Flats and Sharps.......2007-05-18

I enjoy the Swingle Singers very much but sadly, in this album they are flat on about half of the tracks. When they are on key, they are very, very good. When they are flat they are awful. Recommendation: buy a different Swingle Singers CD.

A Swingle Singers Half Treasure -.......2007-03-10

If you love Bach and are a fan of the Swingle Singers, buy this CD. Fans of the Swingle Singers enjoy them for what they do to music - release it with air and bounce - and their style is perfectly suited for Bach. I couldn't enjoy it more. But the second Cd in this set is their treatment of Mozart, and, for me, it's inconsistent. This is due to the different styles of the two composers and I just think they match up better with Bach. But at this price, I shouldn't be complaining. The first CD alone is worth twice as much. Snatch it up!

Best Swingles Ever.......2006-02-16

If you know the Swingle Singers, you may expect jazzed-up Bach with a rhythm section. Now, don't get me wrong, i like that stuff, too, but that is just clean fun, while this is just Bach. No percussion, no jazzy rythym, just straight unaccompanied Bach. AND IT IS WONDERFUL.
Precise rhythm, clear vocal lines, everything you expect from the Swingles without the jazz. This is a really great album that should be bought by all Swingle lovers and all Bach lovers.
P.S. i bought this cd when it first came out,so I have never even heard the Mozart. With all due deference to fans of the worthy Wolfgang, i have always found the artful Amadeus rather a bore, so I will remain silent about that part of the album. No matter. The Bach alone is worth twice the price, so enjoy. And, hey, the Mozart is a nice bonus.

Experience pleasant and enjoyable a capella realizations of Bach preludes, fugues, chorale and instrumental numbers. The Swingle Singers render some as vocal transcriptions of Bach's original, instrumental music, and others as jazz arrangements. Their hymn-like rendition of Ein Feiste Burg (A Mighty Fortress) bounces into a light and jazzy scatting of "Organ Fugue from Fantasia and Fugue." They perform 21 excerpts from Bach, none of which are too obtrusive for background music, yet all are excellent enough to listen to while doing nothing but enjoying the music.

Bach was a technical genius, and the Swingle Singers have the talent and creativity to bring his music alive, translating it into new idioms successfully. Worth every chord of five stars.

Swingle again.......2001-06-03

In the late 60's the Swingle Singers used to be a new advent. An inovative exercise on J.S.Bach. Now, revisited, there's a great pleasure to rear again the famous Badinerie and many other inspiring tunes like the Air on G string and the rarelly recorded Luther "Ein Feste Burg". The singers are much "Swingle" and the late harmonies comes alive. The arrangements are quite fresh although a bit diferent on the bass. At the end we find oursefs "swinging and marking". A recording to be listened on and on.

An original and charming interpretation of Bach.......1999-07-31

The Swingle Singers have been around for a while, but I think they are just hitting their stride with this release. They do an incredible job of interpreting Bach, and not just the pieces written for voice! This is a fresh, charming and, sometimes amusing, interpretation of Bach's work. I particularly enjoyed "Air on a G string" and "Little Organ Fugue."

If only she had been blessed with hit-producers, undoubtedly Betty Johnson would have remained on the charts for years, instead of the nine records that made BILLBOARD'S Top 100 between 1956 and 1959.

An absolutely perfect pitch and refreshing sound of purity. Every would-be singer should study these vocals.

This Voume 2 contains a great many "standards" and it is wonderful listening. What a talent!

Betty's Hits - Vol. 2.......2007-01-14

I have been looking for a cd that contains Betty's hits for a long time.
Amazon was the first site that was able to deliver the disc. Very happy with it.

Even more disappointing..........2002-10-05

Volume one of Betty Johnson's Hits was a considerable disappointment on many fronts. One would have hoped that some of the shortcomings of that piece would have been corrected here in the subsequent "hits" package. No such luck. And to label this a "hits" package is just plain misleading. No additional hits here at all with the exception of the inclusion of "Dream", a track that was listed but not included on the volume one CD. Again, sound quality is mediocre and obviously not taken from high-generation tapes. Unfortunately, for those seeking the music of this artist, there are no other options currently available. Johnson's contribution was a notable element of the music of the 50s and deserves much better treatment than that given here.

Good Introduction to two British Invasion favorites.......2003-01-15

Although this CD doesn't go very deep into the catalogs of either of these two British Invasion favorites, it is a nice starting point, particularly if you are not familiar with either of these bands, or if you are rediscovering the great music of the British Invasion and don't want to shell out a lot of money. What you get is five of the better known hits from each band.

Gerry & the Pacemakers had an early musical history not unlike the Beatles and were managed and produced by the same two men that worked with the Beatles, Brian Epstein and George Martin, respectively. The Pacemakers, like the Beatles, were from Liverpool and played in Hamburg, Germany in their early years, sometimes working with the Beatles. It should come as no surprise then, that the Pacemakers material is stronger than that of Freddie & the Dreamers who were considered to be a semi-musical/semi-comedy act (one listen to "Do the Freddie" and it will be easy to visualize the zaniness of this group).

It is interesting to note that both groups recorded songs written by Mitch Murray, an underrated pop songwriter who wrote a number of tunes recorded by several British Invasion bands during the mid-1960s. In this compilation, you can hear his "How Do You Do It?" and "I Like It" recorded by Gerry & the Pacemakers and "You Were Made For Me" and "I'm Telling You Now" (co-written with Freddie Garrity) by Freddie & the Dreamers.
