5 out of 5 stars The New Wave Ben E. King.......2006-01-12

I always struggle to describe the wonderful music of Mink DeVille. He showed up in the NY & NJ clubs at the same time as the new wave (Talking Heads, Television) bands crested. But he was a completely modern rocker with a Latin twist with strong influences from Ben E. King. Passionate, romantic, rocking, wistful -- Willy's keen songwriting and distinctive vocals combined with the best rhythm section I saw saw at a live performance to make a compelling musical product. This double set combines two fine LPs into one essential bargain.

1 out of 5 stars Stink Deville.......2004-12-05

Dissappointing...simply stunning. I consider myself to be an avrid music listener/buyer/critic, and I am incensed. I bought this stinky album because of the high reviews it recieved on this very netsite. I thought could trust it, but I guess was trajicklly mistaken. Thanks a lot bums.

5 out of 5 stars One of the great American rock bands.......2004-11-19

Mink Deville were, quite simply, one of the great bands. There's no other way to put it. True, they never got too far on the road to popularity. Maybe, in the post-modern era, nakedly romantic love songs aren't cool any more. But, man--these guys had some incredible songs. "Harlem Nocturne" is a fun bonus, but the albums really stand on their own. Willy's read of "You Better Move On," with his endearing sincerity, is a highlight of the album.
These aren't quite the best albums in the Mink Deville corpus, and I'd recommend Cabretta and Le Chat Bleu (in that order) as a first entry point to the band. But they continued to subtly refine and deepen their sound throughout their life as a band, and Willy Deville is, quite simply, a wonderful songwriter. This compilation is well, well worth the time of any music fan who still believes in the idea of love.

3 out of 5 stars Just glad to have these on CD.......2001-09-11

Coup de Grace and Angels Fear to Tread were two VERY different Mink albums for many reasons. Coup de Grace was easily Mink's hardest hitting, rock-oriented offering; much of that's due, I believe, to drummer Tommy Price's appearance in the DeVille lineup. Price powers his way through tune after after, creating a power that was absent in any previous (and subsequent) DeVille albums -- either as a band or as solo artist. The material is strong, not great. Give Me One Good Reason, Maybe Tomorrow, and Love Me Like You Did Before are the rockers and translate in real fine live performances when Willy takes them on the road. The album is not wholly representative of DeVille -- just another side to a remarkable artist. Where Angels Fear to Tread is my personal least favorite album of all DeVille efforts. The material is not very compelling and most, if not all, of the drum parts are programmed. It's jarring to hear these two albums played one after the other, because of the gross difference in percussion.

5 out of 5 stars double platinum!.......2000-02-23

I only know the separate albums, but this double pack sure is value for money! The two best albums by Mink Deville on one CD, packed with some of the best songs DeVille has ever written. Emotion, musicianship, lyricism, it's all here, folks! This is what Mink DeVille stood for: gritty production, soaring saxophone, heart-felt pain... Willy DeVille is the most romantic songwriter this side of the sun, I think. And the pleasure just seeps through every note.

3 out of 5 stars Not bad, but not their strongest........2006-10-11

I've never really gotten into this album, despite coming back to it many times trying to do so. I loved the groove of Time Travelling Blues, the spacey jams on Frequencies and The Big Black, and Thieving is simply the greatest hard rock album since the turn of the new millenium. This one however... not so much.

It has it's moments, noticeably the monumental riff on 'Getting High on the Bad Times' and 'Stinkin O' Gin' is a terffic closer but besides that, the album doesn't have the variety of some of their others and many songs seem to remind you of the ones you heard a moment ago. The playing is tight, the production is good (hat-tip to Scott Reeder) and the artwork is something else but on the whole, nowhere near their best effort. Punk fans may even find something for them. If you're new to the Goblins, get 'The Big Black' or 'Thieving From the House of God' as both are stunning. Make this one your last purchase from their catalogue.

5 out of 5 stars ... KICKS YOUR HIPPY A$$!!!.......2002-11-04

Better than Time Travelling Blues (which was also rad.) The guitars and bass are a bit more fuzzed out, drums a little faster, and vocals more aggro thanks to the production of ex-Kyuss/Obsessed bassist Scott Reeder. Hey, even John Garcia sings on two of these songs (another star.) A nice cover of We Bite by the Misfits is near the end of the album. Basically, combines all the goods of Kyuss's Wretch (fast rocking and heavy jams) with the refined sound of And the Circus Leaves Town (perfect bass and guitar tones.) ...

4 out of 5 stars Orange Goblin has changed...and it is good.......2002-09-18

This CD is definately of a more hardcore slant v.s. the old style, slower sludge metal. I'll admit that it was the psychedelic tracks of previous albums (particularly "Frequences..") that turned me onto this band in the first place. But I love this new CD..much better than the last one, Big Black. The John Garcia (of Kyuss) tracks are just icing on the cake. This is a fantastic CD, but dont be looking for the psycho-stoner rock of before..this is a much more aggresive sound for them...and it is good. Enjoy!

4 out of 5 stars mind melting horror? mind melting metal.......2002-09-03

having been suitibly impressed with frequencies, i bought this album. i was not dissapointed. The difference from previous releases is a change in sound. with a more prominent punk persuasion. The john garcia tracks are a nice touch, reminiscent of unida. Part of me feels a loss of style however it is more than made up for with attitude.buy it.

3 out of 5 stars Slipping a little.......2002-08-18

Orange Goblin's first 3 albums revived my faith in modern bands to produce good stuff. As an old timer who still has the Black Sabbath and Alice Cooper LPs that first appeared when I was a teenager, OG was a welcome discovery after a decade or three of whiny, self-absorbed [junk].

However, Coup de Grace just doesn't grab me the way the first three albums did. I like every song on every other album, but for some reason I just haven't been able to get into this one. The rhythms seem more frantic yet less powerful, and the vocals step out in front of the music rather than blending in with it. IMO 'Red Web', and to some extent 'Stinkin O Gin' would be the only exceptions.

I know bands evolve, its a fact of life, but since there aren't any other reviews of this album, I thought I'd toss this out here and hope for a return to roots that aren't that old for these guys yet!

4 out of 5 stars Fantastic Groove Jazz.......2004-12-22

I also saw these guys at the Montreal Jazz Festival this past summer and I was so blown away that I ran right out to get their record. If you like Jazzanova or LTJ Bukem, you'll love these guys. And they're not DJ's; they're musicians. They've got some other stuff available on iTunes, which IMHO is even better than this record, but this record is definitely not one to pass by. And see them live if you ever have a chance.

I saw these guys live at the Montreal Jazz Festival and they were brilliant! I hadn't heard them before, but heard the music and had to check it out. Their CD is very nice as well. It grooves but is also very inventive. There's not much electronic music out there that is this high quality, and the fact that they can do it live adds to their appeal. I can't wait to hear more!

have you wondered what would happen if two great minds got together with no other ambition but to cook up some of the best funk you can ever imagine. that is what this album is.
down tempo funk/jazz for days. you can equally listen to this album rolling in your ride or just chill-n in a dark basesment with your fly honey. it makes you want to flare up a smoke and chill.

5 out of 5 stars Could listen to this music all day, all night, and beyond.......2004-01-07

I have never felt compelled to write an Amazon review until now. I heard one of K&W's songs ("Vaccine," to be released on new CD) on internet radio and it blew me away. Instant addiction to this group. Like no other jazz/ambient/urban/downtempo (undefinable) music you ever heard. You'll love this music if you like great percussion, like the repetitiveness of ambient rhythms, and appreciate the BASS, because this music has the best(...) bass-playing you ever heard. If you like sounds that are a little spacey/atmospheric and mysterious, with hip, urban percussion and beautifully composed chords and progressions, buy this album and download the MP3's on Amazon as well. Many tracks start simply, and build and build in complexity, with layer upon layer of variations in texture and harmonic interest. Great synthesized sounds, beautiful piano, chords, and harmonies that are gorgeous and interesting and complex. No one element dominates the others; they blend like they're all part of one liquid sound, and I find this balance between percussion, keyboard, and bass very unusual and satisfying. A few have a little bit of vocal that sounds almost more percussion than voice. The rhythms are fantastic- this is great music to dance or work out to! Westdal's bass is in a class by itself: fabulously interesting melodic bass guitar that I love listening to just on its own and for its cool interplay with keyboard. Check out "Battle of the Giant Robots" -About three minutes in there are four notes that build into a four-chord upward progression that's just a knockout. For their beautiful subtlety, listen to "Onikoroshi," which starts out with strong percussion, but then slowly adds very subtle harmonies--you really have to listen to it a number of times and the subtlety grows on you. That happens with a lot of their songs-- the more you listen, the more you hear. "Sunset" is a great example of how mellow and sweet the sound can be, mixed together with an edgy, hip beat. They mix so many elements, so well. Best example of all, and my personal favorite: the sophisticated "Nebula." It's available on "New Sound Theory 2" and as Amazon download). It has it all-- their great percussion, wonderful piano, and an amazing bass line... one of the most gorgeous, well-integrated jazz type pieces I've ever heard. Keston and Westdal are inordinately talented composers, way beyond the level of what's being produced now. This is the first CD I've ever bought in my life where I truly love every song (usually if I find even two songs I like on a CD, I consider it not a loss). So if you like any of it, buy all of it-- every song is unique but has the same wonderful musicianship and complexity.

3 out of 5 stars Plasmatics - 'Coup De Grace' (Plasmatics Media).......2006-10-12

As it turns out, this is pretty much rough and raw-sounding demos of the Plasmatic's 1982's album 'Coup d'Etat'(see my review). While it's fairly simply to thoroughly enjoy hearing alternate versions of tracks like "Put Your Love In Me","Country Fairs",Motorhead's cover of "No Class" and "The Damned",you'll likely notice this title is sort of 'touch and go'. In other words, certain tunes hold up good while others are nearly annoying.A decent compilation of previously released material, but it's safe to assume this disc is for the completists.Long live Wendy O. and the P-L-A-S-M-A-T-I-C-S!

5 out of 5 stars True Frenzied Passion.......2005-11-11

This ablum simply rocks! Raw, grainy, explosive - they all describe the great Wendy O Williams. Truly a visionary, she was a true original and is greatly missed. Rock on, Wendy!

5 out of 5 stars A raw, fresh performance by the Mistress of Taboo!.......2004-01-26

Made in 1982, "Coup De Grace" marks a musical transition the Plasmatics had endured between the high-speed, nihilistic punk of "Beyond the Valley of 1984" and the roaring heavy metal of "Coup D'etat." Recorded in New York's Electric Lady Land Studios, this album was originally intended as a demo, and it was locked in the Plasmatics' vault for 20 years. Now, ravenous fans all over the country can enjoy "Coup De Grace," which contains fresh, raw versions of "Put Your Love in Me," "Stop," "Mistress of Taboo," "The Damned," and others. In addition, listeners will hear an exclusive track titled "Uniformed Guards," a cynical rock tune about America's obsession with violence, war, and the headline news. The tracklist clearly indicates the band's attempt to put some solid meat onto their sound, which was treated with very little alteration. The guitar and bass rhythms were amplified and perfected while the drums echoed off the walls. Frontwoman Wendy O. Williams performed the songs' simple lyrics with seductive whispers and incredibly ferocious growls. While being one of the few porn stars to successfully conquer the male-dominated world of metal, she was an uncompromising performer dedicated to her art. She and the Plasmatics will forever be missed.

5 out of 5 stars Raw and Beautiful.......2003-05-09

This is the demo for Coup d'Etat, and it's absolutely insane. The same songs but performed with an energy level that is practically live, with all the raw passion that made Wendy O Williams so infatuating. "Put Your Love In Me" is so tough it's almost frightening. It's incredible that she was performing this at the time AC/DC was playing "Let Me Put My Love Into You" (which was getting incredible radio play), and yet Wendy was black-listed, arrested and beat up. She really scared people. I don't think she ever got the credit she deserved for the passion and the force of her social statements.

If you like your music a little cleaner, get Coup D'Etat (which is also great), but if you want to hear a little more of the intensity that made Wendy O. Williams irreplaceable and without peer, try this.

5 out of 5 stars First you love it, then you love it more!.......2002-05-02

I bought this CD the day it was released and I now have 5 Plasmatics albums in my possession, including Coup De'tat. The tracks on Coup de Grace came out a year before Coup De'tat and are much rawer in sound than that those of the latter, which is a polished studio album. Coup de Grace is excellent because it, in fact, is a demo, and it shows listeners where Coup De'tat got started from. Even the arrangements on some of the songs are different, and the band had a lot less money at the time. To me, this never-before-heard album marks the transition between Beyond the Valley and Coup De'tat. The Plasmatics will live forever!

5 out of 5 stars The TRUE sound of the underground.......2004-07-17

In a time when not-so-fly-as-that rapper 50 Cent and his G-Unit clowns have become the emperors of the hip-hop empire, ultimately because of the beefcakes' connection with Dre, it is understandable that you're starting to drastically lose faith in hip-hop. But fear no more, Automato are here to replenish that faith by creating a fresh, intelligent and highly creative style of hip-hop.
There are multiple reasons why Automato deserve recognition. Firstly, and unlike the rest of the hip-hop World, New Yorker Alex Frankel and his fellow musicians prefer live instruments to turn-tables which contributes greatly to the authenticity of their music. Lyrically, Automato challenge the traditional hip-hop convention of using `nigg**s' or `ho' in every sentence and instead opt for other intelligent manners of expression. Finally these authentic hip-hop beats and thought-provoking lyrics are perfectly sewed together by none-other than DFA, the production masterminds behind `The Rapture' and other electronica-influenced artists.
In all honesty if it wasn't for these New Yorkers I would openly state, like DJ Shadow did in `Endtroducing', that `Hip-Hop Sucks'. Automato are the real thing, go check them out!

      5 out of 5 stars Amazing.......2004-06-05

This was a perfect mixture of nice beats, and great lyrics. You gotta have it

      3 out of 5 stars AU TOMATO.......2004-05-13

The fundamental idea behind Automato, a six-pack of stage-nameless New Yorkers, is creating hip-hop music in an organic manner. Utilizing only live instruments with subtle touches of turntable/computer, their goal (I'm assuming) is to mirror the role of the producer, but in a band environment where everyone involved has their own piece to bring to the table. The sound they produce is strictly East Coast and brings to mind comparable pioneers of the field such as The Roots and Beastie Boys (without the blatant comedic overtones). Mind you, Automato sounds different than both of these previously mentioned acts; but like both of them, they forgo the idea that only one person should be responsible for the outcome of their music.

Handing over the production duties to DFA duo, Automato shows a slightly different end result to a vastly populated genre of beat-driven music. In a time when producers pride themselves in making hip-hop that is abstract and progressive, these guys take a different route and do a fine job of playing things safe. Now, this may be a bad thing to some; but it may also very well be a good thing to others. Automato shows great potential to be marketed to a larger range of audience than most of the hip-hop being released in the underground. But for those who like a bit more anger and/or "street" in their hip-hop, be forewarned that this might not appeal to you.

Many of the songs share the same characteristics: blunted bass, organic head-bobbing beat, keyboard filler, and emceeing. Occasionally there are great moments when they utilize turntable scratching (which is slowly becoming a lost art form - unless the whole album is dedicated to it) to give a bit of depth to the album. And Automato even gets off track from time to time. Surprisingly enough, it's when the guys get off track that the good stuff really begins to shine through.

I'd like to say Automato is an album worth slobbering over, but it's not. A lot of people who are not familiar with how far hip-hop has progressed may find themselves intrigued by the concept of a band playing hip-hop without two turntables. It's something that has been done many times before, however; with the same basic results. Therefore, I'm not going to assume that Automato is out to re-invent the wheel with their music. If this is the case, then this is an excellent endeavor. Let's face it; not every album has to be something to study or lose your mind to.

Staying focused on the fundamentals of their inspirations is an important aspect of Automato's resulting sound. It shows in every moment of the album. It's only a safe effort, though, which is not enough to make it overly easy to write about. I definitely wouldn't count these guys out. My guess is that the mainstream press will get a hold of them in a couple years and Automato will be the center of attention for many hip-hop fans in the mass of society; and they'll feel like they've just heard the most forward-thinking album in the world.

An incredible debut - a must listen for anyone interested in new hip hop that doesn't regurgitate the same sounds as everyone else. Innovative, a solid album that'll have you bopping your head without even knowing it...

I've always been a hip hop fan, this group is a little of my beaten path but i bought the album on the advice of a good friend and haven't stopped talking about it. Fresh sound with lyrics worth listening to. The beats are beautiful, at once jazzy, funky and raw hip hop. This s#!t is golden!

This is by far one of the best pick-ups I have made this year. The lyrics are impressive due to their grittiness and range of topics. The beats are amazing. However, the word "beats" does not capture the true range of auditory sensations you will experience while listening to this CD. To get full enjoyment listen to this on some nice headphones or well balanced stereo system. I had the opportunity to sit down and listen to the entire CD in one sitting my first time hearing it and it was well worth it. I had some Shure E5C ear monitors that exploded with sound. To say the least, I was blown away. One minor downside is that at times the lyrics can get hidden behind the beats as if they are muffled or dwarfed by the complexity and intensity of the beats. I imagine that this is even more pronounced with low quality speakers or headphones. Overall, you will not be disappointed with this CD because it is fresh, diverse, and a major addition to the hip-hop scene. In a world of multiple hip-hop styles Deep Thinkers makes an substantial addition to any CD collection.

Review by: Mark Teppo at [...]
(04.24.05) There is a revolution brewing in the heartland. Out of the flatlands of Kansas come Deep Thinkers with a studio full of world music tricks and heads full of crackling raps and cutting commentary. Necks Move, a fairly clever bit of titular wordplay, is filled with sparse arrangements -- tiny shards of flamenco guitar, waves of vibraphone, shivering hiccups of vinyl scratching, echoes of mid-century be-bop jazz and loose instrumental funk. Brother of Moses handles the majority of the vocal duties, his sly delivery darting in and out of the instrumentation like an elusive fish while Lenny D handles the eclectic mix of noises, cuts, slices, manipulations and errant instrumentation.

"Sideshow," ostensibly a vinyl duel between Lenny D and Beatbroker, veers away from its quaking deck duel into a variegated realm of hop-head jazz and stuttering vocal commentary. "Rock the Beat" asks the eternal question -- "What is hip-hop?" -- and sets out to answer with a vitriolic lyric and a head-nodding thunder-beat with a round-bellied tone melody lighting the way through the dark. "Move On" slips in like we've stumbled upon a secret studio session, the music swirling around the room in an uncoalesced state, and it's the entrance of guest MC Approach that sets everything into its funky groove. A jazz pianist sets the stage on fire beneath the MCs on "Stand Strong," riding hard against the stop-start motion of the drum kit. "Kiss the Sky" melds sweeping strings with a severely damaged loop of Spanish flamenco, heavy vinyl interference and a percussion section channeling Morrocan street musicians through tin cans. "Search and Destroy" winds up the record with a tight drum 'n' bass rhythm, a furious storm of beats underneath measured rasta delivery.

For the most part, the light and funky approach to the music gives Deep Thinkers much of their depth but occasionally the front and the back of the song don't match. "Here We Are," for example, never quite comes together and Brother of Moses' intoned chorus falls flatter and flatter with each iteration and the otherwise delightful "Interruption with Substance" is scarred with the same laconic chorus delivery. The missteps are few, though, incidental burps in an otherwise smooth record. Deep Thinkers reach out from the middle of nowhere with a hip-hop sound that is global and historical in its sweep. Necks Move is an ambitious record that reaches far and pulls the world close.

Deep Thinkers comprise of Lenny D (the turntablist), and Bro' of Moses. this duo has been tearin' it up since their first album came out (more info at www.Daturarecords.com).Lenny D's conceptual perception of music is out of this world. He, like Kanye West, has developed a signature in his tracks and you just have to get the album, neck move to feel it.But this is the least of his virtuoso-like abilities since unlike Kanye (mostly soul influenced), Lenny incorporates the great jazz masters'--that have influenced him from an early age--into his works. And since we always need the cream on the cake, Brother of Moses delivers, and takes the listener to incredible lyrical highs.I could go on but i've better things to do.....so all i have to say is "GET IT!"

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Awesome Awesome.......2005-03-16

This is the best cd I have heard in years. I love hiphop music. I can't lie though I was getting tired (both of mainstream and indie) and then this group came along. If you love Zion I, Hiero, Quannum style you will LOVE this one. I don't want to blab too much. Just get it, you can thank me later.

5 out of 5 stars The Next Move.......2005-03-10

The Deep Thinkers are a power duo from the gritty streets of Kansas City, Mo. and have delivered a breathe of fresh air. From their community activism to there policital awareness the Deep's leave NO stone unturned. But don't think for one second that this some internet nerd rap. This is hip-hop music in it's purest form, raw and revolutionary. From beatmarker/DJ supreme Lenny D's lush jazzy production (with that oh so important KNOCK!!!!!!!) to the sorely unrated lyrical wit of The Brother of Moses ( Think Abstract Rude meets Dead Prez) the Deep's always prove there worth. Remember that feeling you had when you first heard Blackstar or Freestyle Fellowship? Well prepare for the second coming. Who knew Kansas had this kind of ish poppin'? All I can say is buy this record!!!!!!!!!!
