Black 'N Blue - 'Ultimate Collection' (Hip-O Records).......2006-10-24
Haven't listened to these '80's metal merchants in some time now. It's been SO long. 'Ulimate...' has twenty tracks of, I guess what is a pretty wide scale of their repertoire. But, DIDN'T they have like just two lp's out in their initial existence, like in 1984-86? Could have sworn they had at least one or two more. Maybe not. Anyway, cuts here that brought back a couple of distant memories were "Rocking On Heaven's Door", the catchy MTV rarity "Miss Mystery", "Nasty Nasty", "Heat It Up!Burn It Out!" and the awesome rocker "School Of Hard Knocks". Line-up: Jamie St.James-vocals,Tommy Thayer(liked him taking Ace Frehley's place on the semi-recent Kiss tour)& Patrick Warner-guitars,Patrick Young-bass and Peter Holmes-drums. Should appeal to fans of Kix,Britny Fox,Tyketto,Ratt and Slaughter.
New Rules.......2006-08-17
To paraphrase the great Bill Maher, it's time for some new rules, people.
First, if your only exposure to this band and album is listening to the 30-second clips provided here, you have no business reviewing the album. That's like reading the first page of each chapter, then reviewing the book. Leave the review to those of us who have actually heard the whole album.
Second, if you don't like hair metal or AOR/melodic rock, you probably shouldn't be reviewing this album either. You can pretty much tell what kind of music you're going to get by looking at the band photo. If you hate hair metal, then don't buy hair metal albums. I'm sure there's a Coldplay album out there that's just aching for your review.
I feel so much better now. Now I actually own Black `n Blue: Ultimate Collection, so I'd like to share some observations.
Despite hailing from Oregon, Black `n Blue was a pretty active player in the L.A. metal scene. They released four studio albums from 1984-88, but for whatever reason never quite found the success that their peers in Ratt and Motley Crue achieved. Musically the band had a sound that was equal parts Ratt and King Kobra. It was definitely L.A. hair metal, but instead of being overly sleazy it had an AOR polish. It's upbeat and melodic, and what it lacks in originality it makes up for in pure energy.
2001's Ultimate Collection features a whopping 20 songs - more than half of the band's studio output! If they had added another disc they could have covered the band's whole catalog. Still, the song count is pretty impressive when you consider that most "greatest hits" packages have at best a dozen tracks. The songs have been digitally remastered, which is a nice bonus. There is also a hefty band history in the booklet that gives some insight into this often overlooked band. All told, Ultimate Collection serves as the perfect introduction to Black `n Blue's music, and is ideal for newcomers. Longtime Black `n Blue fans will no doubt prefer buying the remastered studio albums or tracking down the limited edition box set.
NOTE: There is allegedly a Black `n Blue reunion album in the works, but it has yet to see the light of day. In the meantime, guitarist Tommy Thayer is busy playing for KISS and vocalist Jamie St. James recently replaced Jani Lane as Warrant's frontman.
On of the 80's best.......2006-03-26
Rock solid album!! Takes me back to the glory and grandeur of the metal hair bands.
Low par.......2006-03-09
I only listened to the samples and I summize not buying this album (unless your a girl that wants to stare at the album cover and go gaga over these pretty boys). Sub-par talent, mainly regurgitated guitars/leads and terrible vocals. They make bon jovi who I think are ok seem kickin ass; and I loved some big hair bands- believe me (Ratt, Dokken and White lion) anyways... They pretty much SUK!!!
A really over looked band.......2006-02-09
I first heard B'N B on KMET'S Local Licks show in early 1983.
They played the demo version of Chains Around Heaven. The same version that wound up on the second pressing of Metal Massacre. I was hooked. I saw them perform live at least 10 times over the next 2 years and this is where they really shined (despite another reviewers comment that they were "hit and miss"). These guys were born to be rock stars. Truly one of the most enjoyable bands I've ever seen live. When their debut arrived in 1984 I was quite pleased. Almost all of their live favorites are on that first disc (except "Violent Kid"). This for me was the best thing B'N B ever recorded. Six of the best songs are represented here. Their second release, Without Love, is widely criticized by hardcore metal fans because of this albums slick production and poppy songs. I loved it. Great hooks, fun songs and lots of hair. I am amazed this was not a huge hit. Bon Jovi, who was not yet a household name and eager for a hit of his own chose Bruce Fairbairn to produce "Slippery When Wet" after hearing the job he did here. There are six songs from "Without Love" on this collection. Their last two records were both produced by Gene Simmons. Nasty Nasty and In Heat are my least favorite B'N B releases. By the time these records came out in the late 80's I had all but given up on this type of music so they don't have any nostalgic value for me, but when I replayed them recently I was surprised how much I enjoyed the songs from this time period.
Like all collections there are songs I would have liked to see here and others that I think should have been left off, but overall a lot of fun and worth getting if you like sugar coated metal ala RATT, Dokken and Bon Jovi. Enjoy.

Customer Reviews:
A real gem of the 80's.......2005-10-31
If you haven't heard of Black n Blue, consider that Gene Simmons produced some of their albums, John Kalodner says he still doesn't get why they were not huge, and Bruce Fairbain got the job of working on Slippery When Wet because Jon Bon Jovi loved his work with this band. It's classic 80's hard rock, on the Bon Jovi/Poison side of the tracks, and this box contains four albums, each in a cardboard sleeve that replicates the original album cover ( but let's not kid ourselves, it's done like this to be cheap ), and a DVD of a live performance, which obviously is still VHS quality, but at least it's not going to wear out. There's also one booklet, which talks about the different albums, and it's all in a cardboard box. Overall, I think the quality of presentation is not great, but it's worth it to own these classic albums, and in the end, who cares what the box looks like - the music rocks.

Holiday blues comin' on? Well, put a spike in `em! Here's the zaniest, wildest and just plain sickest Collectors' Choice Music exclusive yet79 tracks from Spike Jones and his City Slickers! These represent Spike's complete Standard Transcription sides, but these tunes are anything but standard; Mr. Jones brought his full bag of tricks for these non-commercial recordings (made in Hollywood during the early `40s). Add to that the fact that most of these have never been on CD or even LP, and any lover of Spike's mayhem-filled mixture of laughs and hot licks is going to flip over this set! Notes and great pictures accompany this 3-CD walk on the wacky side from the greatest novelty band of all time.

Great set of wartime rarities.......2003-05-14
Spike Jones was the king of the novelty song performers, with hits like "Der Fuehrer's Face" and the parody version of "Sheik of Araby" becoming huge hits during World War II. This is a swell 3-CD set, gathering a full eighty-one of Jones' best tracks from his 1940s heyday, drawn from an extensive archive of radio broadcasts made for the Standard Transcription service. The tightness of his City Slickers band is amply demonstrated in these manic, kookily orchestrated performances. Toots, squonks, blatts and bleats whiz by at lightning speed, as one daffy song after another will delight devoted fans. Amazingly, Jones had the unusual, almost unique ability to perform a repertoire almost entirely made up of comedic material, and yet still be quite listenable and engaging. His jazz chops were hardly in question, and from time to time Jones would dash off a non-novelty ballad or two, just to give the rubes something to think about. Of course, just as often he would perform a song that *sounded* like a straight ballad, but would turn out to be another goof. (One great example of this is the sultry "Serenade To A Jerk," sung in slinky, burlesque tones by Myrtle Horwin.) This collection may seem a little overwhelming, but like his studio recordings, these radio performances have a certain brilliance and joie de vivre about them that will leave you enchanted. Definitely worth checking out!

Standard Transcription Collection.......2003-04-12
This collection has remastered material from the large stack of Standard Transcription discs from the early 1940's. There are many songs not recorded on RCA, many on the theme of wartime ("48 Reasons Why"), and the quality is excellent. The packaging is threadbare but this is an essential CD package for true music lovers.

An Awesome CD!!.......2004-01-03
the first thing that you must understand is that i am a metalhead to begin with. One of the bands that I like is a metal band by the name of Opeth, they are very heavy and dark, but they have accoustic classical guitar all throughout their music, with metal. I decided that it might be cool to check out some classical guitar because I love how they do it in their music. So I bought this CD and loved it! I love their mideival sound that they produce, wonderful!
(Pacific Coast Highway is the coolest track(8)!!)
The best LAGQ cd. Period........2000-04-09
This was and is such a remarkable disk, nothing has yet come close to match it's mix of styles and songs. It definitively marked the quartet's goal to step beyond the traditional classical into an adventurous realm of jazz, rock, african, americana, and even tossing in a little humor, without becoming "crossover" or "world music" as they now have. York's compositions "Quiccan" and "Bantu" move convincingly/decisively, unlike his drifting, overly subtle style of late. "Labyrinth" is such a great piece, I wish Ian Krouse would compose an entire cd for the group (his "Folia Variations" on their Evening in Granada" cd is also great). The Copland arrangement is full of energy and the Basie and Sousa pieces are just plain fun. This was the reason everyone started talking about this group, which makes it all the more sad they're going the direction they are now. Come back! Come back!
A successful marriage between classical guitar & pop forms........2000-02-23
The L.A.G.Q.'s wide ranging abilities are well represented in this eclectic collection of twentieth century music. Ian Krouse's Labyrinth is a striking, intense homage to Led Zeppelin. His characteristic use of hammering dissonances resolve masterfully into fun, driving, bluesy rock passages. Andrew York's Bantu is a perfect platform for the quartet's ability to utilize the guitars extended techniques. The piece opens with all four members playing different rhythms and timbres on the body of the guitar. Each member then drops out of his rhythmic pattern and into a harmonic framework, one at a time, until all four members are doing so. The piece is concluded in a retrograde of the same pattern. One may question a guitar quartet's ability to do justice to the dynamic nature of Aaron Copland's Simple Gifts, but this outstanding performance should put such concerns to rest. Each piece on this disc is executed with the kind of exuberance and taste for which the Los Angeles Guitar Quartet has become known.
Exciting music won't let you keep still........1999-04-14
The first song in this album has a strong, repetitive driving arpegio that is thrilling to a classical guitar lover.

Killer!!!!.......2006-07-13
Many fans say that Gene Simmons contribution to the band was their greatest mistake, I'm not pretty sure at all because, although is true that "In Heat" is their "less good" album, "Nasty, Nasty" is just as great as their self titled debut album, and a half star above "Without love" (because of the killer guitar work provided by Tommy and Jeff). Jamie's voice sounds better than ever, and the rhytm section provided by Pete and Patrick pound like a heavy rock. This album is full of hard rocking anthems ("Nasty, Nasty", "I want it all", "12 o' clock high", "Kiss of death", "Do what you wanna do"), midtempo rockers ("Best in the west", "Rules"), a ballad that they were forced to include ("I'll be there for you", which by the way, is not bad at all), and last but certanly not least, my favorite Black'n Blue song of all time:"Does she or doesn't she" (twenty years later I can still listen to this song again and again, and I still enjoy it like hell!!). If you never heard before of the mighty B'n B, after you listen to this album you're going to get addicted to this band. This album is killer from start to finish. Highly recommended!!!
good cd thats overlooked.......2005-09-10
Since the day this cd came out it's been overlooked , unfortunately because it got lumped in the "Hair Metal" category. This was a band that should have been huge but got the shaft because they were from the East coast. L.A. was the only thing that mattered at the time and look at all the crap it churned out because of the L.A. label. Black 'N'Blue wrote good catchy songs that were memorabe and rivaled the sexual entadres of the early Kiss era. Great cd with stand out tracks like "Kiss Of Death","Best Of The West","12 O'Clock High", and the title track. All in all it's a fun disc that has been overlooked ,even my 9 year old requests Black'N'Blue over today's radio forced fed junk so that says something for the music and writing itself. What do you have to lose 18 bucks? Big deal you probably spend that on video games with less value. Try it you might thank me later.
Take a break from the remade & overproduced stuff of today........2005-01-17
You know what was great about 80's metal...it was so damn fun! Sure everyone knows Ratt, Poison, Motley Crue etc....but there were so many great bands that just couldn't break into that top tier, but still produced some great rock n' roll. You may have never heard of bands like Autograph, Keel, or Black n' Blue..and if you are tired of today's music scene with lip-synch pop stars who can't write a note of music or play one guitar chord..then this is the perfect time to discover some of these "lost" bands. And Black n' Blue is the perfect place to start. I enjoy all four of the band's initial albums, the self-titled debut is just a good fun hard rockin' album, and while "Without Love" adds a more commercial sound to the band, it's still great to crank up tunes like "Strange Things". The final album is also pretty good, "In Heat" was the make or break album for these guys....which ended up breaking them. But "Nasty Nasty" is my favorite album by Black n' Blue. Just a solid album from top to bottom. The catchy guitar riff that opens the disk with the title tune will have you playing air guitar immediately. The drum and bass combo opening "I Want it All" is great, and I would have loved to see these songs performed live. There really isn't a bad song on the cd, and if you are into 80's hair-metal this disk is a must have! Get away from the bland, remade, over-produced stuff put out by the latest American Idol winner and discover some of the great music you may have missed the first time around.
Music Rocks! Artwork??.......2004-05-18
I had this on cassette back in the 80's but due to an unfortunate speaker accident while working on my truck I managed to erase part of my favorite track on this album - Kiss of Death. I have been looking for a long time to find this on CD and couldn't believe I found it here. It doesn't even come up in the search. I found it looking at other BnB albums. My only complaint with this is the poor quality of the artwork on this CD. Some of the printing is blurry. It almost looks like a bootleg. However, the sound quality is awesome. Just as powerful as I remember it!!! I also bought the first release "remaster" at the same time. Same problem with the artwork - looks like they used an inkjet printer to print it. But the CD itself sounds great! Overall, I can live with it, but I think amazon should tell you it is an import. Like I said, it almost looks like a bootleg. But, if you like BnB like I do and want a CD version, the artwork is a minor complaint.
Black N' Blue's Best Release.......2004-03-02
Following on the heels of 1985's "Without Love," the band hit gold with "Nasty Nasty." The album spawned a semi-hit, "I'll Be There For You," that got a little airplay, but it is far from the best song on the album. For me, that honor goes to "Does She or Doesn't She." That is one song I can play over and over without getting tired of. But honestly, there really isn't a bad song on the album. I think I might even go as far as saying this is one of the best hard/melodic rock albums of the late 80's. It really is that good.
Gene Simmons got involved with the band around this time. He had a hand in the production of this album and its lackluster followup "In Heat." The band gives a nod to Kiss in the title track, "Nasty Nasty." During the bridge of the song, they pop in the guitar bridge from The Elder's "Only You." Really cool! Also, Kiss drummer Peter Criss shares vocals on "Best in the West."
What you get here from Jaime St. James, Jeff Watson, Tommy Thayer, Patrick Young, and Pete Holmes is an exceptional album of melodic hard rock, probably one of the very best releases of 1986. I've worn out two tapes and have finally managed to get a copy on CD. This is indeed the band's very best album.

Great compilation.......2002-05-10
I don't actually own this particular compilation, however, since I own nearly every recording represented on these discs...I think I'm qualified to comment. This is a wonderful representation of the high quality of work that DRG Records does.
The previous review is way off the mark. This is definitely not a waste of time or money. This is 25 years of preserving Broadway shows, Off-Broadway shows, studio recordings (mostly from the city center concerts), etc. So what if they "aren't as good as the original", DRG is preserving many recordings and artists that other mainstream labels don't or won't. You have wonderful recordings from Brian Stokes Mitchell, Nathan Lane, Debbie Gravitte, Tyne Daly, Anthony Perkins, Joanna Gleason, Marin Mazzie, Carol Burnett, Heather Headley, Patti LuPone, Barbara Cook, etc., and many of these are from Original Cast Recordings just as they appeared on Broadway. This is an excellent sampler of the work going on at DRG. No...I'm not an employee...just an avid listener and collector of theatre recordings.
A disappointment.......2001-12-15
There's a reason you've probably never heard of most of the songs and shows on this album, not to mention most of the artists. This is a second-rate collection of second-rate numbers performed by mostly second-rate artists. In the case of the shows that were revivals, the performances on the original cast recordings were better. Don't waste your money.

A GREAT DEBUT.......2006-07-06
This guys emerged exactly in the middle of the 80's so called West Coast Metal Explosion, but they were from Portland, Oregon. Maybe that's why they sounded different. Too bad they didn't make it big cause no doubt they had the talents. This is the heaviest of their four albums, but still with catchy hooks all over it, includes such instant classics as "Chains around heaven", "I'm the king" and "Hold on to 18". After this album, they went to a lighter direction. If you don't own this album yet, you better hurry up. One of the best hard rock bands of all time, period.
A Fine Album From Metal Year 1984.......2005-11-28
Black N Blue were a young band from Oregon that never achieved big success despite possessing very mature songwriting talents. I first discovered them when I saw the video for the classic Hold On To 18! I seem to recall that lead vocalist Jaime St. James was still wearing braces. This album contains several great songs that I never get tired of hearing. My favorites are Strong Will Rock, Hold On To 18, Wicked Bitch, One For The Money, and Chains Around Heaven (excellent!). There is also a good cover of Sweet's "Action". Their next album, Without Love, is also a good album but I started to lose interest with Nasty Nasty. As many fans probably already know, guitarist Tommy Thayer is currently playing Ace's role in Kiss. A new Black N Blue album is expected some time in the near future. If you can find this cd used grab and crank it!
A Classic.......2004-07-27
If you dig 80's metal and don't have this, your collection is lacking.'Wicked bitch', 'chains around heaven', and of course 'Hold on to 18'-all rock!!!
Takes me back to the mid 80's -- a good time for me .............2004-06-06
Great album - had it on cassette and lost it years ago -- Can't believe I'm rocking on it 20 years later. the remaster job is great.
Here's the Blow by Blow:
1 The Strong will always Rock - Fist pumping anthem to get you started
2 School of Hard Knocks - Somewht cheesy, but of the best variety.
3 Autoblast - Favorite of a bada$$ buddy of mine who drove a Silver Mustang Boss 302 -- flipped it in a hayfield with Def Leppard High 'n Dry cranking..
4 hold on to 18 - Saw the video on metal shop and the reason i bought the album.
5 wicked Bitch - problems almost every night, she's got to whet her appetite.
6 Action - I can take or leave this one. I don't hit the Next Track button -- about it.
7 Show me the Night - About the same as the previous selection - not bad enough to skip.
8 One for the Money - IMO, the Filler turns back to Killer on this one. just give it to me honey - one for the money!
9 I'm the King - Again, more cheese of the best variety.
10 Chains around Heaven - Great "Pop" Metal, whatever that reeally is.
Hall of Fame.......2003-10-22
This CD is a treassure if you like 80's USA's Heavy Metal. In my opinion this band was influenced later (NASTY NASTY is still a great production but never like Black N' Blue) by music bussiness money promises (Kiss's Gene Simmonds take care of them) and forget how powerful band they were ............... At the end they became "one more 80's Heavy Metal Band).
I've been searching this CD for many years and was almost impossible to get it. I Finally got it and keeps liking me like It was so long time ago.
If you want to know how powerful they were in the beggining, please buy "Anthology Remaster" CD ............. It capures Black N' Blue soul in the raw.
Other BLACK N' BLUE CD you will find great is NASTY NASTY ............ It really rocks, and sounds great ...................
You won't regret spending your money on these 80's treassures, please believe me ............... I am a die hard fan of 80's Metal.

Unconvincing retro junk.......2004-04-10
Soul music is great. Funk is great. This, however, is neither soulful or funky and by no means great. This is lousy wannabe music made for lazy losers. I tried to like it. I really did.

Great stuff to groove to!.......2003-05-06
Loved this album. Gary Floyd's voice recreates that 70's Super Fly vibe and Mushroom funky grooves fit right in.

it does to 'classic radio' what classic radio would never touch!
rg
digest it!.......2003-05-03
well all it takes is an open mind AND an appreciation for the real classics. first off let me note that you have to forget about the ramitdownthethroat classics that you've been force fed all these years on so called classic radio. these remakes go beyond what you are soooo used to over the years. slip away &
the pusher are just simply to 'out there' to actually compare them to the originals, and for me that makes them so enjoyable!
and for your listening enjoyment they take a journey on some lengthy orginal jams. ok some of this cd falls flat on its
[behind], keep on running the old spencer davis classic and leon russell's delta lady simply could of been left off this
otherwise trippy and jamming masterpiece. so get it if your adventurous otherwise leave it alone and buy some boston. btw
any one remember the cd the beautiful people's if 60's were 90's?
this cd is a whole lot in that vein but a whole lot more fun!
the funky honky

A nice sophomore effort.......2006-07-13
This is considered their "pop album", which by any means is necesary a bad thing. To tell you the truth, from the first time I listened to this album, I loved it, specially the first side (back in the LP days), "Rockin'on heavens door" is a great way to kick off the album (I love the change of rhythm at the end of the song), followed by the infectious "Without love", "Stop the lightning" and "Nature of the beach", the only complain I have about these three tracks, is that Tommy and Jeff should've put more guitar solos on them. I'm not really into ballads so even though "Miss Mistery" is not bad at all, I would`ve prefer the guys or the company had decided to put a rockier tune instead. "Bombastic Plastic" and "Strange things" are heavier and with a strange mood that make them very interesting to listen to. "Swing time" is simple but with a very contagious rhythm. I like it. "We got he fire" and "Two wrongs" are a pair of good straight rockers. Overall, this is a great album, but I give it 4 1/2 stars because of the guitar fact that I mentioned at the beginning. Anyway you slice it, Black'n Blue rules!!!
black n blues best cd by far..........2005-09-08
i had this on cassette & wore it out in th 80's im happy to see it on cd. i will have to buy one. i think this was black n blues finest work to date before gene simmons ruined them. my favorite tracks....miss mystery, without love 7 stop the lightining. id say the band was best on their first couple of recordings up to this cd without love. its been eons since i seen a black n blue video on mtv,but it was really good days when they did play. this band never really broke on the high ground mostly in part of not having a direction, gene simmons, & little fm radio airplay. after black n blues without love cd came nasty nasty & in heat both of which were commercial failures "gene simmons" if black n blue woulda kept the direction the first 3 cd's were going & stayed away from gene simmons they woulda faired far better in the music biz. also check out black n blues ultimate collection cd its worth it.
Discover This Band!!.......2005-01-18
Do you like 80's hair metal, but are sick of listening to "Girls, Girls, Girls" and "Slippery When Wet" for the thousandth time? Well good news....re-issues of one of the most talented, but overlooked bands, Black n Blue are now available. I wore out my cassettes I owned of "Without Love", "Nasty Nasty" and the self titled debut album around the time Clinton was first elected and have been waiting for the cd re-issues. All of the albums still sound great, you will be banging your head and playing air guitar all the way to work. "Without Love" seems to have the reputation of being BnB's "pop" album, and while it does seem the music is a bit more commercialized, it is still a really good album. "Strange Things" may be BnB's best tune, the hook, the catchy chorus, a true 80's metal-head delight. If you are tired of the retread music offered today..then take the time to discover some of the bands you may have missed the first go around. Sure....you know as soon as the opening guitar chord hits that you are listening to music that could only have come out during the Reagan era...so what? These guys had talent, and the music is still fun. Break out the Spandex, get 2 or 3 bottles of hairspray for that big hair look, and rock out like it's 1986!!!
and a half.......2004-09-07
This is a good album, but it is also indicative of what happens when a band gives up too much creative control. I know some reviewers here like "Nature of the Beach", but come on folks, that song is queer adn isn't really them. With all that said, that style of mix sold millions for Bon Jovi for "Slippery" so what do I know.
This probably should be a 4 star because of tracks 1,2,3,5, and 7 alone. I'm certainly not implying this album is bad or that it's not a worthwhile addition for any fan fan of good times 80's hair metal of the Crue/Ratt variety - they were one of the very best of that genre.
Refreshing.......2004-07-18
I loved this album the second I slapped it on. It's more pop sounding but they do it well. To say it's the worst album, wrong for sure, that one will always be In Heat. Miss Mystery is mellow but it flows so good (Loved the video) Nature Of The Beach reminds me of summer and always will. Without love has a great hook and one of my favs. Yes it could've rocked a little more but that's my only critisism. CAN'T WAIT FOR HELL YA to come out.
AND FOR THE LAST TIME, STOP COMPARING THESE GUYS TO KISS, THEY DO NOT SOUND ANYTHING LIKE THEM.
