orginal bluesmen couldn't have dreamed of. Like Satch and unlike most other 'shredders', Greg Howe comes up with strong melodies as well as lightning fast light fingered fretwork. I haven't heard a better player in any genre since discovering 'Surfing with the alien' back in 1988.
One of Greg Howe's best!.......2003-09-21
Like most of Greg Howe's albums, 'Introspection' again provides a glimpse into the "near impossible" of what is capable on a guitar. Greg's effortless virtuosity combines impeccable technique with uniquely tapped pentatonics, tasteful hyper-speed blues licks, and a wonderful sense of melody and rhythm. While most of the tunes on the album lean toward heavy blues laden fusion and straight "shred", Greg manages to mix things up a bit with a nice nylon-string piece dedicated to Jason Becker. Nevertheless, it is Greg's soaring lead playing that keeps you coming back for more. And you will want to listen a few times, if only to confirm that it was in fact a human that played so magnificently. A must-have for any fan of guitar music!
None better........2003-04-24
It infuriates me to hear or read some nimrod's review that any particular guitarist is no good or that some other guitarist is better. Guitarists are artists. If you don't appreciate them, do something else. No one is better than Greg Howe. Likewise, no one is better than Vai, or Johnson, or Satch, or Aldo, or ...
I love listening to Greg Howe (and the others too).

Perputual blistering guitar at it's finest.......2004-07-30
This album is one of my favourites of all time. Every guitar solo on this album is mind blowing and I havn't heard an album with so much energy from a literally unknown guitar player (at the time) since. The riffs are good, the songs are good and if you are into early Van Halen mixed with a bit more speed and technical play, you will enjoy this.
The reviewers below are right.......2004-03-21
This album is awesome! A genuine hidden treasure for hard rock fans. It will make your mind, just get a copy and you'll believe.
What should've been.......2004-03-11
In the UK, the market for virtuoso guitar oriented rock is pretty specialist and so it's only by chance that I got hold of a used copy of 'High gear' through Amazon, 13 years after its release. Until now my knowledge of top class shredders was limited to better known acts that made the cross over to the UK. I'd never heard of Greg Howe until a couple of weeks ago. This is a top quality 'party' rock album in the vein of Van Halen DLR period. Unlike dark and dreary grunge and nu-metal, it has loads of energy and the solos are top flight shreddings, but without being the sort of self-indulgent widdling you find on albums of the neo-classical instrumental variety. Although Al Howe's vocals are more than a tad reminscent of DLR, they work. The bassist and drummer are no slouches either. Why this album never crossed into the US mainstream is a mystery to me.
Mind blowing guitar solos........2004-01-03
I find it strange that this album hasn't been reviewed to date. The guitar solos in the album are breath taking and the music is prity dam heavy. Recorded with Greg's brother on vocals this is fast throughout and also has a guest appearance by Jason Becker of all people. They released a second album after this called 'now hear this' but it was no way as good as this album. Shame though they never kept the flow. 5 stars definately even just for the guitar solo on the opening track!

Because he spends more time working in sessions and touring with the big names, Greg Howe's recorded works are not readily available. Greg is an amazing musician........2006-05-07
The first time I heard Greg Howe was when he played his verison of the Rush masterpiece, "La Villa Strangiato". I was blown by the fluidity of his music.
I ordered "Five" from amazon after hearing it at a friend's. This is yet another mind blowing album from Howe, with chops which will blow your mind, again and again. Almost every song is incredible. Quiet Hunt is a wonderful rendering on acoustic guitar, and Bach Mock is quite Jason Becker-ish.
Lovely album. Don't think twice, buy it.
Another must have in the collection.......2006-03-30
Another great recording from a guy who breathes musical integrity. Bassist Kevin Vecchione plays some great lines with great tone. His bass solo on "3 toad sloth" is melodically and rhythmically worthy of acclaim as is his playing throughout the rest of the recording. Another great feel good rock/fusion output from one of my favorite guitar players. Greg always continues to evolve with his new recordings, this one is no exception. Still wondering why he doesnt go with real drum sounds but the tone is better than his other offerings. Fresh, inspiring, and motivating. A+
Master Extraordinaire!.......2005-03-04
I love Eddie, Vai and Satch and most guitarists for that matter and have been playing for 38 years. Howe is so nice. The guy has chops to die for, yet every note oozes melody. Can't describe it; buy and cd.
Greg Howe's FIVE gets four stars.......2002-12-05
What can i say. He's a class act.If you like Innovative, tasty instrumental cds this is just one of his many albums you have got to listen to.The album isn't over produced, just the essential instruments for the mood and vibe, therefore brings me to say that its one of my favorites.A bass player and a drummer would also like this album because all instruments are very clear and up front. Not a ruff note anywhere.Nothing but talent. The only reason i don't give it five stars is its fairly short and its only greg on everything.
One of amazing Greg Howe`s albums.......2001-09-20
I can`t say where in him albums Greg play the best!I`m guitarist and listening only instrumental guitar music, but this album ,,5`` is one of my favourites and Greg Howe -it`s my private opinion,is guitar player with incredible technique, exotic musicism and unique talent!I try to play some of Gerg`s song and when play them I find very specific guitar touching with inovative guitar visions! The song ,,The Terrace``inspirate me to record my the newest album ,,Reflection of Time``,then you can hear similar music, but diferent in the same time!I like a lot of guitarists but in this moment Greg Howe is the artist that teach me indirect!Thank you Greg and continue to make great guitar music!!!

Customer Reviews:
My favorite Greg Howe recording.......2006-03-30
This is the one folks. For me, this one has everything that makes me be proud to be a musician. Theres a feeling of hightened musical inspiration and satisfaction that overcomes me all throughout this recording. Great rock/fusion groove material that is very pleasant to the ear. Once again though, the only downer is hes still using those electronic drum sounds on this one. Granted hes playing the drumparts himself. I still wish he had a real drumkit for this recording. Still this music sets him apart from most of the other "solo" guitarists in tone and musical quality. Get this before its out of print!!!!!
A Master of The Fretboard.......2005-06-30
I've been searching for great guitars for some time now. I been playing guitar for about 20 years...a die hard shredder. I've noticed that as time goes on, the level at which new up and coming talent is playing seems to be decreasing dramatically. Needless to say, I've been searching older stuff...mostly jazz, progressive, with a virtuoso flair. I was purchasing an Allan Holdsworth CD, when I noticed Greg Howe's name at the bottom of the page. So I search him out and purchased this CD. I am amazed at his playing, and much more at the fact that I'd never heard of him. He doesn't just follow patterns...he knows the fret board. On top of that, the songs are perfectly laid out. For instance, when I listen to Vai or Malmsteen, I like to hear the extent of their technical abilities, but the songs are often lacking substance. With this CD, you won't be disappointed.
A modern fusion virtuoso.......2004-12-01
Greg Howe is one of those artists that at first glance seems to be 'just another big hair guitarist.' Then you start to really listen... and you realize, he's not just showing off a bag of tricks, but he's actually playing something that makes sense musically.
Some would compare him to Joe Satriani - I'd say he's better. He doesn't have the in-your-face theatrics of Eddie Van Halen or the short solo bombast of Steve Vai -- but he doesn't need them either. He can finger-tap and wah-riff and pitch-bend and feedback with the best... but with Greg's work, it all fits.
Russ Freeman of the Rippingtons also comes to mind... but where Russ tends to stay within the established paths of jazz-fusion, Greg isn't afraid to go offroad into heavy-metal arpeggios and fast passages and power chords either.
Gerg's playing appeals to the rock fans with his style, to the jazz fans with his composition. That's hard to pull off. Give a listen. You'll probably agree, Greg Howe is someone with serious talent and artistic sense, who so far has remained under the radar of the mainstream.
Fonkay Metal.......2004-03-25
It does not surprise me to see that many youngsters cannot (yet) tell the difference between Greg Howe and some run-of-the-mill shredder.
Just so you know where I am coming from: I am not a metalhead. Many guitarists are very good, I am sure, but I don't listen to their music because they bore me. Most of them never quite seem to manage to leave teentown.
I know the stuff very well. Been there, done that, all-out, 30 years ago: had hundreds of LPs of everybody with a guitar loud enough to blow their Marshall's. The fact is, the metal genre has produced a lot of pyrotechnicians but, really, very few musicians. You can count them all in one hand.
Then comes Greg. This guy STANDS OUT. A real natural. Amazing sense of rhythm and a great melodic sensibility.
No wonder: his musical intelligence is routed through (primarily)jazz, fused in a Hendrix reactor, using Funk plutonium.
Greg Howe is a FANTASTIC MUSICIAN and really deserves to be noticed more.
I would like to see him sell more, doing what he does best, what is close to his heart, so he would not have to make the kind of "neo-classical" junk he did in _Ascend_ to pay his bills. I cannot imagine a smart, sensitive guy like Greg sincerely going for that crap.
Listen to this guy's playing if you want to refine your ears for music in its FONKAY METAL MODE.
If you know, or want to know, the alchemical secret of how music's soul--yes, soul--moves even through the heaviest metal, give this guy a listen.
A master of the fretboard.......2004-02-24
Without a doubt Greg Howe is one of the best all time shredders around, It's a shame he hasn't gotten more recognition for his speechless playing. My guitar teacher introduced me to Gregs music back in the early 90's and i put him up there with Steve Vai,John Petrucci,Yngwie Malmsteen....If your looking to add to your "instramental" artist collection in the guitar dept. or your a guitar player looking to hear more then the popular guitarist you mostly hear, Then by all means pick up this CD..I promise you'll not be disapointed from the finger blistering scales played on "Faulty Outlet" to some of the most beautiful acustic melodies on "A Song For Rachelle" and ending it out with a blues fusion funk with "Second Thought"...Definantly a CD to wear out!!!!
