Just what is meant by "cultural piracy"? The term gets thrown around when Paul Simon makes an album of African-derived music, or David Byrne tries his hand at Latin rhythms. More recently the imperialist charge has been levelled at the practice of appropriating nonwestern traditional music into western club beats, a genre known variously as trance, world dance, ethno-techno, or global ambient, and represented by the globetrotting grab-bag sounds of groups like Trans-Global Underground, Banco de Gaia, and the leaders of the stew school, London's Loop Guru.

In their hands, techno and nonwestern styles are natural bedfellows. Both unfold along a fluid, linear path that put them at odds with western pop's verse-chorus infatuation. And sociologically speaking, the ecstatic release of the dancefloor has tons in common with the spiritual exorcism in mystic folk from Bali, Java, India, Iran, or Morocco--just some of the places represented on Loop Guru's second album, Amrita. In fact, the only impediment to ethno-techno's beautiful marriage is how well producers turn the music's cultural dislocation into postmodern enlightenment. Loop Guru, meticulous studio crafters and enthusiastic live performers, fare well in the middle passage. They do it not as looters, nor as teachers (Amrita's samples and appropriations are never credited), but with the simple (and best) justification--it sounds good. --Roni Sarig

5 out of 5 stars super sounds.......2000-03-06

i haven't heard any of Loop Guru's other stuff but this blew me away. it's an excellent cd if your looking for soothing, exotic and fresh sounds. it was made in 96' but it's very "now". timeless would be a better description. the more i listen to it, the better it gets - i notice something new with each listen. wonderful, beautiful cd, a must buy.

5 out of 5 stars great,great,great!.......1999-07-22

Even though most people who know and like Loop Guru prefer their album Dunjia, I think in the long run and after listening to both albums for years now Amrita offers more versatility. It might be less danceable and instantly accessible than Dunjia and it seems more translucent and fragmented but you never get tired of it because the melodies dont wear out but actually make more and more sense. Phenomenal album. It can happen that you hear a song somewhere and you're like :"wow who's that band? Sounds familiar. I hope I have it." and when you find out its Loop you are actually relieved to know them already and havent let a great band like that slip by.

5 out of 5 stars A brilliant, flawless album........1999-02-24

A lot of electronic/cross-cultural music that I have listened to is catchy and simple enough that it has motivated me to try my hand at it. This album, however, is so good that I realize there is a level I will never achieve. I have owned it for a year now and never get tired of a single track. The best tracks are "Diwana," "Often Again," and "Epic Song."

3 out of 5 stars AmbientGroove & Trancy.......1998-07-17

The album taken together is put together after the name: in a loop format in the vein of higher quality ambient world (sort of). What is the highlight though is track #3 Diwana. Awesome song full of spiritual vigor and essence. Close your eyes and experience the great dragon.

i have 10 three 6 mafia cd's and chapter 2: world domination is one of the best cds that i own if not the best. There is a bunch of badass songs on this cd like number 20 (anyone out there) number 19 ( n 2 deep) number 3 (will blast) number 6 (prophet posse) number 8 ( i ain't cha friend) and so on. chapter 2: world domination is an insane record so if you like three 6 or rap music in general, buy this cd. personaly, i think this is there second best record (the end flat out takes the cake) ever made. i'm 20 years old and i've been a loyal and dedicated three 6 mafia fan for about a good 5 years and this cd is unbelievable. three 6 mafia straight up get down on this cd like no other, and all this is coming from an average white kid (and m not a wigger) thats listens to everything. three 6 mafia are my favorite group/artists/producers to ever make music. i think three 6 is better than 2 pac and biggie and everyone else, because their music is so original and creative. so i recommend that anyone who appreciates music then you should buy this cd

5 out of 5 stars Kristeen where did you go?.......2006-05-27

This is the only CD I have ever seen by Miss Young although I have heard there are others. I want them if they are out there because this one totally took me by surprise and I have yet to hear anyone else like her. I've heard the words Goth and Industrial associated with her (Goth I can kind of see) but the bottom line is that she writes really good songs and presents them with an intensity that grabs you immediately. I check out Amazon every once in a while to see if any of her other CDs (if they are in fact out there) have become available. In an age of musical fluff and flash Miss Young was true to her muse and created something truly original.

5 out of 5 stars You'll be very impressed & truly blown away by her.......2001-09-13

I 1st caught Ms. Young back in 93, when she fronted Waterworks (find their CD too, self titled) at Mississippi Nights in the STL area. WOW. was I blown away, and have been ever since. She is a true original, you'll either get her or you won't. Not only is this a cd that's all over the place musically, it's also consistantly great. Stand out traxs are "Sweetest Freedom", "PE 9.14" and the wailing in "Marley's Ghost", which are amazing. Go and see Ms. Young live if she comes to your town, be prepared for a unique treat. Words cannot express how her and her voice can command a stage, & she'll NEVER bore you. ALL of her cd's are gems, find them and devour em.
I'll drop almost anything to go and catch her live. And I will give her this, it doesn't matter how many people are in the venue, she plays like it's packed and gives 110% (like at the old Cicero's when NOBODY was there). That's a trait I've always admired in her for not many artists will do that.
She is one artist that I have force-fed to numerous people with no regrets.
Go KY! Hope u return to STL soon.

5 out of 5 stars Killing Joke meets Kate Bush with no guitar..........2000-05-04

That's about the closest I can come to defining Kristeen Young's album. Loud, agressive music, but there's no guitar, which kind of breaks the image of rock and gothic that we have. Nonetheless, Young is far and away talented enough to pull it off.

Really, this one is a must for any ecstacy or gothic fan, Young is peak of either genre.

5 out of 5 stars BJORK MEETS NINE INCH NAILS.......2000-03-27

3 out of 5 stars Better for total fans, not so good if you just want to see what they are like.......2006-03-18

The best of SCM's albums by far is This Timeless Turning. A Return to the Inner Experience and Exit at the Axis are also amazing pieces, which will impress people who've never even heard of SCM.

This album, on the other hand, is something that appeals more to people who really want to own all of SCM's albums. I picked it up mostly for the remixes, and found it was great for showing me the best tracks off of all their albums (except Seeds), remixed and with a few unreleased tracks, too.

It doesn't really inspire you, the way the three albums I mentioned above do. What's more, the liner notes are just awful. I really cringed when I read about the band's "ongoing battle against the MAN", their "strenous struggles to overcome many obstacles", and their self described status as "revolutionary-literary-music and art workers". Eep. I loved going to their shows when I was in my early 20's, and I still like their music. But these self-descriptions come off not only as anachronistic, but also as self-absorbed and not very original. I almost felt embarrassed by the fact that I like their stuff.

I remember them when they were playing venues like Western Washington University's student center, in a room so small you could walk from one end to the other in a few minutes, or the University of Puget Sound's auditorium, much bigger, but still not exactly a stadium. This album is the product of a band that started out indie and great, and then went over to Warner Bros. I wonder if that's what turned them into this. It's kind of sad, you know. But it does make me like their older stuff all the better.

    5 out of 5 stars Trippy B-sides album.......2005-05-08

Unbelivable. What a great mix of space rock/prog/industrial psychadellia.

    Standout tracks:
"Goodbye Horse" is so spaced out, beautiful piano, yet completely insane.

"Where does it end.... and Where does it begin" is a freaked out jam session with crazy echoing sound effects.

"2000 Light Years From Home" a rolling stone cover.

"Corner Man" their strongest track, simply amazing.

"Movement of Water" another fav, alternate instramental intro to A return to inner experience

"Every Iceburg is afire" more industrial/techno than the album version.

"Wots...uh the Deal?" Pink Floyd cover, well done.

"To the one you love" Mesmorizing

3 out of 5 stars Sky Cries Mary-'Fresh Fruits For The Revolution'(World Rev.).......2005-01-28

'Fresh Fruits...' is the only Sky Cries Mary release I think I've ever had. They're a Seattle based six-piece that plays neo-psychedelia.The disc is not exactly a mind blower, but it's okay. The cuts I liked best are "Movement Of Water","Moonbathing" and their two covers, the Stone's "2000 Light Years From Home" and Pink Floyd's "Wot's...Uh The Deal".Line-up:Roderick & Anisa Romero-vocals,Michael Cozzi-guitar,Juano Davison-bass,Ben Ireland-drums and Jill Wangsgard-keyboard.Might appeal to some fans of Kula Shaker,Lenny Kravitz,Gwen Mars and possibly Blur.

4 out of 5 stars 3 or 3.5 stars, rounded up because I like them.......2000-08-04

I have long been a fan of Sky Cries Mary and I welcomed this to my collection. I enjoyed particularly the cover of Pink Floyd's 'Wot's Uh The Deal?' from 'Obscured By Clouds', although their own work is definitely very good as well. If you aren't familiar with Sky Cries Mary, I don't think this is a good place to start with them, although Anisa Romero (and the whole band!) is incredible and I certainly recommend giving this cd a listen.

This colorful Seattle seven-piece tones down the wild psychedelia of 1993's A Return to the Inner Experience in favor of a more contemporary strain of art rock. Gordon Raphael's battery of synths leads the way, singer Anisa Romero ranges from folky ("These Old Bones") to ferocious ("Deep Sunless Sea"), and the band can crank it ("Scapegoat," "Stretched") when the mood hits. --Jeff Bateman

    What else can I say?

If you are into bands like Porcupine tree, and Pink Floyd you don't want to miss out on this band.

For any mood, "This Timeless Turning" travels from trippy, to mellow, to screaming loud, and then back again. The dreamy instramentals at the end of this cd are a fantastic touch.

They are back together, and are working on a live album and a new studio album. See what they are up to now at skycriesmary.com

    5 out of 5 stars Perfect CD.......2005-01-14

This is just a beautiful, perfect, intense musical experience. Haunting, mysterious, glorious music. I wish I had seen SCM live, but I seem to stumble upon bands after they have disbanded now that I'm an old man of 56. My sons turned me on to SCM, bless them! Buy this cd!

    5 out of 5 stars Underrated.......2004-12-15

SCM is an underrated band that deserved a lot more attention than they ever got. Anisa Romero has possibly the best voice in the business - haunting, ethereal, and with a range that puts Whitney "Crack Is Whack" Houston to shame.

The music is free flowing, and there is no particular style that gets more attention than any other. They do what they feel, and they have the musicianship to pull it off. Lyrically, they are intelligent and fascinating whether they are singing about global warming, space aliens, or twisted love.

I ordered this album a long time ago through one of those rip-off music clubs, having never heard of this Seattle based band before. I didn't listen to it for a few months until I just got a wild hair up my bum to hear something new. I was hooked ever since.

Originality is the key here. This is why they never got much airplay, and this is why they have a "cult" following. They are too good for mainstream radio that feeds us nothing but more of the same. They are too talented to be appreciated by those looking for one genre or another and are unwilling to expand their horizons. From moody and soft to hard driving and loud, this band covers it all, and they do it better than most artists out there.

4 out of 5 stars This band has been gone way too long!!.......2004-10-07

Ever since I heard them in concert back in 1996, SCM and in particular This Timeless Turning has been on my all-time listened to album list. It's music for every mood, from Shipwrecked to These Old Bones, from Slow Down Time to Deep Sunless Seas. An example of original 90's Seattle music back before everything became commercialized, this is a must for any music lover who turns on the radio and then turns it off because they're tired of the same old un-original crap year after year.

5 out of 5 stars Back from the dead.......2004-07-22

This album and "Moonbathing" are the two best SCM albums by far. I had the opportunity to see them in Bellingham and they blew the place up. We were all in a stupor and could not get enough!! After all these years they are back together. Check out their webpage at www.skycriesmary.com A few CDs will be reissued and it looks like their first show is in Seattle. I wish I could be there !!

I picked this cd up after a brief listen over the tracks. Upon listening, I was very glad to find that the music twisted together the rythm and solid breakbeats of jazz with the off color synthetic taste of modern electronics. Jazzy without sounding live, with electronic elements without sounding like a computer soundscape. The album grooves. I am self admittedly biased towards an albums beats, but this CD does not fail to satisfy. And along with the solid and interesting beats, there are some nice funky leads, and warm synth pads with scratching, odd vocal samples, twips, blings, beeps, rumbling basslines and twittering snares. It's a nice amalgamation of electronic mindset and 'live' instrumentation.

5 out of 5 stars Best damned acid jazz around.......1999-08-25

I have heard countless pitiful excuses for acid jazz of people stealing drum and horn tracks and throwing them together, but nothing has been like Pimp Daddy Nash. Nash doesent slack off with his music, he gets multiple loops of horns, base drums/symbols and vocal tracks that always keep the music jamming.

5 out of 5 stars Clean, Contemporary mix of Jazz, Tech, Modern.......1999-02-26

In the Acid-Jazz genre this CD plays clean and modern. Not space-music, or techno, or over-sampled, but clean modern Acid-Jazz that moves. Definately one of the best in this style range

    5 out of 5 stars MOst excellent.......1998-12-08

Pimp daddy nash combines many of the a priori elements of the trip-hop culture which are lacking in today's popular artists. I thuroughly enjoyed his psychadellic baloon to the moon, where music was played and people were talking in the background....it was MOST PRECARIOUS, yet subtle in an acid sort of way. I recommend this cd to all of you who enjoy the british nightlife with a twist of jazz known as the acid.

    5 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended!.......2004-07-19

I felt compelled to write a review after finding some incorrect information in another Amazon review. This is not a remix album!! There is one remix on here, Too Late, Too Early, a remix of Feeler's Too Early, Too Late, which also happens to be my favourite track on the album. This was released as a "teaser" for their full length album Feeler. Both releases are very original and innovative. You get a very organic feel in what is, save some guitars in places and of course beautiful vocals, electronic music.dancy in palces, and etheral and ambient in others. Very well balanced If you want a better taste of their music, check out http://minumum.ca . This is the label the former members of Perfume Tree are on. They have changed ranks and reformed as Veloce. The site offers streaming radio of much of their music. Check it out! and also, Veloce's website: http://veloce.ca. cheers!

5 out of 5 stars Moody, Hypnotic, electronic yet not fake sounding........1999-10-12

I love this CD to Death. It has great rythm that keeps the music moving. It is hypnotic and the female vocals can really carry you away. Most songs have a dance club like feel to them which makes them quite danceable, yet they are very moody and hypnotic as well, which make them great to just listen to while driving or as background music. Most songs have an electronic sound to them as well as a raw sound. It is a great combination; similar to what Sky Cries Mary does. It has synthesized elements but they are well chosen and fit very well with the more raw sounding analog sounds.

3 out of 5 stars A Taste of Things to Come.......1999-07-11

If you enjoy their 'Feeler' cd, you will likely enjoy these songs and their re-mixes very much. It is not like their previous release very much. One thing for certain: there is alot of music to listen to here....well over 55 minutes at an ep price. Some of the songs clock in at over 10 minutes and get a little worn, but it is ok since it is a song and remix collection. Well worth the money........check it out.

    5 out of 5 stars Zeitgeist.......2006-04-19

SCM at their nascient best. All four tracks are excellent, but two are absolutley outstanding. Cornerman and Elephant Song are more than well worth the money by themselves. The other two are also strong tracks. Kick back and listen to the spirit of a much more innocent time not that long ago as it happened in a rain drenched paradise called Seattle.

5 out of 5 stars A Band is Born Again.......2002-07-03

What an incredible ep to start the second phase of your career. This album was the mark of a major turning point in sound and writing from the band's previous output. Most bands are lucky to get 1 shot at the big time these guys got 2 and got away with it.
Exit at the Axis starts off with a definite mood setter; a mood that is maintained throughout the whole album. I believe this album was designed to place you on a cloud high above the world and give you space in your mind to isolate how you feel and what you think. The music and soft vocals are soothing and melodic. There is never a point on this album were the sound becomes irritating and shakes you from your previous mood.
The songs are very structured, they draw you in so you feel as though you are with the singer experiencing what they are feeling and seeing. This is a polished work of art, its not rushed or pieced together with leftover material.Every song flows into the next like a river into the ocean.
This is an excellent album to listen to if you are alone and want to relax. Or if you are reading or working on some hobby and you want music in the background that wont distract you. I have even used this album when I have a date over or a couple of friends for a evening. By the way I always get a couple of comments about how nice the music is.

    3 out of 5 stars Storytelling SCM-style.......2000-06-14

Exit At the Axis calms the synthesizers and comes forward with a beat-oriented set that focuses on simple melodies and strong lyrics. The smooth, mellow style of EAtA is most like This Timeless Turning without the cathartic howls, but produces its own moments of clarity nonetheless.

"Moon Dream Meadow Allegory" softly intros the EP, leading into "Back to the Sea," the most melodical and predictable of the four. Though closer to standard rock than SCM generally puts out, "Back's" driving core rhythm, layered with light and heavy musical elements--harps, percussion, harmonies, more--makes for a great piece. "Cornerman" is heavy beats and advice-for-life lyrics remeniscent of "Deep Sunless Sea" from This Timeless Turning, but lacks the depth and intensity. So why do you buy the EP? "Elephant Song." If Roderic's crooning presentation of a transcendental legend of creation doesn't have you swaying in your seat, the ever-intensifying drums, guitar and synth will. Anisa even throws in some wordless wailing for true fans, rounding out the long piece and making it a must have for those who hit the repeat button on the last two tracks of This Timeless Turning.

If This Timeless Turning is your cup of Sky Cries Mary tea, EAtA is good to have to get to know the band's softer side. Mechanically and emotionally, though, it doesn't measure up to its big brother.

2 out of 5 stars you have got to be kidding...........2005-05-25

dullsville...if you want the dope scratching and sick tracks, get a RAW cd, or some old hype....this guy is seriously over-rated...and as far as his claims at being the first to combine hip-hop and jungle, please...

    2 out of 5 stars maybe you'd like it.... i don't.......2004-03-01

Freaky flow is very "popish." He plays "anthems" or "anthem type" tracks that's about it. His scratching is ok nothing special, especially when set beside other djs known for it. All in all take it for what it is a mediocre local dj trying to go world wide.

4 out of 5 stars How does he do it!.......2002-06-12

Freakyflow's INSANE scratching ability on this album more than makes up for the minor beatmatching flaws and the not so exceptional track selection. He definetly outperforms and has more skill than dieselboy, dara, and ak1200 COMBINED!!! NO ONE BEATS HIS TURNTABLISM SKILLS!

4 out of 5 stars Freaky is da bomb, hands down.......2002-04-12

Yo, I know my Jungle, and Freaky has skillz that are above average. His mixing skills are definately reputable, but it is his scratching that is just plain sick. Try and find me a junglist with skillz like these...right, I didn't think so...Odi is the only other person who comes close, and Craze is a little better. Anyways, his tracks are ILL! He's got the Nelly Furtado remix of Party...its like 50 times better than the original. Also, A-sides "Wake Up" and "Dreaming" tracks are slammin, not to mention my favorite "Killa (remix)". Pick it up, because I definately put it in my top 10 mixes I own...the last bonus track is so hilarious too...just get this album if you're a junglist.

3 out of 5 stars hmmmm, i dunno bout this one..........2001-12-09

ok, freaky flow is one of the best when it comes to the skills of spinnin, especially his crazy melody scratchin(or whatever its called), but this cd really bored me. don't get me wrong, this is a good cd. there just weren't any great parts to it. no "climax" to the cd...you know, theose parts of the cd when yer drivin down the road, and the dj starts mixin in the next track, and you just want to pull over, jump outta yer car and start dancin'? well, this cd just didn't do it for me. i bought danny the wildchild's cd the same time i bought this one, and i would say that i listen to danny's cd about 95% of the time, in comparison to freaky flows,,,ehhh, if you already have danny's cd, then i guess you should buy this one.
