ISSUE RESOLVED ON THE EUPHRATES.......2005-06-19
One question I might find among the more difficult in my life would be - which is my favourite Handel oratorio? I suspect that my answer would generally be 'the one I heard most recently', and that, as I write this, is Belshazzar. It is a magnificent thing, a heavenly thing. It has taken me longer than it should have to come to an appreciation of what makes Handel the phenomenon - as a genius, as an artist, as a craftsman - that he is, but I am comforted to reflect that no less a genius than Haydn, at the age of nearly 70 gaining a more thorough knowledge of Handel in performance, was driven to say that he felt a mere apprentice. In his sense of how to pace a dramatic narrative, in his instinct for how to use the human voice in song and above all in chorus, in the matchless flexibility and adroitness he displays at word-setting and in the audacity of his melodic and harmonic effects I can think of nobody who can approach Handel on his own terms.
Belshazzar was not a great success at the box-office, although this may have had more to do with difficulties in the casting than because it was deemed insufficiently biblical for oratorio, which seems to have been the fate of Hercules. It seems to me to be perfectly well described as oratorio in other ways too, with (for one thing) the extensive use of the chorus that we find in, say, Samson but not in Hercules. The one passage that cries out for visual effects is of course the apparition of the moving finger itself. Even here the composer can go a long way with sheer power of suggestion, by the strange unaccompanied violin figure creeping upwards and the frightened brevity of the vocal numbers. Otherwise for me Belshazzar is as much an oratorio as Samson is. It has the same librettist too, the crusty and formidable Jennens, who had also collaborated with Handel on Saul and on Messiah itself. Jennens' full text is not provided, but I think if you read the synopsis first and then follow the work from the headlines to each number you will have no difficulty in catching the words, so clear is the enunciation by soloists and chorus alike. As usual, Handel was driven to make alterations to the score for practical reasons. He had been a little concerned about its length, roughly 2 hours and 50 minutes in this performance, but where he wishes to be expansive he gives us full measure - two arias in Act I scene 4 take well over 7 minutes each. The liner-essay (a good one, by Anthony Hicks) goes into the issue of the version of the score used here, and I personally have no problem with it.
I have no faults to find with the performance in any way. Pinnock is an established specialist, the instruments are period instruments and vocal cadenzas at the end of the arias are kept minimal. Anthony Rolfe Johnson, James Bowman and David Wilson-Johnson are tried and trusted Handel singers and at their best here, and Nicolas Robertson and Richard Wistreich in the smaller parts are every bit as good. The part of Cyrus is a soprano part, taken by Catherine Robbin, and when I thought I heard just one touch of strain in `Destructive War' in the final scene she makes up for it instantly in her superb duet with Arleen Auger in the following number. Auger as Nitocris the mother of Belshazzar has the biggest part, and she covers herself with glory all the way through.
The recording is perfect, and when I saw an aria entitled `Destructive War, thy limits know' near the end I felt a sharp sense of irony in the year 2005. Cyrus, Handel, Jennens, you should all have been living at this hour.
Enjoiyable, but lacking, too........2004-08-16
This 3CD set of George Frederic Handel's (1685-1759) "Belshazzar", from Archiv Production, a division of Universal Music, is proof again that transfer from vinyl to tape to disc brings with it improvements in listening that make the purchase a worthwhile addition to anyone's listening library. Written in 1744, "Belshazzar" is an oratorio in the operatic style that is wonderful oratorio, but lacking the true depth one expects to hear in an opera. London opera audiences of Handel's day agreed, as both "Belshazzar" and Handel's other offering of the period in the same style, "Hercules", were not terribly successful. Instead of the scheduled 24 performances only 16 were given and Handel never offered a full season of oratorio again. The Libretto by Charles Jennens (1700-1773) is, as the production notes say, meant "not only to show the fall of Babylon but to show it as a fulfillment of divine prediction and to confirm the biblical testimony by reference to classical history." There's only one problem, as good a quality as the CDs are, it is not possible to follow the full libretto and the accompanying booklet includes no text, which is a shame. I think the listening experience would have been increased immeasurably if one was able to follow the text of what is being sung. Nonetheless the dramatic narrative is fluid and even, and the English Concert and Choir provide nice balance to the less full vocal passages, as in Disc 3s "Oh Glorious prince", cut 10. There is enough of this throughout to keep one's interest, but disappointing if what one expects is another ""Messiah".

Suprise packet........2003-03-14
This CD is excellent. Most songs are very good. Initially, I did not like the singers voice, but I got used to it and I appreciate the quality shown. The guitarist is very good, he doubles a few of the solos early on, and his style is classically orientated. He definely is a huge fan of Ritchie Blackmore and Yngwie Malmsteen. Highlights include "Save me", "sacred ground" & "Still holding on" where the guitarist lets his hair down re the solo.
This is a great album!!.......2002-03-07
I bought this album because i have heard michael vescera before with yngwie and i really like his voice. this is an awesome euro metal sounding album but with an aggressive guitar sound. JUST BUY IT....download save me or sacred ground, to c if u liek it they r great songs. one of the best recent metal releases.
Guitar virtuoso and vocalist extraordinaire team up!.......2001-07-26
Featuring the amazing guitar talents of Joe Stump and Mike Vescera's vocal virtuosity, the new opus by Reign of Terror(formerly known as Joe Stump's Reign of Terror)reaches a musical higher ground.Mike Vescera,of Loudness,Yngwie Malmsteen,Obsession,MVP,etc.,sounds fantastic adding power to the already beautifully crafted neo-classical metal that manages to avoid sounding like an imitation of Yngwie all the way.
Joe Stump and Mike Vescera at thier respective peaks.......2001-05-04
The Reign Of Terror is a combination of metal forces. From the vocal end we have Mike Vescera (ex-Loudness, Yngwie Malmsteen), on guitar is Joe Stump (solo artist, Berklee College of Music Faculty), and the rhythm section are Jay Rigney and Matt Scurfield both of the industrial progressive metal band EVENT. This CD contains some of Mike Vescera's best recorded vocals, especially on tracks like "Save Me". Joe Stump is able to let loose for many 30-120 second solos which rival any of those on his previous solo releases. Overall, this is Mike Vescera's best vocal work since Yngwie Malmsteen's "Seventh Sign", and composition-wise this may be Joe Stump's best effort yet. Fans of hard driving european sounding power metal and shred will love this album!

The Epitome of Classic 1980s Metal .......2004-11-18
Reign of Terror - wow, what an album! This is one of those albums if you appreciate classic metal you have to own. Pawn your Metallica, trash your KORN, recycle your Slipnot - you must own this record in thier place.
Its been 17 years since this album was first released by Enigma Records. This record has lost none of its excellent songwriting, passion, screaming guitars, edge and a well earned place among the best metal records of the 1980s.
This album rocks harder, faster, more melodically than anything Metallica has ever done. But we all know Metallica were the cheesepuffs of metal even back in the 80s....
Back to the review of this fine record. One of the beautiful things about this record is that its material is exceptional from stem to sterm. It also flows brillantly - which is a lost art in todays music.
The album starts of with Metal Fuel (In the Blood) which sets the tempo for the record. Man Against Machine follows it up holding the energy and attention of the listener. Call of the Dark is the next cut - good stuff, Siberian Vacation is up next. Finally things slow down a little bit but for only a moment, SV picks right up once you get past the intro which culminates in one of the heaviest bridges I've ever heard in a song. The next tune - Psychoradio at first listen seems to be out of place on Side 1, but it gives a momentary change of vibe then gets rolling.
Side 2 gets going with my personal favorite song on the album Streets of Berlin. For a metal song it combines the urgentcy, the passion, guitars and the melody that seldomly converge in metal. Its simply a high water mark in metal IMHO. Next up Spellshock is a stomper similar to Side 1's tunes. Reign of Terror, the next track.... damn. I can't say enough about it. It takes you on a hell of a ride and throws some curves at you as a listener you'll just be like me sitting there going - damn (in a good way). The last track - We Rule the Night - a wonderful closer. Fitting, a little slower tempo but rougher and edgier. This is where vocalist Micheal Furlong really hits a good stride. He is singing across from the meat of the tune in the early part of the song which is just well, kick*ss.
Sadly, I don't own the release on CD at this point. I have the 1987 Enigma Records vinyl of the album. So I cannot comment on the bonus tracks availible on some bootleg versions out there.
Wild Dogs were a relative obscure metal band compared to the corporate whore metal and psuedo metal bands of the era. That put WD in a catagory of only the lucky knowing about them.
The bottom line of this whole review. Get this record, it is up there in a elite metal category by itself. It screams 17 years later to the corporate, devoid of any depth NUmetal fluff of today - and schools them on how to play metal. This stuff here is the real deal.
Reign of Terror is simply a essentual purchase for metal fans.

PALACE OF BLACK is an exciting Metal project featuring vocalist Michael Vescera (MALMSTEEN, REIGN OF TERROR and LOUDNESS) and guitarist Paul Marko (NOVEMBER 67). There is more than a heavy nod to the grandfathers of Metal - BLACK SABBATH on this album. The first riff from "My Anger" determines much of the style of the album from the word go and the playing is skilful if not overwhelming. Vocally Vescera is in fine form songs such as "Seasons" show depth and imagination and strong chorus plus mature song writing. This would set more than happily on any later SABBATH release. Again "Burnt Offerings" retains a crisp driving riff with a melodic chorus passage. Wind down CANDLEMASS a few notches and you will get a sense of what PALACE OF BLACK are trying to achieve. It's nice to find a Metal band that doesn't want to hammer everything into the ground with frenetic riffing and drumming. The almost languid pace at which some of the songs canter along is refreshing as it is appealing. "This Side Of Summer" is a monster ballad that starts slowly and crashes in with a stomping riff. PALACE OF BLACK are firmly rooted in 80's Heavy Metal and are different in that they are not playing million miles an hour Epic Power Metal nor European Melodic Metal. If you fancy a change and a gearshift or two down then Vescera and Marko may well be a welcome respite.

Yngwie without the Yngwie.......2006-03-22
This is not for the fan of AOR but if you like guitar shredding without the crap lyrics then this is probably the place for you. This album really takes the genre of shredding power metal and presents it in a very respectable format. All the qualities those who love this genre have come to expect are here.
Great production, searing guitar lines and soaring vocals by none other than Mr Michael Vescera himself. This guy did wonders for the Japanese band Loudness, performed admirably for Yngwie Malmsteen and now has given this release some real oomphh.
Tracks that should really be listened to are Save Me and Sacred Ground - the first two tracks. If you like these then you'd love this album. It reminds me somewhat of Euro metal but not done by Europeans. Which is a nice change given the number of euro bands who've desperately tried to sound American over the years.
The reasons for me not giving this release five stars are that this sort of stuff gets a little too self serious sometimes. The Reign of Terror avoid falling too far into this trap but it's still there slightly. Also, much as I love his voice I can see someone getting a little tired of Vesceras' histrionics.
Also the liner notes do induce some cringing.
Overall a strong release from a mob worth watching.

A masterpiece from excellent musicians ; guitar virtuoso Joe Stump and former Yngwie singer Michael Vescere. This album has cool riffs, powerfull hich tech solos and beatiful music and very good, memorable songs.Another great power metal album.Actually I think that it is also a neoclassical album.Especially the solos are very classical inspired.(Blackmore,Yngwie).Guitarists:Get ready to cry.
