Customer Reviews:
Almost worth 5 stars.......2005-10-25
It would be useless to repeat what the excellent reviewers before me have posted about what is contained in this disc--there are some excellent explanations and histories to read below this, so I will simply build on them and defend what some say are weaknesses.
No music is appropriate for all times--so it is advisable to put this on when you are feeling meditative or spiritual, or even in a sombre or nostalgic mood. The first few times I played this disc, four years ago, the last tune--Tears of the Angels--was grating with all of the high violin trills (and I'm a violinist), putting it on recently the piece moved me to the point of tearing up myself. The second piece, My Gaze is Ever Upon You, is hardly repetitive, just divided into 16 "gazes" each with their own character. It was good enough to inspire me to buy the music and try it out myself with my own CD recorder (fun and challenging). The first piece, "....Depart in Peace" is perhaps the most blatantly repetitive, but it is subtly more devastating in its beauty. With each reiteration of the patterns, they are extended in length and breadth of sound--deeper bass, more involved texture and harmony, more intense dynamic range. If you are not paying attention and only listening casually, you will only hear repetition.
I am still listening to this disc regularly and still being emotionally moved after four years. Highly recommended.
First Tavener Experience: Enjoyable.......2001-07-12
I first heard "Depart in Peace" in my car after having tuned in about 1/4 of the way through. I listened through to the end so that I could hear the title of the work and names of composer and artists. I knew I must purchase the CD. While I agree with some of the more critical comments of the other reviewers, I still think that these works can provide hours of enjoyable listening to those who appreciate introspective, contemplative music. The three pieces accomplish the composer's goals as stated in the liner notes, although "Depart in Peace" remains my favorite. The warm voice of Patricia Rozario and the sometimes plaintive, yet sparkling violin of Clio Gould are a perfect fit for the piece. In short, my first Tavener experience was enjoyable, and the CD is certainly worthy of a listen.
Interesting musical synthesis.......2001-03-20
Most folks familiar with Tavener's music, won't be familiar at all with the various Eastern traditions he draws from. The text for "Depart in Peace" comes from the "Song of Simeon." St. Simeon is an elderly first century saint that held Jesus in his arms and prayed to God, "Now lettest Thy servant depart in peace" since he had seen God incarnate. The piece draws on Orthodox Liturgical music and perhaps most interstingly (for a piece with a Christian theme) it draws heavily on various music forms from India (although there are permanent Christian settlements in India dating from the 1st century.) It uses the tamboura (tanpura) that is the drone instrument used in North Indian classical music (hindustani music), it also uses a vocal technique that is quite similar to qawwali, a style of Muslim Indian (and typically thought of as Pakistani) form of Muslim devotional music, which is quite estatic in nature and usually carries sufi themes. Similar to qawwali, which only repeats a single line or two throughout a piece, Patricia Rozario (a soprano born in Bombay) chants "Alleluia" over and over again. Rozario is surely familiar with qawwali and is probably more qualified to sing it that any other opera/western music singer (which is what she performs regularly) Despite this interesting synthesis, the piece only somewhat works. Tavener certainly understands these other musical forms well, and has done a pretty good job merging them, but the piece is a bit long. It satisfies niether the qawwali aspect nor the western aspect, and you kind of feel like you are "left hanging" in both respects. Qawwali explodes with ecstatic intensity, and near Eastern Orthodox music has a more subdued even-tempered, but equal mystical intensity, and in some ways, the sharp contrast of the two next to one another really cancel each other out. All that being said, it is still pretty interesting, and can be quite moving sometimes, but it isn't a piece that consistently satisfies, you kind of have to be in the mood for it.
"My Gaze Is Ever Upon You" and "Tears of the Angels" share the same problem, they are a bit too long, and a tad repetitive...especially "My Gaze Is Ever Upon You," which is for solo violin and tape.
If you want to check Tavener's music out for the first time buy "The Protecting Veil," or "Akathist of Thanksgiving," you'll be MUCH happier.
Extremely haunting, but not without its problems.......2000-05-13
On this disc, Linn present us with three works commissioned by the the BT Scottish Ensemble and their director Clio Gould. The former is an elite string group; the latter is an elite violinist. In their hands, Tavener's incomparable writing for strings (which he treats in the same way as he treats choirs) sounds both haunting and powerful, although the fragility of the music as captured in the recent recordings by the Academy of Ancient Music is not as prominent as it should be.
In any case, each of the three works is a fine example of Tavener's style. "Depart in Peace" is one of a number of works written in memory of his father, and is more specifically a setting of the "Nunc Dimittis" in Greek for soprano, Indian tampura and strings. Of course, whenever Tavener writes for soprano solo he intends it to be sung by Patricia Rozario, and sure enough she performs it here, providing the quality of tone and inflection that marks her out as his strongest vocal interpreter. The work is planned out using four contrasting blocks of material: the "alleluias" that rise radiantly out of ascending string figures; the words of the canticle, softly intoned by the soprano and echoed by a violinist whilst the tampura and strings provide a drone; the second group of "alleluias" cast as an extremely quiet chorale in a low register; and finally the joyful - almost brazen - "alleluias" that get faster and faster just like Hebrew music. Whilst all these building blocks make for some rewarding listening, the problem is that Tavener draws out their exposition and repeats them over and over- so unless you're in a meditative mood, this piece will bore you stiff.
Something similar might be said of "Tears of the Angels," written in memory of the Balkan victims, although this work is more engrossing than "Depart in Peace." An extremely haunting passage of chords is heard in various octaves, which gives way to the main melody, played by a solo violin at incredibly high pitch and decorated by constant trills over the rest of the ensemble. Whilst this is a beautiful depiction of the tears (and may well move you to tears), in the end it begins to pall on the ear. You may want to listen to it with the volume fairly low...
"My Gaze is Ever Upon You" is perhaps the most intriguing and engrossing work on the disc. Clio Gould gets a chance to shine here, playing a duet with herself (thanks to the medium of tape) and even singing to her own accompaniment at the very end. This piece has the most variety and stands out as one of Tavener's finest, most moving instrumental works.
All in all, this is a worthwhile disc if you like John Tavener, but I wouldn't recommend it to those unfamiliar with him. Also, it is a bit of a pity that it comes in at only 58 minutes running time- though that is made up for by the superior quality of the recording (which, as the booklet tells you, will sound even more pristine if you own a Linn CD player). Mostly good.
Typical Tavener.......2000-05-01
I am a Tavener fan, but this music, while good, does not rate 5 star. The first work on the CD is the best, as it has a soprano voice, sung with violin and tambura, and uses Indian modes. It's a great piece, but it's too long (at 25 minutes), and it endlessly repeats itself, so it becomes somewhat boring. The other two works on the CD are also a bit long and repetitious.

Customer Reviews:
from Solo Piano Publications.......2003-10-05
"Adagio" is a collaboration of pianist George Skaroulis and composer Chris Spheeris. Skaroulis arranged sixteen of Spheeris' classic pieces for solo piano, giving them a personal and elegant interpretation of his own. I have several of Spheeris' early albums, but for some reason, haven't kept up with his work. Hearing these pieces again has renewed my interest, and has also sparked my enthusiasm for Skaroulis the interpreter as well as the composer and pianist. Most of the tracks are on the quiet side, making this an introspective and relaxing album - wonderful for reading and/or unwinding. Favorite tracks include "Elektra," "Andalu," "Juliette," and "Field of Tears." "Adagio" is an outstanding album, and I highly recommend it to those who enjoy reflective solo piano.
ADAGIO.......2002-04-18
If you are looking for some original music similiar to Culture, forget this one.Doesnot even fit the new age type of music.
Simply Great!!.......2002-02-15
This collaberation cd from Chris Spheeris and George Skaroulis is a simple reminder of how wonderful and melodic instrumental music can be. I purchased this cd not knowing much about Chris' work, but having been a Skaroulis fan for the past couple of years, I knew that the music would be top notch. Once again George proved me right. His interpretations of Chris' work is absolutely wonderful and you'll be treated with soft and soul-warming melodies. Sit back, relax, and allow the wonderful language of music heal you and bring that inner peace that we all yearn so much for.
