4 out of 5 stars Pike's Re-Emergence.......2007-02-07

After Sleep tripped into legal and personal problems, the band ceased to exist, and Matt Pike slumped into a period of depression and no musical output. For whatever reason Pike decided to give the music world another shot, and hooked up with a few like-minded fellows to create High on Fire. This is their debut outing into Sabbath-worshipping, monumentally heavy stoner metal. It should be noted that this album continued Pike's plague of legal problems as it was originally released on the now defunct Man's Ruin label, but was thankfully re-released by Tee Pee with new art and some new cover material, including a lovely Celtic Frost number.

As one might expect from Pike, the guitar tone is very loud, fuzzy and completely engulfs the mix. This really isn't a bad thing as his playing is quite superb and the riffs here are top-notch. Riffs such as the blissfully simple lead to "Baghdad", the monumental power of the main theme to "10,000 Years" and the brooding intro to "Fireface". High on Fire also show their ability to craft riffs into good and compatible songs, with most songs showcasing discernable structure (something some of Sleep's more wandering songs lacked), and melody sections combining with straightforward riff jams. All of this makes a great metal album, and one that carries the Sleep and Sabbath style into a more modern and heavy sound. An excellent debut and highly recommended for fans of the genre, and anyone who loves a bit of old fashioned amp worship.

5 out of 5 stars Classic Metal.......2005-06-25

This album is classic, ear shattering, speaker blowing metal. This is one the the best albums every recorded.

4 out of 5 stars Here, Try A Hit of Pure Metal.......2004-03-09

Imagine watching a huge, roaring title wave rolling in from the ocean and come crashing down right at your feet. Listening to High On Fire is a lot like that.
They are basically a little faster version of Matt Pike's old band, Sleep. Take Black Sabbath and a little Motorhead and then add about 500 lbs. of weight on the guitar and you'll get an idea of what they sound like.
On "The Art of Self-Defense", the first three tracks are the strongest, which draw you in and never let you out. The momentum is established by guitars never let up. The heavy, driving riffs lift you up and carry you away. Listening to them may make you feel dazed and confused.
The vocals, guitar, bass, and drums all fit together making the overall sound united. All the musicians seem to be on the same wavelength.
High On Fire is the progression of pure metal without any influence from the New Wave of British Heavy Metal of the late `70's and early `80's ( except for the singers voice that sounds like Lemmy of Motorhead ). It's nice to hear a purified form of metal in a time when it's been watered down and fused with every form of music known to man.

5 out of 5 stars Heavy and Hard will rule the world.......2004-01-07

High on Fire are credited with ressurecting the sound of Sabbath, but I find that they bring back the sound of too often overlooked bands like early COC, the Accused, Black Flag, early Melvins, etc but much slower and more precise. It's the awesome raw power of the afformentioned bands combined with a sludge death hammer that will kill "stoner" and "doom" bands and send all of them home to read their copies of MAD magazine at their mother's house. Fans of old HARDcore, not the comedy stuff that gets pushed today will freak over High on Fire. Anybody will freak over this stuff, it's just awesome.

It's not all that uncommon for the artists, writers, and musicians of a community to band together for a worthy local cause. But when the community is the fabled '90s rock mecca of Seattle, a local benefit is bound to assume national interest. Such is the case with Home Alive: The Art of Self Defense, a double-CD of music and spoken word poetry whose proceeds go to Home Alive, a Seattle-area non-profit organization dedicated to providing self-defense training and resources to combat violence. Home Alive's primary inspiration is Mia Zapata, singer of the Seattle band the Gits who was raped and murdered in 1993. Memories of Zapata run throughout Home Alive: Her music (with the Gits and solo), her former bandmates (as Evil Stig and Dancing French Liberals of '48), and her tragedy (violence and abuse). Brutal words from Lydia Lunch ("Why We Murder"), Natalie Jacobson ("Got What Was Coming"), and Bobby Miller ("Keep You Mouth Off My Sisters") make it clear Home Alive's response is not one of antiviolence but rather counterviolence--and that often requires fighting back forcefully.

With a few honorable exceptions (Jello Biafra, Jim Carroll, Joan Jett), Home Alive draws its talent pool entirely from the Seattle music scene, including the big guys (Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Heart), the mid-sized (7 Year Bitch, Presidents of the U.S.A., Fastbacks, Supersuckers), and the little ones (Los Hornets, North American Bison, Catfood, Christdriver). The range of emotions and responses presented sends a tremendous message of solidarity to victims everywhere. And given all the grunge hype thrown Seattle's way, it's both disarming and touching to find that true substance and community actually exist there. --Roni Sarig

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding.......2003-01-14

Outstanding bands, outstanding spoken word. Hard to believe after all this time it looks like the murderer was caught. On Jan 10, 2003 through DNA evidence someone was arrested.

5 out of 5 stars Damned fine!.......2002-12-17

Good bands...good music...good speaking...Lydia Lunch. What's not to like?

4 out of 5 stars Hmmm..........2002-06-20

Quoting a previous review: "It is an absolute waste of money to buy this CD" - yea, you get a sampling of the best of Seattle's mainstream and underground musical/spoken-word acts, and worst of all...the proceeds go to the Home Alive fund which works to promote safety through self-defense and find the rapist and murderer of Gits frontwoman Mia Zapata. What a waste indeed. A good cause, some good bands. The music is interupted for spoken word interludes by the likes of Jello Biafra and Exene Cervenka. Hardly stand-up comedy, but probably confusing to some mainstream rock kid just looking for rare Nirvana or Pearl Jam.

1 out of 5 stars Very Disapointing!.......1998-08-14

This CD has all good names on it. However, besides the Nirvana's and Pearl Jam's and Soundgarden's and whatnot, this CD is horrible. It is filled with foolish talk and stand up comic routines. It is a 2 CD set and you have to search for the good stuff. It is NOT worth the money to buy this CD for the "good stuff"...The Album is screwed up. Go buy a real album like Incesticide (Nirvana) or Superunknown (Soundgarden). It is an absolute waste of money to buy this CD. If you could get it for $3.00 it may be worth it, but, stay clear of this toxic crap!!

5 out of 5 stars Wall of Thunder.......2002-07-20

Towering wall of heavy distorted riffs from another time and space. Vocals are low volume, but they drift wonderfully over the noise, serving to make the guitar and bass sound that much louder. A rare band that actually jams in the studio, the songs on average are long. Mid tempo on the speed, not a whole lot of lead guitar. Somwhere back there the drummer is lashing the drums and cymbals mercilessly. You don't listen to this music - you experience it. And all this talk about "stoner rock" is silly at best, calling this stoner rock is just another stupid lable. This is spacy, jam oriented heavy rock that is not in a hurry. So that makes it "stoner rock?" Ok, I'll just say it is fantastic. There is no label for this, it kicks your ass, and takes you away at the same time. But it is not a brutal, metal type sound, it's a bit cut back from that. Just listen. Let it take you away.

4 out of 5 stars HIGH on fire.......2001-10-30

Matt Pike is a shamanistic traveller tied to the spokes of the cosmick wheel. Sparks fly out of his eyes and his fingers function as disembodied emissaries from beyond time or thought. If you want to hear what I mean - listen to this cd. From the strange, medieval graphics bathed in fire and mystic light to the lyrics recounting ancient rites and prophesying mythological destinies, one senses immediately that this group of men has tapped into, in fact, is possessed by, a power not of this Earth, a power emanating from the immortal nexus of humanity and divinity. This power speaks most eloquently and devestatingly in the music itself. The mind-bending baroqueness of the serpentine riffage and the trance inducing repetition of the grooves, steeped in distortion's chaotic density, weave a thick fabric in whose patterns one discerns the face of God. Of course, mortals cannot always endure such encounters with the force which rules and conditions the universe, the force of ultimate truth. Seen from this perspective, I believe that the title, "The Art of Self Defense," refers to the techniques that a soul must master in order to protect itself from disintegration when exposed to absolute reality's uncompromising blast.

5 out of 5 stars Onslaught of Riffage.......2001-10-03

I picture the Klingons loving this music if they are into metal.

5 out of 5 stars sonic anthems from the king of stoned himself.......2001-06-29

nobody pays any attention to what this band is all about...gettin STONED! hence, the name, the inspiration, the very fuel that propels this band to the stratosphere. 'weed priest stoned arrival' is all you can hear before the analog vacuum tube amps are turned up to 10 and there is blood congealing about your earlobes. there are only 2 ways to listen to this album: STONED and LOUD.

4 out of 5 stars Matt Pike strikes again!.......2001-04-12

If you don't know already, High on Fire is fronted by Matt Pike of the legendary doom outfit Sleep. And while I enjoyed sleep, I never enjoyed it as much as this stuff.

This stuff has groove - really awesome groove. You'll be nodding your head in no time. You get plenty of low, heavy riffs, with wonderfully dirty production. Production's one of the best things about the album - it's dirty as hell, but it never sounds like it was recorded in your mom's closet with a hand held tape recorder. It gives the album a great raw feeling, and helps add to the power of the music. But it's not all search and destroy....these guys take time out to let the music breathe. Spacing out and soloing are a big part of the music.

Don't be turned off by the fact that there are only 6 tracks - this is a 43 minute lp. So if you like the crushing riffs of bands like Electric Wizard, Sleep and Kyuss, and enjoy a record that doesn't sound like someone spent 5 million dollars making it sound better than it really is - this is for you. What you hear is what you get. No pretentiousness, no nonsense, head crushing doom! 8.5 out of 10.
