Not to harp on anyone here, but it's obvious that none of you grew up in a church or environment that had a good choir. I know, a Hymn is a genre of music, but a recording of a hymn isn't one if it doesn't contain HARMONY. If they're a "choir," then why don't the tenors sing a different note than the sopranos, altos, and basses? The organist is quite good, I'll admit, but you're wasting your time if you're looking for a good recording of these beautiful songs that were COMPOSED with harmony, not unison. If they want to sing in unison like this, they need to be stripped of their "choir" status and simply be called a "group."

Most everything on this CD is very well done. The recording environment might have been less than perfect, but that shouldn't dimish one's enjoyment very much. Most of the arrangements are very traditional, with the notable exception of Amazing Grace, which though it isn't terrible, it isn't very good either. Some songs had verses removed, which is understandable, though it was poorly done in Eternal Father, Strong to Save -- they did verse 1 ("Eternal Father"), then they skipped(!!!) verse 2 ("O Christ, the Lord") and went on to the final verses ("Holy Spirit" and "O Trinity") -- which is skipping Someone important! However, outside of that, it was excellent.

If you like sacred music, or hymns, then you'll thoroughly enjoy this CD. If you're a Christian, you should enjoy this as well, no matter your taste in music (and you might just learn to like hymns as well!). It is a well-chosen set of some of the most magnificent, God-honoring music of all time, done is a mostly very traditional manner, and it was done well.

The huge size and reverberating acoustics of Washington National Cathedral make it difficult to hear any kind of live choral performance clearly, even if you're sitting in the front rows in the nave. The Cathedral Choral Society is handicapped by having to record in this acoustically mushy space, and it shows in this CD, often creating an uneven balance between the organ and the chorus as noted by other reviewers. The repertoire is well-chosen, but the quality of the arrangements is uneven. Too often, the chorus seems to be singing in unison right out of the Hymnal, like any parish church choir at an ordinary Sunday service. Certain pieces do suggest the heights which the Society is capable of attaining. But the group never achieves the splendor that the Cathedral Choir of Men and Boys displays every Sunday morning. Just when the Society seems to be getting there, the conductor pulls them back. And the shrill folk arrangement of "Amazing Grace" will have you covering your ears as the sopranos shriek clumsily, confusing volume with fervor.

I purchased this CD just based on the titles and am very glad I did. There are only two downsides to the album. First is the fact that there isn't a companion CD with 26 more hymns! Second is picky, but I do agree with another rater that the organ could have been a little louder related to the singing. Hope you enjoy listening!

On Eagles Wings is most definatly inspired.... Latin Music is great if you understand itm but I have not heard any conversations in Latin lately. The most important aspect of liturgy is the participation of the assembly and if the assembly (or most of it) does not understand what is being sung or said What's the use? Catholic Tradition is great kept alive on CD for those who want to walk down memory lane but it is a Vatican 2 church......deal with it or get out and join one of those rougue churches that say mass in Latin and stop trying to move backwards. There is nothing more powerful than a singing actively participating church.......let's not stiffle the voice of the Body of Christ.

Hello, this music is good but it is not haunting,mysterious,Otherworldly,or timeless like Gregorian Chant or The Latin Mass now all I can say is that we as catholics threw out 1400 years of beautiful music for junk like "On Eagles Wings".Though To the person who said they prefer this to the pre-vatican 2 dirge music you are very close-minded and devoid of art and beauty and judging by what you said you are part of what I call the weak generation of Catholics who are only catholic on paper and have no sense of history for your very beautiful and mysterious church. Most people from that generation see the catholic church only after vatican 2 and you forget about the past councils and teachings of the Catholic church and it's history,I mean there is a reason they kept it so long it was for it's goodness(if it was bad it would not lasted 1400 years) as a priest on EWTN said to those who say "That is so pre-vatican 2" "So was Jesus." You see Latin Is very Beautiful and Mysterious language and it is a very catholic thing I mean whats more catholic then Gregorian Chant or the Latin Mass it's timeless like the church itself we as catholics need to start reclaiming are heritage from the likes of liberal priest and bishops of the 60's generation regardless of what they say there do as you please Mass is not in the spirit of Vatican II which allowed the use of vernacular in the Mass but it did not intend for Latin and Gregororian Chant to disappear it said to preserve it and give it, it's proper place that is what has been the intention of every pope since including this one they have all encouraged the use of Latin and Gregorian Chant in the mass.
How can anyone one not like it,it's very beautiful and it's been around for 1400 years how can one say that singer songwriter stuff which no one will remember in 50 years be better then this it's like seeing heaven and saying you prefer the world(alot of people unfortunatly do this.) Though to ansewer the question of it being to sad yes it is very somber and mournful but thats because the sacrifice of mass is a very solemn ceromony it was never meant to be celebrated in rock or jazz or polka or any other abuses by certain clergy. If alot of these ignorant catholics only knew what took place at the mass they would understand. You know you should be proud of the fact you are catholic because we have many gifts the protestants don't have(In the sacrements,the liturgy,the art and the music.) So I say to you now even you prefer the vernacular have respect and appreciation of what came before you in are Holy Catholic Church. Oh by the way I am 19 about to be 20 and Vatican II was a good thing it retouched are faith as Cardinal Francis Aziz said. Though I believe many people misinterpret it.
I suggest watching EWTN alot or really studying your faith and I like both Novus Ordo And Tridentine Rite.
More of a rant not a review but these songs have there moments and there are many Vernacular songs I like.

It sounds like you are in Church, and that is what I was looking for. I especially like the Ye Watchers and Ye Holy Ones, Peace is flowing like a river, and Let There Be Peace on Earth.

Some of the other songs were better done by other artists. Like Shepherd Me is done better by the original Marty Haugen. This version is good, but not as good as Marty's. And I was not particularly fond of this version of Amazing Grace.

Overall I would recommend you buy a copy for your collection. The songs which are good, are very good.

This CD was not at all what I expected. It sounds just like you are in Church. Every song is accompanied by an organ and most of them sung in soprano. The tempo of all the songs is very slow too! I was looking for something I could sing along to, not put me to sleep! On the positive side, there are some beautiful songs, I just wish they were sung more "up beat".

I grew up with the music of the St. Louis Jesuits and this CD is a good representation of the BEST. In the spirit of Be Not Afraid, I am Near You, on Eagles Wings are all songs I loved in high school, college, and adult life. We sing most of these songs regularly at Mass. These are pleasant renditions of inspirational songs that uplift - in my opinion they are far better than much of the dirge music pre-vatican II.

        It was a miracle I even glanced at this CD; I'd never heard of Royal Hunt and the cover didn't exactly scream "metal". I heard a sample and was BLOWN AWAY!!! These guys are AWESOME, combining the best elements of UFO, Scorpions, Dream Theatre and Stratovarious! This is the first heavy metal band where you want to hear the KEYBOARDS more than the GUITARS, but they're all GREAT. The only slight flaw I found was the band's lyrics were slightly downbeat & criticized God (Snap out of it, pal, God's already done more than enough for ALL of us). Besides that, these guys RULE!!! Well worth the money.

        I havent listened to royal hunt in a long time, but i was looking on Amazon.com and i came across this,I noticed that John West was doing lead vocals and already knowing of his brilliant voice with Artension I decided to give this a go. I have played this around 4 times since getting it 2 days ago and i realy like it. The music is heavy progressive and very classical and the vocals are great. Get this CD its great value and runs for close to 70 minutes long .

        I became a Royal Hunt Fan after Listening to The Mission, but i must tell you, Watchers is in my opinion the most electrifing and most perfect CD out there today. The vocals of John West put him at the top of the Metal ladder as far as metal vocalists go. His voice is so clear and so powerful it grabs you and doesnt let go. In my opinion there is none better than John West his addition to Royal Hunt was a stoke of genius..... The keyboard work of Andre Anderson is unmatched by any keyboardist in the progressive metal world today. Then there is the guitar work, or should i say masterery, of Jacob Kiaer his work and technique puts him above all guitar players today it is so crisp so precise and hell he is fast. The bass lines of Steen Mogensen remind you alot of Geddy Lee, but with a fuller richer sound. Ladies and gentleman if you havent purchased this CD well, what is keeping you BUY IT NOW. Also if you havent had a chance to catch Royal Hunt in person, you are in for the experience of a lifetime. I caught them in Seoul Korea, and they were how do you say it EXCELLENT, POWERFUL, UNREAL, and left you wanting more and more. ROYAL HUNT RULES. Buy any Royal Hunt CD you can that John West appears on and you wont be dissappointed i guarantee. I look forward to any new release form them and seeing them again in person.

        The Watchers is for the most part a collection of old Royal Hunt material either re-recorded or recorded live with their great new singer John West. The CD does contain a great new 13+ minute song Intermission. This is a good collection for fans of the band. I'm always interested in hearing older material after a new singer joins a band. DC Cooper left some pretty big shoes to fill, but West has done a terrific job. He has his own unique style that I think suits the band very well, and is a great complement to Andre Andersen. If you're already a Royal Hunt fan, I would definitely recommend picking this up. If you're new to RH, this would be a decent starting point, but I'd recommend picking up Moving Target or the Mission first.

        Definitely one of the most overlooked records of the year...a skronk soul funk weirderiffic masterpiece, think a herky-jerkier "!!!" or more dissonant Radio 4 or Rapture, or the Talking Heads if they were on Troubleman. It's got endless grooves, moog freakouts, even some nice string parts. Check the last song: it's a monster.
