Another great trip down the MFU memory lane.......2005-10-19
Volume 2 (comprised of 2 CDs) is another first rate compilation of the series' original music and not to be missed by U.N.C.L.E. fans. The liner notes are wonderful and add a lot to ones appreciation of the music.
My only problem is that THE CDs ARE COPY PROTECTED! Considerable work is needed to get the music onto your iPod, if you really want the music in your mp3 collection. This is a major hassle and a surprise, since the first set in the series was not copy protected.
The best of the three Double CDs ORIGINAL soundtrack release.......2005-07-12
Many of us have always thought The Man From UNCLE had the best music for a TV series ever, and this three double CD release confirms this. Wow! I'd be just happy with one CD, but having SIX (three double CDs packages) is absolutely out of this world, I mean, a lifetime wait come true.
Indeed, this is an unbelievable collection of three double CDs packages with the complete series soundtrack, and I mean the complete music, not a tune is missing.
And this is the ORIGINAL Man From Uncle music. Let me stress the point: this is the four years ORIGINAL soundtrack with the original recordings as they were heard throughout the series, not a no-name orchestra doing personal versions of the stuff. The audio transfer is very, very good, the music from late episodes is even in stereo.
Each individual CD carries over 70 minutes of music. All in all there you have the four TV seasons main titles and all, absolutely all of TMFU unforgetable music.
This is not a chronological release, meaning, all CDs have a mix of music from all four TV seasons. Volume 1 is heavier on early TV seasons stuff, fans of Jerry Goldsmith will love it. Those of us who prefer what Gerald Fried and later Richard Shores did with TMFU music, then volume 2 is mandatory. If you are a fan, you can't miss any of these six CDs. However if buying all three double packages is too much for you, you must go with Volume 2, no questions asked. Volume three is the weakest of them as it brings "suites" and a whole CD with "The Girl From Uncle" soundtrack, but you have a bonus "Open Channel D" beeper.
Each package is gorgeous, each with a glossy color booklet with extensive liner notes with details on how each tune was written to a specific TV series episode and how it was used onwards. You have bios on the composers, on how the recordings were made, even an overview on how many instruments were available in each of the years the music was recorded.
So, throw away your Hugo Montenegro Man From Uncle CD, this is the REAL thing.

In 1976, Steve Forbert came to New York from Jimmie Rodgers's hometown of Meridian, Mississippi, with a harmonica, an acoustic guitar and a guitar case of terrific songs. His debut album, "Alive on Arrival," was released in '78, and Forbert has been trying to live up to its tremendous promise ever since. He finally fulfilled his talent with Mission of the Crossroad Palms," the best album of his career. His first recording in three years (and only his third in 13), it preserves the breezy charm of his early work while stripping it of all its callow glibness. Instead of puffing up the importance of his subject matter, Forbert is more likely to deflate it. Forbert, once tagged "the new Dylan," now more closely resembles John Prine in these bouncy country folk tunes and in such down-to-earth aphorisms as "It Is What It Is (And That's All)."
Forbert works best in folk rock arrangements which sketch out the harmonies and rhythms with a minimalism which matches his wispy voice. E Street Band alumnus Garry Tallent--who also produced Forbert's second-best album, 1988's "Streets of This Town"--gives the singer just the lean support he needs. But mostly the album works because it harvests Forbert's best-ever crop of songs: the ironic reflections of a retired railroad worker, "It Sure Was Better Back Then"; a hooky shuffle about relighting an old flame, "Lay Down Your Weary Tune Again"; and the Gothic imagery of the apology ballad, "Oh, To Be Back with You." --Geoffrey Himes

Uplifting.......2007-02-16
Steve Forbert, always an estimable talent, is fully realized on this disc. I've always loved his view on life, and each album was peppered with little gems, thoughtful tales and well-crafted folk rock. This one, however, is not just flavored with tasty nuggets -- it is jam packed. Every cut is a joy -- the rockers, the wistful ballad, the dreamy whispers, the pleasure and the pain. I wish that I could better articulate why this album is so affirming, and why it makes me feel good every time I hear it. Forbert strikes me as someone who has come to grips with himself, his relationships, his failures, his hopes, his world. And he articulates it with beautiful poetry and understated musicality.
I have hundreds and hundreds of CDs, this is one of my favorites.
number 1 Forbert's album.......2006-04-25
I have few albums of Steve Forbert but to surpass this one I think is very hard. It's good from the first song to the last one and every time I listen to it my spine shivered. He is certainly the most underrated singer-song-writer in the United States, what a pity!!!!
Magnum Opus.......2002-06-07
This 1995 set of songs is a full and mature effort by the estimable Steve Forbert. The raw voice intertwines with lovely, delicate music on some songs-- exotic Spanish-style guitar on the softly moving "The Last Rays of Sunlight"-- and a more raucous arrangements on others. And the lyrics! There's a lot of optimism, but also some forays into loss and regret... "It Is What It Is and That's All" is a standout for music and words: "...you'll look backwards an' long for/ the things/ That you'll find it's then too late to do"; but while he can bring you up short with such a masterful turn of phrase, Forbert will always offer perspective and solace, as exemplified by this song's title. The only downturn for me is "Don't Talk to Me"-- too raunchy, seems misplaced here.
better than ryan adams.......2002-02-17
steve forbert is so much better than the aforementioned. yet, he is relatively unknown. this album is one of his strongest, I'll agree, though all of his stuff is so good...please buy and enjoy this record and tell all your friends how much better he is than ryan adams.
IT'S GOOD TO FEEL GOOD AGAIN!.......2001-03-15
This is one of my favorite records by Forbert. Having bought this one after his great album "The American In Me", I was expecting more of that same rock and roll feel. But this is a quieter record. After giving it a couple listens though, the songs just reached out and grabbed me. The album opens with it's rockinest tune, "It Was Better Back Then". But from there things calm down with one of Forbert's best and most introspective songs "It Is What It Is". With lyrics like "pondering the future you worry, listen somehow you'll get through, then you'll look backwards and long for the things that you'll find it's too late to do. Being a middle aged person, I can relate. But Forbert picks me right up with "So Good To Feel Good Again", where he sings about getting away from his troubles, freeing himself of that ball and chain, and just hitting the highway where he can get back on track again. This is my favorite on here, and like the rest of Crossroad Palms, it's great music to listen to while cruisin in the car on a lazy Sunday afternoon. This is a memorable Steve Forbert album, with some great sing along songs, and it comes highly recommended.

Texas is a long way from France.......2005-12-03
Before I go any further, allow me to confess that I'm from Texas ... born and raised. This CD of Calvin's is good but not extraordinary. For those who lament the injustice of his greater fame across the pond, I can only say "come on down to Austin" where MANY more musicians will blow you away with their talents on any given night. I'm not trying to dis' Calvin's music; it's raw and genuine. But the truth of the matter is, there may be a reason he chose to seek his fame in Europe. As for the claim of Mr Russell being the best of the Texas trubadors, I need only to point to Steve Fromholtz to discount this assertion. The CD is a good sampling of a Texas roadhouse warrior, the kind of act that would fit perfectly at the Starlight in Terlingua. Buy this CD, but don't stop there. This is just the tip of the iceburg for real Texas talent!
ONE OF THE BEST "AMERICANA CDS OF 2000.......2001-12-12
Everybody that loves the music of Townes Van Zandt and Texas music lovers in general should buy this record, unfortunatelly only released in Europe. This is "Americana" in its best, a mix of blues, country, folk and rock, that explodes in a couple of great songs. The fact that Calvin Russell is better known in France and Germany then in Texas, is a tremendous injustice. Calvin is probably one of the best Texas troubadours alive. Buy this record!!! It's a must have to all "americana" fans.

Product Description
The missing link between SPOCK'S BEARD and DREAM THEATER ? The first named discovered by the second ? The common tour of the year 2000 ? Neal MORSE accompanied by Mike PORTNOY ? Yes, but what if there's something more surprising ? APPLE PIE tries to mix the qualities of two of the most important current American Progressive rock bands, in an album aptly titled "Crossroad" (2007). And as the gamble wasn't huge enough, this brand new group comes from... Russia !!! Did someone remember Cold War ?... Vartan MIKHITARIAN seems to be almost as gifted as the multi-talented Neal MORSE: a very good voice (Excellent English accent indeed !), incredible skills with almost all instruments (Guitars especially) that happen to be in his hands, a great stylistic range and an imaginative way of composing. And his colleagues are quite in the same level. Here we are, with an incredible first album, jointly published by the Musea and Mals labels, polished with a sound and production a good American band would have been proud of. And if some people think this is a mere clone, they just have to skip the first tracks, the more under influence, to discover the real personality of the slavic trio. APPLE PIE reveals itself as good as playing funk-soul music with reeds than performing sophisticated pop songs, Progressive rock of heavy-metal. Without forgetting a slight emersonnian touch given by the keyboards parts of bass player Aleksey BILDIN, also known as a saxophonist in LITTLE TRAGEDIES. Got it ? In the end, you'll get a real must-have. What if the buzz comes from the East ?

If the blues has a truly mythic figure, one whose story hangs over the music the way a Charlie Parker does over jazz or a Hank Williams does over country, it's Robert Johnson, certainly the most celebrated figure in the history of the blues. Crossroad Blues includes the song's 'Sweet Home Chicago', 'Drunken Hearted Man and many more. Pazzazz. 2006.
