Truly lives up to the title.......2001-08-23
I found this via some happy accident in a record store...saw that it had The High Llamas, Dusty Trails, Cibo Matto...bought it on a whim and man what a sweet surprise! I've no idea what the film is about but the soundtrack definitely takes a bossa nova/lounge space age bachelor pad kind of stance. The High Llamas songs both have guest vocals by the girls from Stereolab..which is always a treat.Looper's "Burning Flies" is cool anytime.Orchestra Carlos Cordara is awesome.I might never see the film but whoever was responsible for putting together this soundtrack and sequencing the songs is a subtle master of the form.Highly recommended.

ESSENTIAL Power-Pop Listening.......2006-01-14
I have to agree with the other reviewers, but for slightly different reasons. I can see that one reviewer compared the Doughboys to Samiam....but I can see that he wrote his review the day after the WTC terror attacks, so I'll assume that he was out of his mind. A better comparison would be for you to consider Husker Du (but far more upbeat with better drumming)crossed with Tommy Keene.
Pound for Pound, I consider this album to be the best power-pop album of the early 1990's. Even considering the over-produced style of the album, which actually makes the album sound 'underproduced,' the production quality can't make you over look the fact that just about every song on this album is excellently composed. But make no mistake, this album doesn't sound like a mainstream band in the making, this just sounds like straight out college rock.
Great guitarists, excellent drumming....but most importantly, even distribution between Kastner and Cummins in terms of songwriting. I've always felt that the best Doughboys song is 'Intravenus de Milo,' ironic because Cummins is the contributor who is most often overlooked in this band. This album was a soundtrack for my high school years, and 15 years later it stills has kick to it. Ah...longing for a time when indie/punk/power-pop bands actually knew how to write songs and create their own sounds.
If You Were Stranded On An Island............2002-09-29
This would be a must have. At times it's almost like listening to two different bands with the two different singers. They don't duet but both take charge of a whole song. When this came out over a decade ago it was considered punk but in todays hipspeak it would surely be emo. Somehow after all this time this gets thrown into the stereo at least once a week. It really is a classic.
Gone, not forgotten!.......2001-09-13
Music like this just isn't aroung anymore. They use everything they have. Great song structure, searing leads, vocals that tear into you, and heartfelt lyrics. Fan's of Samiam should like this band. Long gone but never forgotten!

Ommagawd! .......2005-04-26
This CD is a catchy, melodic feast. Mr. Sharp weaves influences from George Harrison, Emmitt Rhodes, Mid-Beatles into a unique power-pop sound. Get used to his rather shrill vocal and you have a pop masterpiece. My favorites are: Wrecking Ball - I like the melody BETTER than Strawberry Fields. That's one my wife walked in on and said..."what is that? I LOVE it"; Tea and Sympathy - great guitar and great instrumentation. As one reviewer said...get this CD

Power-pop aficionados...you need to listen to this one. Period.
Sharp pop.......2001-04-20
When an artist dedicates his album to the memory of (Badfinger's) Pete Ham, and has a ringing endorsement from (The Raspberries') Eric Carmen printed on the CD overwrap, it's a pretty safe bet that you are about to hear some classic power pop. Sure enough, electric guitars jangle, acoustic guitars shimmer, and descending scale "Strawberry Fields" mellotron flourishes hum merrily all the way through Ken Sharp's "Happy Accidents". While the music is somewhat derivative, Sharp's upfront admission of influences and his obvious enthusiasm in recreating a late 60's-mid 70's British pop-rock sound wins you over. I should mention that Sharp's singing voice, while quite adequate, may take a certain period of adjustment for the listener (that's just my opinion...I could be wrong!). A perfect "summer album" for those who hanker for the halcyon days of 20/20 and the Three O'Clock.

faint praise and happy accidents.......2001-08-11
This is the debut album of a rising band from Louisville, Kentucky who are lead by Billy Bartley. Without a doubt, this is great music! If you are looking to make a comparison with better known musicians, well let's see: Boby Dylan, Tom Petty, and a touch of Counting Crows. Their sound has the right combination of guitar rhythm, drum beat, rockabilly and pleasant mystery. All of their tracks sound fantastic!! I am particularly fond of "tongue tied", "contradiction intention", "grace", "we can go", and "i feel". Don't miss adding these rising stars to your cd collection.
Mind of their own.......2000-07-09
I have been going crazing trying to find this band. I heard one of their songs on the radio while on vacation and could only remember the title of the song, "If you can". I am happy to report that I found the album and love it. Finally a band with their own sound. William Bartley's voice is incredibly sexy and mysterious as you will hear right off the bat on "How Beautiful are Thee". slackshop's sound is one I hope continues to grow. It's nice to finally hear a band out there with a mind of their own.
..just brilliant.......2000-07-07
Next to nobody has heard of these guys but this cd is really awesome - I know some people who thought it was a new Tom Petty record or something and I guess I can hear that in there too. But it's really just a right combination of wailing melody, shimmering guitarplay and just beautiful music. It does take a few listens to really grab you but most music I really like ends up being that way anyway. What can I say? It's always a delight to find such unknown bands before they make it to the big league and usually lose some of the magic. I dunno if these guys make it there, but it'd be a shame if they didn't. Check it out.
